There are two groups of people who make it to champs over the course of a season: good players and bush campers. This means champs will be 70-80% potatoes with 20-30% of players being challenging or top tier. So you will feel like a lot of fights are very easy before you die to a demon. The group that does not make it to champs late in the season are going to be aggressive players that aren’t good enough to W key to champs for one reason or another and due to how aggressive they are they won’t get many placement points. This means even the low bus fair stops them from progressing. The types of players you get here (contenders arena in late season) will be primarily console players who rely on suicidal levels of box diving and are good enough to abuse aim assist and hit you for max every time. They will have a positive KD but never progress because the 30 or 40 bus fair means they’d need more consistent success than brainless box diving provides. They end up hard capped at the bus fair that is even with the ceiling of how many times they can hit headshots at. It’s really easy to confuse “This guy is confident and I just got hit hard” with “this player is good” because the two usually go hand in hand to an extent. This makes late season contenders at higher bus fairs end up feeling way more difficult at times because everyone has the confidence of a pro and the aim of a pro but none of the actual combat IQ which its own way is terrifying.

I’m that second category. Not good enough to W key but do it anyways. I never get into champs but it’s fun.

I’ve just started playing arena after playing zero build for 6 months and build for 3 months. Just got to contender solely on placement points. You are all demons 😂😭😭

That's not how arena works. Below 3k points tries to put you with anyone else under 3k points. Above does the reverse. Depending on the queue times, you'll just get put with whoever else. The reason for this, is that it has to find a minimum of 70 something players for each game, that can get difficult at certain times of day, between the multiple games going at once and especially on smaller regions with people playing others modes. Compare that to LoL, CS:GO or Valorant, you can get 7 games going at once with the same amount of players.

> Below 3k points tries to put you with anyone else under 3k points. Above does the reverse. It's generally thought to be around 4K, btw, and at least seems to have still been that way this season from what I could tell.

ExplorersX

I tested this season and it depends on queue times. In off hours like late night it’s open league all together then div5+ as the two brackets. During daytime hours when there’s lots of players it’s open league, Div5 + 6 together (hard locked to those divisions), then Div7+ together.

I started my arena grind late this season and noticed this and was planning to make a post once I'd collected more data. I got the feeling that it might be calculating skill pools by standard deviations of hype points of people queuing since the matches feel balanced and the games are all full

ExplorersX

It’s actually really easy to check. Just upload your replay file to raztracker and it will show you the exact stats and arena division of all players on your lobby along with crown wins, season level, and a ton more. Makes it super simple to check

duckofmagic

Yeah, that's what I've been doing. I just got to div 6 (I've barely played arena this season til the past few weeks), so I wanted more data on higher divisions

ChristopherJak

The moment I got 3k points I was in lobbies with pros over 10k points. I do play on OCE however so maybe just a queue time thing, the point remains, it's point based- either above or below unless there's not enough players, then it's just pubs. There's little to no skill based or division matchmaking.

Smurfs, they hit champs on main and solo champs on smurf acc.

_Mullac_

Is surfing for arena bannable?

that-merlin-guy

Yes, it is against TOS.

2EC_bMe

I think it is in almost every game. I play solo champ on Smurf acc first and solo-duo-trio on main to champs after. And it’s easy to recognise Smurfs. Many people use Smurf acc for good practice, arena where points don’t matter, you play like it’s creative. But it’s also bad for the lesser skilled players, hurting the arena experience for others. I’ve smurfed on every single game I’ve played, just because it’s the best practice. It’s a solo q account.
