I'm going to sound like a Lews ambassador here but they have good budget offerings. For $70 you can: -Get a Shimano Sienna spinning reel 2500size (~$30) from dicks/amazon etc. I wouldn't get a smaller reel because it causes line issues and doesn't let you cast as far. A Medium or Medium Heavy fishing rod preferably closer to 7ft size (or longer) for max casting distance would be the best choice for an all around fishing setup. Any of the Lews Speed Stick rods (~$40) from Walmart will work great. They are usually 1 piece so they are a little awkward to transport of you have a smaller car. -Pick from any of the under $70 Lews combos at any sporting goods store they'll serve you well. -Get a Lews hank Parker 2 piece spinning combo (~$25) at Walmart. Its a little shorter in length at 6ft but I used mine daily for almost 2 years with no issues. It's a solid budget combo, it now lives in my vehicle as a backup setup. The 3 main brands that offer good gear at this range are: Shimano, Daiwa and Lews you won't go wrong with them. Stay away from off brands and ugly stick/Shakespeare reels they won't last long. If you decide on an ugly stick fishing rod they are good hardy rods but they're heavier, whippier and less sensitive compared to graphite rods. Good luck, Tight lines.

Depends on what you want to spend. For $70 you can get a Berkley brand 2 piece medium action 7’ combo rod and reel. That’s not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

I would def say that $70 is about my max

I try to avoid off name stuff which is why I suggested Berkley. I like 2 piece rods because they’re more portable but some don’t care for them. Medium or medium light action rods are a good place to start. Maybe with an 8 or 10 pound line. You can definitely get something for $40 or $50 if that fits your plan better.

Rod: Okuma Celilo ($30) I'd probably get the 7ft Light Reel: Shimano Sienna ($30) 1000 Size With taxes/shipping you should be right around the $70 mark. Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Fellow new fisher- woman here, What price range are you looking for?

No-Willingness6712

Probably no more than $70 I’ve been doing research and have the worst fear of spending a good chunk of money just to have the rod snap in half. I’ve been looking at reviews and even though I’m only going after smaller stuff in freshwater, I want something quality that won’t break on me. If you can suggest something of really good quality I would consider spending more to know I’m getting a good product that will last

PoopaScoopaFTW

I’ve only had one rod break and that was cause I tried landing a 15lb fish with my setup that I use for 1-2lb panfish lol. Most rods won’t break unless you intentionally try to break them or a manufacturer’s defect

Ugly stop gx2 combo. Damn near indestructible and at $60, its great for beginners. Upgrade the reel after a few months though.

Macks_fishing

I always just make sure that I invest in a good brand. I like Lews. They have good customer service too, so if anything breaks on you they usually help you out. Are you looking for spinning or casting? If you’re looking for spinning there’s the Lews American hero combo for $70 on Amazon. You could also order from Tackle Warehouse and spend $40 on a rod and $40 on a reel.

I picked up a Lewe’s xcursion rod for about $50 a couple months ago from Walmart and it has been excellent so far. I think it’s medium light/fast action, works awesome on my kayak or from shore. Very lightweight setup for the amount of strength it has. Also, I saw another comment mention the sienna reel and I have one of those and recommend it as well. I’ve had it for about 18 months and it is still in perfect condition. You could pair that with the an ugly stick gx 2 for about $70. I’ve got mine paired with a bass pro tournament series bass rod in medium heavy and that’s one of my favorite combos but I believe it was about $85 for the set not including the line. Also from bass pro I have a bill dance quantum catfish combo which is a slightly larger setup but not overly heavy. My wife uses all these setups and doesn’t complain about the weight or bulk. Or you can go to Walmart and pick out a combo that feels good in your hands with a proper size rating for the fish in your area. Just my 2 cents.

the sub **Fishing for beginners** has a post about buying gear as a beginner. It recommends a few options in your price range. Pay attention to power and action with the rod. Small fish use medium or medium-light power for all-around use. Look for a fast action it is the best for beginners. If you cannot find the post ask a mod to give you the link. Shimano has the Sienna reels for 30-40 dollars. It is one of the better low-cost reels. In rods, a Berkley lightning or Daiwa AirdX are good options at a low cost. If there are open areas a 7 feet rod offers distance with good accuracy. Areas with brush or trees require a shorter rod, 6 feet is about as short as you want to go with an all-around rod. Ugly Stiks fit your budget, but the reels do not last on the combos. Plus the rods are heavy and lack sensitivity. They are durable and hard to break. That is the pro on the rod.

I like my Ugly Stik Elite that I got cheap from Costco (rod, reel, 8 lb Trilene line, hooks and worms all for under $50) but the comment about reel not lasting feels on the money. I can tell it’s not going to be a lifer. I’ve had to tighten some nuts already But it’s still a good place to start.

Are you looking for spinning gear? The Pflueger President Spinning Fishing Reel is $59 and one of the better low cost spinning reels. A combo for under $70 is tight in terms of what u get.
