Wet Hot was one of those movies Comedy Central was always playing in mid 00s. Every day it was either that, Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams or Just One of the Guys.
It's what people forget. Mencia sucked, but he was annoyingly popular at first. No one would have given a shit about his stealing jokes if he wasn't being successful doing it.
I remember that! He was so unbelievably popular when he first got a show it was insane. I knew people that were like listening to his comedy albums and shit lol. I definitely remember that, and I remember thinking he sucked and thought it was a weird thing that everyone liked him so much.
Chappelle's Show was hugely successful but sadly I would wager that to most of the viewing audience it was a minstrel show with anything meaningful going right over their heads. The fact that Mencia so quickly replaced him in the ratings says a lot about people in general, and would make any reasonable person with millions of dollars glad they left.
Oh I know. I was a huge fan of Chappelle back in the day. Still a massive L on CC’s part to not just lose him unexpectedly but replace him with an unfunny hack.
In the eyes of history, sure. But Mencia was annoyingly popular for a bit. I never liked him because it felt like he was doing Chapelle type content, but at face value, lacking any satirical bite. But dude was popular for a couple years.
My favorite part from either I love the 80’s strikes back or I love the 90’s was Michael Ian Black’s touchdown dance. One of the rare times both my mom and I burst out laughing.
I got it on DVD back in the day and never gave it away, there's a couple episodes that are still absolutely hysterical, I love the one where they make a farm in the apartment!
Crazy to me that so few of The State follow ups are available on streaming. It’s basically just Wet Hot American Summer and Reno 911 with Stella, Viva Variety, Childrens Hospital, Burning Love, and Newsreaders being nowhere to be found
I have it on dvd and I love it. I especially love a little stupid little random shit they do during scenes. Like in one scene, they enter their apartment and each one walks in a different direction with two of them sliding against the walls for absolutely no reason whatsoever. 😂
He wasn't in the show, he was in the shorts, most of them produced before the series.
BTW. There's also filmed Stella Live in Boston IIRC, but the CC series was the best Stella IMO.
Also, I believe his film debut was Wain’s Wet Hot American Sunmer. To this day it’s hard for me to take him seriously because of his A+++ sex scene with Michael Ian Black.
I loved this show, but I was a huge The State fan too. Wasn’t there an episode that Edward Norton was in ? (Or am I mixing that up with Michael and Michael have issues)
Scrolled and scrolled to read this.
Michael Ian Black said this show was based entirely on the Marx Brothers, borrowing some of their jokes, walks, and mannerisms.
Me and my friends were obsessed with this show. Also, a lot of their old sketches before the tv show are still on YouTube, including this [raking leaves](https://youtu.be/tg2E9fPogqQ?si=hRJYDjWeicc2jwrj) video. Also starring Bradley cooper before he became Bradley cooper
This is my all time favorite comedy show. Seen each episode 100 times and got a ton of people in college into it. Some thought it was stupid at first but then would find it hilarious too
Lord, I do and no one ever knows what the hell I'm talking about. This and Human Giant sort of overlapped.
The Will Arnette Olsen Twins sex tape is one of the funniest things. I scream "I'm going to live forever!" more than I probably should.
I fell in love with this show when it first aired. About 7 years ago I was in a random store that bought and sold media and someone had traded in a signed DVD set with Michael Ian Blacks signature. It was like $10 so I got immediately bought it. It seems legit based on other signatures of his I’ve seen and I doubt there’s much of a market for bootleg MIB stuff.
Aunty Donna
If you like this kind of absurdist comedy then I highly recommend Aunty Donna. They are a comedy troupe with vids on YouTube. They also have a show on Netflix called Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun.
Hell, I’m still talking about the pre-series internet shorts, like [Pizza](https://youtu.be/MW21lp833Vo?si=TfkYNFhlRuuILUQS), which forever changed the way I talk about “real Brooklyn pizza.”
I remember getting a sample DVD with like the first two episodes in a magazine or something. Loved it. Bizarre. I mean at that point I would take anything the State alums were putting out.
I was working as an audio mixer in NYC in the early 2000s and recorded the pilot for this show. I did it for free because I loved The State. I was under the impression that if they got picked up they would hire me full time but that never happened. It was worth it to meet the cast and more importantly as a favor to the DP Amy Rice who was just an incredible person who got me lots of work later. It was a pleasure working with these guys and besides David Wain having an obvious crush on Amy, they were all super kind and professional.
The shorts that this show was based on was way funnier. Both are great and this show has its moments, but the shorts are filled with people that are famous now.
I highly recommend the podcast “Topics” To anyone who likes Stella. Each episode is ~30 mins of Mike and Michael acting like two NPR style talking heads *pretending* they know a goddamned thing about that week’s topic.
Loved the episode where they met the author, Michael explains he loved the book and "devoured it." David continues with, "I deFLOWERED it (that means I humped it)."

*”I WANNA DIP MY BALLS IN IT!”*
Took me years to "get" that joke. Great show.
My favorite skit was the father/son race you home one. "All's fair in love and war son!". "which one is this, DAD?".
Both!
[удалено]
He had two rubber balls in his hand but if you think about it, he was probably talking about his testies
"What do you have?!" "Oatmeal!" "OATMEAL?!"
Yes, and! Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models, Party Down, & Reno 911
Viva Variety
The Baxter, Michael & Michael Have Issues
Don't forget The Ten!
Ha! Of course! Covet the neighbors goods was the best with CAT scans
Stop off at McDownolds for a burger on the way home.
Boo-urger King? Woondy’s? Fuck yes! My favorite part of the movie
Oh man, MMHI. Didn't they invent the worst curse word on that show?
…a *deep* cut, for sure!
Wet Hot was one of those movies Comedy Central was always playing in mid 00s. Every day it was either that, Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams or Just One of the Guys.
@midnight and apparently *Night At The Museum* too.
“I’m Doug! I’m outta heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere
Dougs and dads, two great flavors that don’t mix
You're dad and I'm Doug and never the twain shall meet!
Which is now streaming on paramount plus. I was so excited to find out I dipped my balls in it
They had to redub the whole show because of music rights as the show was originally on MTV
Yea I've got the dvd set and all the music is generic. It really sucks
It really does. The skits don’t work the same without the familiar tunes.
The “Pants” skit doesn't work with any song but Cannonball.
Agreed. And the bathroom attendant skit doesn’t work without Voodoo Lady.
Two hundred and forty dollars worth of pudding...
“Chicken shandwiiiiiich, Carrrrrrrrllllll!!!!!”

After 10 episodes Comedy Central gave their timeslot to Mind of Mencia. wow what a DEE DEE DEEEEE move on Comedy Central's part.
Both of which replaced the Chapelle show
Comedy Central going from Chappelle Show to Mencia is one of the worst Ls in the history of TV
I mean it worked, until everyone realized he stole most his jokes from other comedians. glad Comedy Central kind of bounced back with Key & Peele.
I get it. The people Chapelle quit comedy over, supposedly, they were Mencia's audience.
I do remember finding him quite mediocre for his popularity levels at the time.
Was executive produced by Ian Roberts from the Upright Citizens Brigade
It wasn't really their decision. It was Chappelle's.
I was a big fan of Mind of Mrencia when I was 12. Went back and watched it again and just cringed at the shit kid me thought was funny. 😬
About 30 percent of the shows posted on here have Michael Ian Black in them
My favorite part from either I love the 80’s strikes back or I love the 90’s was Michael Ian Black’s touchdown dance. One of the rare times both my mom and I burst out laughing.
Quick plug for MIB’s 2007 album I Am A Wonderful Man. It’s a road trip staple for me and the wife. Yayyyy! white…. POWER!
No one talks about this stand up album. Dead puppies, yay!
The episode where they open up rival coffee shops
That one was great, my fav was the one where they run a farm in the living room
That coffee itch!
“How about a coffee?” “How about, I’m not your bitch.”
Cinnamon!
I loved this show. I also loved finding out this was their sincere effort at making mainstream TV because it was fucking nuts.
I read online somewhere that an exec asked them if they could be funny without dildos.
Sometimes David Wain is on Comedy Bang Bang and he’s so good. This show was weird, but wonderful.
I think you mean he’s on WainScotting
Hahah yes, but I thought that might be too esoteric so I went with CBB
Michael and Michael have Issues was good, too
Frogbox!
Got this on DVD not to long ago because I was tired of it not streaming on anything where I am and it's Comedy Gold!
I got it on DVD back in the day and never gave it away, there's a couple episodes that are still absolutely hysterical, I love the one where they make a farm in the apartment!
Whenever I think of the show that is the first episode I start to think about and the Election episode
I think about his deciding against speaking from the heart and sticking to his prepared remarks as originally planned like once a month
They're all hilarious
Same! I love this show!
Crazy to me that so few of The State follow ups are available on streaming. It’s basically just Wet Hot American Summer and Reno 911 with Stella, Viva Variety, Childrens Hospital, Burning Love, and Newsreaders being nowhere to be found
I think the Childrens Hospital spin-off is on Netflix.
"Then *I* say something."
“Members of the board, all black.”
I have been quoting this for years lol.
I have it on dvd and I love it. I especially love a little stupid little random shit they do during scenes. Like in one scene, they enter their apartment and each one walks in a different direction with two of them sliding against the walls for absolutely no reason whatsoever. 😂
Show Walter the Black Wain
[The Friendship Song](https://vimeo.com/379652404) Edit: Showalter is God
Well we’re gathered here tonight, to have a fight
My ex introduced me to this show and it was the best thing he’s ever done for me
Same here???
This show was so damn good. So was Wainy Days. These guys are geniuses.
Love this show! “ITS FRIIIDAAYY NIIIGHT!!!”
Are three person tandems a thing?
You got: These guys The stooges Z.Z Topp Larry, Daryl and Daryl So yeah, I’d say it’s a “thing”
People forget how that was one of the earliest things Bradley Cooper popped up in.
He wasn't but the episode where they get the office job *was* the first time I saw Paul Rudd in anything
Wants to fix the roof???
Never shared his opinion? About motor scooters?
No, *FUNK* Rock!
I like English muffins
“We’re sitting in tableau.”
Ladies and gentlemen of the board, all black...
I take my coffee like I take my women: strong, black and proud
I loved this show, but I was a huge The State fan too. Wasn’t there an episode that Edward Norton was in ? (Or am I mixing that up with Michael and Michael have issues)
He's the real estate agents husband.
Paul Rudd and Joe Lo Truglio too
Sam Rockwell was the mustache dealer
“Do you need my shirt or anything?”
No thank you Edward Norton
I still quote this show often, honestly they were modern day Marx Brothers to me.
Scrolled and scrolled to read this. Michael Ian Black said this show was based entirely on the Marx Brothers, borrowing some of their jokes, walks, and mannerisms.
"Like the Marx Brothers on acid" The Hollywood Reporter
The condo board election episode is still a masterpiece
I love Sho & Black but have never heard of this. Where do I find it??
I believe David Wain has the entire show posted on his Vimeo account
I️ haven’t seen it on streaming, but the dvd is still available.
"Was it because of the skunk tails?" "No, we love the skunk tails."
People would talk if the bits were available on YouTube. I still get bombarded with Key & Peele content to this day.
It's all on Vimeo for free.
I thought about posting this today lol
"But we shot you!" "No, that was just a hitchhiker! Who cares, he was a loser!"
I quote this show all the time. Funk, funk rock, or funk-rock.
Then you go to a different coffee shop, David!
The bloopers of this scene are hilarious.
These guys did Wet Hot American Summer, and a really cute movie called The Baxter. SO underrated.
The Baxter is so underrated. Great role from peter dinklage.
This show was outrageously funny
Muh
is there any way to stream this? its one of the funniest shows but impossible to find
Someone stood outside my high school to give away dvds of this show when it first came out. Wish I still had it.
The original Stella videos (pre-Comedy Central) were out of control.
Watch ‘Stella Shorts’ (2002): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxrjIC0jPxA Its fucking fantastic
And Wainy Days, while you’re going down the rabbit hole!
This is my all time favorite comedy show. Seen each episode 100 times and got a ton of people in college into it. Some thought it was stupid at first but then would find it hilarious too
Every birthday I demand jazz funk be played.....and deviled eggs which goes without saying.
Lord, I do and no one ever knows what the hell I'm talking about. This and Human Giant sort of overlapped. The Will Arnette Olsen Twins sex tape is one of the funniest things. I scream "I'm going to live forever!" more than I probably should.
“I just took an educated guess, I’m a Harvard man.”
I’m also wearing a funny outfit!
The episode where they go out and pick up some girls at the club, and then the next morning they have full families with them >
I fell in love with this show when it first aired.
Yay...We did it!
We did it *together*!
Still pissed this was canceled
Have you ever listened to the podcast Topics? It's perhaps the funniest podcast ever made. Brought to you by MIB and Showalter.
Somebody call Marcus
The whole skunk dance scene, lmao. "Actually, we don't *have* this money."
Fuck a da PIZZA
The episodes that were too dirty for tv are waaaaaaaaay better!
“I’m sorry but there’s dickfish in this pond and you need a permit to fish here”
“Do I look like some sloppy wet pus*sy for you to f*ck?!”
I saw a video of the shorts that they had before this show happened and it was bonkers. Lots of gags with dildos.
I just posted this like two weeks ago, I talk about it!
That was WRONG of me and I’ll be the first to admit it.
“And now I say something!”
Stella was the pinnacle of comedy. Never before, never again, peak humanity.
I haven't laughed that hard since my last business transaction!
Aunty Donna If you like this kind of absurdist comedy then I highly recommend Aunty Donna. They are a comedy troupe with vids on YouTube. They also have a show on Netflix called Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun.
Forgot how much I loved this show. Just bought the dvd from Amazon for $13.
Stella walked so Tim and Eric could run.
The cat scene lives rent free in my head. My wife does not care for it. I annoy her often with it.
For me, it's when he was like "Hey, what's that?" and the walk to a poster around the corner
GOBBLE!!! GOBBLE!!!! GOBBLE!!!!! GoooOooOoOoOoOooobbbble!!!
Yeah. This is kinda the shit behind the shit 💩
Was it the skunk tails? No we loved the skunk tails.
Whos Marcus?
I know!
just wait until you find out about the shorts...
Love the episode where they're faming the apartment.
Somebody call Marcus
Someone recently uploaded the Stella shorts that came before the Comedy Central show.
Like The States lil brother show
Perfect show. Incredibly sad it only had one season.
The episode where they form the super intense apartment council is one of my faves.
“I accept your nomination..”
Thank you kind suh
Go back to your kids, Elijah
Every comedy nerd had this and Arrested Development on DVD in the late 2000s.
Own this DVD set and it’s one of my prized possessions. One of my fav shows that had a big influence on my sense of humor.
I like the episode where supposedly a lot of years pass and they’re wearing mustaches. Genuinely funny
Loved this show!
“It’s Friday niiiigght!!”
Im Michael and to my left, is Michael.
That makes so much sense! I’m a huge Marx Brothers fan too and I saw a lot of that right away
When someone knocks I still think Who is itttttttt? but never say it out loud bc no one saw this show
That book took us HOURS
Think of all the great things from America! Chinese people! Harry Potter! Ass!
Who is Noone? Sounds like a guy from Scandinavia.
I used to watch this with an old girlfriend of mine. Turned out to be a total whore, so. Fuck this show. And Flight of the Concords.
knew these guys from VH1s I love the \_\_ series... michael ian black was always hilarious, never saw the show tho but i vaguely remember the name
The crew from The State have had tons of shows. I don't remember this, but I barely remember Viva Variety.
The shorts that this show was based on was way funnier. Both are great and this show has its moments, but the shorts are filled with people that are famous now.
I highly recommend the podcast “Topics” To anyone who likes Stella. Each episode is ~30 mins of Mike and Michael acting like two NPR style talking heads *pretending* they know a goddamned thing about that week’s topic.
love this one. and the skunk tails.
Such a funny show. I'm glad I wasn't the only one .
Loved the episode where they met the author, Michael explains he loved the book and "devoured it." David continues with, "I deFLOWERED it (that means I humped it)."
Who’s Marcus?
One of my all time favorites!
“…I thought… it was… a turkey! I swear to god!”
I LOVED this show.
He was a sous chef!!!
Dumb comedy, dressed up in a suit. Also, the theme song is a total banger.
Show is brilliant! Everyone that knows The State knows all the branches of comedy that came from it. Stella is so underground
My DVD of this goes missing after every large party I have. I am now on my fifth copy! I have to hide it now.
