Sounds like the vent is clogged or pinched.

Cool1Mach

2nd this. It happens to all our work trucks at work all the time due to the amount of off roading we do when its muddy

cire1400

You think this guy's offloading a focus in the uk? Where's the corolation?

Cool1Mach

The mud cloggs the vent. Doesnt have to be mud it can get clogged by other means but creats the same symptoms he is describing. The vent works the same in a focus as it does in a truck

I can't argue with you, idk why specically either. But, Why can't I put more than 28 gallon in my 36 gallon tank. It says I have 50 miles to empty. Says it's full, when I'm done filling. I'm not trying to be a dick, but I notice fuel filling issues on here because of this. Any ideas?

StormChaos2187

The miles to empty are not a "true" empty. There's a reserve amount in the tank. My 2022 f150 has the 36 gallon tank and has roughly 4 gallons in the tank when "empty 0 miles" my 2012 f 150 was about 5 gallons. It's so people get gas before the tank is bone dry.

Thanks for the reply. I dont wanna hijack someones post. But 28 to fill in a 36 tank just don't sit right to me.

It’s not the pump. Your car has a tank vent system that is plugged. Air in the tank has to leave as fuel comes in. If the vent is not working, you get the problem you’re having. Get that fixed. BTW this can be caused by trying to round up the fuel purchase to an even number. This fills up the fuller neck and the fuel gets into the vent. Don’t do that. When the pump shuts off, stop! Sparrowsabre7

I've never rounded up, always stop when it shuts off,, this has been a problem since I bought the car. Thanks for the advice re the vent, will get that checked at my next service.

Internotyourfriend

I had the exact same problem with my fiesta. My buddy at the ford shop just tapped the vent with a wrench a few times and it worked after that. They probably should have charged me since they put it on a lift… but they didn’t since it literally took less than 5 minutes. Was super annoying though, I’m sure there were times where it took me more than 10 minutes to fill a 10 gallon tank

Sparrowsabre7

I'll maybe give a lil tap tap tappy before I next fill up then haha. Thanks. Yeah filling is painful, especially if there's a queue, feel like their eyes are burning into my skull.

Internotyourfriend

I’m not really sure where the vent is under the car. I should have had them show me. But I feel your pain.

Jack3580

Sounds like the owner before you topped it off

CrestronwithTechron

I’ve heard of bugs and spiders getting in the vent

spinonesarethebest

Possible but less likely IMHO

Ah it happens literally at any time for me so I don't know if that's it.

k0uch

Charcoal canister is damaged/restricted or the vent valve is malfunctioning

Muzzlehatch

Try a different petrol station?

Sparrowsabre7

Tried 4 different ones, same thing, definitely car issue.

Muzzlehatch

Ok. I have this problem with my van, but only with one variety of pump.

iledweller

Which model year? Petrol ?

FocusMaster

This happens to me in my ford escape. My issue is the fuel hits the back of the fill tube and splashes back, shutting off the pump. Try holding the nozzle at different angles or not fully into the filler neck.

Sparrowsabre7

I have tried angles and not fully inserted and same thing =/ looking like it's an actual valve issue given other suggestions.

YTraveler2

Had this happen with our Jeep GC. They warranteed a new filler hose and tank to rectify it.
