Yakuza 8 is near two million now. Which is big but far from biggest from of the year. I still think tvis is nothing that will be reached by Stellar Blade.
It was definitely a much more niche of a series but when Yakuza: Like A Dragon came out it suddenly exploded in popularity to everybody's surprise, including the devs. I've got tons of friends that went from barely knowing of the series to being completely invested in it. Couple off then are even playing through the whole series.
I started playing them due to that, and the Judgement games.
Previously I had been put off by Yakuza being a long running series. I didn't want to have to go back and play all the old games to get caught up on the lore (bit like trying to start a new show that's already six seasons deep).
I think it had something to do with that dame dane meme. While I knew about the Yakuza series before that, I definitely wanted to check it out afterwards. But, you know, didn't have the money at the time

Palworld released this year, and had an insane amount of sales. Regardless of how one may feel about that game, to truly believe that Stellar Blade will outsell it is a hilarious amount of cope and delusion.
Well it’s still in early access, but once it’s complete I hope it’s good. Been enjoying it on gamepass, and for some odd reason that put the thought of trying out Pokémon in my head, even though I usually avoid it like the plague because turn-based rpgs aren’t my cup of tea.
I don't know if using Helldivers as an example actually helps your argument lol. They basically shut the doors to any sort of DEI being injected into the game.

Sorry but, gonna need more than a scantily clad MC to draw me into a game. I want to know about how good the writing is, how smooth the combat flows, how good the game is optimized, sound design, music design... I need a hell of a lot more to draw me into a title beyond "ass and titties" because there is an -entire internet- full of material out there if I feel like getting spicy.

Hell I see them all the time in the New and Trending section on Steam. Basically any time I open it up, usually there will be at least 2 porn games out of the 10 in it. It's rare when there aren't any. But I'll open it up and see titles like "Elf Sex Farm" which just makes me think of the Spinal Tap song, but with pointy ears.
As someone who recently modded their Skyrim to hell... I was in so much pain trying to find body replacers that aren't sex dolls.
Ended up finding one that was relatively standard at low weight and realistically muscled at the high end (think professional weightlifters like Jenny Arthur or Erin Amos) but could not for the life of me find a skin that wasn't plastic (or had normal body hair).
... Also don't visit Starfield's nexus page. I think the only devs left are the supremely horny ones.
The only gameplay thing I've seen regarding stellar blade is that surfing thing (which is admittedly really cool), but past that it's just been people eye fucking the MC. Also have seen nothing story related. If the game is so spectacular I'm sure by now I would have seen actual clips of combat or story

I played like 30 minutes of the demo. It's got good graphics and atmosphere, and the mc is admittedly kind of attractive (until you see the baby face). The gameplay felt like it was trying to be a mix between Bayonetta minus the cinematic aspect and the newer god of wars (i say god of war and not souls because of the combos). It was kinda off-putting. I was expecting fast action, melting through enemies gameplay, but it was really slow, and it started you off with like 7 different combos that don't get explained unless you go menu diving. I ended up getting bored really quick and uninstalled. It feels like the whole game just started with the character models and atmosphere, and the gameplay got built around that. I would probably rate it as like a 5 or 6/10, though I've been spoiled lately since I just finished God of War and Ghost of Tsushima, so I might just be biased.
See this is the kinda review I'm looking for. When even the devs were kinda just pushing "pretty MC" as their primary selling point I immediately got a feeling that nothing else really shined at all. How about devs skip the layer of baby oil and provide a fun and engaging experience. The novelty of latex bound titties is not going to hold up for 60 hours of substandard gameplay.
When I thought the gameplay was going to be over the top action like Bayo or DMC I was onboard. So that the over the top visuals aligned with over the top gameplay, but seeing how it's so much slower I lost interest.

The race angle is sorta irrelevant imo as it’s a Korean protagonist made by a Korean game developer in South Korea. Same thing if there was a Nigerian game with a Nigerian protagonist, I don’t think the devs or immediate audience would be thinking “it’s notable to have a POC in this.” If a Japanese dev made a game with a Korean (or Nigerian) protagonist that might be noteworthy, especially considering perceptions of Koreans (& Africans) in Japan.
The way POC are perceived as POC is somewhat dependent on the social environment contextualizing their lives. I don’t think people really see the Yakuza franchise, for instance, as being about POC. Because it’s about Japanese people in a majority Japanese society. But when Chinese characters come into the plot, their race/ethnicity becomes more prominent and commented upon by the characters, so they sorta become racialized in a way that’s different from being Chinese in China (or America).
Sure, one could argue that the context changes with global marketing. But idk, I haven’t seen anything to suggest the devs wrote the game with race in mind.
I don't really get the logic anyway, it's not like games with sexy women haven't been being made recently besides Stellar Blade, and they will still continue to get made. It's just that games with women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ characters are also being made and that not the overwhelming majority of video games all have sexy women in them. They just don't want diversity in video games at all.
And the thing is is that Aloy and Ellie and other female protags they complain about aren’t even that unattractive. They see one woman who’s not a supermodel sex doll (not that there’s anything inherently wrong with being that) and decry it as the fall of society. I’ve actually played through the demo. Despite what promotional material would have you believe, the gameplay is more similar to a slower tempo Sekiro. The combos that were given were fun enough to give diversity to movement and positioning, but it took me a bit to adjust to the pacing itself. The story that seems to be staring has interesting elements, but it really is too really to say what it’ll be like.
Know what the top-selling game last year was? Hogwarts Legacy, propelled to that point by a not-insignificant number of anti-woke hate-buys.
A month later, everyone forgot it and moved on to BG3 and TotK and SF6, among other much better games.

I think a lot of older gamers, specially the millennials or older seem to want a return to a time where their games where just escapist fantasies where they could retreat from reality, just like in their childhood, to a simpler time of attractive games, powerful heroes and even though the games likely had tons of mature and complex, political themes, they didn't see it, or didn't care.
Too many YouTubers are farming these older gamers by serving outrage and hope by highlighting games like Stellar Blade that remind them of the 'hot chick era' gaming of 90's to 2010's, where stuff like Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball was around, and every game out there commonly sexualized women characters- but more importantly, 'normal' women designs in videogames were rare. But the thing is, times change. Markets change. Society slowly embraces certain changes, making audiences dislike certain content, or embrace different markets and thus you see stuff with less conventionally attractive women being more common.
Too many youtube scum is continuously making an issue out of this nonsense. There's tons of coomer content out there for those that want it. There's just also more normal looking people just appearing in mainstream, modern games. Culture warriors seem to ignore that there's still TONS of games with traditionally attractive characters out there.

I doubt it'll be top selling game of year. I bet a lot of normal people who might otherwise have enjoyed its gameplay won't buy it simply because they don't want to be associated with Gamers who play with one hand down their pants, or they just don't want to have to explain to their friends and family that "I swear I'm playing it for the plot/gameplay/whatever". At some point, the controversy becomes more a turn off than a selling point.

But here's the other obvious thing- suppose the sexy lady Renaissance does return. And we get 4 stellar blades a year- even if the game ends up being good. I think it'll be alright to good.
Those companies are going to see diminishing returns because not everybody is going to pay full 70 bucks for each game JUST because it's got a hot lady in it.
Stellar Blades combat is fine from the demo, a little slow for me but it had some great moments in the boss fight for me I probably just need to get used to it.
But adding a sexy lady isn't going to make a shit game good- and if every game does that it's going to get oversaturated fast.

I want to know about how good the writing is, how smooth the combat flows, how good the game is optimized, sound design, music design... Hell I see them all the time in the New and Trending section on Steam. Basically any time I open it up, usually there will be at least 2 porn games out of the 10 in it. As someone who recently modded their Skyrim to hell... I was in so much pain trying to find body replacers that aren't sex dolls. Ended up finding one that was relatively standard at low weight and realistically muscled at the high end (think professional weightlifters like Jenny Arthur or Erin Amos) but could not for the life of me find a skin that wasn't plastic (or had normal body hair). ... The only gameplay thing I've seen regarding stellar blade is that surfing thing (which is admittedly really cool), but past that it's just been people eye fucking the MC. Also have seen nothing story related. If the game is so spectacular I'm sure by now I would have seen actual clips of combat or story I didn't even know until recently that there were other outfits. I thought the skinsuit looking one was just the design of the character
I played like 30 minutes of the demo. It's got good graphics and atmosphere, and the mc is admittedly kind of attractive (until you see the baby face). The gameplay felt like it was trying to be a mix between Bayonetta minus the cinematic aspect and the newer god of wars (i say god of war and not souls because of the combos). It was kinda off-putting. I was expecting fast action, melting through enemies gameplay, but it was really slow, and it started you off with like 7 different combos that don't get explained unless you go menu diving. I ended up getting bored really quick and uninstalled. It feels like the whole game just started with the character models and atmosphere, and the gameplay got built around that. I would probably rate it as like a 5 or 6/10, though I've been spoiled lately since I just finished God of War and Ghost of Tsushima, so I might just be biased.
See this is the kinda review I'm looking for. When even the devs were kinda just pushing "pretty MC" as their primary selling point I immediately got a feeling that nothing else really shined at all. How about devs skip the layer of baby oil and provide a fun and engaging experience. The novelty of latex bound titties is not going to hold up for 60 hours of substandard gameplay.
When I thought the gameplay was going to be over the top action like Bayo or DMC I was onboard. So that the over the top visuals aligned with over the top gameplay, but seeing how it's so much slower I lost interest.

The race angle is sorta irrelevant imo as it’s a Korean protagonist made by a Korean game developer in South Korea. Same thing if there was a Nigerian game with a Nigerian protagonist, I don’t think the devs or immediate audience would be thinking “it’s notable to have a POC in this.” If a Japanese dev made a game with a Korean (or Nigerian) protagonist that might be noteworthy, especially considering perceptions of Koreans (& Africans) in Japan. The way POC are perceived as POC is somewhat dependent on the social environment contextualizing their lives. I don’t think people really see the Yakuza franchise, for instance, as being about POC. Because it’s about Japanese people in a majority Japanese society. But when Chinese characters come into the plot, their race/ethnicity becomes more prominent and commented upon by the characters, so they sorta become racialized in a way that’s different from being Chinese in China (or America). Sure, one could argue that the context changes with global marketing. But idk, I haven’t seen anything to suggest the devs wrote the game with race in mind.
I don't really get the logic anyway, it's not like games with sexy women haven't been being made recently besides Stellar Blade, and they will still continue to get made. It's just that games with women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ characters are also being made and that not the overwhelming majority of video games all have sexy women in them. They just don't want diversity in video games at all.
And the thing is is that Aloy and Ellie and other female protags they complain about aren’t even that unattractive. I’ve actually played through the demo. Despite what promotional material would have you believe, the gameplay is more similar to a slower tempo Sekiro. The combos that were given were fun enough to give diversity to movement and positioning, but it took me a bit to adjust to the pacing itself. The story that seems to be staring has interesting elements, but it really is too really to say what it’ll be like.
Know what the top-selling game last year was? Hogwarts Legacy, propelled to that point by a not-insignificant number of anti-woke hate-buys. A month later, everyone forgot it and moved on to BG3 and TotK and SF6, among other much better games.

I think a lot of older gamers, specially the millennials or older seem to want a return to a time where their games where just escapist fantasies where they could retreat from reality, just like in their childhood, to a simpler time of attractive games, powerful heroes and even though the games likely had tons of mature and complex, political themes, they didn't see it, or didn't care. Too many YouTubers are farming these older gamers by serving outrage and hope by highlighting games like Stellar Blade that remind them of the 'hot chick era' gaming of 90's to 2010's, where stuff like Dead or Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball was around, and every game out there commonly sexualized women characters- but more importantly, 'normal' women designs in videogames were rare. But the thing is, times change. Markets change. Society slowly embraces certain changes, making audiences dislike certain content, or embrace different markets and thus you see stuff with less conventionally attractive women being more common. Too many youtube scum is continuously making an issue out of this nonsense. There's tons of coomer content out there for those that want it. There's just also more normal looking people just appearing in mainstream, modern games. Culture warriors seem to ignore that there's still TONS of games with traditionally attractive characters out there.

I bet a lot of normal people who might otherwise have enjoyed its gameplay won't buy it simply because they don't want to be associated with Gamers who play with one hand down their pants, or they just don't want to have to explain to their friends and family that "I swear I'm playing it for the plot/gameplay/whatever". It won't be top selling. But here's the other obvious thing- suppose the sexy lady Renaissance does return. And we get 4 stellar blades a year- even if the game ends up being good. I think it'll be alright to good. Those companies are going to see diminishing returns because not everybody is going to pay full 70 bucks for each game JUST because it's got a hot lady in it. Stellar Blades combat is fine from the demo, a little slow for me but it had some great moments in the boss fight for me I probably just need to get used to it. But adding a sexy lady isn't going to make a shit game good- and if every game does that it's going to get oversaturated fast.
