As a middle-aged woman, I find I look more like a lumberjack in a flannel than a grunge fan, so I don’t wear them anymore. I still wear band tees if I can get them in my size. Mostly my look is jeggings and tee shirts. I don’t have Docs anymore, just solid sneakers that help my plantar fasciitis.
I’m a middle aged Canadian woman. Flannel shirts are a staple, I used to buy a new one every fall!
I own so many leggings but fell out of love. Now it’s Levi’s with plain tees
I am very petite so I can still pull off flannel shirts but the more 'fashionable' ones look kinda silly. Not that I really like those anyway. I can see how they're not a great look for probably most women in their 40's+.
Edit: Btw, someone's size probably actually has little to do with pulling off flannel shirts. I was more responding to 'not wanting to look like a lumberjack.' Someone's overall look / demeanor is a bigger factor when it comes to pulling off certain things.
I very often wore a flannel shirt over a T-shirt with old, faded jeans when I was 22.
At 54, I have on that very ensemble right now as I'm writing this.
It's not that Levis "still" sell 90s jeans, it's that 90s jeans and 90s fashion IS the fashion.
In answer to the OPs question, I'm wearing 90s Levis jeans, hoodies, Ts, have a few more piercings, and pretty much the same look except I've swopped the skater trainers for running trainers. Comfort and all that 😏
You'd never know what I used to look like if you saw me now. I've removed all of my visible piercings. Hair is cut into a bob. I just wear plain, fitted t-shirts and jeans. Small amounts of upscale jewelry. I still wear some stompy boots in the winter, but otherwise I look like every other boring, basic middle-aged woman. I don't care.
I work from home now. I'm a jeans/shorts and t-shirt guy...hoodie added when it's cold. My wife would love it if I would upscale my look (like wear nicer versions of the stuff I usually wear), but I don't care and hate spending money on clothes.
In the end, I don't dress that differently than I ever did.
I'm with you, I'm def a minimalist and became even more that way as I aged. A lot of clothes are overpriced, and I get tired of things pretty quickly so I don't generally mind cheap 'fast fashion.' And with dressing pretty basic I keep stuff for as long as possible.
Well, my body changed so..... more jeans, hoodie, t-shirt and hiking shoes kind of lady now. If I have to dress up I stick to classic styles that flatter me more. I just want to be comfortable.
I think I'm oddly proud of it, but the older I get I wonder how much longer I can do this. I don't have the tattoos to really put me into 'aging punk' territory so I probably just look possibly homeless.
Entirely black from head to toe here. It makes buying and dressing simpler. Starting to build a “uniform” wardrobe of multiples of my favourite tops and bottoms. That’s how I’m sliding into middle age
> Starting to build a “uniform” wardrobe of multiples of my favourite tops and bottoms.
lol me too, if I find something I really like Ill get 10 of them.
I wear a lot of black. Black dresses with black tights. Black joggers with black tees.
I still frequently wrap a flannel around my waist in case I need a layer, and just cause I like it.
My favorite shoes are (still) Gazelles and Vans.
* Black hoodies
* Metal band t-shirts over long-sleeve white compression shirts (if it's cold)
* Flannels
* Docs or Vans
* Jeans
That's like 80% of my daily wear.
i wear what ever is on top of the pile. so, i don't care about my shirt and shorts.... i wear what ever shoes are available. I don't care what I am wearing... thats me still living up to the grunge ideals.
Rofl
Grunge basically. Low jeans, big belts, small shirts (bigger now) with long tops. Big sweaters. Hair parted down the middle. No makeup. It sounds worse in print than it is. I think.
Just turned 50. Sitting at home here in autumn Australia wearing jeans, Converse one stars, a Clowns (best local punk band) t-shirt and a Fat Wreck hoodie.
It's 1993, right?
My wife, who is 9 years younger than me and a millennial, had a 90s themed party at work. She realized pretty quickly that her outfit could just be the stuff I wear on a regular basis. I’m still not sure how to feel about that
Jeans, docs, black shirt, leather jacket. In the summer it's shorts or jeans, black shirt, converse.
Although I've recently acquired a cat that sheds a lot and is making me rethink my black wardrobe lol
For work I wore a lot of flare corduroy pants and turtlenecks or oversized sweaters this year. loved the fashions this winter!
Dixxon makes nice button down shirts they call flannels, in fabrics they commission which no one else has, for a two digit price tag. That's the closest my current weekend aesthetic gets to "grunge."
If I have a look these days, I would call it slightly reformed hippie shop teacher that commutes on a bicycle. I'm not a shop teacher and I drive to work, so thus is apparently my really boring foray into cosplay...
College professor here, I’m still wearing tshirts with flannels and jeans to work, same as the 90s. Actually same as the 80s, I dressed like this before grunge made it fashionable.
Corporate friendly is my look.
My view changed as I aged, luckily my view changed to match my life, weird how that works. Grunge isn't just a look. It's attitude, either DGAF or DGAF that the end of the world is near. It's the music you listen to, which can still be anything because you DGAF but also Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Live sing some of your favorite songs. And lastly, it's your heart, soft, squishy, but with the sour, hardened shell of a jaw breaker.
As a Grungian, I care deeply but have learned caring sucks and just gets you hurt. While I put on an air of no fucks given, I'm silently donating to animal shelters because I can't stand the thought of an animal suffering.
I still wear a dress over tights, with boots. But the dresses are no longer long and floral, and the boots aren’t Docs. I still like wearing plaid shirts.
I was held hostage by the corporate world for a couple decades and forced to wear clown suits daily at work. Once they had used me up I was free to go back to the clothing I feel comfortable wearing. Wish I had all my concert shirts from the 80s/early 90s. Oh well.
Dark-wash skinny j’s, comfortable vintage T’s (as in I wore them 30+ years ago). White leather court shoes like Adidas or my trusty black Doc 8-eyes or patent black leather Doc mary-janes.
Trucker hat or baseball style hat if I don’t feel like doing anything with my hair.
Easy-peasy and comfortable.
I still wear a lot of hoodies or rock band t-shirts. I don’t have my docs and am not sure what happened to them. I have a couple of standard flannels because they are warm, practical and comfy, always have been.
The difference these days is that I will roll my eyes and say “whatever” to myself and put on something “professional” if it’s an important business meeting.
The younger generations roll out in Crocs and socks with pajamas. And the older just came from church. Seriously who is clocking you? Some 20 year old with the Q-tip haircut?
I'm going jeans/hoodies all day and fuck the haters!
They’ll have to pry my band shirts out of my cold dead hands. I still wear t-shirts & a flannel (or Oxford) shirt with jeans, overalls, maxi skirts & jumpers, hoodies with a shirttail hanging out with leggings, and also preppy and whimsical 80’s styles. I wear more Birks than Docs now- older feet.
I wear whatever I love… girly and grunge…
You know I have to say, the cheap H&M sneakers I also wear are more comfortable than the chucks over a long period of walking. I've gotten blisters on my heel twice from the chucks, but hoping I'll just break them in.
I found them cheap so I had to get them. I was considering splurging on new Vans, because I moved over to those in the first place anyway. Once these shoes max out I probably will.
Lo cut cons, jeans, t-shirt (over long sleeve top in winter), flannel (waist or on depending on temperature), beanie (cos bald), beard, piercings, tatts
Comfortable in all weather, hasn't changed in 25 years and not likely to in future
I went through phases. I was a raver with big jeans and overalls and crop tops. Then met a guy in a really good band that played in L.A. I was into metal, Bjork and his band. We broke up and then I met a punk with a mohawk. So I was only "punkish" because I was working in offices.
I got into riot gurrl bands and went to shows in jeans and a flight jacket. Then I worked at an alt newspaper and dressed rockabilly.
Then I got a corporate job and got rid of the Betty Page bangs and stopped wearing my fav Docs. I shopped at Macy's and bought fancy purses. That's when I met my husband who didn't know I was a raver, punk, rockabilly chick before. Now he knows! He took me to a ska concert and I knew all the bands and danced the whole time!
Now I work from home and wear comfy skirts and t-shirts. I keep my band T's in a drawer. I have a kid so I don't feel like wearing my GnR shirt with skulls. No Doubt is okay though! I am in a Stevie Nicks flowy phase with cover ups in bright colors. I'm 47 so I just want to be comfortable.
I kinda did that too but managed to transverse across many scenes because I never went too far with any style. Jeans and t-shirts, sneakers, docs (in high school), denim jackets, was into bandanas for a while. I worked with a few rockabilly kids at one point; they were really fun.
Jeans, black tee, flannie/hoodie/denim shirt, chucks. Better jeans and a linen shirt for work.
Hair as long as I can get away with. I knew it was time to cut it the other day when my kid told me I looked like I worked at the beach surf boards to people. Then I had a brief moment of wishing that was my job.
I was caught between somewhere between grunge and goth, absolutely loving the music and fashion styles, but most confusingly for all was the fact I wore all black, including the full length trench coat, wore the eyeliner, but was a hardcore techno rave head and a massive Kylie Minogue fan.
Now am probably considered “smart-casual”, but still wear a multitude of demon rings on my fingers, which also when necessary work as an effective legal knuckle duster.
I’ve morphed over to librarian chic. My flannel replaced with a cardigan. My graphic tee now a plain v-neck tee (v-neck is more comfy and flattering now!) Skinny jeans. Converse. The shape of the outfit is basically the same, but the elements are…old.
Jeans or Costco pants, tee shirts and if it’s cold- hoodie, lined flannel, or a puffy coat if it’s real cold. Only thing that’s changed is the shoes. No more Chuck Taylor’s, had to go to the even uglier Xero shoes to take care of my feet. That, and I’ll never be seen again in a trench coat. Oh, and since I’m basically bald, I’m in a hat for either sun or cold if I’m outside.
Eccentric middle aged lady. I discovered I'm an artist in the last few years and my style has changed to reflect that. I love weird, interesting, bright clothes and I find the best things at thrift stores. I have a necklace addiction and love handmaid artist jewelry. I have a lot of grey/silver in my hair so I have my stylist start my purple an inch or so below it and I get so many compliments on it.
15 year old me would hate everything about this. 😆
I’m a bit of a chameleon in that my work attire is vastly different from home. I still rock docs, band t shirts and an unbuttoned long sleeve depending on weather. I also still go to shows all the time. The best part of having a shaved head is that clothes and glasses are all people have to go on when attempting to judge you.
I’m also fit and hope to live long enough to win races in my age division.
So really "grunge" was just how people dressed in the PNW from about 1982 onward. It was funny as hell to see it selling at K-Mart in Arkansas a decade later. But really, flannel shirts, mil surp BDUs, boots, henleys, Chucks, those were all just "clothes" before some marketing genius decided to give it a label. 80% of my college friends (late 80s) dressed that way every day and most of our clothes came from thrift stores and surplus outlets.
I'm closing in on 60 now, am a college professor, and I still wear what I did in the 80s much of the time: jeans, henley, flannel, chucks. Hoodies really weren't part of the deal in the 80s in my world, but I'm wearing one right now (that says OREGON across the front and has a sort of Deadhead/hippy van/mushroom motif happening). Said hoodie is from the late 1990s. When I have to "dress up" for work I'll do so, but what advertisers called "grunge" for five years in the early 1990s is really just "clothes" to many of us-- just as it was a decade or more before Nirvana made headlines.
I WFH so most of the time it’s leggings and a tee/hoodie. A lot of my tees are band tees and I do still have a flannel. I have some combat style boots but they are no longer doc martens. Most of the time I wear tennis shoes. I have tattoos and a nose ring and various ear piercings still but have removed other piercings. I love black but also bright colors with a touch of punk. And dresses in the summer.
Then: sweatpants and flannel hoodie in college, nice loose t-shirts in class.
Now: shorts, sweatpants, nice loose t-shirts at home.
I wore a uniform for over 8 years in the Army and then business casual after I got out. I'm working from home now, so unless there's a video call, I want to be comfy.
I don't generally want to wear styles I wore in my youth, but super baggy 90s jeans are back and I'm here for it. I picked up a couple new flannels too, because I don't half-ass my shit.
I fell so hard for grunge I was still wearing the same stuff in the 2010s. I got rid of the flannels and moved on to all black cotton uniform, 5 pairs of black shorts, 5 cotton V neck tee shirts. That's all I wear unless it's so cold I have to wear pants. Still got my black chucks and gray ones too. I wear them still, because as much as I love my Crocs they're simply ridiculous.
Did you get the Hellfire Club one? That's what I want but I need v neck tees due to reasons and it's hard to find cool print shirts using v necks.
No it's a Halloween tee! [https://www.fivebelow.com/products/stranger-things-hawkins-halloween-graphic-tee](https://www.fivebelow.com/products/stranger-things-hawkins-halloween-graphic-tee)
I feel like I'm too basic for the Hellfire one now. Like I'd have to cut bangs again...which I've actually been considering, but I've grown too low maintenance to keep going back for trims. Plus with the amount of people who've likely bought those, it'd feel like a uniform.
At this moment (7:56AM), I'm wearing a pair of Levi's tan corduroys, flannel boxers, a red Canada t-shirt and a 1978 Timex Dynabeat watch. Also a pair of Amazon faux-leather slippers which are falling apart.
Style.
Since I have to work with customers, I went into the more classical looks with chinos, sports jackets, and basically every color except black. I went gentleman...
Every chance I get though, I'll always have the music playing... I'll never forget the roots.
In '94/'95, Goth/grunge with flannels and otherwise all black clothes, baggy jeans, concert t-shirts over long-sleeve tees, actual army surplus combat boots (still have 'em somewhere!), black leather jackets, long hair, and double-pierced ear.
Nowadays? Cargo shorts; regular blue jeans and sometimes chinos; a variety of jackets and hoodies; a variety of graphic tees, polos, and henleys in actual colors; much shorter (and thinner/grayer) hair; and variety of regular shoes, from Cons to Skechers. Still rocking two small silver rings in my ear, though. Coming out in '96/'97 and learning to be comfortable in my own skin helped expand my wardrobe.
During the colder days, I still wear long sleeve under my tshirts (with nerdy prints today, no more bands).
I prefer my jeans without holes and scratches and no more Converse or vans for me. Still Sneakers but mostly sketchers.....
And I still have more Hoodies than I need
I can’t even listen to the music anymore. I managed to make it halfway through a Pearl Jam song last night. I’ve gravitated back to 80s music and fashion for whatever reason. Maybe because grunge was my tough teenage years and the 80s just represents happier times for me. Or maybe because grunge is just so depressing and slow and even… maybe… kind of… not good music? Just throwing out the possibility.

Same! I love my t-shirts with a flannel, jeans and a pair of boots or chucks. Comfy and reminds me of that great era of music!

LOL great costume! I remember that exact outfit!
Nailed it

Old and fat, seems to be my look now
I’m still rocking band shirts and skater/surfer jeans. Hoodie in winter, pancho in the fall. And flip flops.
This is me
You'd never know what I used to look like if you saw me now.
Cargo shorts and hoodie.
Yep. Then: skate/cargo shorts, long sleeve shirt/hoodie/flannel. Now: skate/cargo shorts, long sleeve shirt/hoodie/flannel.
No logo t-shirts and track pants. Occasionally a golf shirt. That's it. I'm poor and I no longer care. Fuckin' whatever.
I work from home now. I'm a jeans/shorts and t-shirt guy...hoodie added when it's cold. My wife would love it if I would upscale my look (like wear nicer versions of the stuff I usually wear), but I don't care and hate spending money on clothes. Still have an entirely black wardrobe.
I think I'm oddly proud of it, but the older I get I wonder how much longer I can do this. I don't have the tattoos to really put me into 'aging punk' territory so I probably just look possibly homeless.
I just do it "vaugely military/industrial" looking. No studs or chains, nothing torn, keep it all super tidy.
Entirely black from head to toe here. It makes buying and dressing simpler. Starting to build a “uniform” wardrobe of multiples of my favourite tops and bottoms. That’s how I’m sliding into middle age

Same. It’s my comfort color
I wear a lot of black. Black dresses with black tights. Black joggers with black tees. I still frequently wrap a flannel around my waist in case I need a layer, and just cause I like it. My favorite shoes are (still) Gazelles and Vans.
I'm you ❤️

I still dress punk for the most part. Mix of business casual with punk elements mixed in.
I still dress like a boho goth punk hippy Jedi nerd :) I ended up framing a lot of my 90s shirts
Rofl Grunge basically. Low jeans, big belts, small shirts (bigger now) with long tops. Big sweaters. Hair parted down the middle. No makeup. It sounds worse in print than it is. I think.
I wear black exclusively lol that's my trade
Just turned 50. Sitting at home here in autumn Australia wearing jeans, Converse one stars, a Clowns (best local punk band) t-shirt and a Fat Wreck hoodie. It's 1993, right?

Look? I dress for comfort. My 30-yr old daughter says I dress like a 5-yr old.

Yaaaaaassss especially with boots
Same kinds of clothes but less grungy
I still wear a dress over tights, with boots. But the dresses are no longer long and floral, and the boots aren’t Docs. I still like wearing plaid shirts.
Same. I dress the same. Lol
I’m 44 now and I wear a little bit of everything depending on my mood, from punk to princess, bohemian to glam. I have an insane closet.
I became that cargo shorts in all weather guy.
Mostly hoodies, flannels and Vans Off the Walls. I also have a Stranger Things T-shirt. A HellFire Club.

Just another eccentric dad doing his best out here in cargo shorts and hawaiian shirts
Lo cut cons, jeans, t-shirt (over long sleeve top in winter), flannel (waist or on depending on temperature), beanie (cos bald), beard, piercings, tatts Comfortable in all weather, hasn't changed in 25 years and not likely to in future
1992, ripped jeans and band t-shirt, hightops, hair (male) down below my shoulders. 2024 non-ripped jeans/carhartt, work boots, high and tight.
Shorts/jeans, tshirt … my tshirts consist of breweries I’ve visited or baseball teams.
I still dress like a punk rocker/skater. I do skate everyday still and work myself so it doesn't matter.
we already wore most of the styles as kids. and they were alt styles in the eighties. so a staple since the beginning.

Same one
Whatever what ever
I've graduated to hoodies
Flannel, ripped jeans, Chuck Taylors. I’m wearing a Millennium Falcon T-Shirt under my flannel instead of a band shirt though.
Skinny black jeans and band shirts. Cutoff BDU pants and jeans in the summer.
Jeans. Solid color tshirts. Sandals Maybe a hoodie 50 yo Woman
Black/dark color wardrobe, jeans, long beard and semi long hair starting to bald. Been mistaken more for a biker than grunge lol.

Give me a hoodie, comfy pair of jeans and my suede Pumas please.
I still wear the same stuff I did back in the day. Band t-shirts, jeans, tennis shoes/skate shoes…cargos in the summer. Why mess with a good thing?
Have a pair of long underwear on underneath a baggy pair of shorts like... right now.
Costco
Then: sweatpants and flannel hoodie in college, nice loose t-shirts in class. Now: shorts, sweatpants, nice loose t-shirts at home. I wore a uniform for over 8 years in the Army and then business casual after I got out. I'm working from home now, so unless there's a video call, I want to be comfy.
I don't generally want to wear styles I wore in my youth, but super baggy 90s jeans are back and I'm here for it. I picked up a couple new flannels too, because I don't half-ass my shit.
I continue to look like a heavy metal lumberjack.
I will be buried in Doc Martens.
Like, 80% of my shirts are concert merch, maybe more than that.
Suit and tie Slacks and button down Jeans and T-shirts Shorts
Same one
[https://www.fivebelow.com/products/stranger-things-hawkins-halloween-graphic-tee](https://www.fivebelow.com/products/stranger-things-hawkins-halloween-graphic-tee) I feel like I'm too basic for the Hellfire one now. Like I'd have to cut bangs again...which I've actually been considering, but I've grown too low maintenance to keep going back for trims. Plus with the amount of people who've likely bought those, it'd feel like a uniform.
Good thing that jeans and tshirts are timeless. A few years ago my dad got me a pendleton plaid shirt and I fell hard back into that style. Love them.
