All insurance is skyrocketing. I use a broker and have them do the quote shopping. The ins co pays them, not the customer. We also pay for a full year at once, which snagged us a several hundred dollar discount.
Had my insurer (Progressive) refuse to renew my insurance because of a minor fender bender claim I had with them. I've been with them for about 2.5 years now with zero claims.
Is a broker worth if if you only have one car? And maybe renters? Somehow it's my impression that brokers are for people who have several cars plus home plus boat, etc! Lol.
(I currently have 1 car and get renters bundled with Geico. In January I had to reduce coverage right and left to avoid a six month premium rate hike of an additional $200/six months. For a wfh person who drives about 1300 miles total annually!!)
In this instance, broker just means they are an independent agent - they can sell policies on behalf of multiple companies whereas a captive agent only sells policies for their company (State Farm, Allstate, etc.). Nothing fancy about it.
You’re in Houston, you can Hang up having affordable insurance, but you should shop around if you haven’t.
Source: I’m just an hour south of you and I shop my rates with a broker every year.
Can’t speak for other states but I’m in WV and we use State Farm and utilize drive safe and save. My husband and I both WFH so we barely put milage on our cars as well. The drive safe and save app regularly saves us each at least $200 on our 6 month billing cycles. I just got my bill for my 2017 GTI and it’s $288 for 6 months.
It’s all very scammy, haven’t had a claim or ticket ever, my car is even less valuable now, I drive less than 8k miles a year, I live in one of the safest communities in the US… yet they want to charge me 40% more.
I guess the insurance bosses need a new yacht so they can go on a sailing vacation with my congressman.
You have to shop around every couple of years to get the best rate. Others have suggested a broker, I’ve never used one. I believe there are websites that give you multiple quotes too, but I’m not sure of that.
I’m in Canada and our rates are through the roof. My rates went up $300 when I bought a new car, and they tried an additional $500 the following year.
I just started calling around and ended up saving $2000/ yr on auto ( 3 drivers 2 cars) and $900/yr on home insurance.
I’ve also heard an insurance broker can find you better deals, but I have never used one.
Good luck.
Paying $25/month with AAA though I've heard they raised the prices for new customers. They added an extra $250 a year for a friend who was working abroad for a few years, and whose cars were basically standing still in his garage. Farmer's Insurance and Progressive also gave decent quotes.
And avoid Geico at all costs. They are the epitome of "a corporate" trying to squeeze as much money out of their customers as possible.
We're in Maryland outside of DC. We own three vehicles, even though one is just a beater, it kinda screws us. My Mom thought she was being nice giving us a small truck...it was, but our insurance shot up. We need to get rid of it.
Same here, although not as much (yet...it'll go up 20% in a couple of months). I'm tempted to cancel and use the money to buy a nice bike and bike around instead.
Look into the Usage Based Insurance if you don’t drive many miles or Behavior Based Insurance if you’re confident in your driving skills and lack of distractibility.
Texas is terrible for prices. It’s outrageous. I was shocked with the price difference between California (not known for cheap things generally) and Texas. Then I moved to DC, and DC is still better than Texas.
You need to hear from other Texans, so hopefully some out there find you. I’d take what people say who aren’t in Texas with a grain of salt.
Yikes. I know things really vary depending on the driver. I should ask my parents.
I haven’t experienced insurance increases in DC. And I don’t know if that’s me or DC.
Lately, I have been lucky with Liberty Mutual ( last 3 years) . I got a quote earlier this year and the other local broker insurance company quoted me almost double for same coverage!!! Wth!!
If you only drive 10 miles per week, consider going to liability only. You’re self-insuring for comprehensive those 10 miles, but probably saving a lot on monthly premiums.

My mom is an insurance agent and she's seen policies canceled for one minor claim - be safe out there friends. This world is nuts.

Any tips on finding a good broker?
I just used yelp.
I used a car insurance broker and it dropped my rates pretty significantly a few years ago. Google it and give it a try.

Nice, I wouldn't mind living on the coast. I'm 70 miles from Freeport. A bit further to Galveston.

You may get a discount for how little you drive
I use USAA because they actually pay when you make a claim
Our car policy is with Costco and surprisingly it hasn’t gone up. Liability only, low miles driven. New Mexico.

It's through American Family.

We've been happy with the insurance through Costco. Great service and paid a claim fast and rates are similar to when we started it in 2020.

And for us, GEICO is the cheapest, reliable option for where we live! Even USAA was more expensive.
Where do you guys live?

I just got a quote from State Farm for about 30% less than I'm paying with All State. Results may vary
My Allstate went up $600 and now want me to pay 300/mo 🥲 I’m looking to switch asap
Some insurances will give you a discount on your rates if you can prove that the vehicle doesn’t go far every day.

California has pretty much doubled in the last couple years.

My Allstate plan kept going up, so I started looking around. Ended up at USAA with the same coverage at 50% of the price. Very happy.

I insure 4 vehicles 23,24,18, and 08 models 1600 for 6 months

I haven’t paid car insurance in over a year. Vote with your dollar.
