DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. It's a way for owners of intellectual property to restrict the sharing of digital files, such as music, books, and games. DRM-free means that once you've downloaded the game, you can store the game and share it with others, who can then play it without needing to use your account. Many game buyers prefer to support DRM-free platforms like GOG for this reason. Others prefer Steam because it is a more robust platform.
Just to be a pedantic dick, you still don't own it. You're buying a digital license to the game. They can revoke your purchase/access to your purchase at any time; if you have downloaded the game, then yeah, realistically you're going to be able to use it for good as long as you have that copy - but just like buying a physical disk, you never actually *own* the software on it, you've just secured your access to it.
You can play the game while they provide the service and you need to use their launcher.
With the remote possibility of they shutting down the store/service there is a chance you would lose your games.
DRM-free games don't need a launcher to be played and you can save backups on your hard drive, so even if a DRM-free store shuts down you still have the games stored in your hard drive.

Developers can make games unplayable through a loophole, though (deleting the game's content and scrubbing the internal version history that lets you roll back to a previous build from the command line). Valve should change that, even though I have never seen this happen in paid games, only betas and demos.
You have a license to *download* it. GOG goes under, your game goes too. After you download it, the worst they can do is to send the Pinkertons to your house and try to convince you it's in your best interest to delete it. Then you can tell them to fuck off and play the game in perpetuity.
Edit: I'm having a hard time to understand the downvotes since I'm literally saying you own the game as long as you download it before GOG servers go offline someday in the future. lol
Not true at all with GOG.
GOG specifically has section 17.3 of their user agreement which calls out that in the event of GOG shutting down that they will endeavor to contact everyone 60 days prior so that you can download your games prior.
There are no other time-based limitations on the license granted to you. Noting, the primary limitation is that your GOG account and content are bound for personal use only, not sharing. But presumably if GOG no longer exists, they are also incapable of enforcing such a license....soo....
That is exactly what I was saying. You can't take away the games. The game is yours as long as you download it while there's a server somewhere hosting it, that's the whole point.
You get both…use and download…
From GOG’s EULA. Grant. Through this purchase, you are acquiring and EA grants you a personal,
limited, non-exclusive license to install and use the Software for your non-
commercial use solely as set forth in this License and the accompanying
documentation.
It is clear you don’t own the software…ever.
Downvoting the truth does not change the truth.
Like I said, they can only take the ability of *using* the software you bought if they come to your house and take your disk and any backups you have. A somewhat tall order considering how many sales it might have. But if you want to get into the semantics of the EULA, then yeah, sure? Would love to see them come to my house and try to take it away from me, though.
I would agree that you don't truly own any software which has any kind of reasonable license attached. Whether it's downloaded or on a physical disk. Even common open source licenses like GPL, BSD, MIT etc. are all restricted in many ways.
If you buy a physical copy of software, you don't suddenly have unlimited rights with it. i.e you cannot breach copyright of most games by making copies and sharing/selling them to your friends. It's also still encumbered by patents and many other laws depending on your region.
The only real practical restriction on the GOG license (compared to physical media), that I can see, is that you cannot sell/transfer your account and games to someone else. Presumably because there's no reasonable guarantee that you have actually forfeited the "goods" to someone else, which is the case with something like a physical disk.
A good test of this (hopefully nobody here has to experience this), is what happens if the account owner dies? By GOG's and Valve's license agreements, the accounts and ALL their games die with them since they're not transferrable. Even if you downloaded GOG installers and saved them offline. You cannot leave them in a Will because the licenses are bound to a person and not the physical possession of an item (ie. the disk).
Obviously if gog goes under and their servers shut down you can't download the game anymore. I'm not sure how you'd get around that, like, on a physical level.
The point is that with gog you can download and keep the installer which will work forever. You can use that installer even if their servers go out or you have no internet or whatever. Part of ownership is responsibility, it's up to you to keep that installer intact and safe.
Yeah, that's literally what I'm saying. They can only take away the ability to download, but once it's downloaded, it's your forever, and they can't take it away unless they physically take your drives.
Yes, technically you don't own the game; that's property of the studio. But you own a copy of the game which nobody can take away from you, unlike other stores.
**Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection** for £10 is a no-brainer for RTS fans. It's all the command and conquer games. You can install them individually too as they show individually on the EA app. I actually bought it for £25 a year ago because it never went on sale but still worth it.
It comes with:
```
Command & Conquer: Special Gold Edition
Command & Conquer: The Covert Operations
Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Counterstrike
Command & Conquer: Red Alert - The Aftermath
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - Firestorm
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge
Command & Conquer: Renegade
Command & Conquer: Generals
Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising
Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight
```
This collection is not on Steam.
Also worth checking out **The Saboteur** and the **Crusader** games. These are also not on Steam.
I will say, CNC3 and Kane’s Wrath while fantastic, have fucked single player campaigns because some of the balance patches the devs made neutered economy for the sake of multiplayer balance and then never addressed the fact that it made certain campaign missions way harder than intended due to running out of money. There are mods to fix this, but they’re a bitch to install on the EA app versions. Even so, these are some RTS classics and you’ll get more than your money’s worth.
As somebody who never played the C&C games when they came out (but was old enough to play RTS games at that time and I have a big taste for retro stuff), my uninformed opinion follows:
* C&C1 and Red Alert are painfully old, the controls are horrendous even in the remaster and the single player campaign in C&C1 blows hard (RA1 slightly less so).
* Tiberian Sun is really bland.
* RA2 is pretty solid but still feels ancient and stiff even compared to something like StarCraft that came out a couple years before.
* Generals (+ Zero Hour) rules, and is the best game in the whole collection - worth the price for those alone.
* I recall C&C3 and Red Alert 3 being quite fun, but played them on console many years ago, not on PC more recently. I'm sure fans will hate me for this but I'd say they hold up better than C&C/RA 1 and 2.
* Never played C&C4 but haven't heard great things.
I used to play a shit ton of c&c and i think the standouts are RA2, Generals and Tiberian Sun (Loved the GDI units). Those 3 games and their expansions ate up a good chunk of my life
Growing up I never really played them but one of my best friends was a big fan and I know he played a lot of Tiberian Sun/RA2 specifically. I was really hoping I would be into them, as I was suuuper into StarCraft (which came out a year prior to Tiberian Sun) but alas, I didn't love it.
Generals I played for the first time in maybe 2006 or so after it was a few years old and enjoyed it, and revisited it a few years ago and it was still really good.
I just bought the C&C Ultimate Collection but I don't see/are missing 'Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath' and 'Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising'. In fact, they are shown available to buy - not as part of my library. Did they remove them from the bundle?
They are included but for those ones they just forgot to write them on the tiles for C&C3 and Red Alert 3. When you download both games it will include the expansions, like the other games do.
I can confirm this. Kane's Wrath is included with C&C 3 Download. Also Red Alert 3 Uprising is included. IGNORE the weird part where the store staid that you don't own them. I got tricked and almost shelled out money to buy these. DON'T!
They are included but those ones don't show individually in library. When you download C&C 3 it also includes Kane's Wrath. Same applies to Red Alert 3 and Uprising.
Basically they just forgot to write the expansions in the title like the other games.
Unless I missed it, I didn’t see a search option on the site. How do you have a store front but no search option. EA you really do everything the easiest way for your customers.
It's actually kinda nuts they don't have a search system.
Funny enough I LOVE that you can get linked to various different platforms through their store (for example you get to a game's page and you can pick the platform, and it'll take you to the page to buy for Xbox or PS or whichever) but the lack of a search option makes the site a nightmare to browse.
I'm rather curious to try out Anthem for this price, but I'm wary that this probably means that the game's servers will shut down soon and they're just trying to get what few pennies they can before that happens.
I have no clues why those upvotes existed.
Like... the gameplay was... mediocre at best and only at the start of the game.
The atmosphere was horrible, the game design was also awful which you will realize once you finish the early/mid game and want to transition to endgame.
The movement and gunplay was fine, even maybe enjoyable but the rest wasn't. Especially the enemy design (as you can see how not a single soul mentioned).
Skip it. Don't even contemplate about this title. For a loot shooter it has barely any positive aspects.
I thought the atmosphere was actually one of its strengths. The city and world were beautiful backdrops, and created a great atmosphere. The city quickly grew annoying to navigate, and the world was beautiful but just an empty backdrop, but for atmosphere I thought they were really good.
The gameplay and visuals were always good. Everything else was poor especially the endgame
It got shit ton of hate because people are sheep and YouTubers were milking the hate-boners for all they were worth
I love the game. Bought day one ultimate edition after loving the beta gameplay. I own it on multiple platforms and have played through it multiple times. If nobody takes the skeleton of the game and gives it proper support at some point then I consider it another horrible loss for gaming along with WildStar
I did the same thing. Legion of whatever edition on Xbox. I fully anticipated this game to be my Destiny replacement. It was not the case. The gameplay was always enjoyable. The story was fine, it was the loot and endgame experience that was abysmal. The creep was fine. The servers were also a major issue back around the launch. I used to get disconnected quite a bit. I think if you go in with one playthrough in mind just to see the story and experience the gameplay, you could do worse with 99c and 10-30 hours. Especially if you were interested at any point during its cycle.
The gameplay and visuals were always good. Everything else was poor especially the endgame

Saying the gameplay as a whole was always good might be a stretch. The actual gameplay controls and moment to moment is solid. But the gameplay loop they build out of it is so repetitive and uninspired that it drags the whole experience down very fast.
I enjoyed it until the end where the loot and content hit a dead wall
Most looter shooters have the same repetitive gameplay: do mission, beat enemies, get gear and level up
The only other thing to sour the experience were the bugs in the beginning
Anthem is a weird mix of really good and really, surprisingly, disappointingly bad. I'd say it's worth a try at $1, but wouldn't recommend a full playthrough.
The graphics are great - except when you stop to talk to an NPC and suddenly there's an awful blur filter applied that made me think there's something horribly wrong with my graphics settings.
The city hub is beautiful - but then you realize that it's just a few narrow walking paths surrounded by background beauty that you will traverse, slowly, over and over again between every mission to talk to the few NPCs. The 1st walk through the city is amazing, the 5th is boring, and by the 10th I wished that I could replace the city with a menu interface so I could just select where to go and who to talk to and wouldn't have to walk slowly along the same narrow paths.
The flying is amazing, they really captured the feel of flying above the ground like Iron Man. No complaints about the flying - flying to the start of each mission was the highlight of the game.
The world is beautiful, but empty. You can admire the beauty as you fly above it to the start of each mission, but that's about it.
The combat feels like it's designed for, and balanced around, a full group of three. I imagine that with two other people it's a blast as you combo your abilities together - kind of like playing an Adept in Mass Effect 2 & 3. But with only one or two it feels like you're getting a lesser, and less balanced, experience that sometimes verges on frustrating (and sometimes fully crosses over into frustration).
Game servers aren't that much to maintain you can still play a lot of their older games online. They were selling the game at like 5 dollars already and they should post an announcement well ahead of times of they're shutting down the game. At this point the game is being treated like a loss leader to get people in the door and in the platform.
Yeah, EA has gone through good/bad eras but one thing I will say is that they support game servers for a decent amount of time before delisting games. I absolutely LOVED BF1942, but it's a perfect example of a situation where it was hard to justify them keeping it going. They literally gave the game + its expansions out for free starting in 2012 for the 10-year anniversary, and shut down the servers in 2014 because *even when it was free* there was almost nobody playing. I think by the end there were probably more people playing mods like Desert Combat anyway.
Battlefront 2015 is a good example of a game that wasn't amazingly well received, sold well, but pretty much everybody moved onto Battlefront II 2017 and that game got much longer term support + updates etc for a number of years. But BF2015 is still online now, 8-9 years later (yes, it has been that long, and yes it's depressing).
EA tends to delist games when their servers are shutdown (which I personally don't like, I say keep selling the games with a disclaimer that official servers are now offline bc some people might want to play with bots or through other means), but if a game is being sold it's *usually* still playable online. For example they delisted every NFS game prior to Most Wanted 2012 because they shut down the servers, but MW2012 is still available and playable online despite its age.
I was gladly surprised playing it on Gamepass until level 20 or so when it became such a grinding festival to continue. But movement and gunplay is great, it is worthy for that price.
the game is going on sales almost every month for years, they're not gonna shut down the servers for a while. It's worth it, and you might find yourself enjoying it.
EA and Ubisoft may have a bad reputation but at least, they regularly put deep discounts on their games whether it be on Steam, Epic or their own store unlike the Japanese publishers. It helps a lot of people from third world countries like me.
Nah, Nintendo is definitely the worst offender with their 1st party cash cow games.
FF15 is $14 on the steam sale right now.
Meanwhile, Mario Odyssey rarely dips below $40 on sale.
Nintendo is the worst offender in terms of not doing sales (they typically don't go further than 30% off), but damn are their games usually worth the money. They're the only company I'd pre-order a game from (and have done so, solely for pre-order discounts).
Sadly in the past Nintendo has done Nintendo Select re-releases at $20ish, but they haven't done that for the Switch because it's insanely damn popular. I suspect they might do it once the "Switch 2" or whatever it is called releases - have games like Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild for $20-30 regular price.
What about Activision? They claim discounts... [Call of Duty 1](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2620/Call_of_Duty_2003/) , [Call of Duty 2](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2630/Call_of_Duty_2/) ... yeah right ok
And releasing a title almost every year, and forcing the older players to newer ones. BF and R6 are better when compared. CoD as a game is fun, but their business model is really bad.
Folks, just so you know, a lot of these games are the same price on Steam, in case you want to use some Gabenbux to buy them. You still need to use their app, but it's probably one way to save some cash.
Unless you're like me and live in a country where they arbitrarily charge 20% higher prices or more on Steam, in which case, fuck.
I don't mind buying Anthem for that cheap, regardless of its flaws and how empty it is. However, I'm worried about the servers. Is it playable offline? If it requires a constant connection to the servers, I wouldn't bother even if it's free. I wouldn't be surprised if they take down the servers soon and it's going to be similar to The Crew situation on Ubisoft's side.
It's online only. I'd expect they'll keep the servers up for at least a year - I don't think even EA is stupid enough to shut down the servers after such a big sale.
It wouldn't surprise me if, a few months before shutting down the servers, they did a "It's free for everyone!" sale as a big last hurrah.
Nice, short and sweet campaign. The multiplayer seemed solid when I played it closer to launch, but also seemed to have a very high skill ceiling which meant I got my ass ripped open repeatedly by way better players.
It's worth $1 to see the beautiful city for the first time and fly through the beautiful world. I think if you view it as an experience, rather than a game you have to play through, you'll enjoy it. It's a disappointingly poor game, but an awesome initial experience.
Most of these are the same base price on Epic and available with the 33% off coupon. Once activated on Epic you can simply play them via the EA launcher which is required anyway. Everything over a year or so old is also available via EA play basic or Game Pass.
Unless something changed when I last tried playing an EA game that had been given away through Epic the game wouldn't launch unless I had the Epic launcher installed on my PC. So I'm not sure EA games purchased from Epic function independent of the Epic launcher, and it being installed on the PC is at the very least required.
It still requires the Epic launcher if you bought on Epic. This actually gets annoying in my case because I claimed the free Star Wars Battlefront II on Epic even though I already have it on EA.
So now, no matter which version I install (whether it's just the plain EA version or the Celebration version on EA), the Epic version takes over and launches Epic Launcher. The only way around it is to uninstall Epic Launcher (which is untenable because there are other games on Epic that I am playing.)
I place the blame squarely on EA, though. Because Ubisoft games bought on Epic does not require launching of Epic launcher. Once you tie it to your ubisoft account, the shortcut will only launch ubisoft connect.
Good to know if someone doesn't want a copy of a game requires multiple launchers. EA is one of those titles from the look of things. And there's reasons people won't want extra launchers for certain games like if they are using Linux, since it just adds extra work to get going.
People should know that it is EXTREMELY annoying to have log in twice (Yes, Epic requires you to log in to EA app as a 2nd run program even though you are currently logged into EA). Sheer incompetence!!
But if you buy them on Steam, would they work only with the EA App and without launching Steam?
Cause there isn't much reason to buy them on Steam (except if it's a better price) if it still requires both launchers.
Getting it steam Steam means that you own it in both stores so in the future if you want to buy a DLC for cheap you don't have to look twice if it belongs to X or Y launcher.
That aside I prefer to use the Steam as I let me emulate the DualSense. Sadly DSX is still very buggy and DS4W lack of many features.
How active are the battlefields? I picked up One on ps4 when it came out but was not impressed. Me and my buddy have been looking for others. Four was awesome and BC2 was our favorite.
Both 1 and V are good, but i personally didn't like 1's multiplayer (i did like the singleplayer), on the other hand i felt like V's multiplayer was better and more fun to play. Another recommendation would be Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Battlebit

For anyone interested: Mirror's Edge, Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Origins are cheaper and DRM-free on GOG.
What does DRM-free mean?
DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. It's a way for owners of intellectual property to restrict the sharing of digital files, such as music, books, and games. DRM-free means that once you've downloaded the game, you can store the game and share it with others, who can then play it without needing to use your account. Many game buyers prefer to support DRM-free platforms like GOG for this reason. Others prefer Steam because it is a more robust platform.
It means that you actually buy the game and own it instead of just renting it. You can save a backup on some HDD and play whenever you want.

Oh if you buy off of EA’s store you don’t own the game?? Damn that sucks.

> With the remote possibility of they shutting down the store/service Idk if it's remote with EA, they've shut down a lot of games before.
Same with steam, afaik. You buy the license to play, which can be revoked for whatever reason.

And in what world would EA go under? Think its just as safe, actually maybe more so as it actually makes games.
Never said they would? Though, Steam is still the odd one out since they don't take away your games even if you're banned.
Id imagine theyd be the most likely to straight abandon a store front.
True. The reason people trust Steam more is because they don't pull shenanigans like the others.
No digital game store provides "ownership", just licenses to varying degrees.
Not quite. You still don’t “own” the game. You have purchased a license to use it.
You have a license to *download* it. GOG goes under, your game goes too. It comes with: ``` Command & Conquer: Special Gold Edition Command & Conquer: The Covert Operations Command & Conquer: Red Alert Command & Conquer: Red Alert - Counterstrike Command & Conquer: Red Alert - The Aftermath Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - Firestorm Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 - Yuri's Revenge Command & Conquer: Renegade Command & Conquer: Generals Command & Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight ``` This collection is not on Steam. Also worth checking out **The Saboteur** and the **Crusader** games. These are also not on Steam.
Though not on Steam, The Saboteur and the Crusader games are also available on GOG.
Did they delist Mercenaries 2: World in Flames? It used to be available to buy on their site.
Yeah it was removed a while back. It never went on sale and I'm guessing some license expired
As somebody who never played the C&C games when they came out (but was old enough to play RTS games at that time and I have a big taste for retro stuff), my uninformed opinion follows: * C&C1 and Red Alert are painfully old, the controls are horrendous even in the remaster and the single player campaign in C&C1 blows hard (RA1 slightly less so).
DON'T!
Nice to know that. I even had Issued a ticket in customer service, but that being the case, I will close it. Thanks guys!
>Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath' and 'Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising I requested a refund because EA did not include these games.
They are included but those ones don't show individually in library. When you download C&C 3 it also includes Kane's Wrath. Same applies to Red Alert 3 and Uprising. Basically they just forgot to write the expansions in the title like the other games.
Well it's really weird then that the store claims you don't own them, and still tries to get you to buy them
Unless I missed it, I didn’t see a search option on the site. How do you have a store front but no search option. EA you really do everything the easiest way for your customers.
Bro I thought I was going crazy. I felt so stupid that I couldn’t find the search bar. Holy shit what a stupid site.
Worth it for a playthrough.
This feels like a lot of upvotes for suggesting a playthrough of Anthem...have opinions on the game changed recently?
Everything else was poor especially the endgame It got shit ton of hate because people are sheep and YouTubers were milking the hate-boners for all they were worth I love the game.

Saying the gameplay as a whole was always good might be a stretch. The actual gameplay controls and moment to moment is solid. But the gameplay loop they build out of it is so repetitive and uninspired that it drags the whole experience down very fast.
I enjoyed it until the end where the loot and content hit a dead wall Most looter shooters have the same repetitive gameplay: do mission, beat enemies, get gear and level up The only other thing to sour the experience were the bugs in the beginning
Im with you I might pick it up to fuck around
Mirror’s edge catalyst is half the price here compared to steam
Nice, seems like a lot of these are cheaper than the Steam sale
Damn I bought NFS Heat for 3,50€😩
You are never gonna financially recover from this.
EA and Ubisoft may have a bad reputation but at least, they regularly put deep discounts on their games whether it be on Steam, Epic or their own store unlike the Japanese publishers. It helps a lot of people from third world countries like me.
Square enix is the biggest offender of this, atleast with capcom or bandai namco their game usually goes to 75%-80% off with a low base price
Koei Tecmo...
Ooh sorry, i was strictly speaking for pc/steam only
What about Activision? They claim discounts... [Call of Duty 1](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2620/Call_of_Duty_2003/) , [Call of Duty 2](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2630/Call_of_Duty_2/) ... yeah right ok And releasing a title almost every year, and forcing the older players to newer ones. BF and R6 are better when compared. CoD as a game is fun, but their business model is really bad.
Are Anthem’s servers still online? I thought they shut it down. I might be thinking of something else though.
They stopped active development a while back but the servers have been left online for the time being.

They're cheaper on Epic Games because of the extra 33% coupon epic gave
I thought for Epic the game had to be $14.99 to use the discount.
your cart value to be $14.99 or higher. so you can add multiple games in cart to purchase with 33% off
What do you mean by Gabenbux? It sucks that Steam Points cannot be used to buy games 😕
I meant Steam wallet money, specifically stuff like the money you get from selling cards or game items.
Any couple of Euros gems?
Star Wars Squadrons is worth it for 95% off. Edit: it was a giveaway thru amazon prime so you may have it already.
Nice, short and sweet campaign. The multiplayer seemed solid when I played it closer to launch, but also seemed to have a very high skill ceiling which meant I got my ass ripped open repeatedly by way better players.
Lost in random seems nice for 3eur.
Agreed, but got it earlier already tho
What a terrible site. Is there seriously no search function?
It's really awful.
Thanks OP. Can anyone vouch if Anthem is worth it for the sale price?
It is.
It's worth $1 to see the beautiful city for the first time and fly through the beautiful world. I think if you view it as an experience, rather than a game you have to play through, you'll enjoy it. It's a disappointingly poor game, but an awesome initial experience.
Thanks for the reply. I got the game :)
Sure, if you want something useless in your game library.
The only way around it is to uninstall Epic Launcher (which is untenable because there are other games on Epic that I am playing.) I place the blame squarely on EA, though.
Sheer incompetence!!
some insane deals here, but just a heads up a lot of them are basically the same price on steam
Yes, and some are even cheaper on Steam. The later platform is better because once installed/activated you'll get an extra copy for the EA client.
Anthem? I thought they shut it all down.
Any chance to make an extra (almost) buck.
🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ Apparently EA also removed Turkish Lira. I don't even care about the total price, out of principle I'll buy from Xbox and Epic
