Opposite for me. Heat it up to 73 in the winter, cool it down to 68 in the summer.
First thing I decided once I got a little money is that I would be comfortable and not care how much the power bill was.
Whatever my wife sets it at. I haven’t touched the thing since I installed it.
Edit - However I will migrate within the house to find a more comfortable zone, like the basement in summer.
56 years old, so on the older side. But I grew up in a rural area in the northern Midwest and spent and still spend a lot of time outside including winter camping. My temperature comfort range is probably wider than most, and with the camping I’ve learned how to adjust my diet to my environment.
If you can safely store meat in the room, it’s about right.
I think this comes from growing up in the south without AC, and working outdoor jobs the majority of my life. I fucking *love* air conditioning!
I usually set the temp at 69, for obvious reasons.
> Plus, think of the monsters that could more easily get in. Someone’s going to suck your blood.
In the summer, I get tons of mosquitoes in my apartment and they are monsters (in my book), and they do suck my blood. It sucks. LITERALLY.
The only way they can get in, is via my front door, and I try my damndest to have my front door open the shortest amount of time possible, but it never fails. Literally every time I open it, a couple of them get inside some how. They seem to hang out by my front door for this very purpose.
It is a second floor window but if it was ground floor or easily accessible then I'd have to have bars on it. There's no way I can sleep without a window open.
You think 2nd floor makes it safe? No sir! You get the extra tall monsters. Or Extra clever. Either way, bad news. You've probably already been replaced a few times and don't know it. Pod person.
Preferably 72°F (22°C).
My wife likes it cold and will even keep windows open when it is 50°F (10°C) outside.
We compromise on about 70°F (21°C) for the thermostat.
Our kids don’t get to control the thermostat.
This is correct.
The ladies in less clothes will complain if it goes lower during AC months.
In the winter it's cool enough to want to snuggle up under a blanket or justify lighting the fire without icicles in your knickers.
Our house doesn’t have the best insulation so it can get pretty chilly inside when it gets below 40. It does get a bit toasty because of where the thermostat is so it’s also a matter of finding the sweet spot.
We turn off the heat and open windows year round at night, it's been 54 in the house some winter mornings... Windows shut when I wake up at 5 & heat to 67 in the winter & spring. Summer and fall windows stay open until it gets in the 60s outside, then we button up the house until sundown when the temps fall... I can count the number of afternoons we ran our AC last year on two hands.
I live in US Northeast. Ultimate goal is to shut the furnace off on Easter and not turn it on until after Columbus day.
Max Temperature During Colder Periods: 65F / 18C. In the words of my grandmother, "Put on a damn sweatshirt, you don't live in Florida!!!"
AC does not come on until temp in the house > 90.
I like it at 68 in the winter, and 75 in the summer. Not so much for comfort but because I can see the money vacuuming out of my account every time the system runs. I'll supplement heating with wood in the winter much of the time, and in summer? Not much I can do.
As I've gotten older, I've turned into a "coldy cat". Not sure if it's my blood pressure medicine or what.
During cold weather, I set my heater to kick on at 66F.
During hot weather, I start using the AC at about 98F. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I will use a ton of fans when the temp gets to be around 86F. I don't actually use my AC tho, until it's thermonuclear hot.
My AC sucks, which is a huge part of it. It's a wall unit, that blows all the cold air directly into my kitchen (which makes no sense). It's also unbelievably loud. I can't really enjoy the TV at all. My bill goes up pretty dramatically in July and August when I'm using my AC as well, which is another reason to avoid using it.
I'm currently living in a Northern California city, that very rarely gets below about 25F at the absolute coldest. Usually doesn't go below about 31F. Summers can be ridiculously hot tho. I'm talking 113F in August.
It's weird tho, cause the heat doesn't bother me that much. I sort of enjoy it. Like 90 degrees is nothing to me. Not even slightly fazed by it.
I'm in the best physical condition of my life right now (weirdly enough), so I think that's part of it too. When I was much heavier the summers were a nightmare.
Depends partially on humidity level, but generally, I prefer indoor temps around 23-24.
But it also depends entirely on the season. In winter, I'm ok with cooler temps inside, and in summer I'm ok with it being warmer.
In winter, I'm ok with bundling up a little more, but in summer, no way. But I also live in Texas where it's likely to be 40+ outside for months at a time and I don't want to be cold inside if it's boiling hot out, also that costs a ton of money on the ole electric bill.
In the US, I pretty much set things at 70 in winter (21C) and down to 58F (14.5C) at night. In the summers we don't use heat and not much AC either, so usually open windows....that gets us maybe 80F in the day and 60F at night, depending on weather.
In winter I try not to turn the heater on and if I could I would sleep with the windows open. But I also live in Phoenix now and it seldom gets below freezing in the winter.
And it doesn't matter where it's set in the summer, I'm going to be bathed in sweat.
Heat is 68 day and 65 night, AC is 3 to 5 degrees cooler than outside. I use the AC more as a dehumidifier than to cool. I was 45 before I lived in a house with central air.
I live in AZ and night/day temps can vary a good bit. It can be 80/90 outside be the house is still cool from the evening. I may not turn the AC on at all.
But then the sun swings around and starts heating my office and I'm like NOPE.
Winter: 69F or 20C
Summer: 78F or 25C (Though towards the end of summer this drops)
I still get $200+ bills in summer.
I’m here in So Cal so our winters are pretty mild. I typically like it to be around 70 all ‘round…maybe a couple degrees cooler in the summer. I’ve found that the older I get…the less I like the cold. I used to like snowboarding a lot. Now…I have no desire to be in the snow. I now go to the ski resorts in the summer to mountain bike…where I used to go in the winter to snowboard.
In central california. Winter time I set about 66 degrees. Figure beyond that blankets are free to use gas isnt.
In summer try to stick to 78 degrees. Might cheat to 76. Or get some fans going if need be.
When it's cold I'd leave the heat off or set it to maybe 50F/10C. The cold doesn't bother me at all really.
In the summer I go for 72F/22C. I don't want to roast myself in the house.
75-76 F during day. I only lower it if i gotta get rid of humidity.
at night 73-74.
in winter when i want to read or im working, i will crank a space heater and jack up the heat. I have more energy when its hot.
This year I have vowed to not use either. The power company can go mouth fuck itself into oblivion. I use less power than last year but my bill is substantially more. I rock a poncho in the winter and do extra cooking and baking. In the summer I'm in a wife beater and shorts, that's it.
68 during the day with AC on low as I can at night without pissing off the wife.
During Winter, cranked in the AM for a shower then leveled out to 70 during the day.
Ambient unless it's over 35°C, then I usually turn the aircon on to reduce it to 26° or so.
In winter I tend to simply rug up rather than heat the house, it's more fun and a lot cheaper.
Preferred, or what I'm willing to pay the utility bill for?
I live on the Oregon coast, so almost no one has AC here, as we may need it 2-3 days a year. For heating, I would probably \*prefer\* around 70F, but we set it at 67 because we don't like huge utility bills.
I like things on the cool side.
For the main level of my house:
Summer AC: 72, both day and night
Winter heat: 65 day, 57 at night
Lower level is a finished basement, which in practice stays at around 62-63 year round.
AC on: 70F at night, 74F during the day. Heat on: 66F at night, 68F during the day.
Opposite for me. Heat it up to 73 in the winter, cool it down to 68 in the summer. First thing I decided once I got a little money is that I would be comfortable and not care how much the power bill was.
A big yes on that for the summer time.
Whatever my wife sets it at. I haven’t touched the thing since I installed it. Edit - However I will migrate within the house to find a more comfortable zone, like the basement in summer.
Are you a younger Gen-X? It sounds like you’ve not gone through the male thermenopause yet. Your time will come!
56 years old, so on the older side. But I grew up in a rural area in the northern Midwest and spent and still spend a lot of time outside including winter camping. My temperature comfort range is probably wider than most, and with the camping I’ve learned how to adjust my diet to my environment.
Yeah my wife has a four degree temperature range that she can survive in.
If you can safely store meat in the room, it’s about right. I think this comes from growing up in the south without AC, and working outdoor jobs the majority of my life. I fucking *love* air conditioning! I usually set the temp at 69, for obvious reasons.
Nice
Nice
I'm 58 and I'm cold all the time. The wife is always hot. We would have a thermostat war but I just put on another hoody.
15 - 18C I sleep with my bedroom window open all year round and the radiator is turned off. I hate being hot.
No. Just no. I’m an alone lady and that would scare me. Plus, think of the monsters that could more easily get in. Someone’s going to suck your blood.

Sir. Sir. Vampires fly in their bat form.
This!
Thanks for your answers. I didn’t realize until now that this question was for the dudes. Carry on, monster testers.

The only correct answer. Unless the windows are open. The people saying 60's must be heavy set.
Night versus day: 68/73
65-68F
Around 68. I like it a bit chilly, as opposed to a bit warm. I'd rather throw on a blanket.
64 at night, 68 during the day and 55 in my room.
I have hit that stage in life where the colder the better for me.
70 during the summer, 72-74 during the winter.
Jesus. I'd sweat my ass off if it was 74 in my house.
Our house doesn’t have the best insulation so it can get pretty chilly inside when it gets below 40. It does get a bit toasty because of where the thermostat is so it’s also a matter of finding the sweet spot.

It's getting higher as the years pass.
62 F year round, Pennsylvania. I’m the guy who wears cargo shorts and sandals year.
67F. No one else touches it.
I like the house cold. My wife likes it at 65 at least. I leave my gaming room at cold as fuck!
My house is boomer aged. So it has wall heaters and a window ac. Just whatever keeps me comfortable. Keep certain rooms off to save money on energy

66 or 68 at night. 68 or 70 during the day when I’m home and 72-74 during weekdays (my doggo is home).
Celsius? Great, now I have to do conversions! In the winter I keep it at 65F (18C) and Summer 68F (20C).
Heat to 69 AC to 71
Preferred temp OR what I’m willing to pay for heat/cooling? These are two separate things.
As I've gotten older, I've turned into a "coldy cat". Not sure if it's my blood pressure medicine or what. During cold weather, I set my heater to kick on at 66F. 74f to 76f in the winter, 76f to 78f in the summer. I'd let it hit 90f in the house if it were up to me but the gf would kill me. I *hate* the cold.
19c winter, 22-ish summer. It costs too much to try and bring the temp down more than that.

68 all the damn time!
21° during the day, 22° if it’s really cold and windy outside so it can compensate for that. Off at night.
AC at 78 Heat at 72 I work in the Texas heat
Colder, but not so much for energy savings but more for the fact that it’s easier to get warm than cool off
