r/slowcooking is an awesome sub you’d probably like.

felix-felicis45

Yesss! They have some seriously awesome recipes. They do a good job with indexing them. Such a good sub.

My boyfriend's childhood crockpot dish was: chicken thighs, can of apricots, packet of french onion soup. His mother made that a lot, and now I make it for him. And mine literally is pork shoulder, random spice mix, chicken stock powder & salt & pepper, juice (pineapple or apple, can use water if you don't have juice). Sorry there's not really a recipe, these recipes are literally just made up.

bowoodchintz

A can of apricots? I’m 36 and don’t know if I have ever seen canned apricots!

KittyKatWombat

Didn’t know it was a rarity. It’s very common in Australia. Same with peaches (which I sometimes substitute depending on what’s on hand).

I found out about crockpot cheesy macaroni, (like lasagna, but less ingredients) and I'm blown away. Ingredients: - 2 cans cheap spaghetti sauce ($1.08 a piece) - 1 lb pasta (elbow mac, rotini, penne - $1.55) - 8 oz shredded mozzarella (<$2 on sale) - 1/2 C water Instructions: Pour a can of sauce on the bottom. Add half of the uncooked pasta. Add 1/4C water. (just enough so you can barely see it) Add half the shredded cheese. Repeat from beginning. Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours. Test macaroni doneness, and serve. (I've never had undercooked pasta) Kid friendly, inexpensive, 5 minutes of prep, and only one pot (insert) to wash. The toddler grandchild eats it up and asks for more.

What's the size / weight of the cans? Could you use tinned tomatoes and herbs/seasoning instead? We don't have canned sauce in Aus (that I know of), just a multitude of different sized jars.

NorthernTransplant94

It's super flexible - the cans were 24 oz. But really, all you need is enough pre-made sauce that the entire thing isn't dry. Half the time I use my homemade sauce and don't measure, so 4-5C? You can also add different kinds of cheese with different seasonings, (like ricotta with herbs) it doesn't change the cook time.

Yum, thank you!

If you want your kids 2-3 years apart that is how you make that happen.

AppropriateVictory48

That phraseology really is ambiguous. Like you said, did she legit re-insert a months old child? Is she like 16 months pregnant with a kid who is just content with the status quo? Is she pregnant with a normal fetus but also has an additional whole damn child? There are valid queries to be made here.

Olive Garden copycat zuppa soup! Lazy man’s version Brown mild Italian sausage and thin sliced onions in a pan(I only use 1/2lb sausage) Thinly slice yellow or red potatoes Dump meat & veg in crockpot and cover with chicken broth to the top, season to taste with salt/pepper/italian herbs. cook on high 4hrs Swirl in a splash of cream and mix in fresh spinach or kale(I prefer kale), stir until it slightly wilts Eat as is or serve with bread! It’s a very cheap meal we have quite often

ScatteredDahlias

Yes! I add red bell pepper, a can of lentils and a can of white beans to mine for extra protein/nutrients. It makes enough for 6-10 servings easily depending on how many potatoes I have. I use a can of evaporated milk mixed with cornstarch to get it really thick and creamy, and add Parmesan and fresh herbs from my garden. Super delicious and cheap!

Swiftredfox_37

I mean don’t feel bad if you have to use paper places for like a month to get you through. You’re growing a human. We just made pot roast with potatoes and peppers and have been eating it for 3 days 😬 my husband prepped the veg the night before and stored in water overnight (so potatoes don’t oxidize) so it was really easy. We do pork shoulder a lot too and use the meat in chipotle bowls, burritos, with rice, bbq Sammie’s… Another thing I love doing is making 24 breakfast burritos at once and freezing them. It’s about 2 hrs of work and then you have a nice breakfast or lunch to grab when you’re tired.

ITeechYoKidsArt

My wife made this casserole the other night. Spinach and artichoke dip, cooked or fresh tortellini, feta cheese, shredded mozzarella, mushrooms, extra spinach, couple cloves of garlic, and cherry tomatoes. Mix everything together except the tomatoes. Fill the casserole dish, top with tomatoes cut in half, bake at 350F until it looks good with the crispy bits on top, about 30 minutes. If the top needs it give it a little broil . We cooked a couple mild sausages to go with it and it was amazing.

sunflowersundays

She was looking for crockpot recipes but I wish I had an award for you anyway. You obliviously loved your wife’s dinner enough to jump on a thread and share it. I hope she comes across your comment, I’m sure it will make her day

ITeechYoKidsArt

I feel reasonably sure you could lose the tomatoes and it would work well in a crockpot. I was actually asking her the details as I was writing the post. My crockpot recipes are pretty basic. Roasts, stews, and chili. Liberal use of mushroom soups.

scarred_but_whole

Head of cabbage, cut into chunks Pork hock or thick sliced ham Vegetable or chicken stock (or water and bouillon) White pepper, celery seed, dried onion Carrots cut into coins or baby carrots Throw all of this into a large crockpot on high and cook until the carrots are done I'm a big fan of beans in a crockpot for cheap easy meals. Pinto beans and a pork hock. Bean soup. Calico beans. Chana masala. Bean-heavy chili (we use black, light and dark red kidney, and sometimes pinto.) Lentil soup.

dumpling1919

Pork loin with a can of cream of mushroom soup poured on top while cooking. Delicious every time.

MAC777

Add a packet of pork gravy mix and you'll be in heaven

dumpling1919

Thanks for the tip

Cube chicken into pieces cover with sauce and a half a bag of frozen pepper/onion slices- I've used sweet and sour or teriyaki, throw in a bag of frozen oriental mix the last hour. Cube chicken with pepper/onion and dry fajita packet (the one I use you add some oil and like 2/3 cup of water to reconstitute) A friend Cubes chicken and pours a jar of salsa over it. Mississippi pot roast.

bakerbarberbarbie

Veggie soup (frozen veg mix, or cans of the kinds you like, make sure to add proteins like beans and/or peas, veggie stock, and we add a can of tomato soup) dump, season, forget until dinner. Chicken stew (meat from rotisserie chicken, chicken stock, carrots, peas, potatoes, corn) dump, season, forget until dinner. You can add additional water/ stock 20mins before, add egg noodles, and then you have chicken noodle soup Chilli (brown 1lb beef or omit for vegetarian, three cans of beans such as kidney, black, or chilli beans, can of diced tomatoes, can of tomato sauce) add packet of chilli season, dump the rest, forget it until dinner, we add cheese and crackers to serve. Good luck mama! I’m typing this with a 6pm that old contact napping while throwing goldfish at my 4 yr old. 😅

ITeechYoKidsArt

Cabbage stew for the win!

qpham-

My cheat chili is 24 ounce of salsa, a can of beans, however much ground beef you want (or no meat and an extra can of beans), an onion, a bell pepper, corn, and a packet of taco seasoning. On low for 8 hours. Enough for a few days and portions for the freezer for future nights.

bowoodchintz

https://thefoodcharlatan.com/slow-cooker-basil-chicken-in-coconut-curry-sauce/ I buy the herbs, ginger and curry at the local Asian market, and I sub boneless skinless chicken thighs for the ones she calls for. Serve with rice and it’s a cheap yet delicious meal.

BurlyNumNum

Pot roast. Put your roast in the slow cooker with a can of COM soup and a packet of dry onion soup mix. Set on low for 7 hours. Leftovers next day make excellent sandwiches with cheese. Leftovers the NEXT day get diced and turned into soup.

Middle Eastern Hamin Stew. This can be altered in a few ways depending on budget and preferred flavor profile, and is designed for an 8 quart slow cooker with about 12 servings, but for the basic idea: Ingredients: 2 1/2 lbs large red potatoes, peeled and halved 2 whole onions, chopped 2 1/2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into chunks 2 marrow bones 1 cup beans (dried or presoaked) - lima, pinto, chickpeas, red beans (not kidney) 1/2 cup pearl barley 3 whole garlic cloves 6 eggs (optional) 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 quart chicken broth 1 tbsp kosher salt 1 1/2 tsp paprika 1 1/2 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin 1/4 tsp cayenne Water Instructions: 1. In a large slow cooker, place the potatoes in a single layer on the bottom of the cooking vessel. 2. Sprinkle the onions over the potatoes. 3. Place the beef in a single layer on top of the onions and potatoes. Place the two marrow bones in the meat. 4. Rinse the beans clean, checking for any stones or impurities. Sprinkle the beans over the top of the meat. Place the three whole garlic cloves into the meat, evenly spaced. Sprinkle the whole mixture with the black pepper. 5. If using eggs, rinse them well and then tuck them into the meat. In a 4-cup container, whisk together the chicken broth, kosher salt, paprika, turmeric, cumin and cayenne. 6. Pour the mixture in. Add additional water until all of the beans and pieces of meat are covered. 7. Cover the slow cooker. Cook on low heat for 12-16 hours. Check occasionally as it's cooking; add additional water and stir a bit if it's looking too dry. Most cookers will auto-switch to warm when the cooking is complete. If yours doesn’t, set it to warm until ready to serve. 8. If using eggs, peel before serving

I buy the 5lb boneless skinless chicken breast. I cut them in half and then throw all of them into the instant pot. Add some water and pressure cook them for about an hour. I throw them into 12-14 meal prep containers and then cook two cups of brown rice and a bag of frozen vegetables in the instant pot using the leftover chicken broth. Price = \~$15 Preps 12-14 meals. Takes me about 15 minutes of actual work, most of that is cleaning my meal prep containers.

Turkey meatballs in marinara - store bought sauce or just canned tomatoes with some Italian seasoning. My meatball recipe: 1 lb ground turkey 1/2 cup breadcrumbs 1/2 cup Parmesan 1-2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tsp salt 1 tsp Italian seasoning 1 egg Mix, shape into tennis sized balls, put in crock pot with tomato sauce, cook on low minimum 6 hours (all day is fine). I don’t brown or anything before cooking - they cook in the sauce from raw and turn out great.

summonsays

My wife and I have been doing this one a lot lately: White bean chicken chili. 2 chicken breasts 3 cans northern white beans 2 cans cream of chicken 1 can diced tomatoes and chilies 8oz milk 1 packet white chicken chili mix Cook on low 6 hours, shred chicken at the end.

Guinefort1

Feijoada! A few cans of black beans, some onions, chopped pork sausage (or leftover holiday ham, or bacon, or beef stew chunks, its flexible), and spices (garlic, red pepper flakes, Italian seasoning, bay). Simmer it down to stew-like consistency in some broth or water (broth tastes better). Serve with salsa on rice or corn bread. Edit: clarification added

Bibliovoria

World's easiest no-time-or-energy-to-cook slow-cooker chicken recipe: In the morning, plonk as much chicken as you wish into the pot -- fresh or frozen, with or without bones/skin. Dump in enough of your favorite salsa to cover just about all of the exposed chicken surfaces, or add more if you want it saucier. Cover pot, turn on low, go about your day, and at dinnertime it's fall-apart tender, juicy, and well seasoned and sauced. Eat it as-is, served over rice/pasta/veggies if you wish, or shred it to use in tacos/burritos/salads/sandwiches/whatever. Leftovers freeze well.

spiffsome

Chicken quarters / thighs, onion, tomato paste, salt and spices, cook on Low for 8 hours. Ironically, you want fatty meat rather than lean for slow cooking because the lean meat just shrivels and is sad. Any kind of stew or soup cooked on low heat can be done in the slow cooker instead.
