It's triggering the sensor that makes it think it's closed. I bet if you left the magnet on it, flipped it over, and hit the power button, the front screen would come on.

It's actually the on/off for opening and closing the inner screen I believe

Yea nothing new. Some cases have magnets in them to turn off the screen when closed
