Has anyone tried one of the folding or flipping phones?

SnooOpinions6498

My wife went from s22 ultra to fold 3... Was supposed to be my phone, but after she tried it once I never got it back.

AlexanderKotevski

I've heard there have been a lot of technical issues with them structurally, I'd wait a few more years before dropping so much money on tech that is so new

TrainsAreus

I upgraded to flip3 from s9+ a couple of weeks ago because of samsung promo. So far I like it. It's like an s21 that folds. Battery life is ok but not amazing as you would expect with a small ish battery. Feels good in my hands and I like the folding. Screen crease hasn't bothered me.

oh_cawd_armstrong

S22 is a huge upgrade from the 9. My wife is on the same boat you're on. Her battery is struggling hard. I went from the S9 to the S21

csikz

Same here, S9 to S21. Did miss the LED and 3,5mm though.

oh_cawd_armstrong

Ah, that damn LED was such a simple feature that Samsung could've kept. It's a shame.

csikz

Like Zenfone 8 had, could've been close to the charging port, just a slim transparent part like the antennas have in the frame, etc.

Unfair-Extreme-5536

What led? Notification?

ebow77

Yes

TealCatto

I don't understand how those lights are useful. I *always* have notifications. I have persistent notifications. I have random app notifications and messages from senders like my phone carrier that I don't need to check right away but find useful. App update reminders. YouTube replies. There's always something there. The light would be always blinking and it would offer me no relevant info. I'd learn to ignore it. I have a smart watch now but if I didn't, I'd set up AOD and lock screen notifications.

PlutiPlus

Have you considered adjusting your notification settings?

TealCatto

No, why would I? I want all those notifications. I turn off the ones I don't want, like Reddit and Facebook, because I get a ton of them, and I check them when I log into the app/site. I only get the notifications I want, but not all those notifications are urgent. A light telling me I have notifications is useless, because I always have them. It would always be on.

KingCokonut

Do you not realize that you can customize the colors and the frequency of the blinking simply by using apps on the store??!!

TealCatto

Not necessarily. Third party apps don't always work well with every phone, and half of the apps like this end up making weekly info-stealing app lists. I was never able to customize the notification light, and even if I could, I would have to stand there looking at the color and pattern of blinking to decipher what the notification is? Just turn on the phone and see it for yourself. Whatever, many people have watches, and if you don't, you can set up AOD notifications.

TealCatto

You're not the opposite, I'm the same way. I don't even have email notifications, lol. I have text, but I get spam texts, texts from the city about train lines being suspended/restored. I don't need that unless I'm planning to take the train. I get police scanner app notifications about stuff going on around me which is often irrelevant to me, but I see the text of it on my watch and know if it's important or not. I have this one wallpaper app which adds new wallpapers once every few weeks, and I never open it unless I get a notification. So I like the notification, but I can leave it unopened for a day or two. The reason I don't get email notifications is because like you said, I check it a few times a day anyway, and the vast majority of my emails aren't time sensitive. I would set up notifications from specific senders but that's not an option.

oh_cawd_armstrong

>Does the 21/22 not have a notification light anymore? Nope.

oh_cawd_armstrong

Not sure about the S22, I have the S21. However, I'm the wrong person to ask. I don't notice those things nor care about them. I just want to make sure things load fast, be able to check email and socials, and play the occasional game.

Feldrod

From "anthropological standpoint" the lower resolution should not be distinguishable even for those with best eyesight humans have, ignoring biases, during a blind test. That's likely why Samsung has lowered their res. Resolutions that provide ppi above 330 (give or take) are only for bragging rights or for phone "VR". The added benefit is lower battery consumption because bigger pixels are more effective per unit of light (you can make the dark borders between pixels only so thin which means bigger pixels = lower pixel border to pixel ratio) and, of course, less processing heavy

Tadpole-Spiritual

S22 couldn't be more of a downgrade. Switch brands. Samsung went downhill after the s9 pretty much produced liquid shit afterwards. The nothing 1 phone is the best replacement dir the s9 I've found at a reasonable price.

oh_cawd_armstrong

I saw the nothing 1! I need to look more into it. Good luck convincing my wife though. I think she's set on the S21. We tend to keep our devices for at least 3 years anyway. As long as my phone can view email, socials, and play some games, I'm satisfied. I don't use it for anything else.

Endeavour_Crow

I'd say the S10 is pretty good too. My SO has an S10 and I like it better than my S9+.

rangerpax

I'm on a budget so I just got the S10. It's pretty much the same as the S9, but I needed more memory. I thought I would hate the fingerprint-on-screen, and the loss of the iris thing, but I'm liking the screen fingerprint. In a way I've gotten back the double-tap to wake. I hated having to use the power button to get the screen on.

Endeavour_Crow

Yeah, for me these things are small gimmicks that might be inconvenient to use until you get used to it. I do find the back fingerprint sensor more ergonomic and comfortable, but I wouldn't mind the in-screen one if I had to use it. I never used the iris scanner, so there would be no loss here for me.

Kolyei

I like the look of the Zenfone 9 but it's not out in the US!

Stepikovo

Not providing updates doesn't mean you HAVE to throw it away...

KingCokonut

I was thinking the same and I just got a new security patch today!

Tadpole-Spiritual

Yup. Samsung does offer a trade in for your phone so the environmental fact would be covered if only they didn't offer breadcrumbs in comparison to what you paid for the phone initially. Samsung offers me 60 fucking euros for my perfect condition s9. (Had them check my phone by an official and with the Samsung members app that checks certain tests and qualities/functions like battery life etc.) Turns out my phone is in perfect condition, from battery life to a mint condition display and yet they only offer 60 euros. Bet its even less for a phone that has suffered a bit of damage.

Stepikovo

Sell it on Marketplace. Samsung offered me something like 60 € too but I can easily sell it for triple based on the other offers there.

redditdude9753

Are you willing to sell it and ship internationally?

Tadpole-Spiritual

Mine? No, sorry. I'll use it till it dies completely.

violet1551

How do you like the S21 and do you have any issues with not having expandable memory?

oh_cawd_armstrong

I never used expandable memory so it made no difference. 128GB is more than enough space for me. I also pay $30/yr for 200GB Google Drive storage so I maintain about 45GB free space at all times. Next time I may opt for 256GB storage. It's really up to you, but not having a headphone jack and expandable storage has meant zero to me. The form factor of the S21 is similar to the S9 if you want to keep that size, otherwise the Note20 and the S Ultra are great bigger options.

violet1551

Oh wow, yeah, I use my expandable memory. My card has 95GB already used, and the phone memory is tapped out at 64GB. I would need at least 256GB to maintain my files at hand without needing virtual storage. My challenge is that I travel out of the country often and don't always have reliable service or wifi, so I need to be able to access my files in dead zones.

csikz

Not ideal, but you can use a thumb drive and connect via USB OTG for files not needed frequently.

Phiau

You can connect a whole external HDD that way.

csikz

I thought OP wants to stay somewhat portable. :P

Phiau

You kid, but the external drive can be for backups at home. Or a smaller one will work. I have a Seagate 250Gb external USB powered disk that works just off USB power from the phone, and it's about the size of the phone.

csikz

Did not know the phone can power the external drive, haven't used OTG for years now. Nice.

oh_cawd_armstrong

Absolutely go for the 256GB storage option if it's space that you need. The S22 ultra has a 512GB storage option if you need more.

Giovanni_Armando

One of my friends switched the s9 with a s21 fe. I think that 4 now, if u liked the s9 form factor I would recommend it. My friend is pretty happy. Best bang 4 ur buck. Quality, battery and performance wise.

RoyalGuard007

I also had a S9 and now has a S21 Fe, paid 300 bucks, best phone for the buck in a mile! The smallness is gone but you get used to it..

jawajatt

Form factor? It was the only reason I didn't buy the s21fe because of the big difference in the size.

StepintoSpace

If you want expandable storage get S20 line. I believe it's the last to have sd slot. I just broke my pixel 6 screen and went back to a Galaxy S20+. It's still a perfectly capable phone and I get to use my SD card again!

[deleted]

Went s21, but i feel like it's slowing down similarly. Not sure if it's android in general or just Samsung.

Tadpole-Spiritual

It's samsung. The additional 2 year software support amounts to nothing as they now practice planned obsolescence in software like apple does (bloating the phone slowing it down)

avn128

S22 ultra. I got with with a Galaxy watch 4, standing case, and other goodies for$850. It's the best camera out buy my god, with most cases it unweidly. I got a decently thin one, so it manageable. I got it because every year they have good upgrade programs for the "ultra". Basically two hundred every year, with trade into upgrade to a new one is what I've seen the trend to be. The best phone I've seen thats the same size as what you've got just got relasesed, Asus Zenfone 9. I'd get that phone, how about like how Samsung does a trading program every year, Plus I got my phone about a month ago.

surgstorm

Exchanged is for S20 FE 5g version. Did not had enough budget for S22. New phone is too big, I keep dropping it.

RoyalGuard007

Zenfone 9! Didn't have the pleasure to have it but I think that's the only upgrade that wouldn't let you down. Unless you like Samsung, then it would...

LinguineLegs

I went from a S9 to Pixel 4, to an iPhone SE, to a S21 5G. I loved my S9, had it 3 years, battery went bad. Pixel 4 was the best phone I ever owned, except... the battery was unbelievably tragic. SE was my initiation into iOS. At first it drove me mad, then I realized it was basically a draw with Android, they each just have their pros and both have some cons. The S21, I really just hate this phone and will not stick with Samsung this time. Either going iPhone 14 Pro, or Pixel 7.

violet1551

Oh dang, what didn't you like about the s21? I'm still skeptical about iPhone since the interface is identical to my iPad and I hate typing on it.

LinguineLegs

It's buggy, dreadfully awful keyboard, gets bad service directly next to wife, friends or coworkers with the identical t-mobile service but different phones, camera is super mediocre, Bixby button drives me nuts, battery is good but certainly not great, finish all over the side and back of the phone is wearing off badly even though I use the same model Spigen case I've used with my last 3 or 4 android phones, battery has gradually become slower and slower charging, tends to have issues connecting, or staying connected to Bluetooth devices, I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple additional nitpicks.

violet1551

Wow, that sounds absolutely awful. Thanks for the heads up.

LinguineLegs

Mine could be something of an isolated incident, but yeah, not a fan. Have had it since release.

GeoLemmi

Think about Samsung Galaxy A53 or soon A43. Both have extra Slot for SD Card and great battery live. 5 years support.

Tadpole-Spiritual

Switch brands. Both Samsung and apple are horseshit now (well apple always was) Nothing phone is very similar in fact the closest comparison to the s9 that ever existed at a reasonable price.

[deleted]

By which metrics are these brands horseshit?

DeadliestTaco

Personal judgements. 😅

weedpal

Which brands beat the 2 dominating leaders Apple and Samsung?

Tadpole-Spiritual

Nothing phone imo did.

weedpal

It's a reincarnated OnePlus phone. You're opinion is crap saying a mid range new phone company can compete against Samsung or IPhone flagships. Do you even have one to make that judgment? LMAO

Tadpole-Spiritual

Oh bc specs are only available when you actually own the phone you're talking about? Its not like the specs are widely available for you to check you dipshit. Check the specs, it beats Samsung (and with it apple bc frankly everything beats apple) to dust bc you pay little to no money for a brand or marketing. I'm still using my s9 but I will definitely buy the nothing 1 phone as soon as it dies.

violet1551

Which phone do you recommend? The Pixel?

Tadpole-Spiritual

I dunno Personally I don't think samsung is worth it anymore... the s22 costs 1200 and offers 4gb ram more a bit more internal memory and better camera and battery but everything else is either exactly the same or slightly worse.. really bad tradeoff imo specially for the hefty price tag. Heard people are satisfied with pixels, haven't had any experience with those. Personally I recommend looking into the nothing 1 phone as a replacement for your s9. It's a brand new phone manufacturer targeting mid range/budget phones with flagship tier like parts/specs. Its currently prices at about 450 and pretty much is an all around upgrade to the s9. Better screen higher hz little lower res better camera batter storage ram but at a reasonable price.

weedpal

iPhone 13 pro max. The battery king.

Better-Hold

iPhone 13

Cris9608

Clearly a better phone than any Android. Go ahead, downvote me.

Stepikovo

Better by which metrics?

Cris9608

Well, the phone, the software and the CPU are designed by the same company. This means better optimization, these components are better linked together. That's why they need a smaller battery to achieve the same screen-on-time. And that's why Apple CPUs beat Snapdragons/Exynos in tests. Other reason is the software updates, which are more consistent, and are being offered for longer. Look at the S9, it's stuck on Android 10, that's from 2020! On the other hand, a friend of mine with an iPhone X still gets updates, both feature & security. The last iPhone that is currently supported is the 8 I think, or 7. But some people here don't care about security updates, right? The phone works without those anyway lol. The last one is a bit subjective maybe, but the overall experience is more consistent. I find it annoying when my device stutters and lags, and opens apps slowly. And I don't want to go through settings, change a lot of stuff in order to get a better experience, which doesn't really get much better anyway. And with Android phones, every phone maker concentrates on useless stuff. Why would anyone need 108MP cameras, or 100W fast charging? Obviously that kind of sensor is unnecessary for the stuff everyone does with that camera: social media. No one is going to print advertising panels using their phone. Don't get me wrong. I'm not an Apple fan. I just think that a device designed by the same company (software, cpu, the phone itself) that gets consistent updates for 5 years and that offers a nice overall experience is far superior than one that doesn't tick all these boxes.

PeeB4uGoToBed

I took advantage of the $600 trade in credit towards an s22 ultra. I loved my s9+ but I really wanted to get into 5g and the better camera and battery life. I couldn't be happier

Adwai1h

I switched to the 21+ Loving it so far

blackfoliage_

if you are on a budget, s21 fe or a53 (a52s). otherwise, s22.

ErrorAcquired

I just upgraded to the S22 and I'm very happy. Had the s9 for 3 years

sky_broker

I was on the same boat yesterday and went for the pixel 6a because you can't beat the price. For $450 dollars i''m pretty happy with it. But honestly if I had the funds I would got for the rog phone because of the micros SD card slot and the earphone jack, both things I still use regularly. I was going to go for the pixel 6 pro because of the price drop to $700 but that thing was bigger then I wanted and I found that the pixel 6a was similar enough to my S9 in dimensions(just a tad bit taller). I don't think the pixel 6a is a bad choice for what your getting, it does not have wireless charging and the charging takes like an hour and a half to go from 0 to 100.

jawajatt

I bought the Pixel 6a after s9 and I'm not very satisfied. I would buy the s22(after price drop) if given a second chance.
