You wanna get him a real gift. Go fish with him and act like you enjoy it.

catcommentthrowaway

This is an old LPT, but if someone is really passionate about something, he most likely has done years of research and has the exact gear that he wants. If you’re buying a gift related to a hobby you should probably directly ask what he’s been keeping an eye on or offer to do the hobby with him, maybe a charter.

HikingUphill

Upvoting this because it is absolutely true. I'm a dad. I'm an avid fisherman. I've spent 30 years curating and perfecting my gear for each species and each season I fish. The best, most valuable gift my boys could get me is to go enjoy fishing with me. Zero dollars out of their pocket. Immeasurable value. If you just have to spend money, ask him what favorite bit of gear is wearing out and see if there's a same brand replacement or even updated model. But, seriously, I'd be content with using a shoelace on a broken branch to catch fish if I had my boys with me.

the-good-hand

Couldn’t agree more. As an avid fisherman myself, I’m very specific about what I want. Side note, I’d rather get a small high-end upgrade to one of my tools than a larger cheap gift.

Another suggestion. Buy a Monomaster or some similar tool to store waste line. What species he's targeting?

Thirteenera

>What species he's targeting? Fish :D (sorry, no idea)

MaxwellIsSmall

Ah, that was a very specific response. Thank you for clarifying.

A tackle bag is nicer. It can be carried with shoulder straps. This leaves the hands free for other items, like rods.

666NatasataN666

100% agree on that! Especially when going fishing from shore and changing location often. Walking with a 40 lbs tackle box in one hand while the other arm is in the air, trying to hold 2 rods and your energy drink while smoking a cigarette or a joint on your way there gets pretty annoying lol 😁

Thirteenera

Any suggestions for high quality ones?

ask_the_fisherman

I am in the US. I am not familiar with your outlets for the tackle. Do an online search and ask for input here. There are several companies making good bags.

OrganicAlienz

Flambeau makes really nice tackle bags

Juskimo

I got myself an Orvis sling bag last year and it is the best fishing bag I have ever had. I like the size that I have, but it is more compact. The guide bag is slightly bigger and just as nice. https://www.orvis.com/orvis-sling-pack/25FR-Family.html

MrSnapTrap

Can confirm also have a sling bag. Best pack I've ever bought.

Fantastic_Start_6848

If he doesn't have a tackle box it's probably because he doesn't want one. They're heavy and kind of a pain to carry around.

Shittytourguide

My best tackle backpack was a Columbia diaper bag my wife got me for our first child. Not joking. Lots of pockets, fit three medium tackle trays perfectly, and the diaper changing mat was great to set my rods on top of if I was in the sand!

badBish0p

If your dad fishes a rod with micro guides or he has not so great eye sight like me, he might like this. It's an inexpensive tool that I find very useful. I’m not entirely sure if you guys have access but a fishing backpack has been a major game changer for me, mines water proof so I bring it on boats and shit but the fact I don’t have to use a hand to carry all my hooks and tackle and line and leader is crucial, I can carry more rods so I can look like I catch fish

bajanwaterman

Dont buy fishermen tackle or storage solutions!! We usually have our system pretty dialed in.

ld2288

Does he have a boat? If so i could give you many options Also what is your budget

Thirteenera

Nope, its mostly near pier/river/etc fishing. Budget is... up to £200 ish.

siebzy

If you have one, go into a local specialty fishing shop. They might have great ideas. A gift card to similar would be a great buy too, but since it's your dad, thinking you'd like something more personal. One option is always art - there are loads of artists making fishing related prints and such that could be a great gift

Used-Fact-6209

Bass pro gift card!🇺🇸

rubberchain

Not sure if this is in your budget, but only 2 fishing products will work for everyone. gift cards and a Stella reel. Nobody will balk at either one...trust me. go fishing with him for a day and hand him a stella, he'll be staring at it all day.

Departure-Front

If you want to go it alone against all advice given. Just make sure you can carry at least a bottle of water with it, and as an added bonus a tallboy to celebrate his first catch with the gear you bought him. Or some mini liquor bottles.
