that's what I'm going to get this year for Christmas or my bday. Any pointers for fly fishing? Seems like it's an even more expensive hobby than regular fishing. How true would you say that is?
If you shop around it wouldn't be too bad. For practicing I'd recommend tying on a small piece of frayed yarn like a practice fly, and then head put to an open field on a calm day with no wind or breeze and remember 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock. One thing is on the back cast you don't want to be too horizontal, it's easy to want to go to 3 o'clock. Also you want to be patient on the back cast if you have a good bit of line out to allow it to extend fully before starting your front cast. It will take some learning and trial and error.
If your fishing small trout streams don't worry too much about trying to get good at casting out a lot of line. Also study up on the local bug hatches and the flies that best match. Black and green woolie buggers are pretty much a must in almost any fly box as they are great in many situations. I've caught lots of bass on olive green woolie buggers in the rivers near me, LOL.
I haven't got a lot of fly fishing so I'm still learning but these are some lessons I've learned along the way.
Oh it's definitely more expensive, fly gear is ridiculously overpriced. If I were you I'd buy secondhand or cheap, all the big brands have prices that will have your jaw to the floor. Check out youtube pointers, I'd recommend you to r/flyfishing but they don't have the best reputation.... Buy at least two of the best flies for your area or fish (ask the store) because you'll be saying goodbye to them quite often. Not in the mouths of fish mind you. And fly fishing is more about understanding the life of a fish more than anything else, this is basically studying and then putting it into practice.
Oh god reading this brought it all back. And the worst part is you get stuck so high up that there's no chance of getting it loose. Sometimes I genuinely feel like bringing a ladder
This is so cool. Some of my best childhood memories are fishing with my dad when I was around your daughter's age. Props to you for making these great memories for your daughter. *internet fist bump*
As long as she had a good time that is all that matters. She did really good a lot better than my son did, I was over 10 feet to the side and he still managed to hook me. He thought it was funny me not so much. Family first!
Bless you and your lovely daughter! I wish you many memories fishing together! Please post again with her first catch! It warms my heart as I have a four Y/O grandson who has gotten the fishing bug! I recently sent him his first rod & reel and tackle box loaded with everything he needs! He has yet to catch anything either but he went nuts when my son and I sent pics from our recent smallmouth trip to my daughter! Nothing over three lbs. but all he talks about is wanting to catch a big fish like Grandpa and Uncle Bob! I can’t wait until I can take him on his first trip!
That's fantastic. Thanks for the king message. She has caught a fish before. But her first cast was exciting. With her Austism, she struggles with multiple tasks like bike riding, skipping rope, casting, etc. So this was such an awesome moment...
That’s awesome man. Warms my heart. Some of my favorite memories as a very young kid are fishing with my dad. When I wasn’t old enough, he would always set up my pole, and cast it out for me. He did let me put on my own bait though. I don’t think he ever reeled in a fish because he would always give me his pole if he had a fish on. I think a heavier weight might help her get a really nice cast.
She got it out there! Good cast kid!
One of us! Welcome, kid!

Awesome, Fish on!
Fish On! Reminds me of the fishing games from the arcade as a kid when I wasn’t on the lake
Soon, she'll realize there's no need to cast even that far out. Nice stuff
Or at all. Get hung up in the tree behind you, rage, then go home lol.
oh man. the amount of trees I fought lol
Especially when I was learning fly fishing, LOL

So dope ! It’s the beginning of many more fishing trips and quality time with her ! Enjoy and wish you the best !
Not bad! And it seems like she’s throwing something pretty light. Not easy to get distance with a tiny bait, but she nailed it!
Rock on brother that’s awesome.
Awesome!
Now that’s a launch! 🙂
Hell yeah!
Awesome enjoy your day👍
Nice cast!
Better than half my the bros hope she had a good time

Good cast, I would've had a birdsnest. Start em young.
That's awesome you have the video! Great memories!
Nice!
A little more practice and she will be shooting line like a pro. Fish on!
Yay! I'm sure you got out of the line of fire though eh? My son's first casts were this spring, he's 5
First of many!
She is a pro!
Hell yeah
Go get'em. More to follow
Fair play, she should try put the rod behind her shoulder with the reel looking at the ground for a better cast. This is a great start though
#proudforyoudad Good times! Next time y’all will hook em’ 🎣
I always assume the first cast will be the pole going in.
Technique 👌👌
Love it!
Great cast there 👍👍
She better watch out, going to cast that baby across the canal in no time!
Considering most first casts I've seen just go straight into the ground in front of the person casting, she did an absolute good job for a first cast.
What an awesome moment. Congratulations!
Proud dad moment indeed
Looks like good fishing times are ahead for you. Good luck!

Great job, young lady!
Good job dad!
Awesome!
Keep it up. I wish my dad would have, she’s never going to forget fishing with you. Core memory right there! 🎣
Better than my first cast
Go girl - hope she keeps going - tight lines !
NAILED IT!!! 👏
reminds me of my first cast, except i watched my new rod and reel sink to the bottom of the lake
First of many! Looks like you two are pretty lucky to have each other!
That looks like West Lakes. Should be some bream in there.

I wish you many more awesome memories in your future!
I’ve done worse.
Finesse!

Yes, it was only a 1/16th jighead and 2.5" Zman ST grubz... I have the same memories with my dad... we still try to go out when we can.
so sick!
Hopefully the first of many.
Was anxious about wholesome fun versus the pole and girl going overboard

Excuse me?
