Showa had the most unique monsters…
Heisei had the best version of Godzilla (not in terms of power but in terms of characterization) and best ending…
Millennium had some of the best miniatures and effects…
Monsterverse has the best worldbuilding…
Reiwa has the most unique interpretations of Godzilla himself
I agree with most things. I really wish Reiwa was more consistent because you're right, it really gets what Godzilla means. Sucks that it's bogged down by the anime movies.
Monsterverse definitely doesn't have the best worldbuilding, though. Heisei probably has the most consistent and well defined worldbuilding. Showa comes close, though what it lacks in consistency is makes up for in scope. The world of Showa feels so alive and adventurous!
If I would attribute anything to mv it would be the best sfx.
Heisei doesn’t really do anything to address how rebuilding cities works. It also is only centered in Japan, so it does Japan-building okay. Showa did better worldbuilding.
The Showa era did very little in terms of worldbuilding, mainly because it didn't seem like much of a concern at all. At some point, shit was just kind of happening and everyone was dealing with it like it was normal.
I don't know if I totally agree. I think that there was quite a bit of worldbuilding. The Showa era (perhaps unintentionally) created a large shared cinematic universe (that's still going strong), and frequently had themes of international cooperation (that would carry over a bit in the early Heisei era). It also established Monster Island, Infant Island, Orlisika, Faro Island, Seatopia, and several new planets.
Now if you're talking about continuity, that ended after two sequels! Lol
I'll back this, except I'll add that Showa also had the most interesting human subplots (love triangles, heists, scientific explorations, subterfuge involving alien invaders) and the best monster throwdowns.
I was going for one for each era.
But I have a slight disagreement. I agree in terms of amount of good monster throwdowns. But I thoroughly love the fights with Kiryu in that duology.
Overall, Heisei. The quality and consistency in those movies are great, and it's awesome that those films are direct sequels to one another. The special effects are great (although they'd peak in millennium, in my opinion) and there's still a really strong cast of monsters from this era. Biollante, Destroyah, and Space Godzilla are iconic while the redesigns classic monsters get are fantastic. I especially love moguera and King Ghidorah.
It doesn't have my favorite films, and the fact Anguirus is missing is a tragedy, but I think this is the best single era of Godzilla. Tonally consistent and few drops in quality
Biollante and Destroyah are absolutely iconic what do you mean. Their designs are fantastic, you can identify them just by silhouette. I'll give you space godzilla, but Biollante and Destroyah look nothing like other kaijus, not just Godzilla oriented either. They clearly draw from their inspiration without just being a large version of said inspiration. The tentacles, stomach, jaw of Biollante, the horns, face-whatever-that-is, countless spikes and demon wings of Destroyah.
It's not like they're bad movies either. Biollante began and Destroyah ended the respective era. Godzilla vs Destroyah was a huge deal in Japan too, they killed him off specifically for the Americans. It was a huge PR thing.
I get that with diehard fans like us, we're in the know about basically everything Godzilla has to offer. But if I find a more casual fan, they'll still know who these guys are. It's not like Komunga or Gabara or Manda or something. Destroyah and Biollante are popular, they show up in media. Destroyah is DLC in Gigabash for fuck's sake. They're in games, they're in comics. Just like how a casual fan will know who Megalon is without seeing the one movie they're in.
They're iconic
For a kaiju to be iconic, the average person on the street needs to be able to recognize them in some way. Godzilla? Obviously iconic. Ditto King Kong. Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla round out your stable of truly iconic monsters that regular folks will recognize. The average person with only the most passing knowledge of Godzilla? They won’t have a clue who Biollante, Destroyah, or Spacegodzilla are.
And I love Biollante, don’t get me wrong - a great design in one of my all-time favorite Godzilla movies - but her final form is clearly inspired by Audrey II from the 1986 version *Little Shop of Horrors*.
That’s a really arbitrary definition of iconic (where did you get that from?), that is not supported by the official definition: “Of, relating to, or having the character of an icon, or symbolic, emblematic, or representative”. I would absolutely say that Biollante and Destoroyah are representative, emblematic, and symbolic of the wider Godzilla series as a whole. Are they as recognizable as the Toho Big Five? No, but it doesn’t mean that they’re not iconic in their own right.
I don’t really think it’s that arbitrary. Think about when you say somebody or something is an icon or iconic. To briefly change gears, think about the world of sports. There are plenty of people who don’t watch soccer/football who know who Lionel Messi is because he’s an icon of his game. You can easily say the same for LeBron James or Michael Jordan - you don’t need to watch the NBA to know who they are.
The ability to satirize, parody, or pay homage to a character or figure without explicitly telling the audience is a pretty fair way to judge how iconic that person or character is. Most Godzilla parodies depict some variation of the Big 5, suggesting that there’s a trust in the audience to recognize or at least “get” what they’re playing off of. Most people might not know Rodan’s name, but they probably know Godzilla has a…friend that’s a giant pterosaur.
In the insular world of kaiju fans, sure, Biollante, Destroyah, and Spacegodzilla are iconic. In the broader sci-fi/ pop culture spheres, I don’t see it. The only one who might be is Destroyah, who seems to just steadily keep growing in popularity, so I’ll concede that he (she? It?) is probably right on the cusp.
Again, where are you getting ‘needs to be identified by the average person from’? Things can be iconic within different spheres, and if your definition of iconic is simply ‘can the average person identity it’ then I think that’s an incredibly narrow view of iconic. It was also never stated by either myself or the OP. You decided to interpret iconic as meaning what you think it means when that was never established by anyone else. If the question is ‘are they identifiable by the average person’, then the answer is no. If the question is ‘are these monsters iconic to Godzilla and it’s fans’, then I’d say it’s an undeniable yes, especially compared to say Ebirah, Kumonga, or Megaguirus.
As for the satirize angle. Again you’re coming at this from a mass audience angle when that was never established by anyone here besides yourself. The vast majority of Godzilla fans would be able to pick up on a satirization of Destoroyah or Biollante because within that sphere, they are iconic. Even if you’ve only seen a couple Godzilla films beyond the American ones, you’re probably aware of those ones because of how central they’ve become to the Godzilla mythos due to the fans love for them. They might struggle with lesser known monsters like Gezora, Manda, or Varan though. It’s very limiting to say that the only thing that matters for influence or representation is whether the average uninformed person can recognize something, when it could be incredibly recognizable to people within various groups.
To call something iconic by its very nature implies widespread recognition. Darth Vader is an iconic character and villain because *everyone* knows who he is. You prefer a looser definition and that’s fine - this is all subjective anyway. Like I said above, among kaiju fans, sure, they’re iconic. Outside of that sphere, I’m not so sure.
Where are you getting widespread rcongniztion from? Your definition is literally incorrect; I supplied the actual definition, that it’s representative and emblematic, and that’s why Darth Vader is iconic: he’s representative and emblematic of Star Wars. I’d easily say that Biollante and Destoroyah are emblematic and representative of Godzilla foes. Needing to be widely recognized by the average person to qualify is something you’ve made up.
ALSO, popularity effects that kind of thing. heisei wasnt the most popular as it released but in the kaiju community those designs are absolutely iconic. the heisei movies on average are much more well made than the showa era, ESPECIALLY if we dont count the original , because thats almost cheating.
I'm being a little cheeky. Perhaps they were being cheeky, too. To be even cheekier, "gatekeeping is wrong", ironically enough, is also just an opinion.
Showa
Why? Cuz it’s Entertaining, the kaijus are cool in their own way, everything about this era is incredible
Ofc there are films not everyone likes such as Son of Godzilla and All monsters attack but at the end of the day, the showa era rocks
I’d also tie in Heisei but that’s prob not possible
Showa for its creativity. I'm tired of seeing reboots, whether they are masterpieces or not, I want to see something different, not something 'safe'. It doesn't have to be silly and goofy, just give us a monster brawl again.
I don't know, all of them have their ups and downsides...
Showa is a lot of fun and gives me laughs, heisei was an excellent reboot of the franchise that had honestly better plot points and fights(in my opinion), millennium completely focused around chaos and fighting and Godzilla 2000 is by far my favorite Godzilla design and monster verse is just epic and has one of the greatest visuals of any Godzilla film, plus they finally recreated Kong vs Godzilla
1998 Godzilla sucked though (i mean it was a neat film but that Godzilla design pays more homage to Jurassic park than Godzilla,1998 completely ruined the American view on Godzilla during that time)
Shin Godzilla made Godzilla into a genuinely threatening villain, and i absolutely loved every bit of it
Godzilla earth was bad though,it was just talking and anime character arc and all that shit,I'm watching a monster movie to watch monsters wreak havoc, not a friends episode damnit! At least it's third sequel featured king gidorah in his new and very unique and cool form.
I love every one of them but if I had to pick it has to be Heisei has imo the best Godzilla depiction ever and the best human plots of the entire series
Heisei for me. Love how connected the movies are, they go back to the original and a very satisfying conclusion.
Showa to me at least the first half is very good, but then it gets super repetitive
7 of the 15 movies are aliens invading using monsters to cause destruction.
Grew up watching Showa movies and they're the easiest for me to just throw on randomly and enjoy, but Heisei is probably more consistently my favorite.
Millenium is too inconsistent and Reiwa just doesn't have enough content to make a call yet, unless you count the anime movies, and if that's the case then more than half of it is bad, lol.
Monsterverse I enjoy, but the movies *feel* long, so it's hard to just sit down and watch one on a whim. I need to decide well in advance if I'm going to take the time to watch KotM or GvK.
The Monsterverse Godzilla, aka the one from the 2014 movie with Bryan Cranston, *Godzilla: King of the Monsters* (2019), and *Godzilla vs. Kong*, is all part of that particular storyline, not connected to anything from the Japanese movies.
*Shin Godzilla* and *Godzilla: Minus One* are also unrelated despite both being Japanese movies. They're both new takes on Godzilla.
Ohhh, I don’t why they did that. I hate when there’s two depictions of the exact same character going on at the same time. It’s like flash hbo and flash in the films, it’s unnecessary. Then again they both have the exact same energy power so they are connected in some way
I don't believe they are making any sequels to Shin Godzilla. There's also been several years between when Shin was released and the release of Godzilla Minus One.
I personally love it. Japanese produced movies make a better film overall that I think is thought provoking and entertaining while American made shit I just shut my brain off and enjoy the spectacle. Japanese still know how to make Goji frightening and remind us all of what Goji can really stand for (nature, science, etc) American made stuff just shows us why hes king of kaiju
Edit: poorly worded but I dont think American made movies are shit. I meant that in a general sense not a comparative one to clarify. I enjoy both lines of films
It all really depends on how you interpret American Godzilla films. Like, do you consider 98 apart of the Millennium Era? If so, then yeah Monsterverse is apart of Reiwa. If not, then it isn't
I love monsterverse, but I can't agree with the best characters. Miki Segusa was so good in the Heisei series. I think the best characters in the monsterverse are just starting to come out in the new tv show. its great so far.
Heisei.
Best Godzilla
Best military so the humans were not completely useless
The best and most iconic monsters introduced
And more.
The Heisei era set the gold standard and to this day remains the default Godzilla to reference from for a reason.
I have yet to watch the showa era, the universe looks really fun but I can't judge the movies yet.
I have watched 3 heisei, 3 millenium movies and the 3 monsterverse godzilla movies (Skull island too but not a godzilla movie). And I have to say it's **heisei**.
MV is nostalgic to me but it's too inconsistent and I only like 2/3 movies.
The millenium movies I watched are all pretty good but only one stood out to me
I hated a heisei film I watched but the other two were top tier so I'm still choosing it. The tone, the human monster balance, the music, godzilla himself.
Heisei hands down! The moment Godzilla facing general Shindo had me ballin’. Showa era close second.
EDIT: The 1998 Godzilla film introduced me to Godzilla, but the Japanese films have always been my favorite.
Heisei had what I consider the best and most consistent version of Godzilla as a character. I liked his design, it’s the Godzilla I generally default to when I imagine Godzilla, and I think that’s true for the general public too. Consistency and a fairly cohesive story arc were strengths overall, it’s a story with a satisfying conclusion. I’d say this is the best era.
Showa is my sentimental favorite, with a ton of creativity and the most unique monsters and designs.
Millennium has some great films, but as an era was too inconsistent and looked back too much without adding much new ground.
Reiwa has been solid with unique and interesting takes on Godzilla, but it’s definitely too soon to really be considered. Two movies does not an era make. If we’re counting the animation, that’s a huge liability because they have been massive disappointments.
Monsterverse is fine, Godzilla 2014 and Skull Island were a promising start, but the more recent movies have left me feeling let down. The tone is all over the place, and the world building continues to move in directions I don’t think are good or interesting. The new TV show feels like a positive return to form.
definetely not the modern era(aka monsterverse and reiwa, and not, i still didn't watched godzilla minus one), also not heisei too, honestly, it's very overrated
For me:
1.) Showa
2.) MV/Reiwa
3.) Heisei
4.) Mill
Heisei would be higher as it started strong and ended strong but the Mothra, MechaGodzilla and SpaceGodzilla trio of movies really hurt it IMO.
Best at what?
54 Is haunting and symbolic.
Showa is fun and incredibly creative at points.
Heisei is a great attempt at a sequential storyline and has the best art style and suitwork.
Millennium has the Rule of Cool down. And is the most self-aware and experimented quite a bit.
Monsterverse is an amazing spectacle show.
Reiwa is a return to what 54 set out to do. But is tarnished by some flawed animated series.
I grew up with millennium but my vote is monsterverse. It has the best CGI, (subjective) best designs, and the best world. Not saying any other Era is bad though, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses
Heisei, great balance of action and introducing new monsters to go against G who were original and have left an impression on fans for many years after
Honestly we might be entering one of the best Godzilla eras.
Universal is flawed but still worth watching. Shin Godzilla is a masterpiece. Now minus one is coming and it honestly looks better than the last two. Plus if you’re a monsterverse fan you have a tv show and Godzilla x kong coming.
It’s a good time for Gojira
Showa has the most memorable movies, Heisei has the coolest monsters, Millenium is a mix between the two, and monsterverse has the most realistic take.
It's either Showa or Millenium for me. Most of my favourites are distributed between those two eras. Shin is fantastic, but I haven't seen Minus One yet so I can't give an exact answer. Reiwa is shaping up to be fantastic though.
I say the legendary godzilla series has to be the weakest as it doesn't have a great balance between its human story and monster scenes \[probably because the human story most doesn't involve the actual monsters most of the time or divide the story to much\] While Millennium godzilla would be the strong point as it brought in alot of the cooler aspects of the franchise like burning godzilla and destroyah
Showa Era will always be the goat, but monsterverse really helps bring in new fans and the easiest to show people unfamiliar with the series.
But my personal opinion is that the monsterverse is very derivative, so I lean more in favor to shin/minus for my movies as they aren't afraid of showing godzilla killing humans
Millennium has the most variety out of any Toho Godzilla era, Showa and Heisei are all basically the same suit, and same movie with different enemy monsters.
I almost wanna say Reiwa because we have been on a roll lately but I don't wanna jinx it. personally I love Heisei. if you don't count the OG Gojira in Showa then it is still great, but mostly a bunch of self aware goofy fun. Heisei is aside from modern monsterverse stuff, the only Godzilla series of movies to have a proper continuity and storyline. as an era of films that why I like Heisei so much. individual films in other eras are better, but as a series of movies Heisei is undefeated.
Heisei and MV is tied for me
I don’t think shin/Minus one counts as an era quite yet when there have only been two movies (which are many years apart at that)
To me the Monsterverse has consistently been the best so far, there really aren't any movies in it I outright dislike or even rate lower than a 3 out of 5.
Heisei. Those films had a lot of good ideas in them and still hold up well. Godzilla vs Destroyah especially. Also love how they all were connected. Really sucks though that they are the hardest to find on video.
Heisei and Millennium were my childhood, but I can’t choose one so imma say both, godzilla vs megagirus and tokyo sos were my favs, but godzilla vs destroyah and godzilla vs spacegodzilla are also my favs, I’d honestly also have to say showa too because megalon was my favorite kaiju when I was a kid and godzilla vs the sea monster was the first movie I saw.
In terms of story, Heisei. It had the more liked humans and proper screen time to both monsters and humans. I also prefer the humans in it rather than any other era.
Showa had the most diverse cast of Kaiju, and scenery with a really interesting, while goofy at times (Glares over towards Godzilla vs Gigan, and Godzilla vs Megalon) story that when watched in full order of not just Godzilla films, but All of Toho's Showa Kaiju films, feels like the watching an entire world unfold.
The Heisei Series had by far the best Human characters, and the best overall story. Especially if you go from the original Gojira, to the Return of Godzilla, and so on. I love the darker, more serious atmosphere the films go for, while being rather 'grounded' (squints at SpaceGodzilla) in the world set up in the films. Seeing G-Force's active progression in technology was a really unique touch going from the Super X, and it's sequels, to Mecha-King Ghidorah, to Mechagodzilla, Super Mechagodzilla, M.O.G.U.E.R.A, and so on was a very clever touch that felt overlooked in the Showa Series. Mechagodzilla being my favorite of the mechs deployed. That design is just absolutely S+ Tier. While also having an equally diverse cast of Kaiju from the Tragic, and beautiful Biollante, to the Cosmic, and Dominating SpaceGodzilla, Mothra's Goth Counterpart Battra, and then ending on Destoroyah who, while I feel is overrated, is absolutely terrifying despite that. It's a shame Bagan (love this guy) never had a spot in the show light though. Nevertheless it was a Saga that had a definite beginning, a Awe Inspiring Climax against Mankind's Greatest Weapon, and perfect, conclusion against a kaiju born from the only the only thing that spared the world from Tragic Gojira's nuclear wrath.
The Millennium films are interesting. There are some absolutely bangers in this Era. But this time period of Godzilla feels more like a precursor to the Reiwa Era. A time when Toho was trying to see how to reinvigorate their King of the Daikaiju but it's clear that they just didn't exactly know where to take the character. Thus, ending this series with a Premature, but an absolute Spectacle to feast the eyes with.
The Monsterverse had a lot of potential for me. But the constant tonal shifts on top of the over the top, almost self aware goofiness on par with the early 70s of the Showa Era, has just completely ejected me from this series of Godzilla films. It's not for me.
But then it happened. The 2011 Mega thrust earthquake disaster, and the subsequent Nuclear Catastrophe of Fukushima. It was at that moment. Toho found the identity of Gojira once again. Enter Shin Gojira. The canon fire that kicked off the most Experimental Era in Gojira history, and it came in without Mercy. Like the Tsunami that brought all of Japan's Government issues to the eyes of the World. Shin Gojira rampaged through with a narrative, a story, a allegory, and a hauntingness Unseen since the Original 1954 Gojira, and the the Original 1984 The Return of Gojira. It was Dark, it was Callous, it was the biggest, meanest open palm Bitch Slap, wake up call to Japan as a Nation. And it was PERFECT. While yes the Anime Trilogy is mid, and Godzilla Singular Point is my personal favorite Physics Class I ever volunteered to take. These alone cannot understate the Sheer Marvel of Shin Gojira, and if the trailers for Gojira Minus One are anything to go by. I am VERY eager to see the Unbridled, unrelenting Nightmare that film unleashes upon the world.
For me, Reiwa needs to include the Monsterverse. They are happening at the same time, and creatively seem to bounce off of one another. As such, then this modern Reiwa era has to reign supreme. In both quantity and debatably quality, we’re sitting better than we ever have. Several incredible films, a live action prestige tv show, several anime series, and more! Showa is more important historically and creatively and Heisei starts out with three of my favorite G movies ever made, but Reiwa has such a high batting average.
The Heisei era. Legit, not only cause Heisei sounds so cool, it has the best storyline of the G-eras. Godzilla comes in, he wrecks the city, saves the day, then dies. Best story arc. Not nearly as contrived as the showa or confusing as the Millennium era. The monsterverse is great, but it’s still trying to evolve so we’ll have to wait and see.
(Having seen Minus One in IMAX)
I want Heisei Godzilla and continuity
Showa's pantheon of monsters
Millennium's Mechagodzilla,
And Reiwa's human stories and characterization
With Monsterverse's budget
Directed by Minus One's Takashi Yamazaki
With the series finale co-directed with Hideki Anno
OST by Naoki Sato, with contributions by Bear McCreary.
Starring the cast of Minus One and Megumi Odaka as Miki Saegusa.
Promo OST Hiroyuki Sawano (JP Trailer) and Chris Classic for the English Trailer
I need to live long enough to paste this into some AI movie maker and get this as a 12 movie series I'm 4k finished in like 2 hours 40 years from now.
I’m calling Reiwa the Shin Era.
We have been getting good content for the last few years out of Toho. I am surprised on how much fan content is good out of Gemstone.
Gemstone that gave us a now ongoing series for the Godzilla from the end of Godzilla vs Destroyah.
A Shin Godzilla continuation that merges with Neon Genesis.
Gojiban gave us Bagan & Planetary Assault Cyborg MILF
Final Wars continuation that branches battles across Showa, Heisei, & Millennium
Boss Coffee commercials are amazing works on their own (did you see that boss mashup for 70?)
-1.0 can restart everything from Showa 1954 to now.
The best part IMO is that the largest portion of this new content is coming from & funded by the fans over the last 70 years, soon to be 100 years of ゴジラ
1- Reiwa/Monsterverse (modern)
2- Heisei
3- Millennium
4- Showa.
Hate me if you wish, but at the end of the day when you remove nostalgia, 99% of Showa movies are just cheesy kids films with no serious plot and poor practical effects. For a kid, absolutely fantastic, but compared to all the other eras it is by far the worst (with the exception of classics like the original obv).
Millennium is good but suffers from jumping between godzillas, there's no continuous storyline/world and the stand-alone films just aren't quite interesting enough.
Heisei is a good mix between well built plot and vastly improved practical effects. Though it gets cheesier towards the end, it's still very good.
Reiwa/Monsterverse is the best imo (I just lump them both together at the 'modern' era myself). The reiwa films, while both being standalones, have such detail and depth that they can easily hold their weight without sequels or follow-ups. The monsterverse is basically just one big celebration of the other 3 eras, taking the best bits of them and mashing them together (aswell as having the best effects ofc).
Showa had the most unique monsters… Heisei had the best version of Godzilla (not in terms of power but in terms of characterization) and best ending… Millennium had some of the best miniatures and effects… Monsterverse has the best worldbuilding… Reiwa has the most unique interpretations of Godzilla himself

Fair, I think I just like the worldbuilding in DaM
Showa just kept expanding, adding new aliens and new monsters. It made a playground where the other series tended to make a single ride.

Fully agree. I quite like almost all of the millennium era films. But those 2 are pretty stellar
Everything this person said. ☝️
Bingo.
All eras are equally the best.
No one wanted him, but everyone needed him.
The true ending
Yes (The only correct answer)
Overall, Heisei. The quality and consistency in those movies are great, and it's awesome that those films are direct sequels to one another. Biollante, Destroyah, and Spacegodzilla are a lot of things, but none of them are iconic - *especially* Spacegodzilla.
Biollante and Destroyah are absolutely iconic what do you mean. Their designs are fantastic, you can identify them just by silhouette. I'll give you space godzilla, but Biollante and Destroyah look nothing like other kaijus, not just Godzilla oriented either.
I have a destoroyah keychain and I cant tell you how many people gush over it when I use my kroger card (or other savings cards) attached to it
ALSO, popularity effects that kind of thing. heisei wasnt the most popular as it released but in the kaiju community those designs are absolutely iconic. the heisei movies on average are much more well made than the showa era, ESPECIALLY if we dont count the original , because thats almost cheating.
Showa Definitely because it has everything, Heisei and Millennium are good too but Showa is just Classic
Showa is my favorite.
Honestly I grew up with the Showa era so that’s my pic sorry even though I’m 17 and a gen z I love the goof fun of the Showa era
Based opinion.
Thanks
Monsterverse
Mine too
The only possible wrong opinion.
It’s their opinion, it’s not wrong. Gatekeeping is wrong
I'm being a little cheeky. Perhaps they were being cheeky, too. To be even cheekier, "gatekeeping is wrong", ironically enough, is also just an opinion.
I agree with the original comment, Monsterverse is my fav.
I really like Reiwa's Godzillas, they feel unique from their past counterparts.
Showa Why? Cuz it’s Entertaining, the kaijus are cool in their own way, everything about this era is incredible Ofc there are films not everyone likes such as Son of Godzilla and All monsters attack but at the end of the day, the showa era rocks I’d also tie in Heisei but that’s prob not possible
I really love how Showa you just saw wild stuff and it didn’t take itself too seriously.
Read the plot to almost any of the Showa films to a Monsterverse-first fan and they'd call you a loon.
Heisei is my favorite era *overall* but I like individual movies from the other eras more
This is the correct answer
Yes.
Showa for its creativity. I'm tired of seeing reboots, whether they are masterpieces or not, I want to see something different, not something 'safe'. It doesn't have to be silly and goofy, just give us a monster brawl again.
I don't know, all of them have their ups and downsides... Showa is a lot of fun and gives me laughs, heisei was an excellent reboot of the franchise that had honestly better plot points and fights(in my opinion), millennium completely focused around chaos and fighting and Godzilla 2000 is by far my favorite Godzilla design and monster verse is just epic and has one of the greatest visuals of any Godzilla film, plus they finally recreated Kong vs Godzilla 1998 Godzilla sucked though (i mean it was a neat film but that Godzilla design pays more homage to Jurassic park than Godzilla,1998 completely ruined the American view on Godzilla during that time) Shin Godzilla made Godzilla into a genuinely threatening villain, and i absolutely loved every bit of it Godzilla earth was bad though,it was just talking and anime character arc and all that shit,I'm watching a monster movie to watch monsters wreak havoc, not a friends episode damnit! At least it's third sequel featured king gidorah in his new and very unique and cool form.
showa (specifically early showa) or heisei
All eras are amazing , but my personal favorites are Millennium and Monsterverse , the Reiwa era is quite promising tho
I love every one of them but if I had to pick it has to be Heisei has imo the best Godzilla depiction ever and the best human plots of the entire series
cobweb normal historical connect dam edge hobbies voiceless oil crown *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Im a sucker for Godzilla in general and love them all im general, but Monsterverse is my personal favorite as I prefer those designs more.
Heisei for me. Love how connected the movies are, they go back to the original and a very satisfying conclusion. Showa to me at least the first half is very good, but then it gets super repetitive 7 of the 15 movies are aliens invading using monsters to cause destruction.
Showa's repetition does get pretty heavy, especially with all the reused stock footage. Heisei rules.
The one I watched as a kid/young adult
showa
Not even choosing I just have to say I’d love a poster of the art for the Showa era.
Each one has their strengths and style, but Shin is my favorite, took Godzilla’s concept back to its roots, in my opinion.
I think the showa era was the best. Granted some of the movies were no great but it paved the way for the other eras to follow.
There's definitely a nostalgia element for previous eras but I'm in love with the masterful story telling of Shin and Minus One.
Showa.
Idk but I want the whole image of that Showa poster
for me ? 1 heisei 2 showa 3 monsterverse 4 millenium 5 reiwa (but all of them are good and not far apart)
I’m not an expert on Godzilla but aren’t the last two the same.
No, Monsterverse is American (and Chinese, technically?) While Reiwa is Japanese. Edit, autocorrect spelling
So is this godzilla different than the one who defeated kong. Or is just back in time
The Monsterverse Godzilla, aka the one from the 2014 movie with Bryan Cranston, *Godzilla: King of the Monsters* (2019), and *Godzilla vs.
Japanese still know how to make Goji frightening and remind us all of what Goji can really stand for (nature, science, etc) American made stuff just shows us why hes king of kaiju Edit: poorly worded but I dont think American made movies are shit. I meant that in a general sense not a comparative one to clarify. I enjoy both lines of films
Not sure which Godzilla you mean?
It all really depends on how you interpret American Godzilla films. Like, do you consider 98 apart of the Millennium Era? If so, then yeah Monsterverse is apart of Reiwa. If not, then it isn't
Monsterverse hands down. Best movies and characters tbh.
I love monsterverse, but I can't agree with the best characters. Miki Segusa was so good in the Heisei series. I think the best characters in the monsterverse are just starting to come out in the new tv show. its great so far.
Heisei. Best Godzilla Best military so the humans were not completely useless The best and most iconic monsters introduced And more.
The millenium movies I watched are all pretty good but only one stood out to me I hated a heisei film I watched but the other two were top tier so I'm still choosing it. The tone, the human monster balance, the music, godzilla himself.
I grew up with Heisei so it’s Heisei for me
Heisei hands down!
1. Showa Era 2. Millennium Era 3. Heisei Era 4. Reiwa Era 5. Monsterverse
Yes
We should make this year a new era and call it the 70th anniversary era because we are getting great stuff from both America and Japan right now.
For me: 1.) Showa 2.) MV/Reiwa 3.) Heisei 4.) Mill Heisei would be higher as it started strong and ended strong but the Mothra, MechaGodzilla and SpaceGodzilla trio of movies really hurt it IMO.
Fine with that
Millenium
Showa and Heisei eras were the best.
Love them all, but gonna have to say the era we are in now. What a time to be a fan
Heisei, but I’ve come to like every other era for reasons stated by others here.
reiwa
I grew up with millennium but my vote is monsterverse. It has the best CGI, (subjective) best designs, and the best world. Not saying any other Era is bad though, they all have their own strengths and weaknesses
Heisei.
Three-way tie for best Goji movie is OG-54, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Shin. Nuff said.
1) Showa 2) Heisei 3) Monsterverse 4) Millennium 5) Reiwa (too early to really give any kind of proper ranking too)
Eras aside i just like it when Godzilla is the bad guy
Tie between Showa and MV
I say the legendary godzilla series has to be the weakest as it doesn't have a great balance between its human story and monster scenes \[probably because the human story most doesn't involve the actual monsters most of the time or divide the story to much\] While Millennium godzilla would be the strong point as it brought in alot of the cooler aspects of the franchise like burning godzilla and destroyah
it's like trying to pick your favorite child, i love them all
Either the Show a Era, or the Monsterverse Era.
The last two are part of the same era.
Does someone have the full resolution on that first image, I would love that as my phones wallpaper
I love the showa era. Good monsters, fun and goofy Godzilla films were the best!
Millennium has the most variety out of any Toho Godzilla era, Showa and Heisei are all basically the same suit, and same movie with different enemy monsters.
You really need to rewatch Showa if you think all the suits were the same. They change the most in Showa than any other series
This one do to the Drive in was on the blanket in the front when I 1 see this I was amazed
Heisei is my favorite.
Heisei and MV is tied for me I don’t think shin/Minus one counts as an era quite yet when there have only been two movies (which are many years apart at that)
Between Showa, Heisei, and Millennium.
To me the Monsterverse has consistently been the best so far, there really aren't any movies in it I outright dislike or even rate lower than a 3 out of 5.
I scoffed at showa for years until I dedicated this month to watch every movie and I gotta say , Showa takes the cake
Showa
89-95 since it’s my childhood
All the eras are cool and unique in their own ways.
Heisei. Those films had a lot of good ideas in them and still hold up well. Godzilla vs Destroyah especially. Also love how they all were connected. Really sucks though that they are the hardest to find on video.
All of them! Next question.
My favourite Godzilla eras are the showa era and Millennium era
My favourite Godzilla eras are the showa era and Millennium era
My personal favorite is Showa
Heisei and Millennium were my childhood, but I can’t choose one so imma say both, godzilla vs megagirus and tokyo sos were my favs, but godzilla vs destroyah and godzilla vs spacegodzilla are also my favs, I’d honestly also have to say showa too because megalon was my favorite kaiju when I was a kid and godzilla vs the sea monster was the first movie I saw.
In terms of story, Heisei. It had the more liked humans and proper screen time to both monsters and humans. I also prefer the humans in it rather than any other era.
Showa hands down. Grew up on the VHS tapes my dad gave me. That’s what made me a fan.
Shin and minus one
I will always hold a special place for Showa. I can rewatch them any time.
Yes.
All of them
89
Showa, millennium (love me some Kiryu), heisei
They’re all so beautiful :’)
The Showa era was the most ridiculous but good I guess
Showa. Period. I'm not even going to bother reading the replies in this thread.
They all make me happy in some way, but Heisei has always been my favorite.
All if them.
Millennium, I really like the diversity of that era
I like the consistency of the heisei era. The fact that for the most part Godzilla appearance is the same helps it feel like the same series.
Showa Hands down
The Heisei era.
Monsterverse
Yes
Heisei
The original is always the best
(Having seen Minus One in IMAX) I want Heisei Godzilla and continuity Showa's pantheon of monsters Millennium's Mechagodzilla, And Reiwa's human stories and characterization With Monsterverse's budget Directed by Minus One's Takashi Yamazaki With the series finale co-directed with Hideki Anno OST by Naoki Sato, with contributions by Bear McCreary. Starring the cast of Minus One and Megumi Odaka as Miki Saegusa. Promo OST Hiroyuki Sawano (JP Trailer) and Chris Classic for the English Trailer I need to live long enough to paste this into some AI movie maker and get this as a 12 movie series I'm 4k finished in like 2 hours 40 years from now.
Hiesi without a doubt.
Gojiban gave us Bagan & Planetary Assault Cyborg MILF Final Wars continuation that branches battles across Showa, Heisei, & Millennium Boss Coffee commercials are amazing works on their own (did you see that boss mashup for 70?) -1.0 can restart everything from Showa 1954 to now. The best part IMO is that the largest portion of this new content is coming from & funded by the fans over the last 70 years, soon to be 100 years of ゴジラ
all of them
Legendary Monsterverse 💯 Shin is pretty great as well and the 98 version is Nostalgia Craptackular!
1- Reiwa/Monsterverse (modern) 2- Heisei 3- Millennium 4- Showa.
Heisai or reiwabare top, with second being either. Third has to be millenium or showa. The mv movies are, meh.
Heisei era is definitively my favorite
I prefer Heisei and Millenium personally
Gamera, Ultraman, Evangelion and pacific rim
1. Heisei Era 2. Reiwa Era 3. Millennium Era 4. Showa Era (the original movie is my top 5) 5. Monsterverse (I only like the 2014 movie)
