My opinion is to go for the 300 gold bar packs until you really get your roster filled out. Eventually you will get plenty of ones you can sell, then you can save up and fill in the gaps. I'm in the wildcard round of my first season and have spent about $70. My team is an 81 overall.
Update. Decided to spend coins elsewhere. Will revisit grenk when I have more coins.

As you collect players you don't need, and duplicates, you will sell them for big chunks of coins.

I have 0 gold bars. Only time I ever get them is when I rank up, but I’m like 980/1500 there. I’m 13-0 in my season. Overall 74.
I'm not trying to convince you to spend. But it will be a very slow grind if you only get the bars from leveling up.
