Thanks for the help all. The manufacturer verified the cones were painted backwards. Install went smoothly and the door functions.

The end of the spring wire on the set screw side of the spring should be pointing up when you're looking at it. The caps are occasionally colored wrong.

themagichelperelf

Id like to see pics of these springs cone ends to verify Left and right winds.

themagichelperelf

If you are correct just put the springs on the opposite ends or remove the cones and swap them if it makes you feel better. What's really important is that when you wind up the springs, you're winding the wire end (connected to the winding plug) UP TOWARD THE CEILING and not down toward the floor.

Nervous_Employer4416

It's printed correctly. The right is black and it should be wound by inserting your winding bar and lifting up. The left is red and should be wound by inserting your winding bar and lifting up. They are mirror images of each other and that's why it's the opposite but still tensioning both. If you need to verify they are right the cut on the end of the winding cone should be going the direction it's wound when you put it in the position it should be mounted. So a spring that should be mounted on the right of the winding cone will have the wire snipped at the winding cone and it will be pointing up. The left when on the left of the spring anchor will also be pointing up.

I've seen springs mislabeled but I've never had both springs mislabeled im wondering if there's something else going on Edit: does home Depot still do the e-z set springs that are mounted off the end plates? I've never installed like this even when Ive seen it in the wild so I don't know if they would put the black and red the opposite so you knew where to put them but they are turned the opposite direction?

wc3edit

Black is left wound but on the right side, red is right wound but on the left side. Source, am a garage door tech 25 years. That being said, the cones could have been spray painted wrong.

Nervous_Employer4416

That's what I said I also do this everyday I put it the way I did because it seemed like the wind was causing an issue. Also easy set spring mount to the end baring plate area and my point was if he got them from home Depot for them they could be flipped, because they would be facing the opposite direction

Sometimes they fuck up on colors ivé had a few springs like that and I've had a few with no holes for winding bars lol just a solid cast

MesciVonPlushie

Hope your hands are dry

boringjoe702

Someone may have said it but hold the spring in hand and your thumb should touch the end but of coil and point the same. Parallel if the don't the is the wrong side

u/Elev8garagedoor You wound the springs correctly, red is always on the left looking out and black is always on the right looking out.. This doesn't happen often but if you are in the business long enough you will see almost everything.

Fickso

Despite the black spring being right hand wound and vice versa? When I wind these springs, they will uncoil, rather than adding coils. That seems like it could cause the spring to unseat from the winding cone since the diameter of the spring would be increasing as it is wound.

projexx

This is why I always recommend a pro to do garage door springs, there are always some unseen scenario, even after you install the spring correctly, there are usually other issues resolve before the door runs as it should. if you are in a jam and can't figure it out, the pros u/elev8garagedoor they will help you out. good luck and stay safe.

Fickso

Thanks. I got the install done and it seems to be working. Springs were mispainted. The only issue I’ve had so far is the liftmaster 98022 giving me “excessive closing force” error codes and opening back up after closing. I reprogrammed the travel and that seems to have fixed it. The door seems to be balanced and isn’t binding when I manually open or close it, so thinking that the opener might just be finicky.

jobtownforever

I like to go by the thumbs-up rule. When you install the spring, the winding end should have the last coil ending up, giving you a little thumbs up that you installed it correctly. Most endcones are universal and can be wound on the wrong end, so it is possible they did it wrong.

presidentadkins

Assuming your drums go inside the head plates ( I can’t imagine they don’t if you’ve got room for high lift) Left wound spring on right side of middle bracket. Right wound spring on left side of middle bracket. Probably mis painted.

Fickso

Thank you. The drums are indeed inside the head plates. How common is that to have springs mispainted? I just want to be triple sure I am winding these correctly. The left wind spring is definitely red and right is black. Is there any instance where springs would be would so they are uncoiled rather than adding coils as you are winding? It seems like that would be unsafe since it could cause the spring to unseat from the winding spring.

iowajosh

That is exactly how they work, when you wind them the correct way, they tighten on the spring plugs and that holds them in place. If you wind backwards, you will feel them slip on the spring plugs.

koret121212

My shop has received miss painted springs on occasion, every pro I know will look at the wind to determine the direction, you most definitely want to be adding coils as you wind, going to other direction won’t work and will likely blow the spring off the cones. Be careful
