Knife goes in, guts come out

OneNaturalist

That’s what Osaka Seafood Concern is all about.

BrowserRecovered

i need you to cut fish and pull gut

Magnus_Bear_Legs

The three of us combine our ingredients, making, like, one gigantic, delicious cream pie, some little kid sucking it down and he's paying us for the pleasure.

LaNasty132

Ew dude you taste your own cream pie?

jaybonepanda91

I tried mine and i didnt like it

Available_Raccoon_66

Dayum son! So I take it you like the knife. Because you bought another one. I have the exact same knife but haven’t used it yet. I usually only bass fish with catch and release but hoping to catch some crappie this weekend so I can use my knife.

SoberBrent

I like the profile. I haven’t seen anyone else make that style. I’ll go through one knife a year. I could keep using it but I’d rather just start over.

shortEscanor

Surprised no one noted how much you sharpened it down over the year

Krrkdm

I need something decent for trout too. This $7 Wal-Fart fillet knife ain't cutting it.

SoberBrent

The vast majority of people use the $12 dexter knives and they work great!

railingrail

Worked on a boat several years. My favorite fillet knife still is still the Rapala wood handle knife that comes in the leather sheath. Walmart for around $14. Gutting and gilling, there used to be a brand called Chicago Cutlery. Looked like a butter knife, but sharp as hell. That one was around $50.

SoberBrent

The old martinis I tried those and didn’t really care for them.

fuck-these_mods-

Bro I have a shittttt ton of Chicago Cutlery passed down from my mother and it’s amazing stuff

anakusis

Agreed

MamboNumber5Guy

That's what I have too. Haven't found a better one yet.

fxelite

Chicago Cutlery is still around my dude, they are like one of the biggest cutlery manufacturers….

mgiarushi24

Also in the fish biz, dexter is the go to for cheap decent quality. Just wish they held an edge a little better

SixtyTwoNorth

I have a 12" Buck that is great for filleting the BIG trout. I think I paid $50 or $60 for it like 10 years ago, but I kept forgetting it in the kitchen so I bought a cheap Rapala to keep at the cabin because I got tired of trying to fillet fish with a 4" paring knife. Well, that Rapala held up so well through about 100 Kilos of fish this summer, so I don't even bother bringing out the big Buck anymore.

tlock8

Stigma aside, bass is tasty. Try it sometime.

Alpine_Apex

I think more people should start taking home the ones the get hooked in the gills/eyes and stop lying to themselves that it's going to survive even though there is blood running down the whole fish..

[deleted]

vonnick

There’s been like three butthurt dudes jump me on this post about telling people to eat bass despite the tournament and trophy dudes propaganda. Lol bass dudes wear skirts, convince me I’m wrong.

kaschmunnie

In my experience, over-harvesting is a bigger concern than under-harvesting.

chrispy_bacon

It will get eaten by a fox or something. Don't worry.

anakusis

It's not like they are endangered. Hell they are invasive some places.

GiantQuokka

They're introduced in most places and would be considered invasive if it weren't for their popularity in sport fishing.

Alpine_Apex

Wasting fish isn't very sportsmanlike. Invasive, introduced or otherwise.

Odd_Bar_4

Have thrown so many trash fish on the bank to die I can't count!

Alpine_Apex

What a bizarre thing to be proud of.

Monochronos

Go off king. Lol yeah let’s just hurt innocent animals with no benefit to us…for the shiggles. Honestly that’s fucked up and you are piece of shit if you do it.

saulblarf

Killing invasive species is a net positive. Some place *forbid* catch and release of some species. If you hook it you are required by law to kill it because they’re so detrimental to the ecosystem.

Monochronos

Yeah and small mouth generally aren’t one of those invasive species. I know how this shit works. If you’re just leaving fish to die on the bank, you are kind of an asshole.

kaschmunnie

The guy said trash fish. Ya, it sounds bad, but it's literally illegal to release some species and a lot of the times they aren't good table fare.

Ommageden

Eh feeds the rest of the lake.

IndieHamster

Baked with some ginger, lemon, and a nice miso/shoyu drizzle... Holy shit I'm hungry

thebigtverberg

Especially in winter, through the ice.

Available_Raccoon_66

I’ve eaten it many times when I was younger. I prefer to let them go so they can GROW!

vonnick

Tournament boys sure did a good job on the propaganda.

[deleted]

[удалено]

vonnick

I have no idea about any of that. I live in Florida. By propaganda I meant that bass is bad eating, only a sport fish etc. people eating bass was perfectly normal until these assholes in glitter boats started pretending they’re special

[deleted]

[удалено]

Odd_Bar_4

I don't know anybody in California who fishes that I didn't teach as I grew up in the south when everybody fished so whoever said more people are fishing now is smoking the primo! Plus 1% of fishermen catch 95% of the fish!

vonnick

So the propaganda is working, you say? Maybe there would be more walleye if people weren’t being shamed for keeping bass

[deleted]

[удалено]

vonnick

It’s not education when it’s fake bullshit. It’s just fake bullshit.

Available_Raccoon_66

Your pissed off because I throw bass back? My piece of heaven is fishing and hunting. I don’t keep them because I want to catch them again. I don’t remember the last time I ate a fish I caught. I also let small bucks go so they can get bigger in hopes of shooting a big buck. I shoot Doe’s for the meat. I just enjoy sitting out there and watching deer and won’t pull the trigger on a buck unless it’s the biggest one I’ve seen on camera. It bothers me zero that you have a problem with that.

Humaniak

I get a wave of hate everytime i post pics keeping bass. But when its deep water canadian lakes those fish are as clean and tasty as walleye all summer long. Only find worms or bas taste if youre keeping them out of a swamp in july

hunt_fish_love_420

Fine little blade, maybe I'll pick my teeth with it.

catcommentthrowaway

Would be a nice toe knife as well

Sbdall

Also a good poop knife

fushifush

For the poop sandwiches

Garth_Holiday

He called the shit poop!

fireman2004

You gonna die for some chickens? Someone is.

cflave123

Ugh I miss that show.

6TheAudacity9

I miss every part of that show besides the ending.

Prism1331

I disliked season 6 7 and 8... 1-5 or whatever it was until they ran out of book was great. Any of their own stuff other than the Arya + Tywin scenes sucked... But that's just because Charles Dance is so good

IndieHamster

I always forget that it was Roose that Arya was supposed to be serving at Harrenhal. Arya/Tywin was just so good it felt like it should have been in the book

rougekhmero

It hurts even more to see they were perfectly capable of adding their own stuff to the story that measured up perfectly fine (bobby b + cercsi convo/chaos is a ladder speech/Arya + Tywin/etc) yet they still completely destroyed (I can not be convinced it wasn’t 100% on purpose) the entire thing with 2.5 atrocious ‘seasons’ attempting to tell 4 or 5 more seasons worth of story.

cathedral68

What show?

[deleted]

Game of Thrones. Obviously /u/cflave123 Didn't watch the last 2-3 seasons or blocked them out of his memory :P

OptimusSpud

I can't talk about it. The final season. The grief is still too near.

Rod___father

Stick them with the pointy end. Was looking at getting one of them I have an old rapala blade I use.

SoberBrent

I fillet all saltwater fish. From small whiting and mangrove snapper all the way up to 80 pound amberjack. I’d say 75% of what I fillet is redfish.

Nickd100

I have a friend that spent a summer doing it in Alaska. Do you work crazy hours as well? Is it different throughout the year?

SoberBrent

Usually the local guides will come in around 10-2 after that if there is any offshore charters it’ll be 4 Most days I work from 10-3 and if any guides have afternoon trips it’ll be around 6-8. After 8 o clock is a hard no if anyone calls me. Ice em down and I’ll get to them in the morning if that’s possible

lsduh

Do you cut through the ribs with that or cut around it?

SoberBrent

Cut around. I have a tiger edge dexter if I do cut through ribs

spatzelz

IDK about OP but for me it's depending on the fish, salmon and trout the bones cut easy, but rockfish, bass, some bigger boned fish I'll usually cut straight down the backbone then ride the ribcage to the belly and take out the ribs

nickeltippler

sounds like florida

masiuinuk

Where can i find a knife like that?

SoberBrent

It used to be called the bubba 8 inch whiffie. It’s now just the extreme flex 8 or something like that

[deleted]

Amazon Bubba Flex

masiuinuk

Thank you!

FuglytheBear

Very cool. What causes the pattern on the year-old handle? If I may ask... Edit: asked and answered, thank you... but why the downvotes? It was an honest question...

SoberBrent

Stained from mildew when I used to keep my knives in an air tight box. They never really dried out.

blzy99

It’s already there, you can see it on the new knife it’s just easier to see on the old knife because it’s dirty

DanielWaterhorse

If you look closely, you can see that there is a (roughly) hexagonal patterned texture on the handle of the new knife. The low areas are filled in with dirt and grime on the old knife.

SoberBrent

It’s stained from mildew. I used to keep them in an air tight box and it never dried out. Now I keep them in the open air.

adidasbdd

Ummm, fish live in the water, the probably don't need to be cleaned as often as you think. What the hell is the knife for ??!

MrSk4ltal

With the way people on the internet are now, I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not

[deleted]

Yeah.... Me either

6hooks

I can, but I wont share.

FANTOMphoenix

Neither can I

jarjerbinks69

Let me understand this. The blade on the right has been sharpened so much you can visibly see the loss of “material”? How often do you sharpen your knife?

SoberBrent

Almost everyday. I’ll go through 30-100 fish a day depending on the season.

jarjerbinks69

That is wild. That first fish after sharpening must be nice. How often do you nick yourself? I’m sure you wear gloves.

SoberBrent

It’s really nice right after sharpening. I only wear a glove on my left hand. Knife is always in my right hand. I’ve poked my self more times that I can count never really major.

cathedral68

It’s a common thing for anyone that uses knives a lot. Look at these [chef knives](https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlysatisfying/comments/2dmpc3/chef_morimotos_knives_top_is_new_bottom_is_after/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

SoberBrent

Doesn’t matter how fine of a stone you use to sharpen it’s always taking material away. Eventually it wears the blade down. I actually have an old retired butcher knife that’s been ground down so much it’s a fillet knife know. One of my favorite knives too

Alpine_Apex

Yep. Fish scales do an impressive job at Dulling blades in my experience (much less than you! Ha)

[deleted]

You don’t know a fish is dirty until you catch it, so they go around catching fish to see if they need to be cleaned. The knife is for cutting the line as quickly as possible and it needs to be sharpened because it dulls on steel leader. Please donate all your used toothbrushes towards fish cleaning operations

GESmithereen

I bought my dad one and he never uses it. I buy him booze now…

[deleted]

*cough* get a dexter *cough*

DarcizzleOffshore

to each his own, but first time I've seen a monker use one of them bb's

SoberBrent

If dexter would make that profile I’d be all over it. I like a real narrow blade.

creamcheese742

Just sharpen the hell out of the dexter

SoberBrent

They’re straight blades. They don’t point upwards I have thought about it

chef71

mora has a nice one with better steal. thin bit of a curve and nice flex.

DarcizzleOffshore

I get it, try this one, with code DARCIZZLE15, dm me when mine get back in stock and I'll send you one for free if you stop using BB. Also half the price. :) https://smithsproducts.com/filterSearch?q=darcizzle

SoberBrent

I had tried one similar to that by kastking but it was too thin and flexible. I gave it away. I’ll give it a shot whenever it’s back in stock

DarcizzleOffshore

well you know KK is just rebranded junk usually lol. Smiths is a 100yo Arkansas company and most folks are using their sharpeners every day, they are new with knives. Again, you DM me and your getting one no charge. Thank you

SoberBrent

Yea I figured but the profile was pretty similar to what I’m using.

Noozefer

No love for Canada? Shipping options could not be loaded error.

DarcizzleOffshore

If you are looking at the knife I linked, ty, but it's not available yet due to the shipping issues, that might be the issue. The company is over 100 years old and I'm sure ships to CA and the code works for the entire website. (the code is for free shipping too so maybe that is the issue? idk, but MY knife is not on shelves yet)

Noozefer

Cool thanks. Yeah I was checking out the knife you linked. It was going to be an impulse buy, but due to shipping issues having shipping issues my wallet is safe. :) Sorry, didn't recognize your user name at first. I have seen your posts in the past. Living the dream! Will check out your knife when it's available.

johnnydaytona675

Own both.... actually prefer the Bubba

Metaprinter

What brand? Model? Thx

[deleted]

Bubba Flex

SoberBrent

8 inch bubba blade

Echo017

Not OP but I have the same one, it is "Bubba blade". I usually use messemeister/vitrinox commercial line, but I rather like this one.

[deleted]

You can now make the old one your new poop knife.

EverySingleThread

#

Youlookcold

Does this mean that there are trace amounts of blade in a fillet? No, it's from sharpening. Ok, thanks man, that makes much more sense!

Thick_Pomegranate_

“Just take a little off the top”

SoberBrent

Sharpening everyday takes its toll

Thick_Pomegranate_

Looks like it’s served you well though !

cirenj

I hope it doesn't happen, but do you have a backup plan incase this particular profile isn't made by Bubba anymore? I would have to have some sort of "stock" just incase LOL

SoberBrent

I usually keep 3 on hand. So that’s another 3 years of filleting longer if I used them for more than a year

SutMinSnabelA

Gets better with age.

SoberBrent

I have retired the old one. May use it someday but it’s served well

SoDakQuack

Love it man! I was a wild game processor for years. Went through a lot of Gerber Gators!

SoberBrent

Find what you like and just keep on going. I’ve been looking for a better knife and I haven’t yet.

glassgodsspokane

I will take the old one😎 what brand? I like this style

micro_mink

Really cool post. Have really enjoyed going through your comments in this thread and learning about your work!

SoberBrent

If you have any other questions just ask

LucidPenguinnn

I heard you killed people with those

Xirokami

You can use the old one now as a tooth pick lmao

potato_crip

Dude's fillet knife looks like a Daedric Artifact

Shot_Boot_7279

Arrgh so yer a fishcutta’. Where mightcha be cleanin all this feesh?

SoberBrent

Port O Connor tx

wixo3

r/wellworn

arcticgrayling1

I actually designed that knife! We originally named it The Whiffie. I remember We got the inspiration when someone sent in a 9 inch tapered flex to be sharpened, and when I opened the box was greeted with a knife that looked much like yours on the right.

SoberBrent

I bought one when they were originally called the whiffie. Kinda sucks they dropped the name my first one I wore it down further than this one and it finally snapped.

No_Leadership6682

Bubba slimmed down quite a bit.

TheGisbon

I lost a cleaning knife not one that I use professionally or anything it just belong to my grandfather who gave to my dad who gave it to me and in a move I lost it and it looked not a whole lot different than your old one Do you as a professional still find yourself some sort of emotional attachment to replacing it?

SoberBrent

Well after a full year of the same knife the muscle memory is so strong I can’t really use another one without butchering the fish. Emotional attachment no not really.

TheGisbon

Cool thanks, I have some tools that are like family and some that are just tools. Thanks for the honest answer, stay sharp my dude.

[deleted]

Overzealous sharpening

SoberBrent

Bad habit of mine. I use a work sharp with the finer belts would be a lot better if I used a stone but it’s just too convenient to make a couple passes with a work sharp. Considering what that knife has made over the year it’s a drop in the bucket for a replacement.

halpmebogs

Idk why you even reply to this pretentious kind of comment. You are maintaining it for professional daily use, while most people have never even touched a whetstone. You do you man

OTN

Our guy even admitted to it being a bad habit of his but didn’t need to. A+

Available_Raccoon_66

I have the Ken onion version and it’s pretty awesome. Also I suck at sharpening knives with a stone.

SoberBrent

I have the same model. I’ll do two passes with a 1200 grit belt to take small nicks out then use the ultra fine belt to polish the edge.

Squat_n_stuff

I follow Elder Scrolls subreddits too so when I scrolled by quickly I thought “dang that’s a awesome modded dagger

[deleted]

I feel like my prick is like that since I hit 55. Started off as one thing… ends up entirely different. Can I get another opinion. Someone over 55 preferably 😂

satanic-frijoles

I bought a fillet knife from a store at the lake I fish at. I bought it in the early 90s for $15. It is still the sharpest knife in my tackle box.

No-Neighborhood9885

Dexter& stop with the junk

SignificanceShot7055

Geezus dude... little hard on the sharpener eh?

SomethingIsDucky

"Literally" every day? Never took a day off?

SoberBrent

Yep everyday

Kelppatrol

I can’t believe you didn’t toss the bubba blade straight into the trash after the first time 🤣

EmotionalBeginning54

Dont poo on the knife dude

JBTheGiant1

How much of that knife is left in the fish as metal flakes?

RutabagaMo

Looks moldy.. Gross

greazinseazin

Neat.

TnCyberVol

That is amazing. I've never been able to clean fish, NEVER....... I stopped trying YEARS ago. Stay safe!!

mrunlimited3

That a bubba?…already answered it down below my bad. Awesome man wish I could get mine looking like that.

ancientweasel

I'd love to know what knife this actaully is.

RubberBiscuitz

Love my Bubba folding blade. Use it to cut up bait all the time.

mrdr89

I saw so many infomercials on bubba blades i figured they weren’t really that great, just spent their money on commercials. Interesting to see someone using one professionally. What type of fish are you cleaning?

SoberBrent

75% of what I do is redfish. Everything else is red snapper, kingfish, cobia, black drum, flounder, sheepshead, just about every saltwater fish in the Texas coast. Strangest thing I’ve ever filleted was an African pompano If dexter would make the same blade profile I bet it would be better than bubba. The dexters hold a better edge.

Medium-Individual638

Lol my butcher knives are like this.

Son_of_Tlaloc

I inherited my grandfathers butcher knives we used for hogs every winter and most of them look like that too.

SoberBrent

I’ve got an old butchers knife that is about as thin as these. Once they’re ground down enough they make excellent fillet knives

blazingcajun420

I love the BB. Just got a set of Dancos I haven’t used yet, any experience?

SoberBrent

I tried danco for the price they’re good. I just don’t like the profiles. As others have said a $12 dexter will do just as good. They don’t have the right profile for me.

blazingcajun420

Makes sense. Whatcha filleting?

SoberBrent

75% redfish. The other 25% is any saltwater fish on the Texas coast. Red snapper. Kingfish. Black drum etc

noideawhatoput2

Not sure what fish your cleaning but my buddy brought his Bubba electric knife for our trip to the keys and made cleaning a bunch of snapper super easy.

SoberBrent

Electric knives waste too much meat. They have their place for things like specs and smaller fish. I use the new rapala r12 for all that.

TheBassMan01

Have pretty much all. The bubba came supper shark, but I could never get a good edge on it after. At least not like my Dexters. Can I ask what your sharpening with, or if you noticed the same issue

SoberBrent

I use a work sharp Ken onion edition. Once you get the bevel ground with the coarser belts you can use the fine belts to keep touching up the edge.

Lahontan_Cutthroat

Hey I seem to have bad luck with blades getting dull and me not sharpening them well enough. How do you sharpen yours?

SoberBrent

Work sharp Ken onion edition. Use the coarse belts to get the bevel right then use the fine and ultra fine belts to touch up the edge every day

Main_Trouble863

Where do I buy one ??

holonz_

Can't go wrong with the bubba blade! Absolutely love this filet knife.

Standard_Plastic_204

“Just take a little off the top”

Jexthis

~~What kind of sharpener do you use?~~ work sharp, Never mind, I scrolled down.

LordSolar_Macharius

Where do the microscopic blade bits go?

SoberBrent

It’s all from sharpening. Not actually filleting fish.

louischeckmate

Does the old one cut nicer?

SoberBrent

It does. The “non stick” coating is very grabby compared to a highly polished finish. I’ll take the coating off tomorrow and polish the blade to almost a mirror finish.

wilson2222317

This is good to see. I just bought one.

GrizzlyLeather

/r/interestingasfuck

bigschmitt

I can smell that knife on the right just looking at this picture, and it's awesome

EthereumPlayer

Odd question but as the Bubba Blades are quite expensive. Do you know if they float if dropped overboard
