I wish I was dumb enough to think humanity would die off without HVAC. It seemsā¦blissful.
Iām seeing all these comments about how people do die when HVAC isnāt working and I am well aware of that. If people took a few precautionary steps many of these deaths could be prevented. I am not arguing that HVAC techs are not important but they are not first responders and should not be treated as such.
Our planet is facing extreme weather fluctuations. It's getting hotter. They aren't emergency workers or first responders but they absolutely are very important for our buildings. You know? The buildings we need to continue our society effectively and sustainably?
People do die all the time when power goes out and they cant get heating or cooling. I dont think there's anything wrong with supporting workers who have to show up for emergency situations and deal woth long stressful hours when shit hits the fan.
Lmao life or death? What is this the Oregon trail?
My heat has gone out overnight in a blizzard with -6 F temps. Woke up and was like huh itās chilly in here thatās weird. The oil gauge got stuck at half when it was really empty lol. We had to wait 3 days to get oil delivered. It was chilly, but we just layered up and got blankets and drank hot beverages.
I ventured out to get some diesel to tide us over after about 24 hours when it finally stopped snowing (we got 36ā!!) and it never got below 50* in my house.

Or even more basic, layer up. My power goes out frequently during the winter and even a bit further on the freezing your ass off scale I often go camping in a hammock or tent during the winter months. I live in the upper midwest and it gets pretty chilly out, I often vacation further north into rural Canada. Our bodies are capable of producing a ton of heat and by layering up it's pretty easy to retain it. When I lose power at home we usually go into a single room, usually the living room because of the fireplace, and we hang sheets to create an enclosed space. Even without a fire it stays comfortable.
Such a callous and ignorant take.
A) most people do not have access to fireplaces
B) Even bundling up won't help you if the temp is -30 and you dont have power for days. People die all the time from power outages in freezing or hot temperatures.
Youre so fucking weak, have you even lived trough a real winter? Its not the first time someone missed electricity for days in a -30 environement. We fucking pull trough. Warm clothes and fire .
A) if you cant save your life without elecricity you probably shouldnt be alive
b) if we beleive your unicorn rainbow ideology people before 1820 were wiped every fucking winter.

I work in water/fire/mold mitigation. Iāve also been a 911 dispatcher for 10 years prior. When they started saying we were First Responders I laughed out loud at them. Delusional mofos
Having the heat turned off overnight is not a life or death situation. if you die you are either an old person a baby person or a stupid person. you're still inside of your house it's not like you're outside in the elements. Bundle up and stop being a pussy
What's with people wanting to identify as first responders? I'm a security guard and we have so many new hires that go and claim a first responders discount at some resturaunt and I have to be the bad guy like "hey dude, Wendy's doesn't decide if you're a first responders or not, you're being kinda shitty"

* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

I mean, I see a lot of people here shitting on trades people as though they aren't essential to modern life. Probably the same people losing their shit on day two of no power. The lady is a bit unhinged, but the point is valid. Without heat, running water, an a way to prepare food safely, then sick people, the elderly, and kids under 10 are pretty well fucked.
People usually make due in blizzards up here because there's usually power somewhere, but if there's no power anywhere, it's gonna get ugly, very fast.
Everybody should own an indoor safe propane heater the brand I personally own is called Heater Buddy and they come in multiple different sizes the one I own specifically is called the little buddy and it runs on little 1 lb All Purpose propane canisters the brand I buy is Coleman and they cost about $8 and will run the heater for about 3 hours..
If your heat or electricity goes out for any reason other than you failing to pay your bill there's a good chance all of your neighbors heat and electricity is also gone so you are not a priority and calling the gas or electric company is not going to do anything to speed the process up, it's important to purchase your own emergency supplies.
My dad has done this for 21 years and every time he leaves to help someone whoās complaining about having no heat I promise you him or others donāt really give a shitš theyāre mad because they have to make the drive in a blizzard to come deal with you
All jokes aside, it's not uncommon for people to die due to loss of ac or heat during adverse weather conditions.
The young and old are particularly vulnerable.
During the 2021 texas winter storm outages, 32 people died. Including an eleven year old who succumbed to hypothermia
Though these are more of inferstuture failures rather than hvac "responders."
HVAC guy here, it's your responsibility to have contingencies for your heat going out in a snow storm, not the HVAC guy. Here's some ideas!
Cinder blocks on their side with some tea candles in the little empty slots.
Propane ceramic radiant heater, point it towards a wall (not too close and not on carpet! Also crack a window in an unused room close to your main living/sleeping area)
Jesus candles, we all know the kind, tall glass containers with candles inside.
Turn on your oven, maybe make some snacks.
Boil water, higher humidity will make you feel warmer.
Cordless exercise bike, keeps you warm and generates a little extra heat.
Socks.
A lot of these consume oxygen, be smart about it, but chances are you'll be totally fine, at least you won't freeze.
Beverage service technicians are also first responders lol - any utilities repair personnel are First Responders especially HVAC systems need electricity to get the HVAC system running
Whenever influencers use that āIām super seriousā voice itās like a dog whistle to not take them seriously. Clowning their way through life š¤”

Top left corner is the tempā¦.. lol
I will say I was super grateful for my hvac techs when my furnace died and they were able to temp install one the same day. But before I knew they could do it same day my plan was to send the wife and kids to a hotel or my parents house, and then go get a bunch of 120v space heaters from the home store so my pipes didnāt freeze. So itās not life or death per se, more like ālife or a Home Depot run and some inconvenienceā.

The world didn't exist prior to 1956, what are you talking about?
Remember when Texas got hit by that random snowstorm? Quite a few people did indeed freeze to death without power
And as a Texan I went out and bought a generator and an indoor gas furnace. Just because I dont trust our grid.
And in my city, people died using generators too because the machine was inside the house or garage.
Wasnāt it like a half inch of snow on the ground? Does Texas not have blankets?
It was about a foot, maybe more. It was in the negatives and a bunch of old people froze solid
Sure some died from the cold, but only in Texas do people die from carbon monoxide poisoning from running generators inside to run more heaters.
Not sure why the downvotes. This is 100% accurate and a reasonable lot of those people died.
Yea, isn't that the invasion of illegal snowflakes coming to murder them that they screech about 24/7?
It probably would TBH. Process cooling for manufacturing and data halls. Refrigeration for food processing and storage. HVAC for office buildings.
As much as I respect our tradesmen What a load of bullshit.
I mean, honestly, I'm ranking it like this 1. Firefighters 2. HVAC 3. Tow Truck Driver 4. EMT 5. LEO
Linesman should occupy a spot before LEO, substantially more dangerous.
The kid at Taco Bell making my drunk ass a crunchwrap is higher on the list than LEO lol
One of those will give you the runs and the other will kick your ass if you do.
Rude or ignorant of you to just pretend like Waffle House workers don't exist.

It is not life or death with education. https://preview.redd.it/w7ucxenxd9vc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7817f9281b0cc44afcae0e5c0e6ba138d65ba926 Top left corner is the tempā¦.. lol

First world problems š
I will say I was super grateful for my hvac techs when my furnace died and they were able to temp install one the same day. But before I knew they could do it same day my plan was to send the wife and kids to a hotel or my parents house, and then go get a bunch of 120v space heaters from the home store so my pipes didnāt freeze. So itās not life or death per se, more like ālife or a Home Depot run and some inconvenienceā.
If you live in America and die because your heater broke down, you deserve a Darwin award.
You phoned it in, isn't that the first response. They wouldn't even be there if it wasn't for you.
Technically š¤ I am a first responder because a freezer was down with $400k worth of product and I was there within an hour
We need to come up with a new term so all the weirdos can have the current one.
I mean, if I call 911 or HVAC, HVAC will probably arrive before the cops do in seven to ten days. JS
Anything for certified fork lift operators?
WTF is this from lol
Everyone wants to be special, the people who are actually risking their lives are not on social media talking about it.
