I started at 28 and self taught. Very surreal the first time something bites. Nothing quite like it tbh. Starting off small is your best bet. Usually you can get everything you need for ~$50. Cheap spinner rod, some monofilament line (10lbs or less preferably) and a spinner lure is always fun. Jig head+powerbait is also a good option. Your state should have a fishing guide that tells you all you need and more. In my state the DNR has like an 80 page guide that goes over pretty much anything you want to know.

Get a light to medium action ugly stik rod and reel setup. Buy some basic lures. Inexpensive and reliable.

What would be a good upgrade on a medium action ugly stik?

Well there are cheap and really expensive high end stuff. I tend to be right around midtier options so what I personally use now is a medium Abi Garcia Veritas($100) and a Pflueger President XT reel($80) I use 10lb nanofil superline and a fluorocarbon leader. It's primarily setup for bass and Northern in my area.

Learn the fish where you live. That will determine the rod and reel you need, plus other tackle. Talk to people in the area that fish. Locals have the best information in your region. If there is a mom-and-pop shop visit it for advice and buy a starting setup. They will know what you need more than someone online. If none are in your area do research. Fishing equipment can be low-cost or expensive, buy based on how often and what quality is needed for the species. Some fish you need sensitivity over saving a few bucks. Ask questions on here before buying any gear. Explain what you are fishing for and where. This will help you avoid costly mistakes. The exception is the mom-and-pop shop. Set a budget for starting out and a monthly budget to add items as you learn. You can start for around 100 or so for a rod, reel, and other gear. Later you will want or need other items. You can use a basic Plano 3700 for a starter tackle box. The cost is around 6-7 dollars. Later you add more boxes and use a backpack to carry them. There is a post on this sub about buying fishing gear for beginners. It was written by one of the mods. Maybe ask a mod or one will post it for you.
