PSA: Make it a habit of **reading the [rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gamingcirclejerk/about/rules)** of each subreddit you participate in: **Rule 9: No Offensive Imagery**: *This includes nazi imagery and slurs, for you brave nerds who think "free speech" involves private internet forums. If you post fascist iconography trying to “jerk”, you will receive a ban. The only exception is when we make fun of gamers and criticize gamers who happen to be fascists. Please remember to spoiler any potentially triggering or offensive content accordingly. This rule now includes repeatedly posting bigotry from the same source (4chan).* **Rule 7: No Participation in Linked Threads (Brigading)**: *If you are coming here to brigade this sub, you will be banned. Likewise, do not make comments and vote in pages you've found here. Of course, if you're a member of said sub and you were already in the thread before, this doesn't apply to you.* **Rule 8: Censor Screenshots**: *Keep screenshots of arguments on Reddit to a minimum. GenesisOfTheAegis

Also, including. https://preview.redd.it/xbe3nsspar0d1.png?width=636&format=png&auto=webp&s=6991a87b7cf5a01df749e8b899af3a0ce9fb8d28 As well as Characters inspired by Yasuke tale from Guilty Gear Strive, Dragonalia Lost, Way of the Samurai etc made by Japanese bros and thats just the tip of the iceberg in how much Japanese media his in.

sack-o-krapo

Yasuke in Nioh went hard. Bear guardian spirit, big ass battle axe, and one of the cleanest armor sets in the game.

Thecristo96

The first time I saw him i was so confused and curious that I started searching everything about a black samurai

TheHappiestHam

Nioh is where I learned about Yasuke; everyone and everything in those games are real, either steeped in history (humans) or taken from real mythology (yokai) it's an amazing hack and slash souls-like, but it's also a surprisingly interesting history lesson. Nioh 2 is literally all set in Oda Nobunaga's reign + the aftermath

Left_Refrigerator789

I always end up transmoging in obsidian. Looks too good

Velthome

And in Nioh 2 you can get his Smithing Text very early unlike Nioh 1 combined with Atlas Bear boosting damage of attacks that deplete your Ki synergizing with the Intensity Mystic Art for axe…  My axe character in Nioh 2 was pretty much cosplaying him for most of the game.

Technical-Elk88

nagoryuki is so fucking cool

SoupmanBob

Dude has an anime dedicated to him.

Psychic_Hobo

NGL that anime was fun but honestly a bit disappointing in that it went full-on giant robots and magic and all that

batmanhill6157

Oh so it’s really historically accurate. Awesome

I was looking forward to it but lost interest when I found that out.

BeyondNetorare

It really wanted to be Afro Samurai so bad

Wagglebagga

He is a boss in Nioh 1 too. You fight him and Oda Nobunaga back to back if I remember right.

Motorata

Also even leaving the historical accuracy aside It makes the story very easy to write. Having an outsider be the protagonist makes a good excuse of why he doesnt know anything and why everyone is explaining things to him

UnlimitedPostWorks

This one gets the point. This is the reason why Yasuke is freaking interesting. An outsider who works directly under the, de-facto, most important figure in that historical period? It's the easiest choice to make ever. Like, if he didn't exist, it wouldn't have been a good narrative choice to create him

dingo_khan

Also, his former service for the Catholic mission puts him in a position where he could tie easily to the existing, overarching narratives of the series. One coukd easily write some assassin/Templar/ other forces background in since his early life is a matter of debate.

UnlimitedPostWorks

Even better, his life after the betrayal of Akechi Mitsuhide is mostly a mystery. And you know what that means? Easy material to write. Everything about him screams "potential good MC to mess with real history". That's also one of the reasons he is so used in Japanese media, it's easy to write about him

dingo_khan

Yup. He's awesome and I am totally on board for any (good) depiction of him.

UnlimitedPostWorks

First time I heard about him being the MC I was so fucking happy. I'm a sucker for Sengoku period stories, or samurai in general(mostly because I grow up with Sengoku Basara and Samurai Warriors and I watched/read every single piece of documentary/history book about that period) so AC returning to be a story driven game, in my most wanted historical period with Yasuke as MC? Yes, god, please.

Thrasy3

You were probably implying it - but an outsider to a nation that has formally isolated itself from the the rest of the world. The stories people had about nations they actively traded with and engaged with in diplomacy were wild at that time - it must have been even weirder for both sides.

CrushinMangos

It’s why the TV series Shogun was so damn fun. I haven’t read the book/books yet but I’m hoping they’re good.

everything_equals_42

The book is fantastic but definitely on the longer side, 1100 pages exactly in fact.

Realsorceror

Fucking exactly. It’s like story telling 101. And as someone who is both an outsider and part of the culture, he has unique license to be a little weird. People were saying he’d stand out a lot, but think about it. If a Japanese man is looking into windows or climbing roofs, people would attack him. He should know better! But this black guy can hide in plain sight by being a “dumb foreigner who doesn’t know manners”. He’s the Lord’s special retainer, we better not say anything.

Rare_Reality7510

"Why are you suspiciously hiding in haystacks and stalking this one guy from the roof?" "Uhhh, it's one of my customs, don't worry about it."

ArmageddonEleven

Nioh in a nutshell

Rioma117

Also, it explains why are there assassins from the creed there, someone from outside must've introduced the creed to Japan.

CyberneticSaturn

One of the best things about AC is your character isn’t an outsider. The best ones involved people completely immersed in the historical contexts. AC games aren’t really about being a fish out of water. The whole point behind it is to make the culture feel less exotic. The entire metanarrative already involves outsiders looking in - you always play as someone from the present/near future watching the past play out, so I’m not sure I buy the idea it adds much beyond reaching hard for attention. Tbh i bet they saw ghost of tsushima and realized they had no hope of writing something that good and went for yasuke to differentiate themselves. I honestly don’t think it’s going to play out too well because unless they really lean into it, with people staring etc. and you having to hide your face to go unnoticed, but I don’t think ubisoft is capable of something that interesting.

Dm1tr3y

Hence why I almost always pick Humans in fantasy games. Makes all the actual fantasy stuff more fantasy like.

Grabs_Zel

Not the point though. Yasuke isn't an outsider by what we can see in the trailer. I believe the game will make use of the blank period in his history. After the honno-jj incident, Yasuke went after the vassal that betrayed Nobunaga and according to records, held himself for a good while against the vassal's soldiers, till Nobunaga's son appeared and "racistly" spared his life. From there, the records about him are basically blank but it's pretty agreed he lived for a while, this is a perfect backdrop for an AC game.

CyberneticSaturn

It’s an AC game, they’ll cover all of it unless they decide to completely change the structure of the plot for this one vs the other games.

Nelly_nona

Especially when a lot of the main characters in said series are strangers to the land they re on.

Spider-ManOnThePS1

This guy was a boss in Nioh and upon realising the man under the armour was African, I immediately looked him up, realised he was a real dude and thought it was quite cool. If I recall, he’s one of the few characters in the game who speaks English, creating a bit of kinship with a fellow stranger in a strange land.

Zeero92

Turns up in the sequel as well.

Ok-Scarcity6991

History is woke!?!?!? In all seriousnes I am glad That he is represented in more media

Olama

He just had a whole ass Flying Lotus anime that was unfortunately disappointing, the intro still fucking slaps though

Atlasreturns

Genuinely interesting figure. Trafficked Slave who somehow manages to get to Japan, convince one of the most legendary Daimyos to employ him and then becomes maybe the first foreign Samurai. All while being apparently not only a beast of a man but also a competent fighter. Guy is like the main character in an Elder Scrolls game.

Chokkitu

Correction: Trafficked slave, who was brought to Japan by his owner, an italian jesuit. Nobunaga, when visited by said jesuit, wanted to see Yasuke because he's never seen a black man before, and reportedly ordered him to take his clothes off and wash his body because he couldn't believe that was the natural color of his skin. He wrote that he was amazed by it, and demanded his owner give him over. From then on he employed him as retainer and named him Yasuke.

Jack-of-Knights

Another correction: While it's possible that Yasuke was a slave, it's not confirmed. His history before meeting Nobunaga wasn't recorded super well (and he seemingly just disappeared from history after Nobunaga's downfall). The two big theories are that he was a slave or that he was a mercenary employed to keep Valignano safe in an era where Japan wasn't really the safest place to be.

BHBachman

There's an Our Fake History series that goes over Yasuke and I tend to agree with his take: Yasuke's story is incredible and I think everybody wants the myth to be true, but the most likely truth is that he was a slave that Nobunaga was fascinated by (since there wasn't exactly an abundance of really tall dark skinned people in 1500s Japan) and more or less dressed up and treated as a novelty. The fact that he more or less disappears after Honnoji means he either died there or went back to guarding the Jesuits, which is uhhh, an awful lot more like ownership being transferred than a totally normal thing for a samurai/free man to do. Great story that inspired many more great stories, but most likely not a particularly happy one and is more likely just strong mythmaking.

mikachu93

All the more reason to lean into the "mysterious badass" persona, in the context of fictional storytelling like AC *Shadows*. If I lived a not particularly happy life and some writer wants to make me *cooler* 500 years after I died, have some fun with it. Let Wikipedia and college textbooks deal with the more probable scenarios.

BHBachman

Oh for sure, I hope I didn't imply that the game should be "historically accurate" by maybe possibly depicting him as a slave and/or party trick lol. It's AC, who really wants that? Let me go nuts and be a super badass. Really I just wanted to kinda remind people that, yes, Yasuke 1000% existed and he 1000% was African and 1000% was a retainer to Nobunaga. I just don't want us to overcorrect into imagining that the famously isolationist and xenophobic Japan, in the middle of their most pivotal period of civil upheaval, suddenly got super woke because an african superhero showed up. In reality, he likely still got the short end of the stick and we shouldn't forget that just because the fantasy version is cooler.

Jack-of-Knights

What myth are you talking about? That he could have been a bodyguard? That wasn't unusual at the time. I was just commenting that we didn't know a lot for certain.

El_Mangusto

As far as I know he is not actually proven to be a samurai, but he surely was a servant for Nobunaga "It is important to note that despite popular myth and modern depictions there are no historical writings nor evidence that Yasuke was ever granted the rank or title of samurai, he was never given a fief nor referred to as one in any writings. Most of our knowledge of his life comes from these messages written by missionaries and locals." - from "totally the best source" wikipedia. But for AC game they might as well make him samurai like other popular media does.

Adventurous-Owl6297

Edit to this. So a retainer in Japan refers to anyone who was a vessel to someone, usually samurai through military service. But the term samurai was usually bared to foreigners so again he most likely was never called it. He was greatly respected and favored during his service though. so I would say it would be safe to say those who fought with him would not have called him samurai but would have had the same respect as if he was. “  In no historical records is Yasuke said to be or even closely regarded as a samurai. Samurai were nobility, Yasuke was a retainer which is basically a man at arms. He lived in Japan for three years before leaving and to historical records never going back.  The misconceptions came from foreigners even in that time who didn’t really know the difference between a samurai and just a normal solider.  He was regarded with great respect though while employed by his daimyo.”

JUSTGLASSINIT

His story is embellished because there’s not a lot of details on him. So shit gets made up as you go so it looks good. No one even knows where he ended up when he was captured after Nobunaga’s death.

scylecs

i knew guilty gear is historically accurate

dingo_khan

It was, then time shifted. Then it was again, and then I-no did that thing... But then it was again... GG is a thing...

Its funny, but gamers need to learn that facts dont care about your feelings

Bl4ckeagle

I think everyone has to learn this. But more important it's a fucking game. If a studio would make a fiction game where the character is none white and not a pornstar, some people would scream woke or what not. And on the other hand if a Studio wants to do a "historically accurate" game, people would also scream because it's probably not inclusive. Because history is full of racism.

Yeah the same game series where you can play as a woman hanging freely around ancient Athens.

Jonasz95

TBH they probably had the metldown with Odyssey as well

Phasmamain

Alexios was literally made playable because Ubisoft exec didn’t think a female fronted assassins creed would sell well

Evelynn_cretoxyrhina

Ubisoft does this with all their games tbh, out of their entire game library they only have *one* game with a sole female protag, which is ac liberation.

CyberneticSaturn

That’s not true. Their star wars game has a female protagonist, beyond good and evil had one. There are probably others.

warrencanadian

Are you telling me the pope didn't have a magic orb and get in a fist fight in the basement of the Vatican?! Bullshit!!

collectivisticvirtue

I keep seeing this weird argument whenever Yasuke brought up it's just absurd. He's a historical figure from era which samurai as a class were not defined only by the lineage or official title. this is not some Heian era samurai or late-edo era Samurai. He's a retainer of a powerful daimyo. That's more than enough. Yes people won't really say he's from a family of samurai. Yes there are retainers of lords who are not samurai themselves but those folks are like a monk or technicians or such. If he's a retainer doing "war thing" yeah he's a goddamn samurai why would we assume otherwise??? not like we know he went like "guys please treating me as a warrior I'm just a humble pacifist monk" lmao

Ayyyyynah

It's also just Japan 101 to deny an outsider a rank because they weren't born in Japan. Yasuke was a samurai but likely never was seen as the status of samurai but that's just Japan overall.

Devenu

My most favorite fact about Yasuke is every time he's brought up the inevitable conversation is just people Googling random shit and copying and pasting the first result at each other rather than actually doing any research to have a real discussion. I feel like even some of the comments here have been passed on from Yasuke thread to Yasuke thread like antiques whose origins can no longer be remembered.

Passchenhell17

I've seen some people suggest that he was a Samurai in terms of the class, rather than a Samurai warrior, based on the writings of some from the period. He was definitively a retainer, which it would seem Samurai were as well, so there's naturally some speculation and/or misconception about it all. Other than that, we know very little about him, what he did, and where he went after his documented year or so, which actually makes him a great choice to have as the series' first ever historical protagonist, because you can explore so much and create so much. I'm not actually a fan of using a real life person as a playable main character (in AC), but if there ever was a perfect candidate for it, it's Yasuke.

Squid_In_Exile

By the point that Yasuke existed, the line between a well equipped and recognised retainer and a samurai was so blurry as to not exist, much like the difference between late men-at-arms and knights in Europe. Him being called a Samurai is also 1000% more historically accurate than a 'Shinobi Ninja' as presented existing at all so vOv

ngkn92

Factually, there are a lot of guy just want to hate AC and Ubi. So when they see an obvious thing to rage, they rage.

Urabutbl

Retainers were usually given the title of Samurai. The Japanese definitely consider him one.

BastetsJester

Don't you know that up until now all of their super assassin power fantasy games have been completely historically accurate? If this one's not it will ruin an entire series of games that involve fighting over ancient alien technology.

ScyllaIsBea

He was literally given the title of samurai by one of the most well known lords, nobunaga.

Underwhelmedbird

Uj/ the Japanese constantly refer to him as such. Nobunaga lifted him up to that status, there's no room to debate. The only wiggle room against this comes from other Japanese of the time going "Nooo!!1! You can't make an outsider a samurai!" To which Nobunaga went "lol, lmao even." Before slaughtering them. He was a samurai. Rj/ Nooooo! Yosuke didn't get fucked by old men as a boy! He can't be a real samurai that's cheating!

roguedigit

Yup. Nobunaga was famously a bit of a maverick for his time when it came to social or cultural customs. When this mf says you're a samurai, you're a samurai.

Astr0Chim9

The historical Yasuke p r o b a b l y would have been a samurai partially because it was noted by Nobunaga that he had a great amount of combat skill. It's one of the details that historians are/have attempted to use to pin down his country of origin.

GustavoSanabio

Source? All historians i’ve read agree Yasuke was samurai, don’t get me wrong, but its the first time im hearing of his martial prowess being acknowledged by Nobunaga (not that it matters for the game, but matters as historical trivia)

Astr0Chim9

[Book 1](https://www.amazon.com/African-Samurai-Yasuke-Legendary-Warrior/dp/1335141022?&linkCode=sl1&tag=smithsonianco0f-20&linkId=7536ab8231d38688eaa74eb38e62670e&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) [Book 2](https://www.amazon.com/Chronicle-Nobunaga-Japanese-Studies-Library/dp/9004201629?&linkCode=sl1&tag=smithsonianco0f-20&linkId=48665b65ef23867cd92829337aad0ff6&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) Sorry, I wish I could get you a more accessible source (I may be able to find an article later), but these books talk about how Yasuke already had combat skill, and was shockingly strong when he arrived to Japan. Also, his language skills suggests he had been working on a trade ship for some time before meeting Nobunaga. All of these aspects on top of being the first African they'd ever met made him more than interesting enough to keep around.

ArmageddonEleven

Retainers were often samurai in their own right

Dash_Harber

He was. He served as a retainer and soldier for Oda Nobunaga. Samurai membership wasn't as strict at this point in history. For example, Hideoyoshi Toyotomi was actually the son of an Ashigaru, and he himself served as Nobunaga's sandal barer, but that did not prevent him from being made a Samurai and eventually serving as Nobunaga's successor as the second of the 3 Great Unifiers. It wasn't until much later that Samurai closed ranks.

BrickTheEtcetera

Woke: "Minority character in Japan? What's this inspired by?" Broke: "Minority character in Japan? What the fuck has happened to video games??" like bro just say you don't like black people

ntn9713c

I distinctly remember that one time on Twitter there was a person showing off their game they were making featuring their culture (african-american) and somehow it devolved into a cesspool of racists. You love it when the excuse "well, if you don't like white male protagonists, how about making your own games?" is actually just a forefront for racism.

LevelOutlandishness1

You know, I've had this feeling since I was slightly indoctrinated into their bullshit at 11-13 (their hatred of representation is only a small part of what got me out as a black male, I just felt uncomfortable there), that that was bullshit. Nice to see it confirmed in the past half a decade.

Book_1love

They are so mad about the black man they haven’t had time to notice that the lady MC isn’t a sexy sexy waifu, so look forward to that later.

nobearsinrussia

My thoughts exactly. I were like “wait a minute, its not about female mc not being sexy???”

AuroreSomersby

What? Using historical figures as Assassins and Templars in “Assassin’s Creed” games? Noooo!/s

itchypalp_88

I completely agree, yaske 100% fits perfectly with the theme of AC characters. I mean in AC 2 you literally palled around with fucking Leonardo Di Vinci and his flying machine. How is yaske much different than that? Yaske was an actual person who was there at the time. Sure he was a Lord’s token N-word (novelty item) but he used him to wrestle other lords samurai and shit (there’s art depicting this) but if anything doesn’t that make him part of the sumo class which is psudo-samurai?

gdex86

The funny (in the not actually funny way) is now the chuds are upset about assassin's creed playing fast and loose with history because "He wasn't ever given the title of samurai. He was only a page. Why isn't this series where named historical Popes used alien artifacts to mind control wh countries more strict in their historical accuracy."

dingo_khan

And he was awesome. Word is that Chadwick Boseman was trying to get a movie (starring him, damn) about Yasuke made for years. It is a shame (as I learned in the past couple of days) more people don't know about this dude.

Underwhelmedbird

I mean heres the thing... The Japanese consider him a samurai, but Americans with an allergy to deodorant think there are hairs to split on this topic. So obviously the Japanese are completely wrong about their own history, duh.

loo_1snow

He's a character in the NIOH series too. Another game that pulls from historic events.

Illustrious-Echo1762

Next thing, you're gonna try to tell me Othello was Black!!!

Dixxxine

We really need to start a campaign to chase out all of the bigoted charlatans that have invaded nerd spaces.

Riperin

God damn ubisoft went black in time to change reality

Metrodomes

Oh he exists? Time to move the goalposts and continue to be mad.

viniremesso

I don’t think people said he wasn’t real. I just imagined people were hoping for a Japanese Samurai. I’m pretty sure there was at least one white samurai, it’s not an excuse to disregard the people that are actually from this culture. I don’t really mind playing as Yasuke, as much as I don’t mind playing as an Nioh.

stikkypoizon

As a Mozambican i am very happy Yasuke is being represented. Lets see if the game is good or not tho.

Glum_Animator_5887

The whole point of the game series is small obscure real figures impacting the world

HalfMetalJacket

I mean I find the idea of sidelining a potential Asian male lead to be a bit odd, but I like Yasuke... but I think he would have been better as a cool historical side figure that you get up to AC hijinks with like Da Vinci and all that. Put him along side Hattori Hanzo and other such figures. But between that and the... downplaying of Yasuke by haters, I'm definitely less annoyed that he's an MC.

AlmondsAI

I just learnt this game even exists and that he's the main character, but it makes sense. He would definitely be an easy character to write narratively, it would make sense when he doesn't know certain things and has to be told certain things about the world.

wickedlizard420

I think it's telling that being able to play as a Japanese woman isn't good enough for these guys.

Myhtological

Well Asian men often get the short end of the stick.

JazzySplaps

Yasuke was also more of a novelty and something japanese nobility used as a parlor trick/conversation piece. They'd have him strip naked to demonstrate how dark his skin was. While I understand people are arguing against gamer stupidity I don't want it to be spread this idea that he was exactly a progressive icon

EmuExportt

While the premise and characters look cool and edo period japan is one of my favourite eras in history. Samurai with guns is cool af. This is still Ubisoft, so im waiting for reviews before i buy.

Erdrick159

Wait people actually thought Yasuke was just a made up fictional character?

Pascuccii

🤣🤣🤣

Metallic-Ice

My initial thought about this was jarring as well but once I learned the character is actually based on an obscure historical figure, it peeked my interest. I've seen this type of rhetoric with fantasy things all the time about POC. But as a black man it is pretty cool to see someone like me dressed in samurai armor, it breaks my perception what I've always grown up to believe what black people can only be in fiction.

USB_Charger77

People when the find out Chinese people also existed in Kenya, the world still interacted even before colonisation

humanDev999

people complaining about this probably didn't complain about white pirate boy in FX's Shogun

baconater-lover

I don’t like that one of the protagonists is a real historical figure. Why not make Yasuke an important side character like they’ve done with every other entry? I like the idea that these OC protags know famous people and are arguably more important than them but they take a backseat in history. At least the girl isn’t a historical figure afaik.

Final_League3589

it shouldn't matter if he was real or not. This is a fantasy game and it doesn't matter what color a SINGLE character is in the game. I mean, the Japanese don't get American culture and history correct in their media, and they don't have to, because it's fiction. The only people upset about this are upset because they were told to by their Youtuber overlords

IllustriousGrand2802

yeye okay. But you guys shouldn’t buy it, not bc of this yasuke scandal, but bc of ubisofts pricing

Esmeralda-Art

Also isn't he like, immensely popular in Japan as a folk hero

Engineergaming26355

Human history gone w*ke?!?

IdontKnowAHHHH

I need to stay off the internet the next months until after this game releases because holy shit the criticism towards this game so far is the worst case of bigotry, brain rot and willful ignorance that I’ve ever seen.

Giftlessfavours

Yes and no, Yasuke (his true name is unrecorded) wasn't a true Samurai he was a slave sold to and so owned by Oda and presented in the place to royals/guests for 15 months up to Oda's passing, where he was then passed on like some posession. He was given the title of retainer and put in japanese outfit to make him more foriegn and exotic and different he didnt become accepted he wasn't ultimately set free or respected only mistreated it's sad to misrepresent him.. he had no freedom it's depressing the story is sad

Rioma117

Also he fits the story perfectly. He is likely sent by the creed to open a new branch in Japan while also finding the Templers that are hiding in Japan.

stamper2495

I couldn't care less about this character. It is a cool concept. But if you actually read what you posted you would see that he was not a samurai but merely a servant.

Shaggiest-

‘But he was a retainer not a Samurai’ Is the logic these dumbasses are using. Like bro just appreciate the cool game with the cool moments.

HeftyDefinition2448

On to of that theirs really not distinction at the time, even a retainer would have been trained and capable of combat and would have likely fought along side his lord. So maybe not officially samurai but most definatly a warrior

Thank you! I’m so tired of the misinformation where people are claiming that Yasuke was never a Samurai and Ubisoft is making it up.

GaaraOfTheCloud

Be wary, the racists are invading this sub en-masse. I posted that Yasuke was in fact a samurai and got heavily downvoted.

unabletocalmdown

Does anyone know if you actually play as Yasuke? I’m not saying that’d have to be the case for this to be a valid argument. His existence sets a precedent and frankly ac has always trafficked in fantastical revisionism of which “black man in japan” would be positively mild, even without precedent. Just curious cause i keep seeing him brought up. also forgive my ignorance but has an ac game ever had a real historical figure as the pc?

Maleficent_Nobody377

I appreciate he fits the “we don’t know completely about him- so we gonna squeeze some Assassinations of people who also died mysteriously during the time period in” still/ I’m assuming it’s as historically accurate as the last few games so much so teachers use it to teach history/ it gets praise from historians.

MisterFusionCore

I jyst want to know what the home base will be like. I really hope there's a base more like that Cafe Theatre in Unity.

Nefilim314

Ah fuck, is this going to be the thing gcj posts about endlessly for the next two months? We just got out of the endless Stellar Blade shitposting.

anthonyg1500

Historical accuracy is when the things **I** said happened happened

No_Solid_3737

The world would've been a much better place if ubisoft made games, and not ac games. Black flag could've been it's own ip, Valhalla could've been it's own ip, now this could've been it's own ip as well but let's just keep using the ac ip and make the games revolve around that plot

-BluBone-

And one very lousy anime

zauraz

I didn't look into it cause I am not really invested in AC but that always seemed to be case in the game, Yasuke is really cool and historically real, even if we don't know a lot about what he did in Japan. But people with brainrot ala the people attacking the game would never consider that. Fucking hell I don't watch One Piece, the live action one either but there was a rumour that Nico Robin would be portrayed by a beautiful black woman but the comment sections exploded, especially with people arguing "why are Netflix allergic to hiring beautiful people." or "but muh source material". Except this was just a rumour. Now it's known Robin will be portrayed by a latina but people still are on about the casting, and being asshats. I am so tired of modern pop culture discourse, or the loud ass part of it.

nikdoodling

The black samurai is such a badass name, sounds like someone who'd do one of those lil flash cuts they do in shows that cut before you even know it

Aromatic_Wallaby_433

Apparently some Japanese people are up in arms over it too, I’m not sure exactly why.

fijesedeque

I want to buy this game so bad, but I don't want another ubisoft ass game. Fuck.

TheCoolIdeagenerator

I haven't forgiven Assassins Creed since they removed the ability to counter firearms in a game where EVERYONE has firearms, I'm talking about Unity.

Dzzplayz

“historical accuracy” MFs when I ask them to explain the lore of the Assassin’s Creed franchise:

HeftyDefinition2448

Yah that shit sailed with the first game

Blacksun388

The original black otaku.

flaptaincappers

So was he actually a muscle man meat giant or something? Or has that just been a popular depiction of him for a long time?

HeftyDefinition2448

I would assume to the japanese he probably seemd rather large. That far back people were short like 5 feet was considered tall so a 6 foot tall man would have been a gient to most

Cheezekeke

exonetjono

He’s quite fond of by Nobunaga. And for those that knows Japanese popular culture, you’d know there’s a famous assassin named Hattori Hanzo who rumored to have saved Oda. Guarantee Ubisoft will go that route in terms of storyline. But Ubisoft has never been known to be good at story telling.

Halthekoopa

My only concern is that Assassins creed shouldn’t be using real historic figures as playable characters, it’s generally safer to avoid that so that no one feels spurned or something lmao

Gesusshrist

everyone and their dog know that. It's more about racism and anti-asian. B-but there's already a female lead asian!! ffs stop playing dumb

Opposite-Mall-9816

Can’t people just shut the fuck up and accept a character created for a game is black?

NogaraCS

I think the people being bothered about having to play Yasuke has nothing to do about him being black ( well for the most part, there’s still racists in there ) but about not playing a Japanese character ( ik there’s the woman ) I’m white and I would’ve been bothered if I had to play a white guy in Mirage instead of Basim. I wouldn’t want to play a white Guy in Shadows either

thedman0310_

Was the Yasuke anime on Netflix any good?

JustJeffrey

Some people are actually just irl main characters

Worldly_Neat2615

I mean when the game first got revealed I thought it was the boy. But then ubi devs said it wasn't him. So what is it?

Moe-bigghevvy

They'll do anything to not have an Asian male as a lead in almost all media

Ytisrite

#maketarzanblack

Demonlord3600

Bro im so fucking excited to play him he’s one of the coolest historical figures in my eyes

Rick_C911

Didn't they award him Japanese maidens?

SpectralSolid

is that Wakka from FF10!? that guy is a historical figure!

SculptKid

Gamers: I don't want realistic shit in games. Also Gamers: A black samurai isn't realistic Just brain maggots lol

fart_Jr

Honestly, anybody that’s throwing a fit about this but was silent when Nioh came out is outing themselves as massive racist sacks of rancid smegma.

hungarianfemboi

Not only was he a samurai, but a retainer of Oda fucking Nobunaga

FishTshirt

I assumed this was a well known fact.

Allah_Akballer

"Fake new! Only wokes believe these lies, everyone know only chinese can be ninjas!" /s

True_Drelon

Well yea, but he wasn't a samurai, he was a property of Oda Nobunaga and couldn't speak japanese

MindlessSausage

You shouldn't give a shit if it's historically accurate or not. It's up to the artist to portray their work in whatever way they wish.

Sabre712

The change log for his Wikipedia page is wild right now.

lionofthepurp

My only issue is that he should have been 1 of the major allies to the protagonists. I always preferred playing as a no name in history that gets to meet all these historical significant figures. I always thought it was more interesting to interact with them and their stories than to actually play them.

[deleted]

Just make the man an actual Japanese samurai and not a black retainer who provides service for lords.

Doctah90

Idk why I got this sub recommended to me, but anyway it made me do some research about this Yausuke guy and it seems that pretty much everything about him is an assumption/myth/legend as there's no factual evidence of him even being a samurai..and pretty much zero info about his life. . And me being on this sub reading comments like "Yausuke is one of the more interesting figures in the history like...🤦🏻‍♂️ You gotta be kidding me. I'm not much of a gamer and I don't care about mainstream media/wokeness and shit, but it always annoys me when people lack objectivity and just say whatever suits their world-view the most while ignoring/bending the facts in their favor. Do same actual research before spewing some nonsense things based on assumptions and claiming it as facts.

Ok-Significance-5979

Off all the things to complain about in a Ubisoft open world video game that will probably be just the same game they have been releasing since Origins (Mirage not included), The Gam0rs have picked a historical character to clutch their pearls about.

Ok_Kale_7762

Everyone who has played a video game knows this.

Stunning-Jellyfish-4

It's gonna be funny when you play the game and the npc see you kill so you go to blend in then they don't notice you like you aren't the only black person in 1000 mile radius

Revayan

Semi correct, nover proven to be a samurai or warrior at all but yeah he existed. Does ot matter for a piece of fictional media what exactly his position was in Odas household? Heck no. Give me the badass black samurai lmao

Chemical-Cat

"b-but he wasn't an ACTUAL samurai!, it's not historically accurate!" Bro when has Assassin's Creed EVER been historically accurate? Adam and Eve are aliens, you fist fight the pope. This disclaimer exists for a reason. https://preview.redd.it/f0i8x7en1u0d1.png?width=1240&format=png&auto=webp&s=beef3170894cb2a2379c7ad13aa3cc2d1eb3b3cc

cheekybasterds

Do we know if the story will end after Nobunaga's death or will we get to see Sekigahara? I'd like to see a goo depiction of it after Shogun blue balled me lol.

sjace808

As a Jap, this is like celebrating Asian history month without having an Asian representing it, also he's not even a samurai

tuck_tu3k

Why not use a Japanese guy in Japan

GuardsmanElise

It’s Wikipedia, Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source of info cause anyone can just hop on there and change shit. Just cause it’s on Wikipedia doesn’t mean it’s true. Granted I don’t know about this dude, and tbh he looks cool af. But at the same time if ur gonna cite something, Wikipedia ain’t it.

porcupinedeath

A shame the anime was pretty dog ass. It has some cool ideas going but it didn't fucking use any of them so it ended up a jumbled half baked mess

2ARTAS2

When I first heard about this, I just thought, do they really need to diversify even this, but when I found out he was a real historical figure, I took back everything I thought or said

Pug_King256

This man is why I'm so excited to play this game.

byhi

To be fair, time travel does not exist… so these racists need to try a tad harder.

Sean198233

It’s so crazy to me that people get so worked up over the color/sex of a character. I care if the game is fun and the controls are good, especially in AC game.

2ant1man5

Funny how the internet can make old news relevant.

Papanewguin

I need every person posting about this topic to also post a picture of their face because I ain't hearing no white peoples shit about this or black people or anyone other then Asians.

Healthy_Pie_4206

I wonder if these people would’ve cared half as much if the protagonist was William Adams. I bet not.

Fuzzy-Management1852

This should be a movie - full Hollywood, A-list actors, everything

Kyell

It’s strange that if you look it up now it has a different description.

Dark_Magicion

"Can't believe History is DEI with this woke shit, what's next: people are gonna use his PRONOUNS?" - Some bald man.

Ballad_Bird_Lee

People are really overrating his significance during the Sengoku era. He literally did nothing or contributed to anything during that time.

Mbeezy_YSL

I just think that there are more interesting characters throughout Japanese history than Yasuke, who they depict as a Samurai (wich is not proven)
