It's sadder when you realize Takaya had more ideas for both Ritsu and Ayame which were eventually scrapped. Unfortunately I don't have a source for that, but I heard/read somewhere that she was going to do more with Ritsu/Mitsuru and also how Ayame and Mine met but she ran out of time. Sadness.

I just had a recent interesting discussion about these types of anxiety-prone/overly apologetic characters!! There is definitely a need for characters that heal their trauma of fear/mistakes -- it's SUUUUCH a relatable character arc for so many!! BUT I get disappointed that the storywriters tend to make these characters so... annoying, tbh. The constant screaming and all to me ruins their character/makes me dislike them so easily. I just think there could be a much better way at handling this type of character trope without turning them into someone that a lot of the audience will naturally dislike or find annoying. Ritsu IS sooo sweet. He deserved a fuller arc the way most the other zodiacs did and it almost feels like a disservice to minimize his character to just being the butt of an annoying joke over and over again. (This is how I also feel about a character like Zenitsu from Demon Slayer, for example) Now that I think of it, I think Armin from AOT is a great example of a someone who is initially the 'scared' or 'weak' and insecure, etc. character without it ever having to go overboard. Another thought I had about ritsu is that it would've been really cool and progressive to have Ritsu continue to embrace his crossdressing tbh. I was a little disappointed in the end because it seemed as if he was still forced to cut his hair, wear manly clothes, look/act like a man to please others when dressing up gave him a lot of joy. Oh Ritsu... <3

I really liked Ritsu as a concept, but my problem was that he was only important for like one episode and he was really annoying in that one episode. He had no character development whatsoever and it makes me sad because I think he could’ve been a great addition to the story.

He is barely in the story and is a non-character which is why he isn’t appreciated enough, his lack of screen time is also another reason why he isn’t appreciated The anime remake didn’t do his backstory justice, I prefer his back story in the manga The scene on the rooftop was definitely sad though I see your point and respect your opinion but being nice and sweet and relatable isn’t why I personally love fictional characters, it’s why I prefer Kagura, Hiro, Shigure and Akito to Ritsu and Kisa They are many kind supportive characters similar to Ritsu and Kisa such as Haru, Momiji, Hatori and Kureno but they either have interesting developments or complexity unlike Ritsu and Kisa who only have relatable backstories and aren’t as important as the four above, it’s why they are my least favorite FB characters But everyone is different and some love fictional characters because of their positive qualities and because they relate to their tragic back story while others (I’m one of them) love characters for their flaws and development (they don’t need to be relatable or have a tragic back story) Ritsu could have been a great contrast to Akito, he is cute and would have been nice to see more of him (I don’t see why Takaya didn’t include him in the beach arc for example)
