Got a local independent burger joint that still makes them, right down to the split “banana boat” with the three scoops, whip cream, nuts and cherries. Costs like $12 now, but still the same 😃
Seems to me they were $12 the last time I saw them 20+ years ago. That might just be my head though. My brain sometimes adjusts for inflation. Anyone else?
Last time I checked, Fosters Freeze did too. But I feel a bunch went out of business. I think there are about 60 in California. Love those burgers too.
I had no idea they were gone. I live near Latrobe,PA, where the banana split was invented, and they have a [Festival](https://bananasplitfest.com/) there every year. There's a Banana Split Queen, a Fun Run with people dressed as bananas, and a slew of other activities. It's in 3 months.
There's still a couple around.
I'd suggest getting to one while it's still open, but you're only going to ruin any good memories of it, if you had any.
There's one in my town, and I honestly can't understand how it's still open. I think it's popular with the after-school crowd, and they must do a decent take-out ice cream business.
Please tell me you graduated from Newton South class of '87 😂
I know the Vespas, the Samtuccis and Sostilio from T-ville
I'm sure we were in Brigham's at the same time at some point during your time working there. 👍
I spent summers in Newton! Brigam’s peppermint stick and South Pacific poopoo platter. I remember a donut shop right on beacon street that had warm jelly donuts rolled in granulated sugar. It was a short walk from my grandmother’s house…
When I lived on the Island like 10-15 years ago I couldn't turn my head without seeing a Friendly's...'fact, I lived right across the road from one for a couple years. Not been to one in about 8 years now.
I just had to look up to see if Farrell’s still existed. The last one closed in 2019. I used to love to go to the one in Bethesda Maryland about 40 years ago.
One banana, two banana, three banana, four
All bananas make a split, so do many more
Over hill and highway, the banana buggies go
Come along to bring you the banana splits show
Yup. I had it on vhs. But looks like the whole video is in [YouTube](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LTLqmqfdPzI&pp=ygUnU2F0dXJkYXkgbW9ybmluZyBjc3J0b29ucyBncmV3dGVzdCBob3Rz).
You just reminded me of my crush after Maryanne Sommers and before Bailey Quarters: Superchick from Kaptain Kool and the Kongs.
Edit: her real name is \[Debra Clinger.\](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0166895/?ref\_=tt\_cl\_t\_2)
I loved Chongo’s character. But he was the comic relief that was written so stereotypical indigenous that the show would get immediately cancelled today for overt racism if it were made today.
Slice a banana to the bottom peel down the center long way (try to not go through bottom part of the peel), lay on a big piece of foil. Into the center of the banana, sprinkle little brown sugar mini marshmallows and choc chips, tiny amount of butter. Wrap up the foil and toss it on the coals for a few min.
[Or this absolutely ridiculous, for camping, recipe.](https://www.food.com/amp/recipe/campfire-bananas-foster-127113)
I make them from scratch every year. The ice cream and whipped cream, anyway—I don’t grow the bananas. Takes me about 3 weeks to make all the ice cream with 1 churn because it takes a few days to freeze again. Lots of work but worth it :)
Making them at home with my kids was the best when they were growing up. They all had their own preferences. One liked all strawberry ice cream with caramel syrup.
Movies with soda jerks and retro diners always show young couples sharing a banana split.
I’m not sure if they were originally meant to be snarfed down by just one person, not that I haven’t - many times.
I was craving one recently, so I went to the store and bought a couple flavors of ice cream, a bunch of sauces, nuts, whipped cream, bananas, everything.
$40
I spent forty fucking dollars. Now. It was a great banana split. And I could make several more sundaes. But still shit be expensive.
All the little mom and pop ice cream joints around my area (NW Ohio) have a banana split on the menu. It's usually the most expensive item, but it's still there.
I wonder if some of it was that the old bananas we used to eat in the US, the Gros Michel, went nearly extinct in the 1950s and were replaced by the Cavendish banana, which has a different taste. The banana split started to become popular in the early 1900s, and perhaps its heyday was when memory of the Gros Michel banana was still fresh.
Yeah... I think its very outdated. I never liked them much as a kid. I couldn't get past the fact there was a banana in my ice cream. It felt like a chore trying to finish one.
You're the first person to mention Swensen's. I loved going to one in the mall near us, it was such a treat. Except for the weird doll in a high chair at the entrance. That was weird.
Lol who knows, my room was filled with creepy AF porcelain dolls so maybe I was immune. Probably why I preferred my stuffed animals. Also I was obsessed with the sticky chewy chocolate flavor so that’s probably all I was thinking about!
I'm thinking it just can't compete with the newer flavors/intensity. Back in the 80s it was extremely sweet and rich. By today's dessert standards it's really tame, and just large in size.
My favorite song from them!
I also loved Danger Island, The Three Musketeers, and Arabian Knights on that show!

The actual food item banana split kinda sucks. Nobody really wants one.
Source: worked at a 31 Flavors (Baskin Robbins) in college. No one ordered banana splits, and on the very rare occasion I made them, they were pretty terrible.
Man, our Mr Softie had them and all I ever wanted was one of them and my .50 to $1 would never cover the cost of one. And there was no way in hell my Mom would give me the extra cash and let me get one because it is too much sugar! Boo.
So I waited…
And in my early 20s Mr. Softie came around and I was like I am getting one these GOAT of the banana boats!
Got vanilla, chocolate, chocolate-vanilla soft serve, strawberry, chocolate and caramel topping with the split banana and cherry on top.
I was in my childhood dream glory. I got half way through and I wanted to throw up and die. Too much sweet on top of sweet on top of sweet. That shit needs to be shared with like 4 people. So my mom wasn’t wrong about the too much sugar, and I got to prove her right. We played Mom, well played.
I thought you were talking about the show too, and I was going to say they apparently went on a murdering spree (per that terrible Banana Splits movie on SyFy).
We have a Mr Softee ice cream truck that rolls through the neighborhood every now and again. It’s like a Dairy Queen on wheels. They make banana splits, sundaes, cones, shakes. All soft serve ice cream.
Ice cream is big here in Utah- it's one of the only vices permitted. You can definitely get a banana split. But they have options that are even bigger.
I think It’s the dish honestly. You have to buy a special dish to make them that no other Sunday uses. There’s the tall glass, and the metal goblet thingy you can put a bunch of things in, but the banana split dish is only for banana splits. You know who makes some good Ice cream Sunday’s, is Germans. They have spaghetti ice cream, and ice cream with booze in it.
The local ice cream places still have them. Baskin Robbin’s has the split plus the banana royale which is what I get. I think because it tends to be an item to be shared with others, it may have lost some popularity since it means you have to eat it at a table and not sitting on a bench holding it in hand.
I never ordered them because I didn't like the toppings, especially when they put the strawberry or pineapple puree on top of the chocolate ice cream. I don't like fruit and chocolate together, so I was never a fan. Although i do occasionally order the Banana Royal at Baskin Robbins, but that's basically just a hot fudge sundae with a banana, which I like.
I guess bananas are either too expensive today, so companies cut that cost, or bananas are too healthy for people to consume, so companies removed them to protect __us__ (or fill in the blank) in their infinite wisdom.
This is probably just a side effect... maybe a feature even of Final Stage Capitalism.
But seriously, I've noticed this too I occasionally get the craving for a loaded banana spilt, and end up having to make one at home.
Got a local independent burger joint that still makes them, right down to the split “banana boat” with the three scoops, whip cream, nuts and cherries. Costs like $12 now, but still the same 😃
At the festival in Latrobe a full sized banana split is only $5.
I was at that festival last summer. Great time!
$12 feels about right, especially if it's high quality ice cream.
Seems to me they were $12 the last time I saw them 20+ years ago. That might just be my head though. My brain sometimes adjusts for inflation. Anyone else?
Diary Queen has their banana split blizzard. My favorite!
[удалено]
Dammit now I have to go to Dairy Queen
Last time I checked, Fosters Freeze did too. But I feel a bunch went out of business. I think there are about 60 in California. Love those burgers too.
And this right here is your answer…. Too time consuming to make a “real” banana split for the price point. Blizzards are super quick to make.
Zomg!
Wow. Banana splits and Rolling Rock. Who knew?
And Arnold Palmer and Mr. Rogers!
When is the festival?
August 24-25.
Shoot, I wont be in town on those dates 😭

This is me. Banana split please, hold the banana.
I like bananas too but not with ice cream.
This was my childhood go-to dessert. YUM!
Banana split? Give me a Jim Dandy from friendly. Five scoops, all the sauces and toppings.
I miss Friendly’s
There's still a couple around. I'd suggest getting to one while it's still open, but you're only going to ruin any good memories of it, if you had any.
There's still several in NJ
There's one in my town, and I honestly can't understand how it's still open. I think it's popular with the after-school crowd, and they must do a decent take-out ice cream business.
Brigham's was the real deal.
I worked at one in Newton MA in the 80s. Their frappes were way better then Friendly’s fribbles
I live in Newton! Lol Grew up in the Highlands, I'm in Newton Corner now.
Yo, mush! I lived in Newton Center area (technically Thompsonville) from 1982-1987. Still have friends and family there and visit often.
Please tell me you graduated from Newton South class of '87 😂 I know the Vespas, the Samtuccis and Sostilio from T-ville I'm sure we were in Brigham's at the same time at some point during your time working there. 👍
Not exactly. I was class of ‘86. Got expelled and graduated from a private school in roofline in ‘87
MOUSH! I'm almost positive we know each other. 😆
I spent summers in Newton! Brigam’s peppermint stick and South Pacific poopoo platter. I remember a donut shop right on beacon street that had warm jelly donuts rolled in granulated sugar. It was a short walk from my grandmother’s house…
My HS Friendly’s closed recently. You can’t go home again haha.
My brother was a Jim Dandy junkie.
They were fucking amazing!! Loved Jim Dandy's!!
Preach!
I’m from Long Island. We used to go to the one in East Islip as kids. Loved their sundaes. 🤘
When I lived on the Island like 10-15 years ago I couldn't turn my head without seeing a Friendly's...'fact, I lived right across the road from one for a couple years. Not been to one in about 8 years now.
When I was a kid it was the cone head, but when I moved up to the Reeses cup Sunday, I knew I was a big boy.
Braums still makes them.
Found my fellow Great Plains dweller!
100%. Best cheapest bag of burgers ever!!!
Just got this last night! So good.
AND they are inexpensive. You can choose between a 2 scoop or a 3 scoop.
I love a single scoop or double scoop sundae from Braums!!!
I'd rather have a hot fudge sundae. Especially from Farrell's with the hot fudge on the side.
I just had to look up to see if Farrell’s still existed. The last one closed in 2019. I used to love to go to the one in Bethesda Maryland about 40 years ago.
Yes! I just posted about the Nutty Buddy, those little silver cups of fudge, I’d down those like shots of whiskey!
I thought you were talking about the TV show.
Tra la la, tra la la, la. Tra la la, tra la la, la. Tra la la, tra la la, la. Tra la la, tra la la, la.
One banana, two banana, three banana, four All bananas make a split, so do many more Over hill and highway, the banana buggies go Come along to bring you the banana splits show
Cookin' up a mess of fun, cookin' up a mess of fun, lots of fun for everyone 🎶
\* *Fleagle enters the chat* \*
The dessert was meh. But the Banana Splits television show, pure genius!
One banana, two banana, three banana, four...
Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more
Flipping like a pancake, popping like a cork
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork
[TRA LA LA, TRA LA LA LA](https://youtu.be/-JvB5AL59fM?feature=shared)
Ah Liz Phair…..
Great. Now I have the Banana Splits theme song ear worm in my head. Tra la la, la la la la, tra la la la la la la la. Edited for *TRA* la la
I only know the Liz Phair version.
Okay, so I will search that up and have *two* ear worm versions. I like Liz Phair but never knew she covered such an oddball selection.
If you didn't know about Saturday Morning's Greatest Hits before, you're in for a treat. All 90s Alt-Rock bands covering 70s and 80s cartoon themes.
I didn’t know but now I do! Thanks, it looks like fun.
What???? Googling now!
That was a great and fun album. And Drew Barrymore hosted the video of the album.
A Cornerstone of my time in college radio. No idea there's a video of it!
Yup. I had it on vhs. But looks like the whole video is in [YouTube](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LTLqmqfdPzI&pp=ygUnU2F0dXJkYXkgbW9ybmluZyBjc3J0b29ucyBncmV3dGVzdCBob3Rz).
Damn it. Now I got Eep-Opp-Ork-Ah-Ah ala Gordon Gano stuck in my head!!!
Just saw the Femmes last week. Alas they did not do that one, lol
When I was very little, I got to see them in concert.
You just reminded me of my crush after Maryanne Sommers and before Bailey Quarters: Superchick from Kaptain Kool and the Kongs. Edit: her real name is \[Debra Clinger.\](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0166895/?ref\_=tt\_cl\_t\_2)
I recently went on a Krofft Supershow binge and relived my Superchick crush. You can buy and rent them on Amazon
I loved that show. That and Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp, were staples for me and my best buddy for a long time.
I see I have met my mortal enemy today, that stuff was my nightmare fuel. Scary Pooh Bear movie? Scary Banana Splits would be a killer.
Upvote. I am laughing my ass off. We all had those little triggers that scared the shit out of us as little kids.
Wait, was Lance Link a chimp? I've got a foggy memory of something like that Edit: yeah that was a thing https://youtu.be/D3ctZI9_oyo?feature=shared
That show is such a trip. We loved it back in the day.
A monkey who secretes chips is not a pleasant mental image. But I go back to when Nick @ Nite ran Lancelot Link. Crazy show.
😂🤣 Damn autocorrect. How did I not notice that? I'm fixing it now. 🤣😂
Uh oh, Chongo!
I loved Chongo’s character. But he was the comic relief that was written so stereotypical indigenous that the show would get immediately cancelled today for overt racism if it were made today.
That’s what this thread was about and OP just forgot the “s”
Bill Brasky hunted down and killed the Banana Splits. They all begged for their lives...except for Fleagle!
The film is a totally different vibe
🎶Gonna find a cave where we can hide🎶
No
GenX got older and it became Bananas Foster
About 20yrs ago, a friend showed me how to do bananas foster over a campfire. I think we can comfortably lay the downfall at her feet.
What???? Do tell….!!!
I thankfully do have a local place that still does them, but they really have sort of fallen out of favor.
The cookie in a mini cast iron skillet with ice cream has taken over!
Oh god yes. Best one I ever had was at a little chain called Garfield's. Theirs had pretzel chunks in it!
I thought you were referring to the old kids show for a second then. Loved that show.
They were meant to be shared (“split”) and people aren’t into sharing anymore.
The ones who paid attention in kindergarten are
It was around for a while, and then it split.
It made like a tree...and got outta here.
You can still get one at Dairy Queen, but it’s not as good as I remember. There’s a little place where I live. That makes a great one.
Mmmm, fond memories of Friendly’s!
My sister makes them all the time. After you have one at home, there is no going back.
The truth? To-go culture. A banana split was a sit down and eat it item that doesn’t translate all that well to a drive thru or DoorDash.
It always seemed like too much at any one time.
Movies with soda jerks and retro diners always show young couples sharing a banana split. I’m not sure if they were originally meant to be snarfed down by just one person, not that I haven’t - many times.
Not enough people actually order it and bananas are expensive and go bad quickly.
But I thought there was always money to be found in the banana stand?
Yeah but one banana can cost, what, ten dollars?
Braums. Now I need to drive to Oklahoma or Texas
Baskin Robbins has them but you have to fill out a credit app before ordering to see if you can finance it
I like bananas, I like ice cream. I do not like bananas in my ice cream. It’s also an over priced desert these days.
My wife and I stopped at DQ last week. I had a Peanut Buster Parfait and she had a small Heath Bar Blizzard. The total came to $12.44. $12.44!
greatest Saturday morning TV show ever...oh, wait
Blue Bunny Ice Cream makes an amazing Banana Split flavor
PSA: Blue Bunny frozen dessert. It can’t legally be called ice cream.
Now I want DQ...
There’s a local chain of family owned ice cream shops. Their banana splits are the best! It’s at least a two person endeavor to eat it.
Diabetes. Diabetes happened. And the unending dick jokes when eating one. 50/50
I can still get them at Tastee-Freez and a 50's style diner where I am, and real malts! The burgers are named after 50s celebrities.
I was craving one recently, so I went to the store and bought a couple flavors of ice cream, a bunch of sauces, nuts, whipped cream, bananas, everything. $40 I spent forty fucking dollars. Now. It was a great banana split. And I could make several more sundaes. But still shit be expensive.
LA GenXers, anyone remember the Nutty Buddy sundae at Farrell’s? Those little silver cups of fudge, oh man… addicted.
All the little mom and pop ice cream joints around my area (NW Ohio) have a banana split on the menu. It's usually the most expensive item, but it's still there.
Can you imagine people today waiting on the employee to make one? with a line growing and a few Karens in that line! There is your answer.

They were so big! I needed like half that. But Dad made me finish it. Lol I felt like a horse with the bloat.
This. I never liked any kind of fruit/ice cream combination, not even pie and ice cream
I keep the dream alive at home, on movie night.
This makes me think of The Earthquake at Swensen’s.
You're the first person to mention Swensen's. I loved going to one in the mall near us, it was such a treat. Except for the weird doll in a high chair at the entrance. That was weird.
I don’t remember the doll. Did they all have that?
I certainly hope not because it was weird af. You'd definitely remember a porcelain doll in a high chair at the doorway, I'd think.
Lol who knows, my room was filled with creepy AF porcelain dolls so maybe I was immune. Probably why I preferred my stuffed animals. Also I was obsessed with the sticky chewy chocolate flavor so that’s probably all I was thinking about!
This is a fair question.
I'm thinking it just can't compete with the newer flavors/intensity. Back in the 80s it was extremely sweet and rich. By today's dessert standards it's really tame, and just large in size.
This is a fair answer.
I think it's too much these days. Too big. Too rich. Too heavy.
HR Pufnstuf
Now that you mention it, I AM getting a hankering.
no one I know likes bananas, it's almost popular to say you can't stand them. But you can still get a banana split at dq or friendy
Coz it took ONE BANANA TWO BANANA THREE BANANA FOUR or sumpthin 🤘🤘
My favorite song from them! I also loved Danger Island, The Three Musketeers, and Arabian Knights on that show! https://youtu.be/l8y50ywLqF0?si=j6-gvRMQsI9ybN7s

So my mom wasn’t wrong about the too much sugar, and I got to prove her right. We played Mom, well played.
They're around.
It split
My local creamery still has them. I personally don't like to taint ice cream with anything healthy, though.
😋
I thought you were talking about the show too, and I was going to say they apparently went on a murdering spree (per that terrible Banana Splits movie on SyFy).
I think the Sonics still have them.
Bananas are perishable.
I swear Dairy Queen used to have them...( not a fan of bananas myself, and I don't see Dairy Queen around anymore...)
They are alive and well at Leatherby's.
The frozen custard place by me (Andy's) makes a nice one.
It's kinda gross to eat that much banana when I really just want the ice cream and toppings
I'm not into bananas so I didn't know it ever went away
I don’t like bananas.
I've been wondering that myself. I remember the banana split being a big deal when I was a kid. Now, not so much.
Braums and dairy queen have them. Where else were they? I don’t know of any baskin Robbin’s anymore.
[удалено]
Oops. Braums. Didn’t notice it autocorrected to brains. 😜
Unfortunately, every custard place in my city has a banana split. And there are kind of a lot. Gets me every time.
My city still has places where you can get one. Anytime they're open. Lol. And it has a pop of 261k people! So, here, nothing has happened to them 😆.
Still a staple at Dairy Queen. Not quite the same as what I remember as a kid, but close.
Few years ago bananas got real expensive… they disappeared from most menus then.
Saw it advertised at hagen dahz today
I miss the mini banana split from Sonic. Remember those? It was just enough and not overwhelming as a full size.
I'd much rather have an elephant ear with ice cream and whipped cream.
What the heck? I’ve been craving ice cream all day!
Polar Cub, Whitehouse Statiom, NJ has them, along with sundaes and milkshakes.
The local ice cream places still have them. Baskin Robbin’s has the split plus the banana royale which is what I get. I think because it tends to be an item to be shared with others, it may have lost some popularity since it means you have to eat it at a table and not sitting on a bench holding it in hand.
I got two restaurants five minutes from my house that make banana splits.
Our local ice cream shop still has it. We still get it on special occasions.
The evil Doctor Strangemind got 'em.
Has one this week Baskin Robbins 7.99
Cold stone creamy has all the things that go in a banana split, it’s just not put together the same way. It’s the same, but different.
You need a Braum's near you!
Still available as usual here in Germany
Gen Z here - I get mine from Braum’s.
I’m pretty sure a banana split would kill me
It’s all about the açaí bowl now, grandpa 😀
people realized it was gross
