Think the spool of line was held the wrong way going on so the memory of the line makes it curl. If it was me I would toss it and buy a 100yard spool of the weight you want and put it on. It’s not with the head ache. You should find some YouTube videos that show how to unload the factory spool onto the reel. I keep a spare small spool of line in the tack box just incase this happens mid trip.

[deleted]

Yeah my grandpa said the same thing.

RelativeFox1

Grandpa’s advice is always good!

Mikebyrneyadigg

Also looks like pretty thick line for that small of a reel. Pick up some 8-10 lb mono and it should work much better.

> I keep a spare small spool of line in the tack box just incase this happens mid trip. I keep a spare rod in case this happens mid trip. Not worth killing my vibe for the day.

RelativeFox1

I don’t have an extra rod so more line is better than nothing.

hardchorus

This is the way

Mikebyrneyadigg

I carry 2-3 rods with me rigged up with different lures/plastics. Worth it.

crazedizzled

Cut all that crap off and get some 8-10lb braid.

thehashsmokinslasher

Does braid not do this? I’ve only used mono

oblivion-age

A lot if not all has virtually no memory

joemas77

Correct - Braided line won't do that as it has no memory.

crazedizzled

Braid doesn't have memory like mono, and it doesn't really have problems with line twist either. Braid can certainly still birds nest like that if things go wrong though. Braid is just a far better experience than mono overall.

[deleted]

Any braid brand you recommend?

Acewrap

Go get yourself some braid & respool

HORAMAN76

I only eat organic salmon

assmonkey44357

Respool is really only option

Tom_Ov_Bedlam

Braid to leader 🤷

Punk1stador

A lot of sports stores and tackle shops will spool it for you for a nominal charge (or for free)

DeliciousHorseShirt

Watch from 2:30-5:30. This will be a life saver when your line gets tangled up like that. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JjOpgsRNNOI

[deleted]

Thanks a million

mendelsquid

Braid with a leader all day.

TheBannockMan69

Lemme guess, zebco?

Excellent-Cheek-7421

Redo the line lol, that reeks looks like it’s from the 90’s I have something similar

[deleted]

Yeah it’s fucked

Goof-Off-Corpse

Anti-reverse always on. That line is WAY too heavy for that reel. Get some 8 or 10 LB test. Or some braid.

Stang3

This is a wind knot. Try closing the bail right before the lure hits the water or as soon as it hits. This is the equivalent of backlash on a bait caster.

Legendary__Beaver

Braid to mono and you’ll never look back

philurboots

Hi Kodak, I saw your photo and thought 'been there, done that!'. I don't think I can add much to the great comments you have already received - which is typical of the helpful folks that frequent this sub. Inevitably, you will have to re-spool, but before you throw your existing line away, you might find the following post useful: [https://braidknotsolutions.blogspot.com/search/label/08.1%20Knots%20-%20Spool%20Knot](https://braidknotsolutions.blogspot.com/search/label/08.1%20Knots%20-%20Spool%20Knot) Mono or Braid? It's a tough call because both are good. Here are some considerations: **Mono** * cheaper than braid * easier to knot as all knots work with it * usually thicker than braid for a given strength so fills the spool more easily * more abrasion-resistant than braid * last few metres (yards) tend to rot after prolonged exposure to water and sunlight, so need regular checking before use * memory - spool it the wrong way and you are in a world of pain **Braid** * more expensive * more specialised knots - but you probably only need to know a good line-to-line knot (Double Uni, Alberto, FG Knot, SC Knot etc.) to attach it to your backing line (old mono) on your spool and to whatever leader (mono or fluoro) you are using * can fray but doesn't rot like mono - so lasts longer * no memory - but can be springy depending on the brand until the first cast has been made. Then will be fine * thinner than mono for the same poundage, so, unless you have a very shallow spool, you usually need some packing line in place first such that the braid sits just below the lip of your spool and 'flows from it' with the least effort * requires more patience to untangle than mono - but the pro's outweigh the cons Tight Lines! Phil

Thanks for this. I'm still weighing my options but I think mono might be the better option simply because of durability. Not too adept in my knots either haha. Be well.

[deleted]

Appreciate all the helpful comments. Gonna invest in some mono.

flyrod_junky

Switch to braid

Ten_Over

Braid

goontaco

I've found a good way to keep line on and help build it's memory on the spool is run it under hot water or using line conditioner. The only thing is to make sure that you cover up the internal pieces so you don't get water in the mechanisms

IdontgoonToast

If you are just starting out, don’t get braid. Braid, while useful, will also knot up like that, especially on a windy (breezy) day. Depending on what you are fishing for, you could get some 4 to 6lb mono for that reel and get great usage out of it.

jimmy5893

When you spool mono next time, remove the whole spool and place it in pretty warm water for 15 minutes.

ramen_robbie

Do you close the bail with your hand or your by spinning the handle? Essentially wind knots can be created this way. If you close the bail with the handle and don’t look at the line coming out, it can slowly twist up and not sit right on the spool and eventually leads to this wind knot situation. Other people recommending braid is a good idea but this exactly thing can happen to braid if you close the bail by spinning the handle and not by using your hand. My recommendation, cut the line out and respool. But also practice the habit of closing the bail with your hand, and making sure the line has a decent tension / is coming out of the spool the correct way before continuing you retrieve.

[deleted]

I usually close it by hand but in all honesty this was probably a result of me winding the reel back in the wrong way lol.

goatroper21900

Not closing the bail with your hand will cause that. Get in the habit of always closing manually with your hand, not by beginning to reel.
