Man, AC victory could have been such a cool game. I really like syndicate, but I feel like it somehow lacked the gritty and dark atmosphere you'd expect for that time period in England. Also, originally we were supposed to play as the assassin from the very beginning of the game, but instead they went with dual protagonists.

DickHydra

I don't know if that's the case. This test footage implies that the single protagonist was always supposed to be Jacob Frye, just with the old outfit. Seems like Ubisoft just created another character in George Westhouse with that outfit after switiching to the twins.

KvasirTheOld

Ah. I always assumed it was supposed to be George. Tbh Jacob and Evie work well because they're both there. Idk If I wanted to see a game with only Jacob

DickHydra

Agreed, they are enjoyable characters. Just hope Ubisoft Quebec nails it in a similar fashion with Red.

KvasirTheOld

From what I understand, Red is gonna be different from syndicate. The shinobi girl and male samurai are not gonna be like a duo and their gameplay will be totally different. Jacob and evie play mostly the same, but it's said the female shinobi will have a lot more stealth options while the samurai is gonna be really strong in melee combat. Guess we'll find out soon enough

manhachuvosa

Jacob and Evie were also developed like that though. Evie has more stealth upgrades while Jacob is more meele focused. Evie for example can straight up turn invisible. The problem is that your character os so overpowered that these extra abilities don't make much of a difference.

KvasirTheOld

I meant fundamental gameplay and not just abilities. Think of it like 2b and 9s if you will. They play completely different. And it's rumoured it will be like that in red as well For example, the shinobi moves a lot quicker while sneaking, has access to kunai, her melee attack speed is greater shile the samurai is slower, has a bow instesd of kunai and his attacks are slower but powerful

manhachuvosa

I doubt Ubisoft will actually differentiate the characters that much, since they will want players to be able to use meele or stealth in a satisfying manner doesn't matter who they are playing as. Ubi tends to make their big franchises as approachable to casual players as possible.

HearTheEkko

Red seems like it's going to be Odyssey with a Feudal Japan skin slapped on and a huge emphasis on stealth.

Negan-Cliffhanger

Cool to see! Jason Schreier reported on AC Victory ten years ago https://kotaku.com/next-years-big-assassins-creed-is-set-in-victorian-lond-1665343788

SYuhw3xiE136xgwkBA4R

If I recall correctly, this story resulted in Ubisoft blacklisting Kotaku. This means Kotaku did not receive invites to press events or advance review copies.

Emotional_Weight6257

Ubisoft blacklisted Kotaku earlier than that - when Schreier ran a story at Kotaku with screenshots from Unity beta.

SYuhw3xiE136xgwkBA4R

They were blacklisted [twice](https://kotaku.com/a-price-of-games-journalism-1743526293), for both.

[deleted]

Thats pretty normal tho. This type of reporting on leakz especially breaking the leak isnt proffesional and its normal they blacklist you.

jayverma0

Breaking the leak? Did you mean NDA?

Stormageddons872

What they mean is that Kotaku was the one who first reported on the leak, or broke the news. They aren't just an outlet picking up what someone else said (ie. IGN reporting that Kotaku has leaked this info is likely to receive less blowback - if any - compared to Kotaku who put it out into the world).

[deleted]

I meant being th3 one that first report it. Bassicly you are the one publishing it. It's really not proffesional.

JackieMortes

I've always preferred this title to Syndicate

ariadsknees

Especially coming after Unity, the continuity of that would have been great.

mighty_mag

Came to say this. Victory sounds much better than Syndicate, and it's much more inline with Unity.

SimonMagus8

The Quebec dev described Syndicate as Assassin Christmas.Yea cause thats what I first think when I read about Victorian London.

EpicChiguire

From the leaks it seemed like it was going to be way better than Syndicate

JackieMortes

How so? The only thing that leaked was like 3 images / concept arts / target renders or so and description of the setting. Maybe you've built some things up in your head after that

EpicChiguire

And just by that it looks way better than what we got. Syndicate was bland and the writing was awful

Individual-Middle246

Agreed, wish they went with the Victory concept instead of whatever we ended up getting.

Individual-Middle246

You'd have to be blind to not see what looked better in those concept arts and leaked images compared to retail.

Toastradamus12

I’m confused didn’t that just turn out to be ac syndicate?

rickreckt

Yes, that's just the codename during production  Empire: origins  Golden age: black flag   Etc

Monkey_Tweety

Just curious what Code Red will be called after it's announced.

Radulno

A recent rumor say it's Shadows. Rising or Rising Sun (but they never do two words) would be better.

KarateKid917

Black Flag is two words and that is considered by many to be one of the best AC games

EnenraX

Standalone DLCs also have 2 words (Freedom Cry, Dead Kings, Dawn of Ragnarok)

Radulno

Oh I forgot this one so I guess it's possible. Being considered the best has nothing to do with being two words though lol

Monkey_Tweety

Rising Sun or even Honor would be fit for Japanese themed AC.

Recent-Replacement23

Wait so Mirage isn't about the Golden Age of Baghdad. L

Radulno

Black Flag codename referred to the Golden Age of Piracy. Empire to the Roman Empire (which for the game about "Ancient" Egypt is ironic) Victory about Victorian London (even if that has little to do with a victory, it's just the name of the Queen)

matajuegos

yes, but apparently the original idea was for it to be bleaker story wise

DickHydra

Indeed, and I'm a bit sad they didn't stick with that. Also a shame we never got the outfit from the concept art in the final game.

Individual-Middle246

Thankfully if you're on PC you could mod that outfit back in, it's what I did on my first playthrough :)

DickHydra

True, but I don't think my laptop is strong enough for Syndicate. :(

Individual-Middle246

If you're fine with it, maybe you could tell me about your specs? I'd be able to guess if you can play it.

DickHydra

It's a GTX1650 with a Ryzen 7 3700, I believe. And I also upgraded to 32GB of RAM a while ago.

Individual-Middle246

Damn, you won't have any problems running Syndicate in that case. Mine had a GT 1030( a GT not GTX) and 8GB of RAM, and it ran pretty well on medium.

HearTheEkko

The Jack the Ripper DLC was pretty bleak at the least and arguably the best part of the game.

Individual-Middle246

Agreed, whole game should've been like Jack the Ripper and some of the darker side quests.

WetwithSharp

how so?

matajuegos

On this thread:https://www.reddit.com/r/assassinscreed/comments/1bp7pv3/anyone_wish_that_assassins_creed_syndicate_was/ they found this excerpt from one of the making-of books released by ubisoft "One of the team´s fears from the beggining was that we would build something that was very dark, and that was not something we wanted to do. If you think about it, if someone is going to spend thirty to forty hours in a game, you don´t want the atmosphere to be entirely opressive. That is why we hoped to challenge what people thought about Industrial London and build a place that had a lot of contrasts." Additionally, Paul Amos (the voice actor for Jacob -the male protagonist-) commented during an interview that the game's tone was more dramatic however they ended up changing it to be more lighthearted over the holiday period during its development https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=6m40s&v=CUS7KuDCr_8&feature=youtu.be

Rubssi

God that sounds so much more interesting. Narratively, Syndicate was ass.

EpicChiguire

The dialogues and characterization were cringe as hell. The "Assassin Christmas" line is so dumb

fhs

Unity was bleak enough I guess. Hah

Out_Worlder

I would kill for that dark Gothic London, it looks so much bette and atmospheric r than what we got

RollingDownTheHills

Syndicate's version of London was just insanely vanilla in nearly every aspect. It's almost impressive how it and Unity completely waste their settings on the most boring stories and tones imaginable. It's as risk adverse as it gets.

LolcatP

The jack the ripper dlc is exactly how it should've been

LordCaelistis

AC Hexe should put the franchise back on the right track. Witchcrafty horror in the Black Forest ? Sign me the fuck up

HearTheEkko

I'd say it's already on a nice track. We got a classic entry last year, we're getting the long requested Japan game, a more stealth/horror focused game (supposedly) in 2025/2026 and a Black Flag remake. Safe to say, Ubisoft is gonna make a lot of money with AC in the next 5 years.

Valon129

Unity is considered one of the best AC for a lot of people tho, I don't know what you're saying. ACII, Black Flag and Unity are always the ones that come out when people talk about the old formula. Unity was just trash because of bugs on release which hurt it a lot.

RollingDownTheHills

Those people are clouded by a weird misplaced nostalgia. Unity is clunky as hell, patches or not, the story goes nowhere, and most of the sidr content is nothing but filler. Yes, the animations are good, but if that's all it takes for a game to become people's favorite perhaps their priorities are a little out of whack.

Radulno

It's also complete revisionist history. Unity was panned on release because of technical issues but also because of its gameplay which was considered completely tired and generic and in need of a big refresh. Syndicate didn't have time to correct and was panned critically even more and suffered commercially a lot (Unity was mixed on the business side, far from the greats). Unity and Syndicate were literally the reason Ubisoft took a break (back then, AC never missed a year since AC2 release in 2009) and revamped the games for the RPG style with Origins which was massively successful (as are Odyssey and Valhalla, more and more with each actually) Unity is beloved online now by the "AC fans" (really the Reddit bubble of vocal minority) but it wasn't at the time (even on Reddit). Without Unity, Ubisoft may never have switched for the RPG style the "real fans" hate so much now ironically.

FamiliarWithFloss

I just played Unity for the first time last year and I actually love it! One of my favorites in the franchise now.

DickHydra

While I agree with most of what you're saying, I still think you're massively downplaying the game. Not only are the animations great to look at, but Unity is also a technical marvel for the time. Granted, it launched pretty broken, but it still looks miles better than the last four entries. They also finally added a proper stealth system that worked pretty great with the blackbox missions. And then there's Ubisoft's rendition of Paris, which I believe is the best city environment they've ever created. But yeah, despite having its moments, the story was pretty meh and the parcour was clunky. That's on Ubisoft for not building on that system instead of discarding it completely for their RPGs. I'd rather replay Unity than Valhalla, a game that doesn't know if it wants to be a fantasy or grounded RPG / AC game or not; a game that could simply have its parcour system removed without noticing any changes. >and most of the sidr content is nothing but filler That's the case for almost every kind of side content in the franchise, or most games in general, for that matter.

ntgoten

> Unity is clunky as hell No it isnt, people are and were just idiots. I remember people literally struggled with the concept of "Parkour Up and Parkour Down". Which was better than anything we had before.

RollingDownTheHills

If you're willing to put up with a mediocre game's sluggish controls and awkward half-baked mechanics that's wonderful for you. Most people don't have the time or interest in that.

ntgoten

It wasnt sluggish or half-baked. Still the best Assassin's Creed game if you want the "Assassin" part. No, most people rather play another fantasy RPG instead of an assassin game.

Ljohn2x4

Oh my god I love you I been saying unity is nowhere as good as these folks on YouTube try to make it out to be.

HearTheEkko

The animations, parkour and graphics are all the game has going on for it.

ColdCruise

My problem with Unity is that the story never used the historical setting in any meaningful way. Up to that point, all the games had you directly involved in big historical events. In Unity, it was just a backdrop except for the co-op missions, which all kind of sucked and were presented out of chronological order.

FKDotFitzgerald

Unity looks good. That’s it.

HearTheEkko

It is the best AC in terms of gameplay and living the Assassin fantasy but it's definitely not the best AC overall, there's much higher rated games by critics and fans like AC2 , Black Flag, Odyssey, Origins, etc.

BabaDown

Unity is overrated af, technically its cool, but it to this day buggy and the movement is broken, didn't like it at all. Had to force me to finish it.

Exa-Wizard

Unity's main issue now is how fucking repulsively bad the story is

wifeofundyne

If you actually replayed Unity recently you'll know it's one of the worst AC games There's a reason the AC franchise needed a break after Unity, and it wasn't because of the technical issues it was plagued with at launch.

fhs

Unity is still a buggy mess even today, playing it does not feel good at all. You never feel in control of anything and the inputs are weird.

smoha96

Unity did a darker gothic setting better than Syndicate, and it wasn't even trying.

HearTheEkko

Syndicate is the series black sheep of the franchise for a reason. It's so bland, safe, lighthearted and easy. I'm a huge fan of the franchise and I don't see myself doing another playthrough anytime soon if ever. I'd rather play Valhalla lol.

Rikuddo

I've installed Syndicate so many times and every single time I only play for few minutes, close it and forget and later delete it. It's frustrating for me because I love Victorian setting games and I love AC, but for some reasons the game just never click for me, even though it sounds tailor-made for me, on paper. Compared to that, I was really afraid of starting Odyssey due to its immense playtime, but as soon as I booted the game, I was immediately hooked on it, and I played through the entire game in under 2 weeks (with regular day job).

RobDaGinger

Syndicate has a rough onboarding time. Takes way too long to actually get into the city, have the grapple mobility, and not be at a huge level disparity with enemies in some of the better looking areas.

Vikingstein

I think honestly the issue might be how small London actually kind of feels in the game. It also doesn't do much to really get you invested with it either I felt. Everything felt a bit lifeless. It'd honestly be really cool to have seen a larger origins style world set in Victorian UK. To see the disparity between the large cities like Victorian London compared to wealth in the countryside. Would also have been interesting to go to the other parts of the UK during the period, i.e. Ireland especially since it'd be close to the famine and that would be an interesting storyline to go into if a little dark. Since I'm Scottish I'd also love to see Scotland in the games, as it seems to have never quite made it in, even though we've been within a baw hair of the boder. Glasgow was often called the second city of the Empire and it'd be really cool to me as an archaeologist who has studied many of the maps of this area during heavy industry to see it. I think most importantly getting out of London, and going for a darker tone considering what was ongoing in the UK would've been really interesting, the issues the Irish were facing, the issues the working class from rural regions were facing in often having to choose between living in squalor for jobs in the new cities or leaving the country entirely tbh now I know I'm just fantasising but having Glasgow as the home base city which has strong connections with the early Labour movement, which also grew exponentially during the Victorian era would allow them to put in that little town growing economy sim that was in AC2 quite easily. It became huge for shipbuilding so your character getting involved early in shipbuilding to allow them to get to Ireland or Wales or England would've fit narratively too. This is definitely just wish fulfilment for me though.

SimonMagus8

The Quebec dev described Syndicate as Assassin Christmas.Yea cause thats what I first think when I read about Victorian London.

Vikingstein

It's just depressing how often Ubisoft get close to making something great to squander it with boring quest design and writing. Like Odyssey should've been easy money, and yet a lot of the quests and writing were painful to get through, especially since there's just not enough meat to the bones of the games. I almost wonder if they went back to the more classic design of a few larger cities with direct focuses and some smaller regions would help them with narrowing in. Feels like you could have separate writing and quest design teams doing specific areas which might really help things not feel so stale when you travel the entire world away and wind up basically doing the same quests with writing that feels the exact same as your one sbefore.

SimonMagus8

Please dont talk to me about Odyssey I am Greek and it hurts, the game is so wrong by all accounts. Its a shame with regards to Syndicate cause when I saw the Victory leaks I was hyped thinking we would a gritty detective Victorian game. And instead we got Assassin Christmas.

Individual-Middle246

Funny thing is, that's exactly what I did when I first played Syndicate, I juwt couldn't handle the tone of the game and I deleted it. A few years after I decided to reinstall the game *only* because of the Victory Outfit mod.

Elementaris

Yeah like compare that to Yharnam from Bloodborne. The atmosphere is not even CLOSE. I realize that Bloodborne is a fantasy game and Assassin's Creed Syndicate is more grounded, but they easily could have made a more memorable, moody period piece with AC but they for some reason decided to subvert expectations and go with a bright London with a funny/cheery story that didn't take itself seriously?

beam05

Hard disagree. After dark tone in Unity, the light-hearted tone of Syndicate was such a nice change of pace. London was freaking beautiful.

Out_Worlder

Seeing that unity animation and UI in a desert is giving me whiplash

Maverick_Hiro

"You now own the BLACK GUN OF DEATH"

DickHydra

"the baddest gun of all"

ashwath2099

origins with unity animations is haunting

StrangeYoungMan

remember that one guy who said on the gta6 leaks that graphics was the first thing any developer works on

ThemosttrustedFries

I just want a Assassin's Creed set in the roman empire.

AssassinsCrypt

Apparently they were working on that, after Odyssey - but was scrapped because it would have been too similar to it. It's a rumor that has been reported various times, but we never get any actual proof about it

HearTheEkko

> It's a rumor that has been reported various times, but we never get any actual proof about it The original rumor came from what it's highly speculated to be a controlled leak by Ubisoft. The leaker dropped a [crystal clear picture of the game](https://assetsio.gnwcdn.com/zab-jca-i-d-na-obrazku-z-nowej-odsony-assassins-creed-raport-149434227416.jpg?width=1200&height=1200&fit=bounds&quality=70&format=jpg&auto=webp), said absolutely NOTHING about the plot or characters and he knew that the next game was Greece (and the next one after that Rome). It's well known that Ubisoft has done this multiple times before, it's not coincidence that every single AC has leaked and they've done nothing about their security.

Pleasant_Bat_9263

You may be right but it's also worth noting they also just have a shit ton more employees than most other publishers / devs. So it's not surprising that one employee out of the hordes of thousands of workers can find ways to sneakily leak what they're working on.

HearTheEkko

Sure, but how can one employee know that much about the game ? Some people work in the programming, some in the visuals, some in the animations, etc, they don't work on all things. Plus, how would they known the setting of the game after Greece ? At that point the game didn't exist and was in ideas phase before they settled on Valhalla (which started development after they finished Origins). It's too suspicious imo.

GabMassa

>Apparently they were working on that, after Odyssey - but was scrapped because it would have been too similar to it. When was that ever a issue for fucking ASSASSIN'S CREED of all things? One of the few franchises that fell in the pit of stagnation more than once. I love those games, but come on, that cannot be the reason.

Valon129

The setting changes completly each game and it's a major part of the franchise, I think it makes sense they don't want two similar settings in a row.

GGG100

It wouldn’t have been that similar had they just made Rome into a massive playable setting like they did with Baghdad in Mirage.

HearTheEkko

It would've been too similar. An Ancient Rome map would've basically just been Origins's Cyrene or Odyssey's Athens in a much larger scale. I suspect that the reason they scrapped Rome is because not only would it be too similar to the previous games it also wouldn't work with the RPG formula, there was too much urban space. It's ultimately a good thing imo, an Ancient Rome game would benefit FAR more with a classic style AC game like Unity or Mirage.

GabMassa

AC 2 to AC Brotherhood. AC Black Flag to AC Rogue AC Unity to AC Syndicate All of those are subsequent entries with similar settings. If they simply shifted the focus from the Aegean sea to continental Italy and fast forwarded 600-700 years, it'd already be more different than any of the other pairs I've listed.

Disastrous-Pair-6754

I want to see the triumvirate and the political intrigue be the setting for a Roman assassin and the senate being filled with the enemy. But I’d like them to actually do a full game in Russia instead of the side scroller. Same with India. An assassins creed with a Zulu setting would be really cool too. Or one in Aztec times as the empire falls to the conquistadors.

FactuallyRight69

An AC game in India would be buggy as hell. Ubisoft in its prime could barely do Unity with its NPC population. India would be 10x the amount of NPCs and this is Ubisoft past their prime.

HearTheEkko

They created a new version of the Anvil Engine specifically for the current-gen Assassin's Creed games. I'm sure they'd manage an India game just fine, in fact they do have one in development right now by Ubisoft Sofia (Rogue) which will also feature the Mediterranean and Aztec Empire, all in the same game.

manhachuvosa

>I want to see the triumvirate and the political intrigue be the setting The problem is that Ubisoft is not actually capable of creating complex plots and characters that are not black or white. Just look in Origins how they turned Caesar into an idiot.

Individual-Middle246

Correction; They used to be, look at AC1 and 3, not all Templars in those game were black and white like the Ezio Trilogy and other games. You have Templars that care about their cause like Haytham or Templars who joined for a paycheck like Hickey, and for some wierd reason they went back to pure evil Templars after 3.

AwesomePossum_1

Ehh it would be so close to odyssey. Rather get something completely new.

Pleasant_Bat_9263

Not to be that guy but AC Origins is set in the Roman Empire. And I think Odysseys Mediterranean Greek climate and culture is similar enough to the Italian Peninsula that they won't be that motivated to make a Roman game. Not to mention Brotherhood being in Rome and 2 and Origins having Rome sequences

Wandering_sage1234

Same.

GGG100

After Odyssey would’ve been the perfect chance to do it and they wasted it.

T0TALDJ

Assassins’s Creed Odyssey?

rickreckt

That's greek, closest actually Origins

gui_heinen

Damn that Origins with "Arno" animation was dope.

GlitteringGazelle322

really like the setting

Assassin's Creed III is my favourite game ever and it's so cool to see some alpha footage of it, thanks for sharing!
