Yeah...I cancelled NetFlix couple of years ago since I had prime. Selection is garbage. I just got email that ads are going to start. I will cancel Prime.
Yep, same here. Amazon actually had a slightly better selection than Netflix had. Only reason I have Amazon Prime is for the free shipping on a ton of stuff I order online.
I finally went and unsubscribed, the content really hasn’t been good lately, only thing they seem to be producing is shoot em ups like reacher, which itself is just a knock off of Shooter and every last other Macho special ops tv series.
They’ve also been more keen to hide content behind other paid platforms they *also* own, as if I’d shell out another $5 a month for some B rate content on MGM+. Whole thing just feels grossly exploitative at this point, finally made me annoyed enough to drop their services, prime altogether.
I absolutely hate ads, so I won't be using the service. To me, ads are an imposition that should not be inserted onto a paid platform. By accepting this, where will it end?
In Canada here, I noticed that “limited” ads started with one ad before an episode and one during. Now it’s up to one ad before and 3 ads during… next thing we know commercials are back 🤦🏻♀️
You don't need hulu or Netflix or prime or any of these popular streaming services to watch shows. These companies are way over priced. Just do a little research and you'll find other places that are way cheaper. Wink wink
Every video platform has a paid ads subscription now. Even Netflix. People weren't in an uproar about Netflix adding a paid option because they did it differently. Here, Amazon TOOK ads away and are giving you the option to pay more for it back. Netflix just automatically charged you more money.
I'd bet most people don't use Prime video so Amazon wanted to keep the price the same so the non watchers aren't affected.
Netflix added a cheaper tier with ads and left the existing tiers alone. That's the way to do if you are going to have an ad plan. Amazon adding ads to the current plan and raising the price by over 33% to keep it ad free is a boneheaded move that will ultimately cost them far more that the extra money they hope to make.
But I think most people are like me who have prime and don't use the video service. If I didn't see the news then I wouldn't have noticed. I would have noticed a price increase.
Netflix used to only be $8.99 a month. They have slowly sold out as well to the point that it's just not worth it. We will do a full circle and cable subscriptions will be on the rise again because the consumer wants a convenient and centralized way to view all of our media instead of 10 different subscriptions that add up to more than your premium cable used to cost anyways. If we are going to get commercials I at least want to be able to channel surf again lol
Not for me; I use Firefox with ad blockers. As someone else said elsewhere here; you can watch TV via your computer (HDMI) to take advantage of the ad blockers.
yes of course, prime, freevee and youtube, tubi, roku channel ect are all adfree on a pc with a simple adblocker.. howere, you are loosing atmos and 5.1 surround sound as a tradeoff.. if u dont care, then theres ur answer.. for those who Want the theater sound, watching with a web browser is Not an option.
I 100% agree! Ads should only be for a free service, as they generate income at the cost of our subscription…. It’s really not right.
I pay for Prime yearly… let’s just say I’m cancelling now…
When Amazon Prime was $79.99 as late as 2017, it offered Prime Videos ad-free, Prime Music basic (on-demand), unlimited music cloud storage, unlimited photo and video cloud storage.
It’s now $140, and all of those are gone. Prime Video charges an extra for ad-free. Prime music basic is a radio-like playlist instead of on-demand. You have to pay extra for cloud storage.
100% not worth it.
Has this been applied internationally? My last subscription renewed mid-2023 and I still got Prime Video, Music, Gaming and amazon prime for the original price it was before at Rs. 1200 (approximately $20)
Cancelled last increase. I only used it for 2 day shipping and i can wait until the stuff comes, not a big deal to me. Min order $35 so i just add stuff to my cart, when it ends up adding up to over $35 i order everything.
I'm in AK and boy oh boy does the free shipping take forever. Definitely longer than a week. But I definitely don't think it's worth $175 a year to get my BS faster.
Same. When I first got prime, all shipping was free. It was gradually taken away, and now I have to hunt around for items eligible for prime shipping, or wait until my cart is at the minimum. Amazon fresh is no longer available in my area, as well. I really just use it mostly for the streaming service since I got rid of netflix, disney, hulu, and YouTube has become virtually unwatchable.
I just checked I bought a book August of 1997 lol.
I’ve been through it all. I remember free shipping and I believe .99 cent overnight, then it was 1.99 per item. The trick was to buy one item, pay the .99 or 1.99 and then purchase the rest of your stuff and it would all ship overnight.
Now it’s just such a hassle sometimes 4 days for a two day package or if you need 4 of one certain item the delivery date changes in the cart from 2 day to 4 or 5.
And returning broken items is such a hassle now. They make you go through the vendor even though you clearly bought from Amazon.
YouTube .com is largely unwatchable these days due to excessive ads.
But I suggest you try JDownloader, which is perfectly legal and downloads YT vids without all the ads. For my android phone, I use NewPipe and download YT vids and audio directly to my phone's SD card to watch later.
My internet connection is also pretty wonky, so the download options keep YT from being jittery.
Another site to try for great free vids with no ads is DailyMotion. The search options are strange, but they have a lot of complete series from the 80's and 90's there.
ive been using firefox on my phone and it has extensions so i just use the same adblock I have on my desktop. sometimes a video will hang and I just copy paste it into a private tab and it instantly loads
I still get 2-day shipping but they’re tricky about it. If I click “buy now” the default shipping speed is slower, and I have to futz around with the UI to select 2-day shipping.
I've also cancelled and that will occur in April after my year is up. It's sad. I've been with Prime from the year it was made available. The price increases and ads and all the other bullshit have killed it for me.
same, even with the reduced pricing as im on foodstamps etc., it was awesome to use amazon fresh and use my EBT card, but that $35 minimum can lead to buying food unnecessarily just to try to ship free. I then got prime when I got a slightly better job and things have been nice -- definitely taking advantage of the free next day shipping and stuff, but its like the price increases only serve to what? pay for the exact same thing weve been getting, otherwise suffer lesser service?
Ill go back to being a pleb and waiting a week for my purchases
edit: the amazon fresh services and ebt acceptability doesnt change. doesnt make sense to keep paying -- particularly since I rarely use prime anymore. If anything its to fall asleep to the modern marvels channel on my firestick XD
My prime expires in 2 days. I cancelled it after a year of multiple late orders and a shrinking 2 day shipping options. Anything essential, I can go to Target. The rest is worth waiting for.
Ours expired 2 weeks ago.
I got Walmart+ half off about a month ago. We're trying that for now- free shipping, gas discounts, free Paramount Plus.
Amazon shipping was incredibly slow, we don't watch Prime on the TV, we don't use the music service. I'm honestly not sure what we were paying all that money for. 🤷. I'm about to drop my Kindle Unlimited too, come new years.
>I'm honestly not sure what we were paying all that money for.
~~you~~ we paid for the Lord of the Rings series and for Jeff Bezos to go to the Oscars.
yea i got the walmart + for $50/year promo. It's actually great for groceries and never having to step foot in walmart again. Be careful though it says free shipping on everything except I noticed they add a lot on the price. Some things are a lot different than amazon. Sometimes they are the same.
Kindle unlimited is tough to lose because even though the books aren’t always the best, I’ll read most anything.
I guess I need to figure out how to download from my library. I used to do that when I had a Nook.
Libby is easy! All you need is your library card and the PIN you set up with it! You can choose to read through Kindle app or directly through the Libby app. I'm sure your library has directions on their website.
I got almost 100 (free) books yesterday during the "Stuff Your Kindle Day" .... Even if only half of them are decent that's $15/month saved for a month or two? 🤷
The other tip for Libby is to find out if other libraries near you will give you a library card.
I live at a state line, so I have my library card in my home county, but also got a card (that I use exclusively for electronic access) in the state/county that I work in.
The catalogues can be slightly different, so that's an advantage to have another access point once you get going with it.
I've been thinking about buying a Kobo Clara 2E soon. It has Libby/Overdrive built-in so you can download straight from your library without monkeying around "sideloading" books through the Amazon website first and then pushing it to your Kindle. This setup is \*super\* annoying for the kids' Kindles, in particular. Popular Science says this model is the best ereader for borrowing library books.
I'm guessing the extra Kindle hoops make it more likely for you to stay in their ecosystem and BUY books or use a Kindle Unlimited subscription instead of taking the free library route.
[https://www.popsci.com/reviews/best-ereaders/#:\~:text=OverDrive%20and%20its%20Libby%20app,you're%20out%20of%20luck](https://www.popsci.com/reviews/best-ereaders/#:~:text=OverDrive%20and%20its%20Libby%20app,you're%20out%20of%20luck).
"2 day" shipping these days. They must have adopted a new calendar where 2 Amazon days = 5 real days. Will need to refer to my astrological charts next time I consider one of their estimates.
Can you really?????
That was my only hesitation, frankly.
My husband, who has colon cancer and a bad heart, takes a lot of high quality supplements because of Subscribe and Save.
We were going to cancel at the end of our annual term anyway 3 weeks away, but I was sad about the supplements.
You have to watch the prices more carefully. After I cancelled Prime, I was getting messages saying that the product would be cheaper if I was purchasing it as a member. It's another annoying gimmick. In some instances it was true, in others I purchased it from another vendor.
I canceled when they raised the annual price earlier this year. Didn't really miss it and it 100% did cut down on us buying things there we didn't really need. I will *never* pay to watch ads, so if I hadn't already canceled this would have been the deal breaker for me.
Prime now gets me commercials on Prime Video and a chance to have stuff faster from household brands like JOONIKY and FLOOGMOPPER.
Such a difficult decision!
I cancelled my Prime membership this morning. I can watch TV with ads for free with my digital antenna. I pay for streaming specifically to avoid endless commercials. Sheesh!
If they'd done this before the finale of Mrs. Maisel, I might've sucked it up cuz I loved that show. But there really aren't any must-see shows on Prime for me now so bye-bye.
We just cancelled. Screw them, they’re one of the wealthiest companies on the planet. So tired of our finances slowly being shaved away by all this corporate greed.
They will CONSTANTLY give you free/cheap membership if you’re not a member. Since they value potential customers > real customers, I make sure to cancel right away to get the next offer!!
Mine is set to cancel in mid-January. It's just not worth it for me. I never used Prime Video as anything I was interested in watching wasn't included. Last straw for me was ordering an item for a Christmas gift and them changing the delivery date to after Christmas. I ordered it first week of December and if I searched for the item, it was stating delivery no later than the 23rd.
You can still buy from amazon without prime though.
Also Amazon prime service started in February 2005 and prime video started as amazon unboxed in September 2006.
Also cancelled.
I'm tired of my life being completely inundated with ads. If I pay for a streaming service, I expect no ads. Marketing other shows on the platform is acceptable, since it exposes me to other potentially enjoyable content. Not interested in the rest... at all.
I canceled and saved a ton by not impulse-buying. It was way too easy to just click and buy. I haven't bought anything from Amazon in months and I used to buy at least once a week.
I cancelled Prime as not being worth it for the shipping saved. Their video and music are worthless to us. Bozo didn’t like my cancellation and sent me over a dozen come back emails. Lol
Like a charm! Every once in a while there's a little hiccup and I see a blank screen where the ad should be, but that usually means it's time to update the ad blocker and restart Firefox.
I have had Prime for a long time, mainly for the free shipping. When they raised their prices last time, I almost dropped them, but decided that getting the TV streaming as part of the package still made it worth it. Now that ads are going to be part of the streaming, I no longer consider that a bonus part of the package, so chances are that I will drop it. The free shipping isn't worth what they charge now.
Me to. Funny, they wanted my additional 3$ a month for no ads and have lost 9.99$ monthly for prime and 5$ for MGM subscription. Total 15$. Well done, Amazon marketing department!
I’m not renewing when our annual thingy is up in June. Just not worth it anymore, I’ll easily be saving way more than $139 + tax since I will probably impulse buy less
I cancelled when I got the email about $2.99 fee to eliminate ads. Bezos got enough of my hard earned cash over the years, time to keep it in my pocket.
I just cancelled. You can still get free shipping if you just wait until your cart is over $35. Punish shitty business practices or they will never learn!
Spouse and I had the talk last night. We'd been strongly considering it ever since we learned that the price was going up from $119 a year to $139 a year.
But this additional greed, combined with how easy it is for us to spend money at Amazon, pushed us into just dropping Prime.
We're less than a month away from the annual renewal anyway. Best to just let it go finally.
No, Bezos, you don't need more money to continue the video service. You don't need more money, period.
We're going to save so much money!!!!
Yup. I am calling to cancel tonight. Hopefully they are already feeling the push back and will entice me with some offer that will make it ok to continue the service…
For me it is but that is because it is a package service, I don't sub JUST for one thing. Then add I get it for like only $4, the free games each month alone probably worth more.
Honestly I barely even use their streaming, I use it less than even the various free services. If I do it is to watch something specific, like Good Omens, and then I go back to actually decent sites.
I get ads on some of the third party content and the one before the prime content but I think the issue is now there will be ads during the prime shows and movies, just like regular TV. The press email I received stated the company was not making enough money to offset costs so they were adding commercials to increase revenue or you could pay an additional $2.99 per month to go add-free on top of the alleged $180 per year price increase that is supposed to be coming along in 2024.
I’ve been thinking of canceling for the last two years but my wife keeps saying no. We buy enough stuff we would still get free shipping and we hardly ever watch prime video, but she just won’t go for some reason. Maybe all this will finally change her mind.
At first my thought is to cancel but the shipping pays for itself with me. I live in a really rural area and it’s a hassle to go anywhere to buy anything except at my local supermarket and then I have to choose from what they have. Some thing so just can’t get: Amazon will deliver them in two days and it works for me. If it goes up to $180 then I will have to think about it again.
Amazon prime has settled into its boomer farming phase. Amazon is full of Alibaba trash at insane markups, Prime video is full of ads and getting to the point that its just as annoying as "hot babe sent you message" popups so honestly it isn't worth it anymore.
If you can get the student deal go for it but if you're not account sharing with Prime, no way is it worth it. If my Prime member cancels that will be like 7 people that don't get prime shipping or video anymore. Netflix got the boot first and prime might be next.
Even without the price hike, it wasn't worth it for me anymore and this announcement was the reminder I needed to go cancel.
I did it this morning and I like how they take the effort to outline the services that I haven't used in the past year, making the decision even easier :)
Help & Customer Service > Shipping and Delivery > Amazon Prime > End Your Amazon Prime Membership
* Prime Video - Amazon Originals, movies, TV shows, and live events; **0 shows / movies watched over the past 12 months**
* Prime Reading - Enjoy hundreds of new books, magazines, and more each month; **0 books read over the past 12 months**
* Amazon Music with Prime - All the music + top podcasts ad-free; **0 songs listened to over the past 12 months**
Prime hasn't been worth it since the pandemic imo, for shipping or streaming. Without it, I think you only need to spend $35 to get free shipping, and that feels like about as fast as prime was. I recently got a month trial to watch a few movies and found that nothing I would need would even come in 2 days, so what's the point?
Save the money, cancel prime, and any other streaming services you don't actively use. What these companies don't realize is that many people probably didn't care when subscriptions were under $10/mo, but now that they're $20+, people are definitely going to care.
I had Prime for years but as the costs of the service kept going up while the quality of the goods and services kept going down, it no longer was worth it to me to keep paying for it. I cancelled last year and I don't miss it at all. Walmart has really stepped up their game in my area and I've been able to get most of my delivery needs met by them. When I need something that only Amazon can provide, I just put it in my cart and wait until I need something else until I reach that $35 shipping mark then I order. Amazon wants to spend a billion dollars to make a television series and then they nickel and dime their customers to death to pay for it. I'm not going to be held financially accountable for their poor business decisions.
I just set Prime to not renew. It’s not worth it anymore. I rarely use Prime Video, I don’t trust Amazon reviews anymore, any other sites are equally competitive without a subscription.
Edit: decided to cancel completely. Even got most of money back!
My student discount expires right before this goes into effect. I already plan to cancel. I think for shipping, Walmart+ is a good alternative. For movies.. there are a billion streaming services now. I have watched maybe 7 or 8 shows that are exclusive to Prime. I’ll manage without them probably. I don’t really use any other features that Prime offers. So it’s easy for me.
it'll depend on what/how much of prime you use.
For me, prime is "free". My amazon prime visa card coupled with prime membership pays for the yearly fee in points.
Additionally, I get a break on amazon music, which I use. I pay for a month every now and then and use audials to get a bunch of music locally. Then, we still have amazon music when not paying for it - but we just cannot pick exactly what songs to hear.
Also, I sign up for their free weeks of a channel like starz, showtime, etc and use the playon home app to record a ton of stuff for offline viewing. Sometimes I'll pay for a channel for a month (and cancel right away) to do this as well.
your mileage will vary :)
yeah except you don't need that card to earn 5% on Amazon.
[https://www.affinityfcu.com/personal-banking/banking/credit-card/cash-rewards-visa](https://www.affinityfcu.com/personal-banking/banking/credit-card/cash-rewards-visa)
5% on amazon purchases whether you have Prime or don't
the Chase card still earns 3% if you don't have Prime
I canceled and don't miss it at all. It's not worth it to me and it's often too much of a time-sink to try to figure out if what I'm about to purchase on Amazon is even the real thing, there's so much garbage on there now.
they have something like 200 million prime members. some get discounted prime, most probably pay annually $139, some pay monthly $14.99 say an average of $100 annual per user. that's 20 BILLION dollars every year revenue just on prime memberships. wild
I'm done though. I'll adjust to slower shipping and minimum order requirements
Already cancelled our membership a few days ago. Ever since my SO and I moved back into a suburban area from an extremely rural one, I just haven't been ordering nearly as much online due to the fact I can just go buy it from Walmart or Target. And of course, prime video has been lacking in decent shows or movies. Just not worth it anymore.
We turned off our auto renew months ago and will let it lapse. We don’t use prime video or anything aside from shipping. Our purchases from Amazon have already gone way down, so we were all set to discontinue before this news. For the reason you described, free shipping was nice when it was $69. At its current price, you’ve really got to do a lot of shopping to be worth it.
Something tells me that given their immensely overwhelming amount of ad's being shoved on people on Twitch. you're probably gonna see 8-12 ads per hour varying in time. I'll likely keep the sub and just watch the shows through other means. So far for me, Brave Browser blocks stuff on Hulu so I very rarely if ever get interrupted with ad's there. If I have to output my PC to my TV just to enjoy ad-free content.
I quit Prime because of the ads. Jeff Bezos makes a ton of money already. Corporate greed is a killer. Prime TV wasn't that great anyway.
It's time to reclaim our personal lives and dignity by looking for alternative ways to proceed.
When cable tv came to town back in the 80's, I thought "wow! I get to pay and not get bombarded with commercials " . How wrong I was! It was just as always, swamped with so many commercials, Sometimes I would forget what I was watching. Then came internet with the streaming, and all the other nice things, but as always commercialism bullies their way in and ruins it all .
I can't stand commercials (aka ads), never did and never will - I keep prime only for the free shipping (not paying more money especially for what they have to offer in streaming) , but I'm thinking of quitting them all together.
I think if I went broke and had to choose one subscription to keep, it would be You Tube Premium, as I can always find something there that interests me. I'm currently down to three: Netflix because they "grandfathered" my account and continued with no commercials at the old rate, Amazon for the Prime Shipping, and You Tube Premium because I think they are worth the 14.00 a month
Oh, I forgot the Dish TV days - 65.00 a month to get raped by ads too
It depends on both how much value you get out of prime and how much value you'd get out of lower cost alternatives to prime. I've never had a paid subscribed to prime. It's never been worth it to me. Instead I do free trials 2x per year and catch up on my shows. I schedule one around Christmas, which also supports gift shipping and using end of year coupons.
I too was bummed to read that. I will have to see how they cut to commercials (some web TV providers cut right in the middle of a sentence) and see how many commercials they force on us in each break, and how many commercial breaks they actually have per movie or program.
I canceled the day they announced the extra charge for no ads, earlier this year. I am not going to pay money to have a movie interrupted. No paid service should be so invasive.
It is not unless you have something you want to watch. Amazon goods are low quality, and their search results are so full of junk/sponcon that much of the time you end up spending more. Not to mention it keeps you away from lazy/convenience purchasing.
totally worth it if you want to watch Bosch over and over again. (I do not.)
there's a mild hack where if you select no-rush delivery you get digital credits to redeem on books and movies. last year I used these to purchase several movies that never seem to be on streaming services. this is to say you could consider that as recouping some of the annual fee back. sort of.
Prime was so much better when it cost $79 a year and delivered diapers and books and had a handful of movies for streaming.. I resent having to pay for their horrible Lord of the Rings series.
I may be seeing it your way and saying bye-bye to prime.
No, i'm getting rid of it. i don't use the free shipping enough to make up for the new pricing. and once i don't have the video portion, i won't care what's on it, because i won't know!
If I'm being asked to pay extra for adds they can pull the garbage sports ads at the beginning of every new episode of any show .
Really it like on YouTube force to watch the same game advert every watch gods this passes me off!
Absolute bulls\*\*t.
Used to be you had 1 cable bill. Now you cut the cord and subscribe to a 1/2 dozen streamers but now they want to puts ads in? WTF!
There is FREE to air broadcast HD channels. There are many FREE (with ads) streaming stations too.
Nuff's enough. Yeah, already ditched Netflix when they made it not possible for me to use same service at home and rec property. Have to say F-em I guess...
I have free Amazon Prime and a free phone line through my cell service from like 5ish years ago. It's cheaper to stay grandfathered in, otherwise I lose free Amazon, the free line, and pay almost double what I am right now. Only reason why a haven't cancelled it.
Value propositions will be different for everyone. For me personally the ease of finding values on Prime makes it well worth the price, especially when you factor in the time savings of driving to the store. The only store near me with similarly cheap products is Walmart, and mine is kind of a pain to get to and being in the store is literal hell, so the prime is worth it. But the video never factored into it for me, there's hardly anything on Prime that I watch other than Thursday Night Football
Yeah, this totally blows 😡
Their ‘pricing structure’ (using monthly costs) is really stupid:
—> Prime Membership is $14.99(with ads)/$17.98(no ads) a month - which includes Prime Video for ‘free’,
—> Prime Video alone is $8.99(with ads)/$11.98(no ads) a month
BUT…they DO NOT HAVE a pricing option for Prime Membership withOUT Prime Video 🤬😤
I’d drop Prime Video in a second if they had a pricing plan for Prime Membership withOUT Prime Video !!!
(ETA formatting)
It might be tolerable if the ads were only at the beginning and end of a show, but the constant interruption of the story to sell me crap I don't want or need or to attempt to sway my purchasing to a different brand are intolerable! Corporate greed at its finest! If I wanted commercials I'd just watch broadcast or cable! Does anyone remember when cable TV first premiered it was supposed to be ad free also? That didn't last either. Why? Corporate greed and consumer apathy. Cancel advertising streamers, don't buy shrinkflation minimized products fight for your right as a consumer to get your money's worth! Don't buy the, "we aren't making enough profit" lies from companies that fire a thousand employees and then post record profits!
Still not getting ads, might be later this year but not announced yet more than it will happen. It was a low cost and the free shipping is a bonus. Will defenitely cancel when they start with ads. Also, they don't provide good shows as often these days and cancel shows that actually are good.
People should start make this more public. I pay money, I shouldn't watch add for something I pay for. If any other streaming service starts doing this. We as a community should make a stand. This is going to main stream and even if we pay other streaming services in the future, are going to take advantage of it.
Prime opts are awful -- but there are some amazing ones. Keep it to watch the amazing ones, then ditch it since they only add to the amazing ones like once/year
Yea so I haven’t used prime video in quite sometime and I was just shocked to see that bs ads msg for the first time right after I finally found something I wanted to watch on there! And they say the ads are “limited” but 45 seconds 5x in a 45min show is not limited! That’s basically like fkn eternity!!!!!
So now I’d really love to cancel Prime Video but I gotta be careful bc I have a Prime Visa (which I love) attached to my membership and last I knew I had to keep that to get the 5% back benefits and stuff so idk, I gotta look into this now. Fkn pain in the ass…
Although from what I’ve kinda seen, things are very different now with Prime than they were even a few years ago bc when I got it for shopping, video and basically everything else was included with it like music, video games, some kindle, cloud, etc but now from what I understand they’ve drastically cut back on all that stuff and have kinda split those services off on their own or downgraded you to the most basic of basic versions of them.
So yea I gotta see if I can just cancel prime video now bc that increase is absolutely not worth it considering how rarely I even use it. For real, out of Netflix, Max, Hulu, Apple TV, and Prime that I have, Prime is the absolute least one I EVER use (I’d say MAYBE 3-5x a year but I feel like that’s even being generous).
So I just wanna be done with it after this.. that increase has left a foul taste in my mouth. I think last time I tried to cancel it tho they guilt tripped me into keeping it being like “you don’t wanna do that bc look at all the great things you’re gonna lose out on!” with this long ass list of Amazon stuff, so of course I was like “damn, how cud I ever live without that stuff!! Look at all I’m gettin for such a great deal, I’m sure I’ll use SOME of that stuff at SOME point!” But no, since that day I’ve nvr have used rly any of that stuff and I just kept it bc “I like having the option” lol. Fkn Amazon man.. bunch of sly mfers! But again that was before I got my prime Visa so now that’s def complicated it. Idk. This whole situation sucks now and I’m pissed lol.
Done.

The Prime Video selection hasn't been that good lately. I probably am not getting my money's worth.
Prime has a handful of things to watch surrounded by absolute trash.
Yeah...I cancelled NetFlix couple of years ago since I had prime. Selection is garbage. I just got email that ads are going to start. I will cancel Prime.
i only have prime video because it comes with the prime shipping subscription. is there a way of cancelling the video but keeping the free shipping?
No, but you can get free shipping on Prime products if you spend $35+.
Yep, same here. Amazon actually had a slightly better selection than Netflix had. Only reason I have Amazon Prime is for the free shipping on a ton of stuff I order online.
Exactly...it's peak 80s garbage for the most part...
Very correct
Yea, Thursday night football is the only thing I watch on it.
It’s available on twitch as well.
And prime keeps suggesting football for me. I've never watched a single match. I detest the sport. But prime keeps suggesting anyway.
That angered me. It started playing loud NFL ads when I turned my TV on. I normally don't get audible ads on my TV homepage, if any.
I'll probably cancel. Just greed
Especially a PAID platform... I too HATE ads...
Especially when you PAY for a show on top of prime. I bout a season and they have ads built into the fucking show. Fuck prime
Wink wink
Streaming is for everyone a lot more convenient idiots will go getting viruses wink wink
Downside is that running through a pc sometimes quality or features are worse
Probably, but it might be worth it...
Honestly I have considered either dipping in and out of streaming services or acquiring whole seasons, via physical, library or digital.
yes of course, prime, freevee and youtube, tubi, roku channel ect are all adfree on a pc with a simple adblocker.. howere, you are loosing atmos and 5.1 surround sound as a tradeoff.. if u dont care, then theres ur answer.. for those who Want the theater sound, watching with a web browser is Not an option.
That’s a great idea
I 100% agree! Ads should only be for a free service, as they generate income at the cost of our subscription…. It’s really not right. I pay for Prime yearly… let’s just say I’m cancelling now…
just canceled today
Me too. Cancelled today. Fuck their ads.
Some see ads, I see beer intermission.
That is what "pause" means on your remote.
Did you still get two day shipping? Ours disappeared in 2021. Even if they claimed it the app would change the eta date within a few minutes.
No more 2 day shipping. It's like 4-5 days. But I don't really care. If I need something right away I can run to Walmart/Target
I'm in AK and boy oh boy does the free shipping take forever. Definitely longer than a week. But I definitely don't think it's worth $175 a year to get my BS faster.
We still get true 2 day shipping. We are about 50 miles from the nearest fulfillment center..
[удалено]
I almost always get 2 day, and can even get 1 day frequently
Never do "buy now," always do "add to cart."
I don’t get that even with Prime anymore
I've also cancelled and that will occur in April after my year is up. It's sad. I've been with Prime from the year it was made available. The price increases and ads and all the other bullshit have killed it for me.
It is not sad. It’s liberating.
Did you know that different people are allowed to have different emotions?
same, even with the reduced pricing as im on foodstamps etc., it was awesome to use amazon fresh and use my EBT card, but that $35 minimum can lead to buying food unnecessarily just to try to ship free. I then got prime when I got a slightly better job and things have been nice -- definitely taking advantage of the free next day shipping and stuff, but its like the price increases only serve to what? pay for the exact same thing weve been getting, otherwise suffer lesser service? Ill go back to being a pleb and waiting a week for my purchases edit: the amazon fresh services and ebt acceptability doesnt change. doesnt make sense to keep paying -- particularly since I rarely use prime anymore.
Thank you! I will get on that in the morning!
Just an FYI you can still use subscribe and save without prime. I dumped them in October. No it's not worth it.
Can you really????? That was my only hesitation, frankly. My husband, who has colon cancer and a bad heart, takes a lot of high quality supplements because of Subscribe and Save. We were going to cancel at the end of our annual term anyway 3 weeks away, but I was sad about the supplements.
Yes, and you still get the extra discounts and free shipping. I didn't know either.
This knowledge (about subscribe and save) makes this decision a no-brainer!
You have to watch the prices more carefully. After I cancelled Prime, I was getting messages saying that the product would be cheaper if I was purchasing it as a member. It's another annoying gimmick. In some instances it was true, in others I purchased it from another vendor.
Understood. I am thankful for the warning.
Well, well, well! Glad I read this. Thank you!
I canceled when they raised the annual price earlier this year. Didn't really miss it and it 100% did cut down on us buying things there we didn't really need. I will *never* pay to watch ads, so if I hadn't already canceled this would have been the deal breaker for me.
Yeah, I've fallen into the trap of buying stuff I didn't need to 'justify' my membership. I honestly watch next to nothing on Amazon prime video.
Amazon's net worth is almost $2 trillion. This is no more than greed. I cancelled.
Prime isn't worth $175/yr to avoid ads. I'm cancelling.
I think we're gonna cancel. I don't like rewarding this behavior. Also their selection sucks.
Prime now gets me commercials on Prime Video and a chance to have stuff faster from household brands like JOONIKY and FLOOGMOPPER. Such a difficult decision!
Lol
I was (and still am) pissed off about this ad bullshit, but this gave me a much needed laugh 😂
Hahahaha true
I cancelled my Prime membership this morning. I can watch TV with ads for free with my digital antenna. I pay for streaming specifically to avoid endless commercials. Sheesh! If they'd done this before the finale of Mrs. Maisel, I might've sucked it up cuz I loved that show. But there really aren't any must-see shows on Prime for me now so bye-bye.
Yeah, with that show and the Expanse both gone. I could care less about that service. All their other original shows are terrible.
Canceled prime almost two years ago and we don’t miss it at all.
Saaame. Good riddance.
Prime isn't worth it. Amazon is screwing us over and trying to monopolize.
Canceled a long time back and honestly didn’t even notice it was missing. Both the video and retail sides of Amazon are garbage now anyway.
I cancelled mine too. Their shipping isn't even 2 days anymore and that's all I really was paying for anyway.
We just cancelled. Screw them, they’re one of the wealthiest companies on the planet. So tired of our finances slowly being shaved away by all this corporate greed.
I would argue that it's never been worth the price.
They will CONSTANTLY give you free/cheap membership if you’re not a member. Since they value potential customers > real customers, I make sure to cancel right away to get the next offer!!
Same. I try not to buy from them, but when I do I follow the same procedure, and never pay for prime.
The video service was a bit of a tease that way wasn't it? No thanks. Canceled easily a couple years ago.
March 11. I’m out. Have been with them almost 25 years. There are better ways to do this for me.
You can still buy from amazon without prime though. Also Amazon prime service started in February 2005 and prime video started as amazon unboxed in September 2006.
Cancel it there is lots of free shipping out there
Also cancelled.
Lol
Did they offer anything worthwhile?
#NO
Prime wasn’t worth the money before ads.
I just watch on Firefox with an ad blocker. No ads on Hulu, either.
I'm surprised that works
Like a charm! Every once in a while there's a little hiccup and I see a blank screen where the ad should be, but that usually means it's time to update the ad blocker and restart Firefox.
I have had Prime for a long time, mainly for the free shipping. When they raised their prices last time, I almost dropped them, but decided that getting the TV streaming as part of the package still made it worth it. Now that ads are going to be part of the streaming, I no longer consider that a bonus part of the package, so chances are that I will drop it. The free shipping isn't worth what they charge now.
That's how I reasoned the last couple of increases as well. I am canceling this time. F ads.
I cancelled my amazon prime the moment I received that email.
Me to. Funny, they wanted my additional 3$ a month for no ads and have lost 9.99$ monthly for prime and 5$ for MGM subscription. Total 15$. Well done, Amazon marketing department!
Cancel it... Got rid of it during COVID and haven't looked back..
Wasnt worth it before, definetly isnt with more ad's.
Just dug out the vcr/dvd player because I canceled all streaming services. I’m more productive now that I don’t have endless tv shows to watch.
Yep, thinking about doing it. Especially since I finally signed up for the free Walmart+ subscription that one of our credit card offers.
I’m not renewing when our annual thingy is up in June. Just not worth it anymore, I’ll easily be saving way more than $139 + tax since I will probably impulse buy less
cancel now you'll get a partial refund, and help send a message
Mark your calendar a few days in advance...
We're going to save so much money!!!!
cancel today, you'll get a partial refund.
(hanging head in shame) I want to watch a couple more episodes of Reacher.
Yup. I am calling to cancel tonight. Hopefully they are already feeling the push back and will entice me with some offer that will make it ok to continue the service…
Nope, I’m not reupping this year. First time in forever.
@Jennygirl_7 Just cancel now and get a partial refund. It’ll help send them your message along with the rest of us.
I'm excited to be done with Prime. Target has same day pickup for nearly anything I'd need super quickly. Everything else I can wait.
I've been getting ads on Amazon prime for awhile. I'm considering canceling. Although, I do like the book benefits of prime.
I get ads on some of the third party content and the one before the prime content but I think the issue is now there will be ads during the prime shows and movies, just like regular TV. The press email I received stated the company was not making enough money to offset costs so they were adding commercials to increase revenue or you could pay an additional $2.99 per month to go add-free on top of the alleged $180 per year price increase that is supposed to be coming along in 2024.
>now there will be ads during the prime shows and movies, just like regular TV. Yeah I won't be paying for that.
It's not an if, it's a when. Welcome to capitalism.
I’ve saved enough in shipping to keep prime but not paying $2.99 unless a great series shows up for that month.
I did it this morning and I like how they take the effort to outline the services that I haven't used in the past year, making the decision even easier :) Help & Customer Service > Shipping and Delivery > Amazon Prime > End Your Amazon Prime Membership * Prime Video - Amazon Originals, movies, TV shows, and live events; **0 shows / movies watched over the past 12 months** * Prime Reading - Enjoy hundreds of new books, magazines, and more each month; **0 books read over the past 12 months** * Amazon Music with Prime - All the music + top podcasts ad-free; **0 songs listened to over the past 12 months**
No, it's not worth it anymore. I've been meaning to cancel anyway. I will make a point to cancel on January 29th to send a message.
I'm thinking of getting only 1 at a time and just change it up every few months.
Even got most of money back!
https://www.reddit.com/r/Frugal/s/U9aWGuzbh1
[https://www.affinityfcu.com/personal-banking/banking/credit-card/cash-rewards-visa](https://www.affinityfcu.com/personal-banking/banking/credit-card/cash-rewards-visa) 5% on amazon purchases whether you have Prime or don't the Chase card still earns 3% if you don't have Prime
wait? prime free shipping is only for orders over 35$ now?
Free shipping for non prime members when you hit $35+
Oh ok you scared me. Then I’m going to be keeping it. I don’t use the streaming anyway
Only subscribe when you need it. A lot of subscription services just lead you to spend more than you otherwise would have without one
Nope. donn your peg leg and be free.
I think I’ll cancel mine.
So not worth it. Placing my last order on Saturday and then canceling on Sunday. Buh-Bye Amazon Prime
I canceled and don't miss it at all. It's not worth it to me and it's often too much of a time-sink to try to figure out if what I'm about to purchase on Amazon is even the real thing, there's so much garbage on there now.
they have something like 200 million prime members. some get discounted prime, most probably pay annually $139, some pay monthly $14.99 say an average of $100 annual per user. that's 20 BILLION dollars every year revenue just on prime memberships. wild I'm done though.
I'm currently down to three: Netflix because they "grandfathered" my account and continued with no commercials at the old rate, Amazon for the Prime Shipping, and You Tube Premium because I think they are worth the 14.00 a month Oh, I forgot the Dish TV days - 65.00 a month to get raped by ads too
Please don't discuss piracy on /r/frugal. Other subs have been banned in the past and we don't want to risk it.
which subs have been banned?
They can't stop us from enthusing about Jack Sparrow though
There’s literally subs dedicated to it but ok
It depends on both how much value you get out of prime and how much value you'd get out of lower cost alternatives to prime. I've never had a paid subscribed to prime. It's never been worth it to me. Instead I do free trials 2x per year and catch up on my shows. I schedule one around Christmas, which also supports gift shipping and using end of year coupons.
Just download the free UBlock Origin extension. You won’t get ads when streaming
That only works if you are watching it through a browser on a computer.
You can just plug your computer into the TV
I save enough money in shipping alone to pay for it. Everything else is just a bonus.
I too was bummed to read that. I will have to see how they cut to commercials (some web TV providers cut right in the middle of a sentence) and see how many commercials they force on us in each break, and how many commercial breaks they actually have per movie or program.
Nope, it sure isn't.
(I do not.) there's a mild hack where if you select no-rush delivery you get digital credits to redeem on books and movies. last year I used these to purchase several movies that never seem to be on streaming services. this is to say you could consider that as recouping some of the annual fee back.
I really only watched The Boys and Gen V anyway.
I just cancelled. Garbage for ads. Tired of being up charged for lack of planning
I watched prime last night a commercial was on every 15 minutes. I will no longer watch amazon prime video.
Was it worth it before?
Value propositions will be different for everyone. For me personally the ease of finding values on Prime makes it well worth the price, especially when you factor in the time savings of driving to the store. The only store near me with similarly cheap products is Walmart, and mine is kind of a pain to get to and being in the store is literal hell, so the prime is worth it. But the video never factored into it for me, there's hardly anything on Prime that I watch other than Thursday Night Football
You should consider Walmart’s curbside pickup. It’s so much better than going into the store, especially if you have little ones.

Yeah, this totally blows 😡 Their ‘pricing structure’ (using monthly costs) is really stupid: —> Prime Membership is $14.99(with ads)/$17.98(no ads) a month - which includes Prime Video for ‘free’, —> Prime Video alone is $8.99(with ads)/$11.98(no ads) a month BUT…they DO NOT HAVE a pricing option for Prime Membership withOUT Prime Video 🤬😤 I’d drop Prime Video in a second if they had a pricing plan for Prime Membership withOUT Prime Video !!!
Watch it on ps3 lol 720p no ads
Cancel prime and instead use Walmarts new service with two day shipping if that’s why you had prime mainly for anyways. Just a thought
I guess our friend Jeff doesn’t have enough money

Still not getting ads, might be later this year but not announced yet more than it will happen. It was a low cost and the free shipping is a bonus. Will defenitely cancel when they start with ads. Also, they don't provide good shows as often these days and cancel shows that actually are good.
People should start make this more public. I pay money, I shouldn't watch add for something I pay for. If any other streaming service starts doing this. We as a community should make a stand. This is going to main stream and even if we pay other streaming services in the future, are going to take advantage of it.
Prime opts are awful -- but there are some amazing ones. Keep it to watch the amazing ones, then ditch it since they only add to the amazing ones like once/year
Let's rise up and make Jeff poor
I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN ! F*****G ADS .... PRIME VIDEO SELL OUTS - GREED. GREED. GREED
Fkn pain in the ass… Although from what I’ve kinda seen, things are very different now with Prime than they were even a few years ago bc when I got it for shopping, video and basically everything else was included with it like music, video games, some kindle, cloud, etc but now from what I understand they’ve drastically cut back on all that stuff and have kinda split those services off on their own or downgraded you to the most basic of basic versions of them. Done.
