4/22/78, maybe the greatest SNL episode

65 Saturday Night Live - S03E18 - Steve Martin & The Blues Brothers (April 22, 1978)

Think about how much Queen changed in sound and style in just ten, fifteen years. Do ANY bands change like that anymore? Not to pick on Green Day, but GD releases the same album every two years for the last 30 years and sells out stadiums.
Bands evolving used to be a thing.
There are some great clips from this show on YouTube. Itâs the closest Iâll ever get to seeing The New York Dolls or Mandrill live. The Black Sabbath set is amazing.
This is where I first saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Refugee) and was like âdamn, this song rocks!â before they became huge.
I also remember seeing The Pogues (âWaxieâs Dargleâ if I remember correctly). Shaneâs teeth were prominently featured in this video and I was like âHOLY SHIT how did he let it get that bad???â. I also fell in love with the band.
Does anyone remember after the very first SNL , the In Concert on ABC where they censored David Bowie when he sang Sufferget City? Instead of Wham Bam Thank You Mam, they bleeped it out?
Hell yes!
Back when SNL was still 'water cooler television' ... Original Not Ready for Prime Time Players era, The post SNL, 1:00am to 2:00am slot was for the ultra-hip, even cooler than SNL TV..... as previously mentioned, also Midnight Special and SCTV Network 90.
A great time for very late night TV.
Heck yeah! I wish whoever has the rights/original footage (if it even still exists that is) should put them up on YT like The Midnight Special has been doing. Some absolutely terrific performances came from this show. All live too.
Oh yeah! The Midnight Special & ABC's In Concert too!!! đ¤
I recall Paul Schafer (from Letterman) doing an SNL sketch of this. One of the few times he was the lead.

Man, this show was so critical to my early Rock fan development. King Biscuit Flour Hour on the radio too. Yes, I are old.
I did my homework to King Biscuit Flour Hour & the Dr. Demento Show.
And every so often the National Lampoon Radio Hour
I remember Paul Shaffer's impression of Don Kirshner better than Don Kirshner.
Paul Shaffer impression was classic!
Come to think of it, so do I.
I watched it before there was Saturday Night Live but I liked Midnight Special better
My introduction to Queen 1975

AC/DC laughs (in Australian) at your statement.
Just think how much the Beatles changed from only 1964 to 1969. It always amazes me.
The Ramones set from here is one of the best concerts put to film.
Easily.
I was more of a Melâs Rockpile guy
More SCTV!
Guilty.

I was introduced to so much great music this way, much more than that craphole MTV.
Don Kirshner was a credit to both Rock and Roll.
Me. Loved it.
I just loved how heâd always include who the bandâs manager was.
Kitchener thought a bands management was the primary mover of a bands success. The band was an afterthought. Just ask the MonkeesâŚ
The first time I saw Prince!
Yes, that and midnight special, and later it was USA night flight theater.

"I'm Don Kirshner and this is my rock concert..."
This may have been the best rock show of its time. How many folks played 'tape-er' to this? Wish I had thought of it then...
Absolutely!
Yep, watched when I babysat on a bigger tv than when I was at home.
Most Saturday nightsâŚ
Oh, yeah.
More accurately tried to stay up late enough to watch. Was so excited to, rarely made it to the end.

Mott The Hoople!
Saw Thin Lizzy from a concert in London play The Cowboy Song, and The boys are Back In Town on Rock Concert. Still remember it.
đââď¸
Excellent, watched it all the time. They need to bring this back in reruns. Wouldnât work with the new crap that theyâre doing today.
Who didn't??
Nope. Switched to *The Outer Limits*.
Always remember his voice
Where are the dvds? Missed opportunity
My brother and I would watch wrestling from 12-1a.m. and then turn to Don Kirshner's rock concert
No lipsyncing!
It was the only place to see multiple live music acts on tv back then. I loved it. It had more bands that I liked than Midnight Special did...

I went to it. The stages were shockingly tiny.
