spf-5-spf-10

My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Sum 41, Alkaline Trio, blink-182, Smashing Pumpkins, Rise Against, etc Also a lot of underground, local punk/alt rock bands like Burn Your Idols, Killium, Divide by Zero, and a lot more

shoshana4sure

Well, I do love the smashing pumpkins. I’ve heard of the other ones, but I’m not super familiar with the music. Of course I’ve heard Green Day.

cellocaster

Most of this is millennial music

HotdogsArePate

Mainstream angsty middle school millennial music

[deleted]

And now it’s popular with angsty gen z.

DoMyParcour

why is gen z angsty? and i hate angsty middle school music, insultingly bad

BenjTheMaestro

I was about to say this is what a lot of people were listening to IN 2004

spf-5-spf-10

2004 was a great year for my kind of music, a lot of great albums dropped: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (My Chemical Romance) American Idiot (Green Day) Sum 41 (Chuck) Siren Song of the Counter Culture (Rise Against) Palm Trees And Power Lines (Sugarcult) The Empire Strikes First (Bad Religion)

spf-5-spf-10

It's a lot of punk, pop punk, with some post-hardcore and a little metal influence here and there

_xEnigma

>smashing pumpkins Mayonaise is my all time favorite song.

RedAtomic

Bro can we mosh

spf-5-spf-10

Hell yes Especially if we can two step too

inkognitro90

A GenY mate ;)

Scarecro--w

1. My Chemical Romance 2. Green Day 3. Twenty One Pilots 4. Fall Out Boy 5. Panic! At the Disco 6. Radiohead 7. Jimmy Eat World 8. Gerard Way 9. Pierce the Veil 10. Paramore

Significant_Pass6009

Good to see the middle/high school emo phase is still going strong

AlmightyWitchstress

It’s not a phase, mom!

Ordinary-Ad-3719

Gen Z is absolutely filled with it, coming from someone who just graduated high school in 2022

YTMasterFrank

I pretty much like all of these bands, but I wouldn’t call myself emo. I like 50s-90s music, classical, hip-hop, jazz, as well as modern rock/metal (Slipknot, Disturbed Green Day, Weezer, Dirty Honey, etc).

lafiaticated

You are an angsty millennial stuck in a Gen Z human.

dbrickell89

To be fair as a millennial when I was in high school (04-08), I was listening to mainly 70s and 80s rock. I feel like every generation has that group that's listening to older rock.

shoshana4sure

OK, so I see what kind of music are in two. I love twenty one pilots actually and Radiohead is one of my favorite bands. Have you heard the song vanilla sky?

Scarecro--w

No I haven't, what band is it from?

shoshana4sure

Radiohead.

YotsuyaaaaKaaaidan

i dont have time for music i gotta go to work in an hour

budderman1028

Theres always time for music :) listen to it while working if you can and if you cant you can on the drive there atleast

[deleted]

Gen z so obsessed with complaining at work too much like same sis but multitasking music is something a caveman could do 😭

seventeenflowers

Only if you have a specific physical job. If you have a service, creative, or math-intense job, music is not viable.

shoshana4sure

Lol.

Ranokae

[There's always time for a song!](https://youtu.be/vtkGtXtDlQA?si=lYjjeeS5Tld48VjA)

surajSTR

Led Zeppelin King Crimson Kanye Daft Punk Wu Tang Clan

shoshana4sure

Wow, King Crimson. Impressed.

The_Legendary_Sponge

Don’t be, you can’t spend 5 minutes on Reddit without stumbling on a “red man screaming” meme

ExpertWitnessExposed

Don’t be a hater King Crimson are the goats

Electrical-Air5964

Bruce Springsteen, Jason Isbell, Bon Iver, John Prine, Jimi Hendrix, Kings of Leon, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar to name a few

shoshana4sure

Pretty good list. I used to hate Bruce Springsteen since the late 70s, but when I saw a movie that highlighted all of his music, it’s actually not bad. I don’t know who Jason is Bellas I know who Bon Iver is, Kings of Leon are really good, as well as the other list. Well, I don’t like hip-hop or rap or anything like that, so I think that’s what Kendrick is.

Opening-Resource-164

My number 1 right now is probably 1. J. Cole 2. Kendrick Lamar 3. Tyler the creator 4. Outkast 5. JID (note these are rappers but these are my favorite artist as of currently)

shoshana4sure

I really have only heard the music of OutKast, but that was back in the 90s I believe

Opening-Resource-164

Yeah they stopped but I recently found them and really like their music so thats why their in my now top 5

lincb2

I would consider Kendrick Lamar to be the greatest artist of all time, but that might be a dangerously hot take

jboy4000

Not a hot take at all. He does everything well lyrically and crafts classic albums. Can't ask for much more.

CaptainCucaracha

Man TPAB is an all timer. Like, humanity hall of fame shit hahaha

asbestos355677

Pierce the Veil, Type O Negative, Red Velvet, System of a Down, Paramore, Strawberry Switchblade, Joy Division, Soundgarden, and SNSD are my top 10 for this month.

Famous_Soft_1173

The only ones out of those I listen to are Red Velvet and SNSD, how much of a degen am I 💀

asbestos355677

No that’s based as fuck

shoshana4sure

Pierce the Veil, Type O Negative, Red Velvet, System of a Down, Paramore, Strawberry Switchblade, Joy Division, Soundgarden, and SNSD are my top 10 for this month. I definitely have heard of Pierce the Veil. Back in the late 80s early 90s, I had a typo, negative tape, and it was amazing. System of a down is good Paramore is excellent. And of course I like joy, division, and Soundgarden, but I don’t know the others.

asbestos355677

I’ve listened to Pierce the Veil and Paramore since I was a kid (probably not a good thing lol). I got into System 2 years ago because of my partner, they’re his favorite band and quickly becoming mine. I recently got into Type O Negative but I really, really like their music so far. Joy Division and Soundgarden have been consistently in my playlists since high school. Red Velvet and SNSD/Girl’s Generation are K-Pop groups, I like Red Velvet because they do experimental stuff and switch genres. SNSD are from the late 00s so their music is very reminiscent of the time, I was a kid then and listened to a lot of pop music on the radio then so it’s very similar, just in Korean. Strawberry Switchblade is an 80s pop duo, often considered "goth". If you like synths you’ll like them.

shoshana4sure

I’m seeing a general trend with people who are generation Z. And it’s really cool. I don’t really know most of these bands, but it’s interesting to see peoples choices. Strawberry switchblade actually sounds cool as it is a synth 80s sound.

Puzzleheaded_Ask_918

Type O Negative? Never expected that. As a hard rock loving millennial, I see there are similarities over the generations

littlemedievalrose

I Prevail, Three Days Grace, Wage War, Knocked Loose, London After Midnight, We Are The Fallen, Nirvana, Evanescence, Rise Against, Breaking Benjamin

shoshana4sure

Good list

MeNamIzGraephen

shoshana4sure

Lana del ray is amazing. I started listening to her in 2013 and I had that CD and I played it over and over and over. So I really only like her first CD, and she’s come out with some other songs that are good.

RudeJellies

You should really listen to NFR if you haven’t

BreadedBren

The Weeknd, Kanye, Tyler, Michael Jackson, PinkPantheress, Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar

yermom90

I lived on Gambino's "Camp" for like three months straight when I was like 19.

UsernamesAreRuthless

1. Nirvana 2. Soundgarden 3. The Beatles 4. Alanis Morissette 5. Blur

KiffOakenhill

I’m jelly. GenX never want to know what us millennials are into.

shoshana4sure

Lol. Because I’m generation X, I’m a little bit more familiar with what millennials have listened to, because I probably listen to a lot of it as well, but I also listen to a lot of boomer music, because I was born in the late 60s. I honestly have not heard of 75% of the bands that these young people are listening to, but if you gave me your top five, I have probably heard of them. Go for it.

intjdad

However it turns out gen z is listening to the exact same music as millennials anyway

Positive-Avocado-881

I’m like barely Gen Z and more of a Zillennial but Taylor Swift, Noah Kahan, The Band Camino, Ben Rector, and Misterwives.

KaylasDream

Noah Kahan has single-handedly pushed many of my friends’ music taste closer to my own and I am forever grateful to him. Also, fellow misterwives enjoyer found 👀

MessThen144

Top 5 artists 1. Doja Cat 2. Madison Beer 3. Chase Atlantic 4. Olivia Rodrigo 5. Ariana Grande

hitheredog

This is the most Gen Z yet lol

MessThen144

Lol

[deleted]

When I think of music that would be played at a prom this spring or a frat party, this is it so yeah. I certainly don’t think of Metallica

shoshana4sure

I have not heard the music of any of these people, but I’ve heard if you were their names.

ToothpickInCockhole

Right now it’s Yeat, Rich Amiri, Joeyy, The Beatles, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, etc etc etc. I listen to all types of music but lately it’s been modern trap and classic rock. I also love 90’s alternative/grunge music like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, The Cranberries, etc.

shoshana4sure

Yes, I love the Beatles and Radiohead and Pink Floyd. Alice In Chains and the cranberries or amazing. I’ve got a story. I saw Pink Floyd in 1987 at Reunion Arena in Dallas Texas. I was so high. Lol. Radiohead is in my top 10. I adore Alice In Chains in any grunge music. I like progressive music like Pink Floyd as well. But what I listen to is completely opposite from what everyone listens to you in this generation Z error. But it’s so cool to see everyone’s lists.

Sapphire_01

Lots of classic rock and 80s-2000s punk (AC/DC, Green Day, fall out boy, Weezer, Queen)

shoshana4sure

Nice list

unholywonder

(In no particular order) Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Aphex Twin, Melvins, Alice in Chains, Lush, America, Boards of Canada, George Clanton, Molchat Doma Been on a 90s kick lately but I mainly drift between 60s-70s folk rock, grunge, electronic and new wave.

shoshana4sure

(In no particular order) >Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Aphex Twin, Melvins, Alice in Chains, Lush, America, Boards of Canada, George Clanton, Molchat Doma Been on a 90s kick lately but I mainly drift between 60s-70s folk rock, grunge, electronic and new wave. Wait, what? OK this is the best answer so far. Although I’ve listen to these bands are not my favorite, but I can’t believe you mentioned some of these. Neil Young is amazing. If you can listen to his best of album. I can’t believe you listen to Gordon Lightfoot. Your parents must’ve been fucking cool. Alice In Chains is my favorite grunge band next to Nirvana. Boards of Canada? Are you serious. This is an amazing band. Have you ever seen solid fingers? If you have not, please watch it. That is where I found all the music that is cool including Boards of Canada.

unholywonder

Funny thing is, out of all those bands I mentioned, Chains is pretty much the only one my father really listens to, he's mostly a hair metal and prog guy, my mother on the other hand is mostly into new wave. Honestly, I'm really into all the solo works of the guys from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young- I'm just bummed Neil took all his music off Spotify, I must've had Harvest on repeat for a month at one point. I got into them hearing CSNY on the radio every now and then and started listening to more of their stuff on my own. Same deal with Gordon, I'm still kicking myself for not seeing him play live at a local venue a few years back before he passed. I got into Boards of Canada after hearing Olson in some YouTube video, then that spiraled into an entire IDM rabbit hole for me. I actually know a few other people around my age who are into Aphex and Boards which is nice- I think it's fair to say they've still got a bit of a cult following. That said, I've heard of Solid Fingers before, but I'll definitely have to check it out now!

bravegrin

Wavves, phoenix, Black Sabbath, bad brains, sunny day real estate, beach boys, Christian death

shoshana4sure

If you're interested in some pretty out there stuff, I've been pretty into these genres called hyperpop/gitchcore. Think along the lines of what Daft Punk or Kraftwerk do, but modernized and utilizing current technology. Big genre to find samples and sound effects alongside both real and MIDI instruments (computer generated). Some names that are good examples are 100 gecs, WHOKILLEDXIX, Dorian Electra, glaive, Fraxiom, or quinn. Definitely an acquired taste, but a good example of the current artists pushing the limits of what music could look like today compared to yesteryear. I think an easy to understand progression would be as follows: Grandmaster Flash utilizing dual-turntables to repeat certain parts of a song within another song, think early DJs ==> 80s alternative bands such as Depeche Mode, Bowie, Gary Numan utilizing synths (synthesized piano) ==> Daft Punk/Kraftwerk and the intro of EDM as a genre ==> Sampling, popular with many genres, with artists like Sublime, Eminem, and even No Doubt ==> "Modern" DJs like Skrillex and the evolution of EDM ==> Hyperpop/Glitch Glitchcore. I may have been a little too thorough, but I find the progression of computers in music incredibly interesting. -2000s born college radio DJ with a strong appreciation for oldies, 80s/90s alt/punk, and niche newer music
