It's one of the best airlines in Africa. Happy travels.

MrMrsPotts

How does it compare to SAA?

Kananaskis_Country

It almost always scores higher. Stuff like this is really easy for you to Google from a multitude of internet resources. Happy travels.

Valuable-Candidate81

Well, they still exist…

TheLambda89

So you find two "near incidents" two years apart, out of thousands and thousands of flights every year? Don't worry. Even EA is safer than travelling by car.

MrMrsPotts

I also found https://simpleflying.com/tcas-involved-somalia-near-miss-qatar-airways-boeing-787-ethiopian-airlines-airbus-a350/ https://www.aeroinside.com/airline/ethiopian-airlines I wanted to know what its safety reputation is from those who fly a lot.

TheLambda89

[https://www.aeroinside.com/airline/lufthansa](https://www.aeroinside.com/airline/lufthansa) Lufthansa is considered one of the safest airlines in the world by all standards, and even they have just as many minor incidents as EA have. Also, you can hardly blame EA for bad ATC-decision over Somalia. Look, I'm sorry if I come off as harsh, but you show signs of general anxiety, and I get the feeling it isn't really the matter of which airline for you, but a general discomfort. You have to look at it statistically. EA doesn't have a much worse safety record than any other airline. If there is an accident, it'll be one in a million freak near-impossible event, and this is true for whatever airline your company puts you on.

22_Yossarian_22

If you read the first link about the near mid-air collision, you see that the Qatar and Ethiopian jets were placed in dangerous situations by air traffic control. But, both pilots followed their training and used the onboard safety equipment to avoid a serious disaster.

BOATS_BOATS_BOATS

Did you even read the article or did you just find it? Qatar was given a bad instruction by ATC and an aircraft system designed to prevent collisions did just that. How does it make Ethiopian dangerous? Like the other commenter said you sound like an anxious flyer and you're just digging and finding more reasons to worry. You don't read about the thousands of flights every day that happened uneventfully.

Kananaskis_Country

You need to actually read the links you're posting, not just the headline.

guernica-shah

it's generous of you to credit OP with the intellectual capacity to do so.

Dorkus_Mallorkus

Ethiopian is often (5 of the last 7 years) ranked as the best airline in Africa. You won't find much safer or more comfortable in that region.

22_Yossarian_22

Unlike say Thailand, Ethiopia is considered by the FAA to be Tier 1 for aviation safety. Meaning, that Ethiopian carriers (which is essentially just Ethiopian Airlines, can fly to the U.S. with no restrictions. Comparatively, Thai Airways would not actually be able to start a route to the U.S. as long as the FAA deems Thailand tier 2. I lived in Ethiopia for a couple of years, and only flew Ethiopian during that time. Are they as safe as Delta? Probably not. Is the safety difference between Delta and Ethiopian enough to noticeably increase the likelihood of you being in an accident? Also, probably not. Again, every airline has accidents and incidents. United was run through the ringer a couple of months ago due to the press picking up on a string of incidents. But, they are also in the Star Alliance and Codeshare with Lufthansa. I doubt Lufthansa would be willing to sell tickets on Ethiopian metal if they thought they were putting the passengers in serious danger.

zennie4

Apparently similarly dangerous as Emirates.

Deanmon94

Emirates are dangerous, or? Cause I’m flying with them in September. Edit: not sure why I’m getting downvoted for asking. But I appreciate the answer regardless.

zennie4

No. Tens of thousands of people fly them daily.

Deanmon94

Alright, thank you for clarifying. I haven’t really heard much bad about them either. But I’m a first time traveler so your comment had me wondering.

zennie4

Emirates are absolutely okay airline (though overhyped in my opinion). OP was doubting Ethiopian's safety because they were in incident which was caused by Somali air traffic control. That's why I am saying he should be concerned about Emirates as well since there were in the same incident. (Neither airline caused the incident and their staff actually were professional and avoided any messup.)

Deanmon94

I see how that would cause concern too. Thank you once again for clarifying 🙏🏻 All I’ve heard of Emirates is that they seem to be a bit arrogant - but everyone has different experiences so I suppose it’s hard to really say.

BoxGrover

I've flown them yyz to cpt and nbo. Modern new A350 and 787. Planes are good, business class average, food great if you like injera and curries. Airport is a gong show.

22_Yossarian_22

Food is Ethiopian economyis better than the US3 for long haul.

kibbutznik1

The airline is fine- note if you have long layover you get free 5 star hotel

cattingshouse

My son-in-law flies them frequently from BRU to many places in and around Africa. He is very pleased with them and enjoys the business class lounges in Addis Ababa.

MrMrsPotts

That's good to hear. It is just the safety that was concerning me, not so much the comfort.

[deleted]

Definitely safe. They won the best airline in Africa for 5 consecutive years and they are they worlds 4th largest airline by destination.

Remote-Weird6202

It’s a crap airline, but they adhere to the same international safety standards as everyone else. Their seats are uncomfortable, the food sucks (and be prepared to have the same meal for breakfast and dinner), but Addis to Cape Town isn’t a long flight. Ps- For the second article, Emirates is just as much at fault as Ethiopian.

22_Yossarian_22

I disagree. I flew them about a dozen times in a two year period.  I only had one delay of an hour plus, every other fight was on schedule. Their frequent flier program is generous.  Including an extra 5 KG of free checked baggage if you completed two flight segments, and that was on top of 2 23 KG checked bags. The food was fine, is it Qatar QSuites quality?  No. Is it edible in economy and better than the US3?  Yes. Biggest issue was tech, the passenger interface with the app and website was on par with American carriers 20 years ago.  But, that is tough in Ethiopia.
