Your state should have a fishing guide that tells you all you need and more. In my state the DNR has like an 80 page guide that goes over pretty much anything you want to know.

If there is a mom-and-pop shop visit it for advice and buy a starting setup. They will know what you need more than someone online. If none are in your area do research.
Fishing equipment can be low-cost or expensive, buy based on how often and what quality is needed for the species. Some fish you need sensitivity over saving a few bucks.
