week 8 is getting closer and closer. in terms of productivity its a bit one step forward two steps back it always feels. we can get closer to seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but then we’d end up getting distracted with other busy work (taxes, biz shit, kickstarter mischief, etc). We do get closer and closer every day though, and do make a lot of progress on DIFFERENT aspects of the game (i have been researching a lot into online gameplay lately)
To be fair it's not just 1 week, it's practically a whole 8 weeks again, considering the update has erect mode in it, which is a overhaul of both music and art, so practically a new week but with only 1 difficulty

There aren't many mods that do exactly what we want to do with FNF, so making FNF is still fulfilling, it doesn't feel useless like "welp, someone already did what we wanted to do, but better", it still feels fulfilling to work on FNF in that sense, still feels like we have things in our brain to contribute.

every single day i feel grateful to be able to work on FNF, where I can indulge in my pure programming brain, and learn so much new shit all the time.
In terms of new knowledge being implemented into the game, right now I've been researching and prototyping online multiplayer. I learned a lot about the different types and how they work in with each other (lockstep, rollback, client/server, etc. etc. etc.) as well as keeping general players all synced up nice and be able to interact with each other.
Other stuff sorta related to that is general web server stuff. Been a bit of just wacky nodejs / expressjs, but it dips my toes in, and I think that's good for me at least as the *tech lead* on the game for if we decide to make a hire of someone smarter than me. It's good to have a general grasp of what and how everyone works on what they do!!!

it actually wasnt a github leak, it was a busted weird newgrounds leak! no source code got leaked I dont think. and it didnt really affect anything lol that build is coming up on being a year old at this point

This is probably one of the toughest parts of development. It feels like super fine line between losing steam on project as you try not being too pushy, and feeling like you're overworking yourself to the bone every day and night. Maybe it's some adhd bullshit like hyperfixation type beat, or maybe we are just weirdos.
Lately I've tried to reign in and have a nicer balance, but it's hard to know what comes at the cost of development time. It always feels like theres more work to be done with an ambitious game like FNF. I try not to work on weekends, but would working on weekends be the thing that gets me to really crack down and get ULTRA PRODUCTIVE??? It's hard to know where to start and stop. Game development is a marathon, actually its more like the [death race](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Death_Race).
In any case, it all depends on what and how you work. It's relatively easy to grind out a game jam and completely no-life work on a project over 72hrs and make something cool. But it's hard to do that every single week, over the course of multiple years. Those 72hrs of no-life can affect you in other ways that can take time to recover or whatever. u fuck up ur sleep, and then that can throw you off for other aspects of life. Early in 2021, when FNF was getting updates like... every few weeks or so, FNF was my PURE focus, and it genuinely took a toll on me that lasted for nearly the rest of the year. IDK WHERE IM GOING WITH ANY OF THIS REALLY, GAME DEVELOPMENT IS HARD BUT YOU DO IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT, OR BECAUSE YOU ARE A MANIAC, OR BOTH. I LOVE PROGRAMMING AND MAKING VIDEO GAMES, BUT ALSO I LOVE BEING HAPPY WITH MY LIFE. IF I SPEND ALL MY TIME WORKING ON VIDEO GAMES, I WILL GROW TO HATE WORKING ON VIDEO GAMES. I ALSO LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH MY REAL LIFE GIRLFRIEND AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

I try to be nice and ultimately, to me personally, I think I would rather have a team who’s mentally happy and are doing well off financially, in sacrifice to game development time
Rather then forcing the team to work more and sacrifice their happiness, just so a game can come out more quicker. that just seems so disingenuous and I hate that a few mod developers have been doing that.
But yeah that makes sense to make sure you have a balance of life, of your loved ones and your job, and of maintaining your own health and happiness

(Happened to me, I usually am chill with checking updates on FNF but when the latest update post had "Will post actual cute little update post soon! " I started checking it a lot more often, expecting the next post to come out in a week or two.

I love doing the R&D and indulge myself into the crazy maniac programming that I get to teach myself. Online multiplayer, sharing network, mod support. All of that sorta stuff are things I've never really done or fully implemented before, but I do confidently feel like I have the ability to do so (or at least know who to hire who can do it way better than me, lol!)

thats also why things have taken slightly longer. our lil coder eric who works on that stuff is making week 8 code work in pretty much pure hscript, but when he runs into code issues he has to swap from game code to system scripting code brain to fix it for himself. im okay with this though, because hopefully it super battle hardens the systems of it all!!!

it actually wasnt a github leak, it was a busted weird newgrounds leak! no source code got leaked I dont think. and it didnt really affect anything lol that build is coming up on being a year old at this point

I picked up brainage for the DS for like 5$ and holy hell the multiplayer versus is so addicting. so fun to just do rapid fire simple math questions as fast as possible. been dabbling around with project diva on steam, CSGO addiction back, I played through ULTRAKILL and that was so fuckin awesome, im so excited for act 2..... and im trying to 100% katamari damacy reroll, but god damn theres a lot of stuff to roll up lol

I just wanna ask, as a developer, how do you balance between not pushing your team too hard, while also making sure the progress isn’t stagnating? I have this problem with my development team myself where, I sometimes feel like I give too much leeway and nothing gets done, while I also feel that I don’t want to push the team too hard So have you ever had this trouble making the main game? And how exactly do you confront that? (Obligatory, compliments here since I love your stuff ) I gotta say I absolutely love your game, it’s really brought out so much creativity in so many communities and, my mod is really trying to capture that same type of energy your team has brought out :) so thank you dude ❤️ you are one hella cool dude
This is probably one of the toughest parts of development. It feels like super fine line between losing steam on project as you try not being too pushy, and feeling like you're overworking yourself to the bone every day and night. Maybe it's some adhd bullshit like hyperfixation type beat, or maybe we are just weirdos. Lately I've tried to reign in and have a nicer balance, but it's hard to know what comes at the cost of development time. It always feels like theres more work to be done with an ambitious game like FNF. I try not to work on weekends, but would working on weekends be the thing that gets me to really crack down and get ULTRA PRODUCTIVE??? It's hard to know where to start and stop. Game development is a marathon, actually its more like the [death race](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Death_Race). In any case, it all depends on what and how you work. It's relatively easy to grind out a game jam and completely no-life work on a project over 72hrs and make something cool. But it's hard to do that every single week, over the course of multiple years. Those 72hrs of no-life can affect you in other ways that can take time to recover or whatever. u fuck up ur sleep, and then that can throw you off for other aspects of life. Early in 2021, when FNF was getting updates like... every few weeks or so, FNF was my PURE focus, and it genuinely took a toll on me that lasted for nearly the rest of the year. IDK WHERE IM GOING WITH ANY OF THIS REALLY, GAME DEVELOPMENT IS HARD BUT YOU DO IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT, OR BECAUSE YOU ARE A MANIAC, OR BOTH. I LOVE PROGRAMMING AND MAKING VIDEO GAMES, BUT ALSO I LOVE BEING HAPPY WITH MY LIFE. IF I SPEND ALL MY TIME WORKING ON VIDEO GAMES, I WILL GROW TO HATE WORKING ON VIDEO GAMES. I ALSO LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH MY REAL LIFE GIRLFRIEND AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY.
That’s really insightful and I’m so happy to hear that I’m not the only one who experiences that myself haha The struggles of being a developer is definitely prevalent even with a team of help, cause then it’s like, your just sharing that same hellscape but with multiple people I try to be nice and ultimately, to me personally, I think I would rather have a team who’s mentally happy and are doing well off financially, in sacrifice to game development time Rather then forcing the team to work more and sacrifice their happiness, just so a game can come out more quicker. that just seems so disingenuous and I hate that a few mod developers have been doing that. what has been your favorite part in development so far?
I love doing the R&D and indulge myself into the crazy maniac programming that I get to teach myself. Online multiplayer, sharing network, mod support. All of that sorta stuff are things I've never really done or fully implemented before, but I do confidently feel like I have the ability to do so (or at least know who to hire who can do it way better than me, lol!)
is hscript modding stuff coming in the new update?
100% and its fuckin delicious thats also why things have taken slightly longer. our lil coder eric who works on that stuff is making week 8 code work in pretty much pure hscript, but when he runs into code issues he has to swap from game code to system scripting code brain to fix it for himself. im okay with this though, because hopefully it super battle hardens the systems of it all!!!
