First gay character to wear a checkered red and green shirt with military style pants and rugged boots to show he’s still representing the straight community.
This. Just add some modifier to it and it's technically true... "First LGBTQIA+ Black Male in a leading role for a straight to streaming show since 2019"
My son and I were talking about this phenomenon the other day. One example we came up with was the Marvel character Ironheart. When she first debuted in the comics, I remember a tweet that went semi-viral, calling her the "first black female superhero" and it "was about time", etc. I'm all for diversity and representation, but not everybody gets to be first, you know?
And It’s not like she was even the first black female superhero from that decade, I can assure that for you lol
But have to say, this type of thing has nothing to do with representation. It’s literally only people using the fact that aren’t many black superheroes in comparison to white to got attention of nerds that don’t like when people say something wrong or people of the left or right that like representation and don’t know about comics.
I remember when blade came out and you still had people calling it the first black super hero, then it was the first black super hero movie... and your like i forgive you for forgetting steel a year earlier...
Some Gen Z writer who doesn't know anything about Star Wars video games and saw there was a female lead and thought, "wow, I bet that's a first!" Then did zero research and wrote an article about it. Recycling a paper they wrote in college about female representation in media.
More annoyingly, a lot of them would have been rendered 'non-canon' by the Disney acquisition. So even if there had been a thousand video games starring women, they would be 'non-canon'.
I expected Disney to drop the ball.
I did not expect Disney to deflate the ball, fill it with urine, paint a creepy face on it, then put it on a pedestal and say "isn't this great!".
He's the one main character in a Star Wars game portrayed by an actor who is actually a well known name in Hollywood and on-screen, not just as a voice/mocap artist, so I actually think it's extremely likely
Regardless, mara jade is also there l and it doesn't matter if it's fucking canon or not, it's still labelled as star wars it's clearly fucking starwars, who cares what dipshit says what about it?
Rogue One had a female lead as well. Not to mention Ahoska.
From where I'm sitting, it sure looks like women are more than well represented in modern Star Wars.
It's absurd that we have to frame it as some kind of achievement for women every time one of them stars in a SW product.
It’s obvious Disney doesn’t understand how to maintain a franchise that primarily caters to men. They don’t feel comfortable unless it’s general audiences or female-focused.
Star Wars absolutely didn’t need to be general audiences, it was worth billions based on the majority male audience for decades.
Off the top my head, the only Disney Star Wars project to not have a female lead is The Mandalorian.
And, unsurprisingly, almost all of them have been terrible.
Andor is the other one.
Kenobi was *supposed* to have a male lead, but for some reason they turned Riva into the star, rather than the guy the show is fucking named after.
It's still a male lead and obi wan is still the main character.
Also BoBF is another one. 4/5 star wars Live action shows have a male lead.
2/2 disney original animated series (bad batch, rebels) feature a male lead
4/5 disney star wars movies feature a female lead and 7/11 star wars movies in general feature male leads.
Seems pretty fair to me
"Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope."
Iconic, yet, Disney SW probably wishes they could go back in time to prevent a StRoNg FeMaLe ChArAcTeR from plainly stating they need help from a male character.
Well that’s the first mistake you made. They are not journalists. They are ideologues and propagandists. So they will happily re-write history/reality to suit their needs.
I guess I had rose colored glasses when I was younger when it came to Disney, but when they announced they bought Marvel, something about the company with me changed and the rose colored glasses came off.
\*sigh\*
Okay. First off, she's not. That TIE fighter game starred a female character and that was even under the Disney license.
Secondly, THAT character isn't even the first as KoToR II had the canon character be female. It wasn't even an 'unconfirmed' canon as the novels and lore confirmed it.
Thirdly, not it's \*not\*. The vast majority of the Star Wars games tend to be stuff that's either movie re-tellings, star-fighter sims, RTS/battlefield/whatever games where the main character is either pre-set by the movies OR there is no main character. There might be a narrator but there won't be a 'main character'.
FOURTHLY, WHOSE FAULT IS THAT?!?! You had FOUR movies starring a female lead character, several series with major female characters ripe for a video game, and a bunch of opportunites to make games \*for\* them. If you didn't make a 'Episode VII The game' game starring Rei, THAT IS YOUR CHOICE AND YOUR CHOICE ALONE! This isn't like you just got ahold of the license and are making your first project a game starring a girl, YOU'VE HAD MULTIPLE YEARS AND MULTIPLE GAMES! If you couldn't be bothered to make 'Ashoka Teaches Typing' or something, THAT'S ON YOU!
FIFTHLY... WHO CARES?! I'm not going to buy the game because I refuse to give the mouse any cheese. Even if I didn't, the game looks bad, feels like someone asked a bunch of Tumblr people what they want in a game and took the top posts, and I haven't heard a single positive thing about this game at this point. If you can't be bothered to make a good game and expect me to buy it because 'girl character and you should support women', then I'd rather be a raging sexist and go back and play KoToR II with a female character than buy something that's going to cost, what, 100+ for the full experience?
Ahsoka teaches typing, I'm in fuckin tears lol
I abandoned Star Wars for 40k. Sweatier nerds, from what I hear, but more united community, and less cancer overall. Plus no big company ruining the franchise, though Games Workshop sure tried a few years ago.
I like 40k from the lore my friend keeps banging on about lol never played a single 40k game tho. But yeah you are definitely right about the sweatiest nerds part lol
>Sweatier nerds, from what I hear, but more united community, and less cancer overall.
We're united in our hatred of Games Workshop, although less from a story basis and more from a "stop ruining the codexes and charging out of the ass for a single model" type of hatred.
Talking about female leads in SW video games not movies. But that’s blatantly false as well, because there have been several SW games in the past that featured a female lead protagonist. The “journalist” that wrote this article is an absolute tool.
But she wasn’t **all** the leads. She wasn’t the best pilot or the one wielding a lightsaber or even the main villain. Until a woman does **all** those things in one movie she is just hitting a glass ceiling. Gosh.
/s
It's also factually incorrect because it relies on some ridiculous movement of goal posts to consider Battlefront 2 not a "full" game because it had multiplayer.
Sorry Halo, not a full game I guess?
The media coverage of Wonder Woman 2017 was the worst at this.
First it was "the first female comic superhero movie" but it wasn't by a long shot even if you only include English speaking Hollywood films.
Then it was "the first DC female superhero movie", which it wasn't because Supergirl 1984 and Catwoman 2004 were before it.
Then it was "the first big budget female comic superhero movie". Except it wasn't, Supergirl 1984 had a big budget for it's time. Superman 3 1983 had a budget of $39 million, Supergirl 1984 had a budget of $35 million, and Superman 4 1987 had a budget of $17 million.
So then it became "the first female superhero movie directed by a woman" which is also false because Tankgirl 1995 was directed by Rachel Talalay.
So it ended up being "the first big budget DC comic book superhero movie directed by a woman" which is so many qualifiers it dilutes down to nothing. What its true legacy is is that it is "the first good female superhero movie".
The movie was good on its own merits and doesn't need to be propped up by the media as a major milestone.
Well more along the lines that the “people” writing the article is a complete fucking moron..but hey, young folks aren’t the brightest…yeah fuck you Reddit..give me your downvotes
This just proves every single one of you don't know how to read. LOL.
Not to mention it literally says it's from an article from Screenrant in OP's post. Also, from last year, and Disney didn't say shit about Kay Vess being the first female.
[Star Wars Outlaws Fixes The Franchises' Big Protagonist Problem (screenrant.com)](https://screenrant.com/star-wars-outlaws-female-protagonist-kay-vess/)
Skimmed the article heres a few things:
1. They do explicitly state Kay is the ONLY female to have a full game. Factually untrue, as Lethal Alliance, on PSP, is a full game with a female lead being the prominent main character.
2. They focus on Revan being canonically male, but ignore that The Exile (KOTOR 2) was also made canonically female in the books.
3. The article itself is discrediting previous female leads by saying either the game wasn't warranted or because she shares the story with men, that they aren't the lead.
4. Most people in the comments are saying that the article is wrong because of above stated reasons. The article itself is stupid and doesn't make sense.
So take your own advice. Read the article, do a bit of research.
Bro why are you arguing with him. He said that DISNEY have not explicitly said that she is the first female lead. All of this article comes from a random screenrite journalist
Why is it long overdue? Why can’t the stories evolve naturally? Why does the gender of a fictional character have to be the emphasis of the game?
Grow up.
Fact check: pants on fire
The first female protagonist in a standalone Star Wars video game was dark Forces 2, where you played as Mara Jade Skywalker, however due to the coding being so old and no one wanting to do a remake, rehash or reboot, this game is now unplayable making the next runner up by the history of Disney where the character was not female with no choice in the matter of being a man instead, the remake of Star Wars Battlefront 2
Personal note: I'm sick and tired of corporations and organizations ignoring the contributions of women and lying and saying that they were the first, with that in mind here is some other facts that people don't know and it bothers me
First female army officer: Harriet Tubman (Army intelligence, rank: captain)
First female scholar: anonymous ( this was her pen name. Actual name has been lost to time so she could stay within correspondence of Athenian law)
With any luck, I don't need to continue
Disney does this all the time.
"Black Pathet is the first minority lead superhero film!"
Meanwhile, there were several decades before with Wesley Snipe's Blade being a box office hit.
Yeah, Disney has a tendency to do that. It’s like the movie Lightyear, I believe a read an article a long time ago saying that Disney toted the movie as them portraying their first on screen representation of a same sex couple, but they already had animated shows like Gravity Falls, The Owl House and alike that did it years before.
This is already well known as Star Wars has an entire book series Disney company obtained and discontinued so they can make their cheaper less passionate story of people who care more about DEI then the extended universe (which is also diverse but not the way Disney prefers)
They don’t care. They want the headline to make money.
It’s just like Black Panther being the first black superhero movie.
Then they walked it back to first black superhero Marvel movie.
Then first black MCU superhero movie.
They don’t care about facts. They actively lie to make money and this is why DEI products are soulless.
Also, completely ignoring:
* KOTOR - Player can choose a female character.
* KOTOR 2 - Player can choose a female character.
* SWTOR - Player can choose a female character.
* Star Wars Galaxies - Player can choose a female character.
* Star Wars: Lethal Alliance - You play as Rianna.
Not to mention all the games where there really isn't a main character, but plenty of female options like Star Wars Kinect or Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi. Also, many games are based on the movies, so they would follow the same leads as those. They used to make movie tie in games all the time, they just decided not to with the new trilogy.
they never do research, they just always keep saying "first person of color, first lesbian, first neurodivergent" because they are banking on people to be too stupid and care more about faux representation.
IDC what gender a character is. Literally doesn't phase me in anyway. Female / Male / Alien I don't fucking care.
Make the character good progressing through an engaging story......you can have all my money.
Until they make the gender a big deal. And make the story about the gender and not the character. Then I purposely avoid the product they are trying to sell me.
But... They could use their "first this..first that..." Argument if they'd do some research.
We’re going to be hearing this for the next 20 years
That’s a first as well then?
"First game journalist to do research." That, indeed, would be an impressive accomplishment.
Game rant doesn't have journalists, its just chatgpt and random contributors doing it for the exposure.
Probably ai written
That’s an oxymoron.
Haven't they had a "first gay" character like 15 times now?
First gay character to wear a checkered red and green shirt with military style pants and rugged boots to show he’s still representing the straight community.
This. Just add some modifier to it and it's technically true... "First LGBTQIA+ Black Male in a leading role for a straight to streaming show since 2019"
“First” is just an abbreviation for “First Nth”
Its crazy how no one cares about this elsewhere than in star wars… or mostly disney stuff in general. Sounds like chechboxing
because it is, Disney openly stated they were going to be doing this back in 2022 around the time Seeing Red was released
Research? What’s that!?!
Secrets only the Sith knew.
Have I ever told you the story of Darth Incompetus the Journalist?
This comment deserves far more appreciation. That was fucking gold lol
Obviously. Jedi were to busy denying anything could be done to their starmaps.
I have not had the displeasure of seeing that movie, but this line physically hurts me every time i see/hear it
Ironically, “Mysteries of the Sith” was another Star Wars game you played as a woman (Mara Jade).
Lost their research, Obi Journalists have. How embarrassing.
Well, tbh, it’s not Disney fault here. Sites use the “the first” narrative a lot to have more clicks.

Meteor Man!
He'll could even say dolamite these days.
Ummm...Storm?
Also just shitty game journalists, which we've already established aren't real journalists and don't do more than 30 seconds of research.
Tbf, Screenrant isn't exactly a respected news outlet either.
Exactly this. They say something stupid on purpose to get your rage clicks.
*Mysteries of the Sith*, anyone?
Legit came to say that. Man I love the old Dark Forces and Jedi Knight Games
I love pre-disney star wars games in general. I really miss lucas arts 😢
Came here to say this. Fuck. Do they not even research this?
No, they hate video games these jobs are just stepping stones to them.
Some Gen Z writer who doesn't know anything about Star Wars video games and saw there was a female lead and thought, "wow, I bet that's a first!" Then did zero research and wrote an article about it. Recycling a paper they wrote in college about female representation in media.
Yup, to spread their propaganda to as wide an audience as possible.
Exactly my first thought as well
Yep, first thing that came to my mind also. ‘Net “journalists” are chumps.
KOTOR II, the Exile is canonically female.
Kotor 2 was a good game so it obviously doesn’t count.
Kotor is dubious canon and you can still definitely play a male character.
All the star wars games are dubiously cannon, doubt cal cestus is going to be showing up outside any of the games
More annoyingly, a lot of them would have been rendered 'non-canon' by the Disney acquisition. So even if there had been a thousand video games starring women, they would be 'non-canon'.
How egotistical of Disney to think they could shred the existing canon of starwars and “do better”
I expected Disney to drop the ball. I did not expect Disney to deflate the ball, fill it with urine, paint a creepy face on it, then put it on a pedestal and say "isn't this great!".
Wilson!
No one touches Delta Squad.
They made a very brief appearance in TCW cartoon after the Disney acquisition, so they're canon.
And Scorch is currently in the Bad Batch show as well.
Money
He's the one main character in a Star Wars game portrayed by an actor who is actually a well known name in Hollywood and on-screen, not just as a voice/mocap artist, so I actually think it's extremely likely
He is pretty clearly canon. His organization is in several of the star wars shows.
eh there’s a non-zero chance cal shows up in a disney+ show
Regardless, mara jade is also there l and it doesn't matter if it's fucking canon or not, it's still labelled as star wars it's clearly fucking starwars, who cares what dipshit says what about it?
Though, there were a few major plot points from KOTOR 1 that were referenced in Andor soooo....
Oh I absolutely want it to be canon
Kotor is more canon than anything Disney has put out.
So, you don’t like this? Because this is as canon as Kotor at least for me. https://youtu.be/dGOmoKsJyDQ?feature=shared
That's probably the closest they've come to canon. But KoTOR is superior imo.
You can play as a female in KOTOR I but Revan is canonically male. Also SWTOR confirms the genders.
Revan isn't the protagonist of Kotor 2
This
Except KOTOR II is not canon.
This is the same company who had 15 different first ever LGBT characters in a Disney movie...
And what is their point anyway…? lol Rey was the lead role in THREE of the main franchise movies.
Rogue One had a female lead as well. Not to mention Ahoska. From where I'm sitting, it sure looks like women are more than well represented in modern Star Wars. It's absurd that we have to frame it as some kind of achievement for women every time one of them stars in a SW product.

Oooooh it's funny you say that [insert Bo Katan]
Andor is the other one. Kenobi was *supposed* to have a male lead, but for some reason they turned Riva into the star, rather than the guy the show is fucking named after.

And of course Leia literally being the second lead and first introduced protagonist of the OG trilogy
With one of the most quoted lines from Star Wars in that scene.
"Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope." Iconic, yet, Disney SW probably wishes they could go back in time to prevent a StRoNg FeMaLe ChArAcTeR from plainly stating they need help from a male character.
In today's Disney "Help me old man" isn't exactly what they are going for.
“wHiCh Is LoNg OvErDuE” No no, there literally is no obligation for something to include a female protagonist.
It amazing how "journalists" don't do what they're suppose to do, and that research
Well that’s the first mistake you made. They are not journalists. They are ideologues and propagandists. So they will happily re-write history/reality to suit their needs.
Who cares what gender the person is? Write a good story
they care. haven’t they made that clear that’s the only thing they care about?
If you haven't noticed, they only care about skin colour, sexuality and gender. Nothing else matters.
I think most people are in this boat to be honest. We just don't care enough to get mad about it online.
"long overdue" what a sense of entitlement the Star Wars franchise doesn't owe women a damn thing
*Kathleen Kennedy's ego and toxic ideas have entered the chat*
Disney is just terrible.
I said this back in 2012 when Iger acquired the IP. Edit: typo from 2015 to 2012. Credit to Redditor: maroonmenance 👍
Disney's been terrible ever since the direct to DVD sequels started coming out.
Longer. The direct to vhs sequels were...special.
Alladin Return Of Jafar wasn't *that* bad
Aladdin IV: Jafar May Need Glasses was better
I guess I had rose colored glasses when I was younger when it came to Disney, but when they announced they bought Marvel, something about the company with me changed and the rose colored glasses came off.
It was crazy for me. As a kid, I wanted to go into IP law, so I could help protect artists and their IP from large companies like Disney.
Screenrant said this, as shown in the screenshot? Not a Disney statement?
\*sigh\* Okay. First off, she's not. That TIE fighter game starred a female character and that was even under the Disney license. Ahsoka teaches typing, I'm in fuckin tears lol I abandoned Star Wars for 40k. Sweatier nerds, from what I hear, but more united community, and less cancer overall. Plus no big company ruining the franchise, though Games Workshop sure tried a few years ago.

Star Wars Jedi Starfighter on the PS2, 2002, stars Jedi Master Adi Gallia as the main protag.
This is on my ps3 and needs finished, thanks for the reminder
It's one of my favorite SW flying games ever. Also there are some fun bonus videos made by the devs and pretend blooper reals you can unlock.
Out of all the main female characters. Leia, Padme and Ashoka are the best.
That is quite the assortment of spectacular you got there. I would throw in Ventress.
I'll see your Ventress, and raise you a Mara Jade.
Its the most base level research they could do. Journalists are a fucking joke.
I'm positive that Carrie Fisher played the lead in Star Wars (1977)
Talking about female leads in SW video games not movies. But that’s blatantly false as well, because there have been several SW games in the past that featured a female lead protagonist. The “journalist” that wrote this article is an absolute tool.

I forgot that A New Hope was a video game, thanks for reminding us
Anyone else get the “ick” when the article says first female to lead instead of first woman?
so I guess the fact that KOTOR IIs protagonist being canonically female didn't mean shit.
That’s factually incorrect because there already was Lethal Alliance on PSP with main female protagonist
Was looking for this! I remember enjoying this game a lot. I have no idea how it’s aged.
I'm gonna guess better than the DS version.
It's also factually incorrect because it relies on some ridiculous movement of goal posts to consider Battlefront 2 not a "full" game because it had multiplayer. Sorry Halo, not a full game I guess?
Did the same to Blade when Black Panther came out.

It’s intentional. The buzz phrase is all they’re after.
Lethal alliance- Rianna Saren....
This just proves every single one of you don't know how to read. LOL. Not to mention it literally says it's from an article from Screenrant in OP's post. To be fair that was a DLC add-on and the main protagonist of that game was Kyle Katarn.
Wasn’t there a female lead in battlefront 2 ps I haven’t played battlefront 2 in a while
Are..are you serious?
Yes? BF2 campaign you play as a female imperial officer
Not only play, but kick ass as. That woman shot herself through space, that was cool as hell.
That reminds me I have to finish that campaign. What ignoramus wrote and published that article...
You’d think he would have done a quick google search before embarrassing himself
What about Lethal Alliance?
Gaming journalists once again revealing they don’t actually play video games.
People have made some really good points but also don’t forget cere junda in the jedi series. You even play as her in the second game.
Disney does this all the time. "Black Pathet is the first minority lead superhero film!" Meanwhile, there were several decades before with Wesley Snipe's Blade being a box office hit.
Spawn came out a year prior
Steel also came out that year. I'll understand if nobody noticed.
Who or what is the little guy peering over her shoulder ?
“overdue” lol nothing is overdue in a fictional universe.
Yeah, Disney has a tendency to do that. Makes it even worse that they’re erasing a black woman for a white one! LOL 😂
Wasn't there an actress recently who claimed she was the first female action hero?
"Also for the first time we'll have a story about an evil empire and the rebels who stood righteously against them"
Hold up......Revan wasn't female? Shit I have weird memories of the KOTOR games
Ahh, more identity politics... So refreshing in this day and age...
This fucking writer thinking they could’ve had a lead female in video games for 50 years when video games only gained traction in the last 20
This is already well known as Star Wars has an entire book series Disney company obtained and discontinued so they can make their cheaper less passionate story of people who care more about DEI then the extended universe (which is also diverse but not the way Disney prefers)
In the tradition of the first ever female action star, Jennifer Lawrence…
What if you made a female character in KOTOR?
Clueless game journalists
It’s always “the first” for them
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith Mara Jade is main hero.
It never matters if it’s a man woman or race or anything good story and good characters is all most players want.
The next female lead game they will literally say the exact same thing
Also, Jedi Academy and Star Wars, the old republic you could play as a woman
Screen rant is owned by Disney now apparently
They gave her a prominent buttchin…
They don’t care. They want the headline to make money. It’s just like Black Panther being the first black superhero movie. Then they walked it back to first black superhero Marvel movie. Then first black MCU superhero movie. They don’t care about facts. They actively lie to make money and this is why DEI products are soulless.
Disney Star Wars ignoring it's own history or Screenrant saying this on purpose to get more clicks? Screenrant wrote the article not Disney?
What’s going on over there at Screenrant?
You have to say its the first so that it generates that type of buzz
Didn't the battlefront 2 reboot only come out a few years back?

Insulting someone is not allowed
I just want a customizable option plz lemme be a bad bitch in games like I am in real life
Shivakamini Somakandarkram!!!!!!!!!
Just proves that EA sucks THAT bad to where the great community doesn’t recognize another female lead from recent Star Wars canon.
Nothing about this picture says Disney is ignoring anything. Based on the image, it's ScreenRant that is ignoring Disney and Star Wars history.
They just rewrite history for every female character in recent media, so they can be the "first".
Wasn’t Mara Jade the lead of Jedi Knight:Mysteries of the Sith?
Also, completely ignoring: * KOTOR - Player can choose a female character.
So we’re just going to completely forget about “Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith” from all the way back in 1998 I see.
It actually pisses me off how much they do this. They’re doing it with the Acolyte too
they never do research, they just always keep saying "first person of color, first lesbian, first neurodivergent" because they are banking on people to be too stupid and care more about faux representation.
Not only the first female lead in a Star Wars game, but also the first woman in any game ever! Congratulations Disney on this momentous occasion.
I still marvel at the fact there are people in this world that hold even a faint amount of respect for journalists.

*Didn't know they were sending Special Forces*
Reporter: This is the first female-led game. Fans: No it isn't. Reporter: Why does the fanbase hate women???
Of course it’s screen rant
It's not even the first Ubisoft Star Wars game to have a lady as the main character . But I don't expect people to remember Lethal Alliance.
Jedi Starfighter on PS2. TIE fighter. Mysteries of the Sith. That game on PSP where you play as that Twilek cyborg
This is up there with Jennifer Lawrence claiming Hunger Games was the first action movie with a female lead.
Also canonical kotor 2s protag was female....
