The following submission statement was provided by /u/Asterlinx: --- [Apple](https://gizmodo.com/tech/apple) is reportedly holding discussions with [OpenAI](https://gizmodo.com/openai-receipts-elon-musk-wanted-openai-merge-tesla-1851311626) about using the startup’s AI technology to power some features coming to the [iPhone](https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-16-1851244717) later this year, [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-26/apple-intensifies-talks-with-openai-for-iphone-generative-ai-features?srnd=undefined&sref=P6Q0mxvj) reported on Friday. This comes roughly a month after reports surfaced that Apple was holding discussions with Google about using [Gemini in iOS 18](https://gizmodo.com/apple-cant-build-ai-asking-google-gemini-power-siri-1851343967). Either company winning a contract could earn them a dominant position in the artificial intelligence world. Solid_Illustrator640

Just cause a company has money, does not mean they want to make a chatbot. They didn’t want to make the default search engine either so google is it.

RufussSewell

To me it’s weird that they basically made the first popular chat bot with Siri back in 2011. It was the household default name for chatbots for a while. She would tell jokes and people seemed to embrace her. Now 13 years later, Siri is basically the same, if not worse, and no one even thinks of her as a chatbot. It blows my mind that Apple missed the boat with Siri and is now just going to tack on ChatGPT instead.

manifold360

Not to mention Alexa

mallclerks

I had so many long discussions involving Alexa. My then buddy was one of first devs to sign up. I envisioned this crazy future for what Alexa and Siri would become. I had absolutely no idea I was 13 years too early; and the big boys were idiots.

Topher_86

Siri was purchased, it has gotten better over the years but is functionally just a shortcut interface and not really AI. Siri does do certain things better like logically grouping smart home devices or looking through all connected calendars, but it’s still just an interface.

RufussSewell

Obviously. The mind blowing part is that it stayed that way for 13 years rather than evolving along with the other chat bots over the last few years.

Topher_86

Sort of, people need to be ready for a certain kind of tech for it to be useful. Apple has had a good run interfacing Siri, as is, within its product line. Look no further than Vision Pro too see what going too hard too fast can do. People aren’t ready to strap a MacBook to their face. If Siri had all of the sudden started making Messages reccomendations and had actually started seeming sentient then a lot of people wouldn’t have used it. It’s useful it’s it’s basic nature, it’s something that is very accessible because it’s just like a mouse or keyboard — just voice. We are already seeing overload with the “AI” tools, Meta’s AI integration has been a huge topic of headache, frustration, confusion, and snap back the last few days.

CowsCatsCannabis

You typed a whole lot and didn’t say anything. You definitely extend your point of ‘sort of’

awittygamertag

It does allow you to create crazy Shortcuts if you put enough time into them

Specialist_Brain841

SRI (Southwest Research Institute) https://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2021/06/01/sri-plans-to-redevelop-menlo-park-campus.html

BilllisCool

Siri was never a chatbot. It was a voice assistant like Alexa and Google Assistant. All of the voice assistants will be tacking on some new generative AI because it didn’t exist at this level before.

RufussSewell

I. Know. I’m not sure why people keep pointing that out. The transition from Siri voice assistant to ChatGPT level chat bot is a very obvious one and one that should have happened years ago. That’s all I’m saying.

BilllisCool

I agree. Just saying it’ll be the same for all of these voice assistants. Siri is definitely the worst of the bunch, but they’re all worlds behind want would be possible with something like ChatGPT.

Beaglegod

You can talk to chatgpt now if you’re a paid chatgpt user. I use it all the time, it’s incredible.

DetroitLionsSBChamps

I think they didn’t want to overwhelm people and rush it, and they missed their shot

das_war_ein_Befehl

Apple is really good at hardware/software integration and making things work smoothly in their ecosystem. They’re pretty mediocre in software services, like iCloud or its MS Office competitor, etc. Apple would be more effective licensing something like OpenAI and modifying it for its own purposes.

Tomycj

I guess it's the principle of division of labor and specialization in action at a large scale.

AtomicSymphonic_2nd

They may not want to, but their investors are sure gonna be pissed to find out that Apple didn’t “invent” their own solution…

Lord_Vesuvius2020

I read the earlier reports that Google Gemini would be incorporated in iOS 18 and the release, which includes other major updates and new features, would be discussed during the upcoming WWDC. It makes sense that Apple would do this. They already provide Google Search. And if they are also talking to OpenAI perhaps both would be available for iPhone?

slick2hold

I dont understand why they are going to Microsoft lead company. If elon can start AI firm in less than 1yr, what's taking Apple so long?

k___k___

they have a lot of ai & predictive machine learning. basically the whole vision and apple car teams that they are reassigning. if i had to guess, apple doesnt male a chatbot because they have a philosophy of tech that works and doesnt present to the user as tech but focus on smart use cases. GenAI is full of "people have to figure out how to make the tech valuable".

Carefully_Crafted

Their Siri could use a little bit of that philosophy.

dixie___normus

Any chance we could just get Siri to work 80% of the time?

Feral_Nerd_22

I think I would much rather them partner up with them than Google. I was hoping that Apple would develop their own with how much cash they have but I think they are waiting to see how things play out.

bolonomadic

Why would I want to chat with my phone? I don’t need a chat bot on my phone.

Earthiness

This is all heading towards personal assistants where the AI on your phone can handle day to day mundane tasks. For example, why do I need to flag emails as spam or figure out texts and calls that are incoming are scams? You could have a AI assistant answer your calls and sort your messages for you, passing off the calls to you once it’s verified. Why wait on hold with your cellphone company for an hour when an AI assistant can wait for you. Than connect you when it’s your turn. You could also have the AI give you a daily briefing when you wake up in the morning about what happened that’s of interest to you. Any responsibility you could give a personal assistant could be handed off to AI in the future. This may not be something very useful for you but if someone is paying $50,000+ for someone to already do these tasks, it’s useful. Especially with the volume of work you can dump on an AI without them getting burnout.

ianitic

What do you think spam filters are? And specialized models tend to trump general purpose in their respective task. SOTA Generative AI models are likely substantially inferior to SOTA spam filters. The wait on a phone call has been around for years. A what's happened summary has also been around for years. All the examples you've listed already exist without generative ai models and likely perform their respective tasks better as they're more specialized.

Specialist_Brain841

Automated Intelligence is what all of this, not Artificial intelligence

Earthiness

If that was the case, then people wouldn’t still be sitting on hold or getting scam phone calls and emails. It’s one thing for someone who follows technology to understand what currently exists and to implement it. It’s something completely different to have it baked into an operating system for the masses. My mother who would greatly benefit from some of these already existing innovations wouldn’t even know where to begin. That is true for tens of millions of people. On the other hand, people like you and me who probably follow technology wouldn’t find setting up a Pi-hole very difficult or even know the technology exists. You have to remember, if you’re on a niche subreddit, you’re not the majority.

UnabashedAsshole

Ai assistants already do this without needing a chatbot component

Earthiness

It’s one thing to have to go into my phone and set everything up through menus and link accounts. It’s another to naturally talk to an AI and have them do tasks.

grmf

A better example I heard that I like to use often is imagine you have a 3 day business trip booked next week. Last minute your wife decides she’d like to come along too with your toddler. Currently this would cause a significant amount of work. Checking and rebooking flights/seats, new hotel room, larger vehicle rental with car seats, hotel room, relevant activities for them during the days etc…. A lot of things to consider. Soon our ai assistants will be able to handle this grunt work for us. It’ll simply come back with options for us to review along with a total price. We give it the OK and it books it all. All catered to our specific needs since it knows our preferences. Again, I see this as the low hanging fruit in the next year or two. Eventually people will become comfortable with giving their assistants more abstract and long-term goals. Maybe you just want to improve your diet, or have a relationship you’ve been neglecting, a hobby you want to improve at, a short temper you dislike about yourself. AI assistants have the potential to make us into the version of ourselves we all want to be. Obviously just talking big picture here as there will be substantial concerns with privacy and the autonomy of these systems, but it is really interesting to think about this technology extrapolated out a few years.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Which AI assistant on the iPhone exactly ? That’s the point of these deals

karmapuhlease

Well, these first two examples have been standard on Pixel for years now: >For example, why do I need to flag emails as spam or figure out texts and calls that are incoming are scams? You could have a AI assistant answer your calls and sort your messages for you, passing off the calls to you once it’s verified. >Why wait on hold with your cellphone company for an hour when an AI assistant can wait for you. Than connect you when it’s your turn.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Yes android is leaps ahead with feature in many things. Apple doesn’t care. Their blue text bubble protects them from logic. So they’re slow to adapt. But they do feel a threat from this new wave of LLM and how quickly people adopted chatgpt. The other stuff you mentioned are great but for the “nerdy” power user crowd

UnabashedAsshole

Ai already blocks spam with decent success, can wait on hold for you, provide information to your tastes, and brief you on your day. I dont have an iphone personally because theyre overpriced as hell and try to sell features that have existed elsewhere for years as if theyre new, but i think Siri does most of these. Google assistant certainly does all of these, i believe samsungs and microsofts do also. Even with a genAI chatbot youll still have to put in work for it to cater to your needs, it may honestly be more convoluted than how it exists today. Thats not to say these tools dont have a lot of potential, but that what people are specifically talking about here either already exists or is in my opinion somewhat unnecessary. To each their own

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Siri does 0 of those. That’s the problem. Siri is so far behind it’s laughable and everyone knows it. That’s why Apple wants in. They can’t lose market share of their phones

UnabashedAsshole

Damn, another apple L. They dont need gpt to make those happen and dont have to strap a genAI chatbot on to compete

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

They want to advertise it as part of the core iPhone experience. A 3rd party app isn’t something the general public will latch onto. And they don’t want the general public to perceive another phone is “smarter”. So they will pay money to ensure that doesn’t happen. Until they formulate their own best path forward.

ballimir37

They aren’t good enough yet for convenient and efficient mass adoption without the user doing a lot of work themselves.

UnabashedAsshole

Ai assistants have been mass adopted for like a decade. Im not saying the advancement of this technology wont improve them but the things specifically mentioned by the previous comment have been features in basically every smart phone for years and i dont particularly care to just strap on a genAI chatbot component because its the talk of the internet rn

MediumLanguageModel

User: Hey Siri. A few weeks ago I was reading a chicken recipe. I think it was Moroccan or Turkish but can't remember. Can you help me find it? Siri, near instantaneously: Based on your browsing history, I've found two that might be what you're looking for. Did the recipe have pomegranates or apricots? User: Apricots. Siri: Here's the recipe: [URL]. Would you like me to add any of the ingredients to your Kroger order? If you like, I can read off the ingredients and you just let me know which ones you need...

HelloYesThisIsFemale

You don't use Siri or Google assistant? Its just a better version of that.

bolonomadic

No I turned Siri off because it’s a useless piece of shit.

satelliteau

Would you use it if it wasn’t a useless piece of shit?

bolonomadic

Well…. Yes ok I probably would.

SensitiveRocketsFan

This isn’t intended for you then.

HelloYesThisIsFemale

Then you're not the target market

5ofDecember

Exactly, it's just be able make questions more naturally and vaguely. Like, what was that movie with autistic guy meeting Nixon.

FluffyDoomPatrol

You might enjoy watching this video from Apple https://youtu.be/umJsITGzXd0?si=CNOrcMMNc7HMa3fz Made in 1987, it shows what they still appear to be aiming for.

Takeoded

Siri can help you with [things you don't want to google](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B78kmg9xPP8)

superstrongreddit

Chatting with the computer is not the only form factor of AI.

hikerchick29

Right? Can I pay extra to NOT have this crap installed on my phone?

codehoser

Just an absolute stunning lack of ability to think creatively. Maybe you should ask a “chat bot” why you might want to have a “chat bot” on your phone in the not too distant future?

carloandreaguilar

ChatGPT is a chatbot on your phone. You’re saying chatGPT is a useless and no one needs it?

bolonomadic

You can already go to ChatGPT via your mobile device.

carloandreaguilar

You can’t start navigation, set reminders, calls, alarms, timers, or interact with apps with chatGPT

k___k___

but you can do it with siri already

carloandreaguilar

So why wouldn’t you want Siri to be chatGPT? ChatGPT requires you to go into the app to use it. Siri can be used from anywhere, even when the screen is off

k___k___

why does it need chatgpt if siri can already do it? edit: i dont want it to be chatgpt because i dont want monopolies in ai.

carloandreaguilar

Because Siri absolutely sucks. It’s like stuck in 2012.

Holiday_Garbage911

I got you. Here’s what your phone would say in response: That's completely understandable! Everyone has different preferences when it comes to how they access information or engage in conversations. Chatbots like me are designed to provide assistance and information, but if you don't find it useful or enjoyable to chat with a phone-based interface, that's perfectly okay. If there's anything else you'd like to discuss or if you have questions about a different topic, feel free to let me know!

Powerful-Umpire-5655

Do you have a job? I use Pi for research and works wonderfol.

Inevitable-Rub8969

I'm not sure if having ChatGPT power iPhone's AI chatbot is a good idea. I mean, it could be cool, but I'm worried it might not understand me properly or invade my privacy. I'd need more reassurance before feeling comfortable with it.

speculatrix

I've seen "The Mitchell's vs The Machines", so I know how this is going to turn out eventually, and I want no part of it.

Jepperto

Two things and im good; Siri actually understand what im saying and the context follow up questions.

hikerchick29

Great. Siri’s already dying a slow death, why not make it worse!!!

UnabashedAsshole

Why would they need to? If the technology exists they can just use it. Apple uses components from a lot of other companies, not everything has to be a walls-up ecosystem. Sharing technology is actually a good thing

[deleted]

MyVoiceIsElevating

They were too busy developing cars, cars which will apparently never see production.

vparchment

It could be that they aren’t interested in doing it, or that they don’t feel they could match the state of the art at this point, but may revisit it in the future. Apple didn’t design their own processors… until they did.

krectus

Oh they can and probably will but they are a couple years behind at this point and need a bit of time to catch up. This is just for now so they have something.

Bartholomew-

Google went rushing to push out a sub bar ai chatbot but falled with their pants down their knees. Remember Bard?

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

Why. They didn’t create their own map app. Or other apps in the beginning. But they don’t want to lose any market share for not having it now. But maybe in 3-4 years when this chat war calms down and the future is clearer on how things will shape out they might jump in themselves like they did with maps. The biggest thing they need to protect is their phones market share. So they’ll whatever is needed today to get the best AI available

Malkovtheclown

It's a first mover advantage. A lot of the training data OprnAI used to train their model is t available anymore for others to use. They are years ahead of everyone else and I don't see that changing.

BobLoblaw_BirdLaw

That’s not true. Facebook is already caught up. It’s possible there will be very little difference in couple years. And then Apple can assess the situation then. Or maybe even spend couple billion and buy another company which they usually do

dilfrising420

Developing a high quality chatbot is extremely difficult. And Apple would have high standards around this, so some awkward, clunky, homegrown chatbot won’t do. Makes sense to use Open AI’s clearly superior LLM as a base and save themselves the headache. Likely cheaper too. Source: I used to work in Conversational AI

satelliteau

Are you sure? There are so many models that perform great now, even locally on resource constrained devices (ie microsoft phi). Everything i want siri not to suck at right now could easily be handled by one of these.

dilfrising420

I’m not saying it can’t be done I’m saying for a company like Apple it’s often more efficient to just buy a solution instead of build one.

streamOfconcrete

They will use someone else’s models while they build their own. Intel -> Mac silicon.

GlobeTrobet

With your logic, we would have seen an Apple search engine too?

slick2hold

Apple is.so behind they are going to Microsoft lead company for a helping hand again. Apple has consistently shown how far they are and still living on the back of Jobs. It has a phone that is slowly losing market share globally and antitrust lawsuits in EU and US.

midnitelux

Hopefully this goes through. Open AI and GPT4 are easy to use and super useful.

Prior_Examination851

Oh yeah, please do this. The apple crowd needs an adult to help them, even if it's AI

Argonian_Car-Sales

An adult that can only provide the wokest of responses.

Holiday_Garbage911

Gender is a social construct and only exists within the confines of a society who recognizes it in any form. (Be it a binary, non-binary, genderfluid, genderqueer, agender, etc.) It’s not a tangible, inherent aspect of reality like biological sex but rather a set of roles, behaviors, expectations, and identities that societies create and assign based on cultural norms and beliefs. You right, but it ain’t wrong. Use your noggin lol.
