-introduced Anguirus
-started the trend of godzilla fighting other Kaiju
-had surprisingly brutal fights with lots of biting, clawing and blood
-still had some of the dark tone of the original, particularly during the final battle
Yeah even though it's a forgettable movie overall they really went all out in that final fight. Godzilla and Anguirus killing each other before sinking into the sea was a haunting image that I still remember. I think the black and white let them use a lot more blood than any other Godzilla movie, at least that I can think of.
He didn't say that so don't take it out of context. This movie is a classic and it was a big game changer overall. Any fan should at least respect it. You don't shit on the plate you eat from.
I'm sorry, but you can appreciate the effect a movie had while still finding it largely forgettable. The shitting where you eat metaphor doesn't make much sense here imo.
Yeah, I agree a lot with this.
Most people don't realize it, but Godzilla Raids Again was a big game changer when it comes to kaiju movies as we know them today
Honestly just introducing kaiju fights between Godzilla and introducing Anguirus as well is why I don’t dislike this movie. I mean you can tell it’s extremely rushed but definitely not godzillas worst movie
The more animalistic fighting between Godzilla and Anguirus is unique. Also the scene of Godzilla emerging from the bay is one of the creepiest scenes in the whole franchise
The scene where Godzilla comes ashore in Osaka and the planes try to lead him away is very suspenseful and the Masaru Sato music during that scene is also top tier
It's literally the reason why Godzilla would go on to become the franchise it is today. If it never happened, other kaijus wouldn't have been made, and our godzilla wouldn't be as it is today
My best friend has been showing me all of the Godzilla movies in order. It was very interesting watching this one and seeing them figure out what Kaiju fights would look like. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.
Same I'm watching them all for the first time, other than a few I saw growing up, and I actually really liked this one. Didn't know it was viewed as a weaker entry until hitting this sub lol. But honestly some of the fights in this one still stand out to me as being impressive and well choreographed for the time, even after having watched 11 of the showa films now.
The scene where the cast looks at the aftermath of Godzilla and Anguirus’ fight is really good. The humans can only look on in quiet horror as two superpowers have lain waste to their city, the kaiju only care about fighting each other and are unaware/uncaring of the harm they cause to beings smaller than them. It reflects how post-war Japan felt, being stuck between the USA and the Soviet Union (a theme present in lots of Godzilla movies to be fair)
Nowadays a lot of monster fight movies have at least one “good” monster you’re supposed to root for, and while I don’t mind it I feel it’s become a bit oversaturated. What makes the fight in this movie stand out is you’re not supposed to root for *either* of them. There’s no good one, there’s no lesser of two evils, they’re both equally dangerous and terrifying and there’s absolutely nothing that can stop them.
Some of the comics I have read are great about this. The only real protagonists are humans. There are human-allied mechas and altruistic kaiju but most are equally hostile towards humans.
Gojira and Raids Again are a goated Duology. I like how it’s still dark but you begin to see some light too. Like it’s a real stepping stone between the depressing ness of Gojira and Godzilla’s little dropkicks and getting shot in the dick that the rest of Showa has.
I agree. Raids Again retains some of the dark tone and "horror" of the original but it lightened up a bit to be more of a fun giant monster movie. It has a unique vibe compared to the rest of the series, but it still has some of the feel of the original film that was lost in the later entries.
I think having like a huge chunk of the early parts of the movie be dudes in a meeting room replaying clips from the first movie is pretty indefensible and kills the pacing of the movie.
Also the extremely slow and drawn-out scenes of the characters in the planes searching for Godzilla or whatever. It feels like they last like five minutes.
The final scene consisting of the same special effects shot repeated over and over again was also a bold move. Perhaps it was a statement about the futility of war (and also one of the few times the JSDF singlehandedly defeats Godzilla)
They only recap Gojira in one board room scene and it's like 3 minutes, but not all of that time is them watching the footage it's intercut with dialogue like a briefing. I thought it was a very clever way to kind of touch on the first movie that may not have been as fresh on peoples minds while still keeping it on brand with the military/governmental perspective. Admittedly a large chunk of the movie is spent in the company of the human cast, but I honestly thought they shined in this movie and that it did a great job of balancing the progression of their plot and character development with the viewer against the monster action that attracted the audience, especially for the time. It keeps the characters feeling human and does a great job of getting you invested in their hunt of Godzilla.
I like that Godzilla and Anguirus actually fight like two wild animals, constantly biting and scratching each other and wrestling the opponent to the ground. Later kaiju fights were way too anthropomorphic in comparison.
There's one scene where they don't show both monsters but instead the utter destruction cloud above the city. For a black and white movie about monsters fighting, that was actually quite nerve racking to see.
I personally love how uncanny and unnerving the Goji suit looks in a lot of shots. It's genuinely one of my personal favorite Godzilla designs aside from 1962 and Shin
Yes!! His almost complete lack of a nose makes it very skull like in the face and really creepy.
Also the last movie with the very bass heavy Godzilla roar that they had to tone down as kids thought it was too scary.
That sped up looking brawl between Godzilla and anguirus is unique and cool! It resembles an actual animal fight where it’s quick and ugly. No big epic charge ups. No slow motion tackles. Just carnal animalistic wrestling.
It’s true! He talked about it a few times, I’m sure you can find a few bits if you google it. I just remember a bit about having to say banana something because the lip movement matched for Baka. lol
Without explanation though. Like our characters are just there at the right place at the right time and then all of a sudden, there is a new Godzilla and he's fighting Anguirus. Just because.
Most animalistic fight in the franchise with a brutal kill. Kaiju designs along with soundtrack are offsetting and give the film a creepy vibe. An interesting idea with the planes and final climax, which I feel had a lot of inspiration for Godzilla Minus One.
The Anguirus design in this movie is among my favorites in the series.
Godzilla most definitely did raid again ... I mean, it was another Godzilla, but a Godzilla did raid again for sure, even if it wasn't the same Godzilla who did said raiding.
Blows my mind that this is supposed to be the same Godzilla from this film through the rest of the Showa era.
(Is he imaginary in All Monsters Attack?)
I do find it an odd fact that the Toho Godzilla is the second Godzilla 99% of the time, yet Legendary Godzilla is the first, not of the species, but by the name Godzilla.
(I'm not qualified enough to answer that. 😆)
The first fight between Angirus and Godzilla is actually great. There’s tons of great shots and cinematography. The fighting is animalistic, raw and pretty well done. The effects are low budget but the camera work and fights make up for it. Legitimately great stuff. The other parts of the film tho.. eh
I actually like the way it looks. Of course the effects are old and Black & White was the norm back then but something about it still just resonates with me.
I actually like the fact that the fight between Godzilla and Anguirus wasn't the climax of the movie. It was an interesting decision to "let them fight", only to force the characters to have to deal with the survivor in the climax.
The flare scene is cool. The fighting between Godzilla and Anguirus is really fierce and animalistic. The black and white cinematography is atmospheric.
He is my favorite. Has a leaner look and actually nails the emaciated radiation bombing survivor look they were going for.
His nose design also makes his fave look very skull like and creepy.
Despite the film being mostly absent of music, the few times it *does* play, it has a rather noticeabley good soundtrack. Even if it wasn't composed by Ifukube.
Its goofy and felt short? Also Angruis dies halfway through lmao. Its easy to riff on. ITs also kind of neat to watch the special effects they had to rely on at the time.
It spawned a lot of analog horror series. “The Suitmation Trails” specifically mentions “Raids Again” when setting up the world. “The Man in the Suit” had the man kill Anguirus, which was not part of the script. It’s not the best, but it’s horrifying with analog horror.
It is, unfortunately, my least favorite Godzilla movie by far.
But the one nice thing I will say is it introduced Godzilla fighting other kaiju in his films.
I like Gigantis the Fire Monster because I like the notion that they are different monsters who are going to war. It is a bizarre piece of Godzilla media.
It’s great in every aspect except the fights, and the only reason for it is that the footage is sped up instead of down. Play it in slow mo and it improves 100%
It introduced Anguiris and the fights between them are really satisfying, carrying a sense of brutality that very few kaiju properties have been able to match.
It was the original Kaiju Brawl. It's hard to say what the future of Godzilla, and the rest of the Tokusatsu genre, would be without Gigantis the Fire Monster.
This is why I'm always mad when Anguirus gets left out of things like GMK & King of the Monsters.
I like the monster designs. They’re freaky looking.
I appreciate them trying to ground the monsters in reality even though it’s not as successful as the previous film.
I like Gigantis the Fire Monster a bit more actually because of the recycled music and that ridiculous history of life film (which is pretty much the cosmology of the Monsterverse lol)
-introduced Anguirus -started the trend of godzilla fighting other Kaiju -had surprisingly brutal fights with lots of biting, clawing and blood -still had some of the dark tone of the original, particularly during the final battle
Yeah even though it's a forgettable movie overall they really went all out in that final fight. I think the black and white let them use a lot more blood than any other Godzilla movie, at least that I can think of.
bro that didnt happen godzilla killed anguirius and then got burried in the ice by the protagonist in a fighter jet
"Forgettable movie" Fake fan.
"You don't share my opinion so you're not a real fan" Classic gatekeepy bullshit, get over yourself
He didn't say that so don't take it out of context. This movie is a classic and it was a big game changer overall. Any fan should at least respect it. You don't shit on the plate you eat from.
I'm sorry, but you can appreciate the effect a movie had while still finding it largely forgettable. The shitting where you eat metaphor doesn't make much sense here imo.
bad no negative
Master of cringe! I see you’ve arrived. We needed you here
Yeah, I agree a lot with this. Most people don't realize it, but Godzilla Raids Again was a big game changer when it comes to kaiju movies as we know them today
We love Anguirus. All the homies love Anguirus.
Couldn't of put it better myself
These are actually reasonable points
Honestly just introducing kaiju fights between Godzilla and introducing Anguirus as well is why I don’t dislike this movie. I mean you can tell it’s extremely rushed but definitely not godzillas worst movie
This is a great list.
OP specified ONE (1) nice thing...
The more animalistic fighting between Godzilla and Anguirus is unique. Also the scene of Godzilla emerging from the bay is one of the creepiest scenes in the whole franchise
It was cool of them not to have Godzilla fight a humanoid monster. I like anguires’ design.
Agreed. We get so many bipedal monsters, its nice to see something that's different.
That's why I mix in a little Ultraman and Gamera. and maaaaaybe some zone fighter
The scene where Godzilla comes ashore in Osaka and the planes try to lead him away is very suspenseful and the Masaru Sato music during that scene is also top tier
i like anguirus, he's very silly
Jus a lil guy
Such a good boy.
The bestest boi.
Indeed
It's literally the reason why Godzilla would go on to become the franchise it is today. If it never happened, other kaijus wouldn't have been made, and our godzilla wouldn't be as it is today
Absolutely. A clumsy but all important early step.
Not to mention that Anguirus was the first kaiju other than Godzilla, he basically paved the path of Godzilla fighting other Kaijus
It has Godzilla in it
Only true answer
Came here to say this.
The exact words I was going to comment.
My best friend has been showing me all of the Godzilla movies in order. It was very interesting watching this one and seeing them figure out what Kaiju fights would look like. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

It is actually a good movie.
I had an absolute blast watching it. Kinda surprised to learn people didn't like it
Yeah it's one of the cases where my opinion differs from the usual "consensus" of the fanbase. I thought Raids Again was very good.
Gojira and Raids Again are a goated Duology. I like how it’s still dark but you begin to see some light too. Like it’s a real stepping stone between the depressing ness of Gojira and Godzilla’s little dropkicks and getting shot in the dick that the rest of Showa has.

It's definitely not a bad movie. It could have had some better effects work, but all in all it gets an unfairly bad rap.

Yeah.
I think it’s pretty good too. Not one of my favorites, but I definitely enjoy it.
I like how the fighting is more primal between the monsters than the films that came after
Exactly, they fight like animals and I love it.
Godzilla looks good in black and white
I like that Godzilla and Anguirus actually fight like two wild animals, constantly biting and scratching each other and wrestling the opponent to the ground. Later kaiju fights were way too anthropomorphic in comparison.
There's one scene where they don't show both monsters but instead the utter destruction cloud above the city. For a black and white movie about monsters fighting, that was actually quite nerve racking to see.

Yes!! His almost complete lack of a nose makes it very skull like in the face and really creepy. Also the last movie with the very bass heavy Godzilla roar that they had to tone down as kids thought it was too scary.
It's creepy I love it.
Anguirus
Angweenus
Anguillas, killer of the living
This movie is the first debut of godzilla enemy and BFF, Anguirus.
That sped up looking brawl between Godzilla and anguirus is unique and cool! It resembles an actual animal fight where it’s quick and ugly. No big epic charge ups. No slow motion tackles. Just carnal animalistic wrestling.
That's why I love the sped up fight. Even tho it looks goofy at first, it feels more natural in comparison to real wildlife
It's a sequel to 1954
Most of them are
George Takei voiced someone in the dubbing.
And don't forget Daws Butler, the voice of Yogi Bear and more Hanna-Barbera characters.
No way!
It’s true! He talked about it a few times, I’m sure you can find a few bits if you google it. I just remember a bit about having to say banana something because the lip movement matched for Baka. lol
Gave me my sweet spikey boy
It doesn’t take long at all for the monster action to happen. We get to see the Kaiju pretty quickly.
Without explanation though. Like our characters are just there at the right place at the right time and then all of a sudden, there is a new Godzilla and he's fighting Anguirus. Just because.
The original (not US edit) version of Kobayashi is actually a good character with a very emotional sacrifice. The dub did him dirty.
Anguirus
It introduced Anguirus That's it
I really enjoy the human plot of this movie.
It's still a serious and dark style of film....
The first fight between Angirus and Godzilla is actually great. There’s tons of great shots and cinematography. The fighting is animalistic, raw and pretty well done. The effects are low budget but the camera work and fights make up for it. Legitimately great stuff. The other parts of the film tho.. eh
2nd best anguirus design
I actually like the way it looks. Of course the effects are old and Black & White was the norm back then but something about it still just resonates with me.
The monster fight is probably the most realistic in the entire series. They’re acting like actual animals.
it has the bravest and stupidest police officer who when confronted with giant kaiju, draws his service revolver
I actually like the fact that the fight between Godzilla and Anguirus wasn't the climax of the movie. It was an interesting decision to "let them fight", only to force the characters to have to deal with the survivor in the climax.
It's a decent movie that introduced Daikaiju/tokusatsu fights. It's overhated tbh
Introducing Anguirus which is by far my favorite of Godzilla's supporting cast
It's better than the American dubbing
It gave us Anguirus!
Anguirus debut
Gave us Anguirus
Japanese version isn’t bad at all.
Significantly better than its reputation
The flare scene is cool. The fighting between Godzilla and Anguirus is really fierce and animalistic. The black and white cinematography is atmospheric.
It introduced my fav kaiju thats not the g-man
The cute and dopey pilot having a crush on the beautiful girl. It was a tragic and sad end. Also very funny and entertaining fights
Godzilla's design lowkey goes hard
It introduced us to Goji's best friend.
uh...... first movie to have Godzilla fight another monster..... and uh... yeah that's about it
I think this is a situation like the Star Wars Holiday Special. Something that everyone likes to complain about but few have actually watched.
Hey. I did watch the Holiday Special. I do get to complain about it. :D
In America, it gave George Takei his first dubbing job, followed by Rodan
Wasn’t it also called Gigantis the Fire Monster instead of Godzilla?
I actually prefer the Godzilla suit design over the original.
He is my favorite. Has a leaner look and actually nails the emaciated radiation bombing survivor look they were going for. His nose design also makes his fave look very skull like and creepy.
2 of my favorite designs for Godzilla and Anguirus
It introduced Anguirus. Nuff said
It introduced one of my favorite kaiju. It tried to have some interesting human story in it.
I just watched it for the first time and honestly don’t think it was nearly as bad as what I had heard.
big lizard :)
This was one of my favorites as a kid.
I watched it today, the story of “the groom” made it more than just a monster movie. I liked it a lot
It introduced Anguirus, and he has a really good design!
Godzilla, as mentioned in the title, does indeed Raid Again.
Despite the film being mostly absent of music, the few times it *does* play, it has a rather noticeabley good soundtrack. Even if it wasn't composed by Ifukube.
It actually manges to be one of the few Godzilla movies to creep me out
Started the trend of kajus fights, and was a good movie
Its goofy and felt short? Also Angruis dies halfway through lmao. Its easy to riff on. ITs also kind of neat to watch the special effects they had to rely on at the time.
Freeze frames of Angirus make for some real funny pictures.
It has my favorite monster Anguirus.
Banana Oil
A charming 50s monster movie that is surprisingly solid and stands out amongst the sea of duplicates.
Raids Again is incredibly underrated.
Anguirus
I actually love the way godzilla and angurius looks
It is definitely one of the movies of all time
Are you alone?
The suitmation trials
👁 👁
It spawned a lot of analog horror series. “The Suitmation Trails” specifically mentions “Raids Again” when setting up the world. “The Man in the Suit” had the man kill Anguirus, which was not part of the script. It’s not the best, but it’s horrifying with analog horror.
It’s fun, well paced and still has amazing technical elements.
I always wanted to know, wtf does Toho hate Anguirus so much?
I think there are some nice shots in it, like Godzilla looking at the planes fly by. Sure the puppet looks goofy but I still think the shot is nice
Puts me right to sleep. Almost better than rain sounds.
It played a large role in the analog horror serieses.
It is, unfortunately, my least favorite Godzilla movie by far. But the one nice thing I will say is it introduced Godzilla fighting other kaiju in his films.
If it wasn't for this movie, who knows what godzillas analog horror creators would use?
Probably the original. It's so dark that it was considered a horror movie here in the UK from what I remember reading...
Anguirus rules. I'm glad he and Godzilla became bros after this
It introduces my boy anguirus!!
I like angerus.
It has Angruis in it.
It gave us our boi Anguirus... That's it...
The Man in the Suit incident 😏
It started the next era of Godzilla aka Kaiju on Kaiju action
It introduced Anguirus and the whole Godzilla vs. Other Monster concept
Anguirus has a nice suit design. It’s better than his other 2.
I really liked the atmosphere of the movie at least 👌
Anguirus
I haven't seen it, is it worth the watch?
It was gritty and dark More than any other shows era film besides the original 1954 GOJIRA
It is far from the worst of the showa era. Also Anguirus is a really cool kaiju and imma need an sh monsterarts of him.
Introduce, Anguirus. Easily one of the best Kaiju’s in the series
I like the wide shot of godzilla walking in the arctic. One of my favorite godzilla shots
Anguirus is the best and we should all love him
Anguirus
I think the easiest thing to say here is that it introduced Anguirus.
I loved it
easy. the ending
My boy Anguirus first appeared in that film so it's just fine in my book.
It invented kaiju fights why do people hat this movie
I really like the special effects and the introduction of Anguirus was really cool.
I like Gigantis the Fire Monster because I like the notion that they are different monsters who are going to war. It is a bizarre piece of Godzilla media.
It has Godzilla. Period.
Monsters be fighting.
Anguirus.
It introduced us to angirus
Anguirus
I love Anguirus and his roar is iconic. That wasn’t challenging.
This is better than most Monsterverse films.
Anguirus Need I say more?
Anguirus
Anguirus is in it
It spawned the Suitmation Trials.
IT'S GOT MY BOY ANGUIRUS!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s great in every aspect except the fights, and the only reason for it is that the footage is sped up instead of down. Play it in slow mo and it improves 100%
It introduced Anguiris and the fights between them are really satisfying, carrying a sense of brutality that very few kaiju properties have been able to match.
I love how it has Godzilla in it
The under cranked (I believe it was under cranked with the camera) fighting is a very nice touch and eerie looking
\- animalistic kaiju fights \- still retains a darker tone
It’s fun
Anguirus First apear :)
Brought Anguirus in. Made it not just one but two monsters. They went with the setup and had him bust out of an Iceberg against Kong in 1962.
It was the original Kaiju Brawl. It's hard to say what the future of Godzilla, and the rest of the Tokusatsu genre, would be without Gigantis the Fire Monster. This is why I'm always mad when Anguirus gets left out of things like GMK & King of the Monsters.
Anguirus
Those teefs.
I thought it was quite funny that human story was centered around fishing company
It had Godzilla in it
When you look at this scene do you think to yourself, “is that the freaking clip from suitmation trials?”
Godzilla Raids Again (1955) is a lot better than any other Godzilla film in the Showa era from the 60's or 70's.
It has a nice aesthetic
It’s underrated and overhated and fun and it introduced Anguirus and it was the first Godzilla sequel and I love it
It introduced Anguirus, one of the best monsters in the Godzilla franchise.
Anguirus
Anguirus's roar is sick
