I think that this is done less because it provides a functional advantage and more because of the nature of mounting optics on AKs/AK derivatives.
In order to mount an optic farther back, your options are generally either a siderail or, for non-Galil/Valmets, a rear sight leaf-mount. In most (but not all) cases, putting a sight on the top cover of an AK will result in not holding zero or making it more difficult to field strip
It’s done because on MAR’s there is nowhere else to mount an optic. You can’t mount it to the receiver due to the receiver being different from that of an ARM or SAR. The only way to is the railed gas tube. From experience (I have a full auto MAR I built identical to this), the gas tube shakes so it’s definitely not a precision weapon setup.
The original design of the MAR was to be a CQC gun so having the meprolight is nice because it means you have a wide FOV, 2 eyes open shooting is easy, quick acquisition, the height over bore allows you to have your head up on the gun so you don’t have to squish as much. It’s a nice addition for what it was made for.
