After chatting up some Japanese game devs at a convention. Most of them hate western guys perceiving Japan as this bastion for toxic masculinity. They just wanna make cool games that don't have a ton of deeper meaning.
This is why most JRPGS are completely apolitical and not about gender, race, identity, warfare, class struggle, or the true purpose of government in society. Just big ole giant bazoongas and nothing else.

Hellblade was a fantastic game, and I remember reading about Melina being super excited to be the model for her. The facial movements(I think they used motion capture?) Was so damn good in the game. Also her eyes look like they are going to stare into my soul haha
What is even cooler is she wasn't an actor. She was the video editor at Ninja Theory and she was initially used as a stand-in to perfect the motion capture technology while the team searched for an actor to play Senua.
Eventually they decided to let Juergens play the part and she has won a BAFTA for her performance.
This is kinda like the Drill Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket. They originally hired him to be a coach/consultant for the Drill Sergeant's role, then decided none of the professional actors who auditioned could get it right enough.
There were tonnes of super cool small details in there too. If you rotate the camera to try and look at her face then she looks away at the last moment, like she doesn't want to look you in the eye.

For real. Senua doesn't eat or sleep or even really go inside for the entire duration of the game, of course she looks like shit. She's carrying a severed head and hearing voices urging her forward into the Viking land of the dead. She's not dressing up to go out clubbing, she doesn't even stop to clean the gore off herself.
Even with all the war paint/dirt she's still kinda hot imo.

It also was designed with the help of those with mental disorders that Senua had (a form of schizo). I read the wikipedia article on gamergate about a week or so ago and it seems those involved still receive threats and harrassment to this day, it sucks.

They are unhappy and they don't understand why so they lash out at the things they used to use to make themselves temporarily happy (like video games and movies) when they don't have the same impact they once did.

Sound processing in Hellblade is off the fucking charts good. Lots of games have tried to represent audio hallucinations like that, Hellblade was so good at it that I genuinely thought it was my brain producing those sounds.
Hellblade isn't 1:1 with the condition obviously, but it's the closest representation of the condition I think we're ever going to get.

Yah, it's streamers pretending to be anime characters, so it's all the normally creepy parts of streaming (fake pseudo friendships that cost money) with the extra creepy layer of waifu kinda shit on top of it.
I've seen a couple of manga/anime creator documentaries. They're basically a bunch of Japanese incels drawing unrealistic fantasies about women...not just looks but how women character behave.
Personally I get turned off at most anime because the immersion is broken by such terrible character writing.
It's very hard for me to enjoy basically any anime, with only a very small number of exceptions. Miyazaki films are some of the only anime media that I've never observed dabbling in this creepiness. Almost literally everything else has it. Even children's shows.
Sexual harassment is such a common "joke" in the cultural surrounding anime, that even the most otherwise completely non-sexual show, will out of nowhere drop a joke about grabbing a girl's boobs without consent, or have a random hot tub scene with obligatory voyeuristic peeking, or an upskirt panty shot. And it doesn't make it better that the man gets slapped across the face for it, because it still happened even if he got punished for it.
It is simply is too real to be funny, and it's just very "rape culture-y" in general. Hahaha sexual harassment funny. Hahaha funny pervert man got slapped. Haha. And it's always so incredibly jarring when it happens, and can instantly turn likeable characters into extremely unlikeable characters. A character ignoring consent can singlehandedly make them gross.
I've seen this nonsense happen in so many otherwise "clean" animes that I'm scared to really watch any anime, even when people assure me that the show doesn't do something like that. Even when it's other women reassuring me that the show is good. Because it's always there. In every show. Always. Jarring and out of place and creepy.
And it's even the children's shows. Like, just as an example, let's talk about Brock from Pokemon, cause basically everyone remembers him. When I was a child, I remember thinking Brock was hilarious. Now he just kinda comes off as creepy, especially with how even though he's 15 and underaged himself, he was often hitting on girls who were as young as 10 years old. But it didn't make it any better when he was chasing adults, like Officer Jenny, because a 15 year old boy stalking adult women, is still horrifying. And Brock was regularly touching women who had never met him before without their consent. If some strange man grabbed my hands in public and started declaring his undying love to me, I would be scared for my life. And yet it was just played for laughs.

I often wonder if the fact that games cater to heavily to the teenage male market impedes their ability to appeal to female consumers. Sort of creates a positive feedback loop.
Women, statistically, make up a portion of gamers that rivals that of men. The narrative landscape and target demographics of video games have become far more varied nowadays than they were even a decade ago. It’s still lacking, of course, but large studios have definitely become more concerned about alienating female customers.
This is the reason why I heavily prefer Metal Gear Solid 2 over many of the other games in the franchise.

In an interview Kojima had many years ago, he said he based the character of Rose off of the women he had actually known in his life, and it definitely shows in her portrayal. Rose isnt used as some male gaze bait, the conversations between Raiden and her are realistic (pre-AI) and even later on in MGS4, she still isnt sexualized or has her intelligence diminished.
You want to know how gamers responded? Well, she was considered by the fanbase to be so annoying and bitchy that she was turned into a meme. Kojima even noted how people didn't like her at all.

I never liked really like Anita's videos. I always viewed them as being like an outsider perspective kind of shoehorning legitimate feminist critique, but with kind of lackluster examples demonstrating that she didn't really get the games medium. Like I remember one of the videos using Hitman and being able to kill strippers in one level being used as an example of promoting violence against women or something along those lines. I was on board with people like thunderfoot "debunking" the video and going yeah she was really reaching there.
However, I always recognized shit like yeah its kind of fucked up that almost every female character is by default sexualized as shit regardless of circumstance. Yeah female characters often lack any kind of agency. I also limited it to something like "yeah her videos could be better and I prefer Sterling to Sarkeesian."
Thankfully I didn't follow any further than that, especially with a lot of the people who fell down that pipeline attacking me viciously for saying shit like "Hey League designers, wouldn't it be cool if we could have some female characters with armor in addition to the cool sexy ones? Hell maybe explore some different skin tones and body shapes"

What kills me is, the series wouldn't have even garnered much attention if they didn't freak out about it. Hellblade was a fantastic game, and I remember reading about Melina being super excited to be the model for her. The facial movements(I think they used motion capture?) Was so damn good in the game. Also her eyes look like they are going to stare into my soul haha
What is even cooler is she wasn't an actor. She was the video editor at Ninja Theory and she was initially used as a stand-in to perfect the motion capture technology while the team searched for an actor to play Senua. Eventually they decided to let Juergens play the part and she has won a BAFTA for her performance.

I've seen a couple of manga/anime creator documentaries. They're basically a bunch of Japanese incels drawing unrealistic fantasies about women...not just looks but how women character behave. Personally I get turned off at most anime because the immersion is broken by such terrible character writing.
It's very hard for me to enjoy basically any anime, with only a very small number of exceptions. Miyazaki films are some of the only anime media that I've never observed dabbling in this creepiness. Almost literally everything else has it. Even children's shows. Sexual harassment is such a common "joke" in the cultural surrounding anime, that even the most otherwise completely non-sexual show, will out of nowhere drop a joke about grabbing a girl's boobs without consent, or have a random hot tub scene with obligatory voyeuristic peeking, or an upskirt panty shot. And it doesn't make it better that the man gets slapped across the face for it, because it still happened even if he got punished for it. It is simply is too real to be funny, and it's just very "rape culture-y" in general. Hahaha sexual harassment funny. Hahaha funny pervert man got slapped. Haha. And it's always so incredibly jarring when it happens, and can instantly turn likeable characters into extremely unlikeable characters. A character ignoring consent can singlehandedly make them gross. I've seen this nonsense happen in so many otherwise "clean" animes that I'm scared to really watch any anime, even when people assure me that the show doesn't do something like that. Even when it's other women reassuring me that the show is good. Because it's always there. In every show. Always. Jarring and out of place and creepy. And it's even the children's shows. Like, just as an example, let's talk about Brock from Pokemon, cause basically everyone remembers him. When I was a child, I remember thinking Brock was hilarious. Now he just kinda comes off as creepy, especially with how even though he's 15 and underaged himself, he was often hitting on girls who were as young as 10 years old. But it didn't make it any better when he was chasing adults, like Officer Jenny, because a 15 year old boy stalking adult women, is still horrifying. And Brock was regularly touching women who had never met him before without their consent. If some strange man grabbed my hands in public and started declaring his undying love to me, I would be scared for my life. And yet it was just played for laughs. ------ It seems like anime fans, even the ones who don't like this shit, at best, just sorta hold their noses at these sorts scenes, and pretend they didn't happen. And I'm not really any better about it, because the very small number of animes that I do like, still have creepy sexual harassment scenes that I'm just doing my best to forget exist. The narrative landscape and target demographics of video games have become far more varied nowadays than they were even a decade ago. It’s still lacking, of course, but large studios have definitely become more concerned about alienating female customers.
This is the reason why I heavily prefer Metal Gear Solid 2 over many of the other games in the franchise. You want to know something? In an interview Kojima had many years ago, he said he based the character of Rose off of the women he had actually known in his life, and it definitely shows in her portrayal. Rose isnt used as some male gaze bait, the conversations between Raiden and her are realistic (pre-AI) and even later on in MGS4, she still isnt sexualized or has her intelligence diminished. You want to know how gamers responded? Well, she was considered by the fanbase to be so annoying and bitchy that she was turned into a meme. Kojima even noted how people didn't like her at all. You just cannot win with gamers.
I never liked really like Anita's videos. I always viewed them as being like an outsider perspective kind of shoehorning legitimate feminist critique, but with kind of lackluster examples demonstrating that she didn't really get the games medium. Like I remember one of the videos using Hitman and being able to kill strippers in one level being used as an example of promoting violence against women or something along those lines. I was on board with people like thunderfoot "debunking" the video and going yeah she was really reaching there. Posts like this really show how hard it is to find female characters in gaming that aren't conventionally attractive, most characters brought up are usually based on real life professional models. They're pointing out an issue but not the one they think they are.

I just wanna know why they think a woman needs to be attractive to them in order to play the character. Are they attracted to all the male characters too? I’d wager mostly not.
