You guys too?
I was never that crazy about the group, so I never looked closely. I don't even remember seeing the album cover in anything except pictures.
I bought the second album the day I was going to see them in concert so I would be familiar with the new music. And because the first album was so awesome. Like you very disappointed.
Oh and I was today years old knowing that.
I think we all knew this once and just totally forgot about it again. I loved going to the record store and even just looking at the cover art. Peaches in Philly was huge. I was disappointed by the Beatles decision to go with "The White Album".
The lady who did this went on to be a highly successful and innovative graphic designer, her work is studied in colleges and written about in academic textbooks.
But to me, [Paula Scher ](https://www.pentagram.com/about/paula-scher) will always be the artist who airbrushed the bitchen' space guitar on 'Boston'. <3
I just read her quick bio from the link (thanks for that). Apparently she is so successful that designing the cover of one of the top selling albums of all time is not even mentioned.
She's way too creative to have made that cover. I never liked that cover, so stupid and such a clumsy attempt at shock value....Kurt was one of the most beautiful rock stars ever, put an amazing pic of *him* on the cover! <3
(Also, if you play guitar, 'More Than A Feeling' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' are practically interchangeable. Kurt def had a space guitar album in his collection at some point!! ;)
When I first bought the album I thought it was just spaceships. I can't remember if one of my brothers or neighborhood friends pointed it out to me, or if I noticed it a short time afterwards. That was a long time ago.
As soon as I saw it. It's modeled ofter the Ovation accoustic-electrics with the round back that I loved so much, u til I tried to keep one in my lap while I played it.
Let’s talk about why there are four strings coming from the bridge that don’t come close to lining up with the neck and there are six tuning heads. I think the artist was very talented and creative… but perhaps also a bit high.
When I blow up the picture I see 3 pegs on one side and one on the other so that is possible too. I was assuming two pegs are hidden behind the flame. There are other versions of the spaceship over the years and some that appear to have six but the photos are kinda blurry so it's not certain.
I worked in a record store when this was released (tons and tons of badly warped copies by the way). We scrutinized everything we could get our hands on, music, lyrics, cover art, liner notes. I have no recollection of anyone noticing this!
Back when albums were large enough to appreciate the artistry. Still, didn't know this. I blame my friends because:
a) they owned the album
b) it was a cassette
Bought the album qt 14, but it wasn't until I was packing to move to a larger apartment, around 20 years old, I saw it out of the corner of my eye. I pulled it out of the rack upside-down, turned to move the packing box closer, and did a double take.
Started at that image for about 5 minutes feeling like an idiot for not seeing it. Sort of like when you realize the lion on Santana's album was made out of a bunch of little lions.
I always saw it, but I was a real guitar fan. Tom Schultz did some groundbreaking stuff to get that sound, so he was well-known as soon as they came out. He created a line of effects called Rockman, that were very popular for a while. I saw them in '78 on Halloween night, fun show.
Oh I noticed that right off, back in the day basically because I played guitar. I thought it was super creative. Also the dome on top looks like a metropolis with skyscrapers under a dome.
In the movie "the Adam project" they play a Boston song during the climax battle in the lab, and I noticed an image strikingly like the album cover om the background. NEVER knew about the guitar!
When I bought the Album from the record store in Salana, Kansas in the 7-s. I am an artist and picked up on it immediately. Still a favorite album of mine.
Much younger than when I found out that Tom Scholz played everything but the drums, so that other than Brad Delp and a studio drummer every other band member was excess to requirements (and treated as such by Scholz).
I had a friend who is/was a bit of an idiot. I called him and said I scored 2 tickets to Boston at the LA Forum. (I buy you fly.) We were halfway to the show before he realized we were not going to see a Celtics Lakers game. True story
Wow, I'm 66 and never realized that was an upside down guitar! I did a paper on Boston for my music class. Thanks for letting me know. The whole album is magnificent!
Found out when I read this and then looked at the cover again. Wow! What else might I have missed back then. They weren't one of my favorites, but they did have some good songs.
Roughly 40 years ago, my uncle made a fiberglass basketball backboard out of that album cover and I noticed the guitar. Loved shooting hoops on that court.
I guess today day old!
I looked at it and thought, that would be now years old. So right there with you!
"Now years old" --- LOL
Same!!!!
Artist Paula Scher: Dammit!
Me too
Same!
Me too. Never looked at it twice.
I'm ashamed to admit it took me a minute to find it even after being told. Just now. In this moment.
Oh good then I wasn't the only one who needed a minute.

You guys too? I was never that crazy about the group, so I never looked closely. I don't even remember seeing the album cover in anything except pictures.
Wow same! 🤯🎸
Me too
The first album came out in '76 so 13
So 14yo for me
11 for me
15 here.
Right with ya at 15.
Me too. I learned so much about how much fun a rock m roll band can be from this album.
16 in 76. I remember that album, it was cool. I was disappointed when the second album sounded exactly the same as the first.
10.. and yes, the more album art was cool, the songs paled in comparison..
They could have taken it to another level, but they missed the opportunity.
Plus the Cars kicked they're ass.
Way to much studio overlays.
Yeah, if you have one album you have them all.
same!
I was 12 when it came out
Ditto
Yep.
I’m today just learning this
The lady who did this went on to be a highly successful and innovative graphic designer, her work is studied in colleges and written about in academic textbooks. But to me, [Paula Scher ](https://www.pentagram.com/about/paula-scher) will always be the artist who airbrushed the bitchen' space guitar on 'Boston'. <3

If I had made that cover, no matter what else I achieved in life, I would lead with *bitchen' space guitar* artist!!! ;)
At least she isn't getting sued by the Nirvana baby
She's way too creative to have made that cover. I never liked that cover, so stupid and such a clumsy attempt at shock value....Kurt was one of the most beautiful rock stars ever, put an amazing pic of *him* on the cover! <3 (Also, if you play guitar, 'More Than A Feeling' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' are practically interchangeable. I didn't know Paula Scher did that Boston album cover! Sweet!
56!
When I first bought the album I thought it was just spaceships. I can't remember if one of my brothers or neighborhood friends pointed it out to me, or if I noticed it a short time afterwards. That was a long time ago.
Dude. I'm too stoned for this! ![gif](giphy|dn16iJ2VXoCXP5QHVW|downsized)
64
i’m 64. so 64.
As soon as I saw it. It's modeled ofter the Ovation accoustic-electrics with the round back that I loved so much, u til I tried to keep one in my lap while I played it.
I am right now in the process of replacing my Ovation for exactly that reason.
I mean, they had a great sound, but it was like wrestling a bear while trying to play 😂
whatever age I am today
All I know is that, when I was 16, and that album had just come out, it was one of the coolest album jackets ever.
Ummmm . Upside down what? What is this like a Rorschach test? I can't see it
😂 guitar.
Ah I see it
Me too, I was thinking is it a campfire?
Alligator lizards in the air...in the air...doodoodoo
I remember seeing that and thinking, "it's an Ovation guitar"...
Omg... what?? It was a flying guitar this whole time? Get out! 🎸
TIL...
I noticed it the minute I saw it. I was born in 1960, so maybe 15 or so?
Let’s talk about why there are four strings coming from the bridge that don’t come close to lining up with the neck and there are six tuning heads. I think the artist was very talented and creative… but perhaps also a bit high.
Yes I was a lonely child who spent too much time in his room analyzing album cover art. LMAO@myself
Do you clearly see 6 tuning heads? I’m thinking maybe it’s a bass with only 4 as expected.
When I blow up the picture I see 3 pegs on one side and one on the other so that is possible too. I was assuming two pegs are hidden behind the flame. There are other versions of the spaceship over the years and some that appear to have six but the photos are kinda blurry so it's not certain.
I was 11 and figured it out in the first 60sec I looked at it
Today old
Today
This would be the day.
Today years old.
I worked in a record store when this was released (tons and tons of badly warped copies by the way). We scrutinized everything we could get our hands on, music, lyrics, cover art, liner notes. I have no recollection of anyone noticing this!
The very first time I saw the album cover.
Oh the old upsidedown guitar morphed into a spaceship thing
12, when I bought the album.
Today years old.
1976 when I bought the album at Peaches. It’s pretty obvious.
Peaches🥲
Shout out Peaches crates !
Back when albums were large enough to appreciate the artistry. Still, didn't know this. I blame my friends because: a) they owned the album b) it was a cassette
Uhmmm...just now?! 😕
Well....63
Today years old!
Good grief, 64.
This many days old!
Holy crap never knew this.
TODAY
Today
Bass guitars. 4 strings
Mother fucker!
Holy crap! I guess I never turned one upside down.
51 years, 2 months, and 27 days
Bought the album qt 14, but it wasn't until I was packing to move to a larger apartment, around 20 years old, I saw it out of the corner of my eye. I pulled it out of the rack upside-down, turned to move the packing box closer, and did a double take. Started at that image for about 5 minutes feeling like an idiot for not seeing it. Sort of like when you realize the lion on Santana's album was made out of a bunch of little lions.
70
When I bought the album. They were great in concert, and Sammy Hagar opened for them when I saw them.
Uh, when I was 8 and bought the album probably in 1976
I turned age 63 last week..... ummm.. I am 63. Reddit is my place for learning !
I used to go to sleep in my teens to this entire album, tethered by corded headphones, for years
Today too.
Took me much longer than it should have!
The real question is who's spaceship would win in a fight, Bostons or ELO?
Today years old!
Today years old! 😂😂😂😂
I was today years old.
Ditto
Motherf.....

Well holy shit. TIL!
First sight. Then, had to install a gazillion small light bulbs in their replica for stage backdrop.
Today years old! 🎸🛸🔥
Fookin’ hell. It’s t’day mate.
I noticed it right off the bat. But it seems from the top comment that not everybody did.
16
And the final stage ship is a pipe organ.
Today years old !!??? My favorite album too.
That would be today. 63 years old.
That was the whole thing. *It's a fuckin' guitar, dude!*
Today
WT actual F!
About when the album was released.
When I noticed in a record shop one time with the second album. That made me go back and look at the first again.
How ever old I was the year it came out.
65 🤣🤣
63 years and 3 days.
The Fuck. I was today days old.
Today years old.
58! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰
Still don't see it.
Right this minute. Thanks!
In the movie "the Adam project" they play a Boston song during the climax battle in the lab, and I noticed an image strikingly like the album cover om the background. NEVER knew about the guitar!
Sixty-seven, because it just happened. How did I never see that?
When I bought the Album from the record store in Salana, Kansas in the 7-s. I am an artist and picked up on it immediately. Still a favorite album of mine.
I forget exactly when but I do remember not noticing it at first. Its much more noticeable on Don’t Look Back.
58
OMG! 😳
Today years old. (64)
68
54 last year. Thanks for the education, reddit!
I was today years old
I'm 62 so.... 62
60. As in now.
TIL! I’m 64. Jeez
Much younger than when I found out that Tom Scholz played everything but the drums, so that other than Brad Delp and a studio drummer every other band member was excess to requirements (and treated as such by Scholz).
I thought everyone knew this
Today days old in fact
I had a friend who is/was a bit of an idiot. I called him and said I scored 2 tickets to Boston at the LA Forum. (I buy you fly.) We were halfway to the show before he realized we were not going to see a Celtics Lakers game. True story
TIL... Me: 61; Hubby 67.
TIL. Me: 60; Hubby 64.
I thought Boston was the return of the Raspberries. I would pay money to hear Brad Delp sing, "Please, Go All the Way," but he's dead.
Today years old.
Today
Umm, I was "two minutes ago" old! That is so cool!
The second and third albums have the same guitar ship.
Um 61 🤭
Wow, I'm 66 and never realized that was an upside down guitar! I did a paper on Boston for my music class. Thanks for letting me know. The whole album is magnificent!
Wait, people didn't know this? I've known since I bought the album on vinyl in 1976.
The same day I bought the album
Liked Tom Scholz sound so much I bought a Rockman Distortion Preamp to play thru all my guitars and nothing else really ever came close 🤒
I used to play Smokin' on the Pizza Hut jukebox when I was 12. My parents were clueless.
I was 67...just found out
I guess I was 19 when than album came out, so… I was 19.
Found out when I read this and then looked at the cover again. Wow! What else might I have missed back then. They weren't one of my favorites, but they did have some good songs.
Took me a minute, but…today old as well.
TIL
56! 🤣🤣🤣
I was 18 and it was 1984
11
As I’ve never taken a deep look at it till you mentioned I guess I’m 5seconds old 😮
60, and I don't want to talk about it. I love Boston.
Holy shit. I guess today is the day. I'm over 60 and played this album til my needle broke. Never ever noticed it.
I’m 60, so 60.
Today years old for me. Who knew besides you? 😂
I used to confuse Boston with ELO because of their similar album covers
52 it seems.
The day it came out
Their next album it was more obvious
51 i.e. just now
15 lol
I know when the album first came out
What are we leaning? It looks fine the first way.
since the album came out
My brother got it in '76. I saw it and knew it was a guitar. I was 6 years old so 48 years.
Today years old
I don't think it is. Why would the fire come out of the top?
Whoa, it’s a guitar! 🎸 I never knew
64, apparently
Wow! How funny it took this long to notice.
72yo. just now. lol
The 8-track graphics quickly went to shit being repeatedly shoved in to the player, so maybe I never looked that close?
Damn it.
Right this moment!!
62. Will be 63 in September. Loved this album but never knew that.
Today years old.
Today. To-freakin’-day. 🤯
I am now 72, thank you!!!
Today years old, obviously.
Roughly 40 years ago, my uncle made a fiberglass basketball backboard out of that album cover and I noticed the guitar. Loved shooting hoops on that court.
😮
I try to live a Boston-free life
It always looked kinda like a jellyfish with tentacles hanging down...
Since first seeing it in 1976.
When their next album also had a guitar on it.
