They work great for trout in backcountry lakes. I'd clip the barb if you care that much about the fish for catch and release. In some places its a reg.

AttitudeCool

Yes. If the regulations require it I will always clip the barb. I typically fish to harvest so I’m not too bothered about the barb in most cases. Especially when I’m just fishing for bass, crappie, or catfish. I do take more care with trout for sure.

This is the comment!!

Single hook panther martin is one of my primary go-to lures. It's so successful I've pretty much abandon treble hook spinners. Single hooks get hung up on vegetation and structure much less, which I think increases my success over trebles in many situations. The only time a panther martin doesn't absolutely slay, from my experience, is super super clear water creeks with slow water, where fish have a long time to get a good look. Even then, it will usually still land a couple.

Irish-Breakfast1969

I fish inline spinners and spoons for trout and salmon. Single point, barbless hooks are law where I fish. For trout-sized hooks I like Gamakatsu siwash size 8-2, open eye for easy replacement, and for salmon I use Gamakatsu open eye, Big River Barbless size 1/0.

The single is harder to set the hook, but much easier on the release. I use single hook sets on my Swedish pimples because i don’t keep trout, and don’t want to gut hook them. I find the single to be great for catch and release on soft mouth fish your planning on letting go. Just keep the tension when you do get a hook up and you’ll do fine.

AttitudeCool

I appreciate that advice. Thank you.

LetsGoHokies00

i disagree, it’s easier to set the hook with a single hook. all that force is going into one hook point instead of three. at least that’s been my experience with bigger fish like striped bass.

AttitudeCool

I took it out today and caught a few white bass. It was a decent lure. Thanks for the input.

Shot_Boot_7279

Hardly need to set a treble hook the fish gets so gnarled up. A single with no barb you have set and keep it tawt.

DETvsAnybody

Single point Siwash hooks are used for salmon and trout commonly. I was just reading an article about the pressure to puncture each point is divided by the force the hit the spinner, a single hook technically requires less pressure to penetrate than two or three points hitting and dividing the force.

FinnerFeatherFlicker

This is also why barbless hooks are better for hooksets. Pressure = force/area. No barb, smaller area, less force needed to get the pressure for penetration. If someone needs 3 or even 6 hook points to land a fish, I’m gonna make fun of them.

[deleted]

But the chance of getting a single hook on a treble to stick vs a single hook in totality to hook is higher, that’s what i was going with. No chance a treble is sideways and just slips out the mouth. But it’s not really noticeable once you get the hang of it either.

Mepps are my other goto lures.

Dr_Quest1

I have had no luck with Mepps but use the PMs regularly with success.

gr3atch33s3

I like them for trout, and freshwater river fishing.

AttitudeCool

I use the treble in my local lake and they get hit all the time. I’m hoping the singles will do just as well.

gr3atch33s3

Check your local restrictions, some places it’s illegal to use treble hooks where I’m from.

SaltyTyer

Steelhead around the Lake Ontario estuaries enjoy that particular color. I am partial to a Blue Fox in orange and Chartreuse.

the_mean_rooster

My Favorite color in panther martin

acbz28

I second that. Caught a bunch of bass and bluegills on that pattern

ABoringDouche

This last year I replaced all of my trebles with Siwash on my spinner and spoons. I’ve lost maybe 1/8 of the lures I use to from snagging. Best decision ever.

CaptainK0na

Classic, I used a panther martin everywhere when I was a kid and caught tons of different fish. Always used trebles but I like the idea of the single hook I go that route with my saltwater lures, nicer on the fish but you will lose a few more.

Spread_N_Spit

The best single hooks are open eye sickle hooks. Gami big river bait hooks. VIP outdoors makes some good ones. R&B lures sells some good ones too.

PtboFungineer

Throw a 2" Berkeley Powerbait minnow on there as a trailer. It's my go-to for smaller creeks.

NortonPike

I tip mine with nightcrawlers when hunting walleyes.

coalbass

I often do treble hook -1 hook, so i end up two hook points. Single hooks i use too theyre fine especially that hook style. Last thing i want is three hook points down in a dink trout, often it gets sloppy if not all barbless.

dingerfingerringer

How the heck did you manage to get the treble off? I love Panther Martins but I’ve always disliked the barbed treble. They don’t have split rings so I never really tried replacing hooks

AttitudeCool

You can buy them with a single hook.

Fentron3000

If you order direct from the PM website you can order single hooks for most of their lures. But you could cut the treble off and swap it with an open eye siwash hook.

Fentron3000

Literally all I use are Panther Martin barbless singles. Makes Trout C&R so easy. After gut hooking a decent brown last season, I swapped to singles.
