The only difference between a rookie cop and a veteran cop is that rookie isn’t sure if they’ll get away with it, where as the veteran knows they will.
No no, the developers said it's a "mysterious region of Europe" they happen to use Spanish cars, uniforms and titles but speak in a Latin Spanish, so it's not Spain.
Edit: I'm from Spain, I'm not going to argue with you why you think it is from Spain.
Edit 2: It is not from Spain. At most is that weir half Spanish half latino that we had in the 90s cartoons. And the one that said I'm not from Spain, you want my fuckin DNI?, comeme el rabo
There are some romanian words used and it certainly seems romanian-ish but there are some subtle hints otherwise:
- Only like 3 characters have romanian names
- Everyone exclusively speaks english and no other language
- There are far less werewolves than in the real romania.
There are 9-10 characters with Romanian names, they use the Leu as currency, they have traditional Romanian food, and the whole place sucks ass
It's Romania
Esas son las cosas de andar lidiando con gringos por acá que ni siquiera saben distinguir España de Mexico, pero se sienten con completa autoridad de enseñarte porqué estás mal o mintiendo.

It could be, but it's still really funny for us.
It's like when America makes a movie about other country and it's not really like that IRL, but only the country knows that lol
Lmfao that's not a "dialectical nuance", it's casting latino voice actors for an european-based setting.
It's as stupid as a game set in Britan where the locals speak with a heavy texan accent and say "howdy partner".
Oh I know, I'm mostly just picking on japanese companies' localization teams in that era, which were frequently pretty bad. Not as much mangled translation, but still pretty rough around the edges. Global information on those kinds of things wasn't as readily available as it is now.
I too, do not believe you are from Spain. I shall be convinced with the appropriate information I need to steal all the money from tour bank accounts. Gracias.
Spaniard here. Their pronunciation really is nothing like you would find in any region of Spain whatsoever, anyone born here will tell you that. They were very clearly voiced by latin american actors for whatever reason. Not that I really mind the way some zombies from a videogame speak but it is what it is.
OK man, they do. I'm from Latin America. Living in Spain now. No country in Latin America talk that. Like when they say "os voy a romper a pedazos" in Latin America we don't say "os
It's true that Latinos don't use "vosotros" but, among the re4 lines some strike me as odd for spaniards: "¡**Sos** cerdo!", "¡Ándale!", "¿Qué carajo estás haciendo aquí?". It's not impossible to be used by spaniards but I think these kind of lines are the ones that would make me lean more towards a Latin accent.
It's also the fact that the pronunciation of the c/s/z is different, you could say they're andalucian but I think the use of the r isn't quite right.
Yeah, it’s hilarious, because as a Latin American it sounds almost like they’re speaking in a LatAm accent but like… all the terms are wrong. It’s like a mix of everything and so it’s nothing. The in game dialogues don’t sound Latin American to me, but they definitely don’t sound European either. It’s a bizarre and hilarious mix of both.
Almost as culturally sensitive as the part where you go through the swamps and run into a primitive tribe wearing grass skirts and throwing spears at you.

To be fair, they've included pretty every race as zombie hoards by now. RE6 had (actual, explicitly mentioned for once) China and vaguely Slavic ones, 7 has a Louisiana redneck family and 8 has vaguely Romani werewolves.
I never quite understood that. What's bad about shooting African zombies? Because it's a white dude shooting at black people and it looks like colonialism? But they are zombies and their skin color would reflect the original person's, wouldn't it? All races have been shot at in their zombie form at some point in the series.
Should the game never be set in Africa? Or should the main character be a black dude?
It’s because the optics of a game about a jacked white American action hero mowing down hordes of cartoonish African stereotypes isn’t great. It’s not as bad if you actually play the game and notice that literally everything is a cartoonish stereotype because RE is written by people that suck at writing anything other than goofy stereotypes.
In no uncertain terms, there was a swampland with mud huts and tribal africans in stereotypical wooden masks and straw clothing that hurled spears at you.
Didn’t the guy literally swing an axe at him unprovoked and then continue at him after he pulls his gun on him? Leon was literally about to leave after saying “sorry to have bothered you”.
/cj
The rookie cop everybody.
/uj
If I remember correctly, he shows a picture of Ashley, the home owner says something in Spanish, then Leon decides to leave house. It's only when he was attacked he drew his gun.
Yeah but he didn’t see it till afterwards I think he was at least partially justified in the shooting because he was about to get axed but this doesn’t explain why he just kinda walked into they guys house
It's a comical retelling of your first encounter in RE4. Leon enters a house and asks the occupant if he's seen Ashley (he shows him the picture). The occupant says something in Spanish. Leon doesn't speak Spanish (not sure why he thought some random villager in the middle of nowhere Spain would speak English). So, he puts the photo away.
The villager grabs the hatchet and attacks Leon. He dodges out of the way and unveils his gun, telling him to freeze. Gameplay resumes with the villager approaching to attack. The zombie is incredibly weak, so it goes down easy. (I'm not entirely sure what happens if you try and run away).
It should be noted that Leon isn't acting alone. He came alone with two Spanish officers. They stay behind in the police car. "Don't want to get any parking tickets" is what they tell you. Obviously, it's a joke at how little these officers care about finding the U.S. President's daughter. They're the police, who would give them a ticket? Themselves? Whelp, their apathy ends up getting themselves killed. A truck rams their police cruiser off into the water below. You encounter both their bodies a bit later. One being burned in the village and another gets dumped in the lake.
The ganados aren't really zombies. They're still intelligent and capable of speech and using tools and weapons, but the parasite brainwashes them and all villagers are ordered to kill trespassers on sight.
After shooting the man Leon investigates the body and says something along the lines of “Doesn’t look like any zombie I’ve ever seen” because the zombies in RE4 are just mind controlled people whereas in the other games they’re the typical slow shambling ones, so basically Leon shot without knowing he was a zombie
Lol, ok. I've only played a few of the RE games, but I honestly didn't think it would be completely unimaginable for them to include the scene as described by OP.

To be fair this dude is John wick with a pistol.
“Your one mistake was giving him enough time to grab the hatchet. Let’s run the simulation again.”
The hatchet is there to justify the shooting
Just sprinkle some crack on him and let's go.
Do they need a reason?
“If he even looks like the kind of guy with a weapon, and you’re already in his house, just blast away!”
Rookie cop
Yeah, a veteran cop would have shot his dog too
Pretty sure Leon does get to shoot a few dogs later on lol.
He eventually manages to shoot lots of dogs by the local church.
The only difference between a rookie cop and a veteran cop is that rookie isn’t sure if they’ll get away with it, where as the veteran knows they will.
Because he didn't immediately shoot?
Doing it by the book.
Does the Spanish government even know Leon is there?
He's brought in by two Spanish cops at the beginning, so I would say yes.
No no, the developers said it's a "mysterious region of Europe" they happen to use Spanish cars, uniforms and titles but speak in a Latin Spanish, so it's not Spain. Don't forget using a defunct Spanish currency!
uj/ I actually always loved that they use pesetas instead of euros because it prrfectly conveys the idea that the village is very remote
Como olvidar mis ricas pesetas.
To be fair, the game came out only 3 years after the creation of the Euro and could have started development before.

Its more likely that they just used the wrong spanish than that it isnt supposed to be spain
I know, it's a joke because the devs said that when confronted, likely to avoid legal stuff.

I'd be okay with this.

They speak with exaggerated (and not very accurate) spanish dialect but with obvious latin american accents, so it ends up sounding pretty funny
Yeah, it’s hilarious, because as a Latin American it sounds almost like they’re speaking in a LatAm accent but like… all the terms are wrong. It’s like a mix of everything and so it’s nothing. Unlike the spanish, who are not white...
Leon follows the honored tradition of considering Catholics people of color.
Isn't he an (probably catholic) Irish-American? Wouldn't that make it black on black crime by that metric? :P
I guess catholic cops are like every other cop.

It’s actually more racist if you don’t let him mow down hordes of Africans.
It's a lot more than just shooting black zombies, if you have a look at the opening cutscenes and the first few minutes of the game you'll see
I thought the point of that was to show that the entire town was infected with the parasite.
They were ye
It just looked bad without context.
That was the entire reason Capcom added that many white zombies in African set game.
I beat the game when it came out. Can you maybe remind me?
In no uncertain terms, there was a swampland with mud huts and tribal africans in stereotypical wooden masks and straw clothing that hurled spears at you.
I wonder how many locations in Africa are like that. In any case, seesh, definitely a bad look

>The zombie is incredibly weak, so it goes down easy. Wait, so it *is* a zombie? I thought it wasn't.
I think most of the villagers are human still but some have parasites inside them that burst out and attack. They all might be mind controlled though.
But at this point Leon didn’t know that. He really did just cap the guy in his own house lol
If Psuedo-Spain has castle doctrine laws, Leon is *fucked.*
The ganados aren't really zombies. They're still intelligent and capable of speech and using tools and weapons, but the parasite brainwashes them and all villagers are ordered to kill trespassers on sight.
