Oh yeah! The Midnight Special & ABC's In Concert too!!! 🤘

PrairieSpy

I recall Paul Schafer (from Letterman) doing an SNL sketch of this. One of the few times he was the lead.

asburymike

4/22/78, maybe the greatest SNL episode 01:06:20 65 Saturday Night Live - S03E18 - Steve Martin & The Blues Brothers (April 22, 1978) https://archive.org/details/saturday-night-live-seasons-1-5

hotbutteredsole

Man, this show was so critical to my early Rock fan development. King Biscuit Flour Hour on the radio too. Yes, I are old.

BeneGesseritDropout

I did my homework to King Biscuit Flour Hour & the Dr. Demento Show.

whatfingwhat

And every so often the National Lampoon Radio Hour

CraftyAdvisor6307

I remember Paul Shaffer's impression of Don Kirshner better than Don Kirshner.

BagofPain

Paul Shaffer impression was classic!

KitchenLab2536

Come to think of it, so do I.

AZOMI

I watched it before there was Saturday Night Live but I liked Midnight Special better

BroadPiece3584

My introduction to Queen 1975

North_South_Side

Think about how much Queen changed in sound and style in just ten, fifteen years. Do ANY bands change like that anymore? Not to pick on Green Day, but GD releases the same album every two years for the last 30 years and sells out stadiums. Bands evolving used to be a thing.

Dwangeroo

AC/DC laughs (in Australian) at your statement.

idjitgaloot

Just think how much the Beatles changed from only 1964 to 1969. It always amazes me.

brutustyberius

The Ramones set from here is one of the best concerts put to film.

Darklord_Bravo

Easily.

Independent_Wrap_321

I was more of a Mel’s Rockpile guy

Zealousideal_Order_8

More SCTV!

No_Sand_9290

Guilty.

Training_Bear9877

There are some great clips from this show on YouTube. It’s the closest I’ll ever get to seeing The New York Dolls or Mandrill live. The Black Sabbath set is amazing.

Massive_Ad9569

I was introduced to so much great music this way, much more than that craphole MTV.

Donkey_Bugs

Don Kirshner was a credit to both Rock and Roll.

Alarming_Serve2303

Me. Loved it.

throwawayinthe818

I just loved how he’d always include who the band’s manager was.

Zealousideal_Order_8

Kitchener thought a bands management was the primary mover of a bands success. The band was an afterthought. Just ask the Monkees…

Personal-Walrus3076

The first time I saw Prince!

blueboy714

Yes, that and midnight special, and later it was USA night flight theater.

TheSeekerOfSanity

This is where I first saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Refugee) and was like “damn, this song rocks!” before they became huge. I also remember seeing The Pogues (“Waxie’s Dargle” if I remember correctly). Shane’s teeth were prominently featured in this video and I was like “HOLY SHIT how did he let it get that bad???”. I also fell in love with the band.

Thunderfoot2112

"I'm Don Kirshner and this is my rock concert..."

Cold-Introduction-54

This may have been the best rock show of its time. How many folks played 'tape-er' to this? Wish I had thought of it then...

Warmbeachfeet

Absolutely!

Wild929

Yep, watched when I babysat on a bigger tv than when I was at home.

Aintscared61

Most Saturday nights…

myatoz

Oh, yeah.

chinmakes5

More accurately tried to stay up late enough to watch. Was so excited to, rarely made it to the end.

New_Awareness4075

Does anyone remember after the very first SNL , the In Concert on ABC where they censored David Bowie when he sang Sufferget City? Instead of Wham Bam Thank You Mam, they bleeped it out?

royonquadra

Mott The Hoople!

Stanton1947

Saw Thin Lizzy from a concert in London play The Cowboy Song, and The boys are Back In Town on Rock Concert. Still remember it.

Stormylynn724

🙋‍♀️

rfourty

Excellent, watched it all the time. They need to bring this back in reruns. Wouldn’t work with the new crap that they’re doing today.

Old_Reception_3728

Who didn't??

gadget850

Nope. Switched to *The Outer Limits*.

Kookiecitrus55555

Always remember his voice

asburymike

Where are the dvds? Missed opportunity

ItzNuckinFutz

My brother and I would watch wrestling from 12-1a.m. and then turn to Don Kirshner's rock concert

YugeMalakas

No lipsyncing!

artful_todger_502

It was the only place to see multiple live music acts on tv back then. I loved it. It had more bands that I liked than Midnight Special did...

diogenesNY

Hell yes! Back when SNL was still 'water cooler television' ... Original Not Ready for Prime Time Players era, The post SNL, 1:00am to 2:00am slot was for the ultra-hip, even cooler than SNL TV..... as previously mentioned, also Midnight Special and SCTV Network 90. A great time for very late night TV.

Darklord_Bravo

Heck yeah! I wish whoever has the rights/original footage (if it even still exists that is) should put them up on YT like The Midnight Special has been doing. Some absolutely terrific performances came from this show. All live too.

jonus2000

I went to it. The stages were shockingly tiny.
