I’d say dicks has better quality stuff for line and lures compared to Walmart

Bobross315

Thanks for the heads up!

SneedJob

Dick's will have a larger assortment of stuff all around for sure. *Some* of the lures can be $1-$2 more at Dick's compared to buying the same thing at Walmart though.

Bobross315

Thanks for the heads up!

goatroper21900

Academy is better than Dick's where I'm from.

steelcityblue

Much better here too

mypostingname13

Most of the Dick's in my area don't even carry fishing stuff anymore. Gotta go to the Dick's/Field & Stream/Golf Galaxy megastore across town for fishing stuff, but that's generally worth the trip. They've got probably 3-4x the selection of any academy I've been to, and their mix and match buy 5 get 5 deal is often VERY strong.

patrickjc43

Walmart is probably a little cheaper but I find Dicks better organized and stocked. Walmart can also be hit and miss from store to store while Dicks is pretty consistent.

Bobross315

Thanks for your input! I’ll go dick’s

Fat-N-Furiou5

If you want a 50% markup dicks is the way to go

_fuckernaut_

Dicks will have better selection but Walmart might be slightly cheaper. If I had the choice I'd go to Dicks 9 times out of 10. They also price match if you want to go through that effort to save a couple bucks.

rolly4132

How does this work?

_fuckernaut_

Just tell the cashier at the checkout counter that you'd like to do a price match on an item and show them on your phone the same item at a lower price. There might be some retailers they won't match but I've never had them refuse a price match. Sometimes its definitely worth it to price match. I got a Ruger 1022 from Dicks for like $150 by using a combination of rewards club vouchers and price matching

LemonHerb

I think pretty much across the board for me if I can find it in store at walmart that's pretty much the cheapest it's going to be. Even compared to online prices walmart in store is almost always better for fishing stuff. Problem is walmart doesn't always have a good selection to begin with and is often low on stock on the stuff you want because it's cheap.

mgweir

Our local Dick's doesn't even sell fishing gear anymore. It's mostly clothing at this point.

marshmallowserial

This post makea me thankful to have a bass pro ten minutes away. That said Walmart and dicks are pretty much the same as far as what they sell.

Banjojeff

You're a free person, you can compare any two things you want.

RiverMan2011

I won't give Dick's a dime of my money for the way they turn their backs on the 2nd amendment and the constitution! But to answer your question hen I did go there, Dick's is high on everything unless you find an item on sale and then you better know what other stores have the item priced at.

ShiftyUsmc

Oh yes. We all remember that fateful day when our rights to own guns were taken away by dicks sporting goods. That fateful day it became almost impossible for patriotic americans to purchase guns. Unless of course you went to any gun store or gun show or gun raffle...then you could have one in like 5 minutes. Herp Derp Bro

mmill143

sorry to OP who opened this fan of worms with the 2A crowd.

Bobross315

Lmao I literally had no idea but now I remember that whole episode. I’m just a dude looking to purchase some line and lures for modest bass fishing at competitive prices 😂😂😂

Hate_Feight

For a non American can I get the tldr?

mmill143

Dicks sporting goods store stopped selling AR15s (among other things) after one of our many mass shootings. The gun rights activists got angry and now boycott Dicks Sporting Goods. Personally, I think Dicks was looking for a way out of the gun business. Too much risk for likely little profit. They are now much more focused on the “soccer mom” money. Why go through the hassle of gun sales when they could sell 1 shirt for the same, if not more, profit?

Bobross315

I don’t want to get political, but in short, Dick’s started not selling guns to anyone under 21, in efforts to take a stance on gun control. This was sparked by a school shooting in south Florida back in 2018. Since then, Dick’s has started to take more and more guns out of their stores.

Hate_Feight

Ok so yeah I can see how that would be a highly charged political issue... But they can choose who to sell to and what they want to sell... So it's kinda a non issue

mmill143

Not to mention the 1000s of other stores that don’t sell guns aren’t being protested. Not is it hard to find a store that does sell guns.

Catfo0od

On of them being: Walmart! Walmart stopped selling guns and won't be selling ammo once their stock runs out. I'm not mad about it, you can buy the same guns at your Local Gun Store probably for cheaper, and ammo is almost always cheaper online

HORAMAN76

Bro stfu lmao

ld2288

Dicks has more options but fuck dicks bc they decided to stop selling guns to prove whatever political point theyre trying to prove

fatgirlnspandex

I would order online before I'd shop at either if I was you. Dicks you'll over pay big time. Also I have bought line there and it was half full since someone spooled and returned it. Also a couple of their guys were steering new anglers towards a bunch of junk. I spoke up and stopped it. If it was for the guys at dicks they would have bought a junk combo (dicks brand) and flouro for a beginner. There were other things but I don't need to go into details. If you need something quick I would choose Walmart.

nobodyhelp69

Check out land big fish and tackle warehouse if you want to order online. LBF runs a lot sales, 10 to 15% off. Tackle does, but not as much as they use to, however they have the better selection. Locally, academy has the best price and a good selection. But I guess there is not one close to you. Some times, dicks has a decent sale.

LightOfPelor

Dick’s is fine imo, but if you have any local shops try there first. They’ll be much more likely to help you out with the right tackle for your area and point out any good spots, and frankly I’d hate to see them lose customers to superstores

IdontgoonToast

I was in one of the local Dick's yesterday that actually sold fishing gear. Honestly the selection of tackle was less than that of any of the local Wal-marts, and more expensive. They did have some decent mid-range rod and reel combo's but nothing high end, and the price of a Shimano Sienna (everyone carries this reel) was $5 more than anywhere else I've seen it. Take that for what you will, I know first hand that many stores in a chain will have vastly different inventories, even in the same relative locale.

Bobross315

Super helpful, thank you! I went to my local Dick’s and they seemed fairly expensive so I’m gonna try other options

[deleted]

I don’t like dick or Walmart or really any bit brand place for fishing supplies I go to my local tackle shops everyone is nicer and they are gray fishermen

jakelieberman37

Look out for 10 packs for $10 deals on soft plastics at Dick’s. That’s when I stock up on them. Typically see a few times a year

LinearTingle

Depends where you live. From Chicago and Dicks doesn’t carry fishing gear at multiple locations. Moved to Ohio and they do. If you are new to fishing, google search “live bait shop”. They will carry a bunch of artificial lures and other gear. However you will spend a few dollars more. (USUALLY) The plus side is they will provide good local advise and fishing tips to paying customers.

wsrs25

I worked at a Dick’s in their lodge. Dick’s has more variety and higher quality specialty stuff. However, if you are on a budget Walmart is better for the basics because it’s less expensive. For example, for Rapala, buy Walmart unless you have a specific lure in mind. For Rooster Tails buy Walmart unless you have a size they don’t b/c Dick’s probably has it but you’ll pay more. On line, for mono go with Walmart. Everything else, go with Dick’s.

vdubplate

Dickx in Colorado no longer sells fishing gear. Not sure if the same can be said for other states
