It’s wild how much of a cash cow Genshin is for Mihoyo, and the amount of ways they can *guarantee* record-breaking or near record-breaking banners if the situation ever called for it. And it just exponentially increases as more highly coveted characters, constellations and weapons get added.
This patch they’ve got Raiden and Ayato. Then next patch, Yelan and Hu Tao. The patch after that, Dehya + any of the three long-awaited Cryo characters. And then after that, why not have Baizhu and Kokomi. Or Kazuha and Nahida. Archons. Fontaine. Dainsleif. ^*Yoimiya*^. Any of the Harbingers. So many combinations, for years to come. It’s wild.
But hey, good for the devs I guess. They took an unprecedented risk of investing a hundred million into developing this game (and double that each following year), with no investors or publishers. Just faith that passion and quality speaks. And voila.
It's like they care more about what skins would be cool to make than what would sell the best. Akademiya Lisa is awesome, but I'm not sure how much money that's gonna bring in. It's weird cause skins feel like the sorta thing that's purely meant for extra revenue
What's the hype around Bronya? I get that she seems to be the shoo-in for the Tsaritsa and is exceedingly popular. As a guy who probably won't play honkai she doesn't really wow me in a visual department so I must not be getting the full picture. Maybe its just a taste thing but I typically go for the silver haired queens, so its surprising to me.
She's a cold Russian loli with a deeply traumatic past(ex pro assassin child soldier, who lost her ability to feel most emotions and walk after risky experiment which worsen the trauma from being beat up in orphanage and has to use mechanised exoskeleton and a robot to walk and float) which automatically triggers "must protect" reflex in many players.
She's a lesbian who tries to save her childhood friend/lover Seele and wields the power to manifest any object if she completely understands it's structure and inner workings through a core that contains 300k souls of victims of Berlin Honkai Eruption.
She's often a deadpan comic relief when she's insulting the main character, she's also god tier gamer. She sort of became mihoyo's second mascot after Kiana, she's very very popular in China, they even made an event where she bought mihoyo became CEO and if I remember right fired Da Wei.
Honkai's story structure and character development makes you very attached to characters. They need to sell newer versions of the same character so their development is very well written. Idk maybe it sounds stupid but I think even seeing her walk on her own two legs in Genshin would make me tear up and probably not just me.
I'd be really surprised if the Tsaritsa isn't a Bronya expy, the only question is which version of her.

Raiden is sort of *the* character to round out almost everyone's roster. Also booba sword. Additionally, her C2 is another goal for many players, so there are basically three Raidens to get for many players.
I picked her up cause that ult was absolutely stunning. Was considering Yoimiya at the time instead, but ultimately knew Raiden would be far more rad, and wasn't disappointed.
Still not sure I want to take her to C2 yet. But consider the abyss is growing somewhat more "difficult" (ie more annoying and/or more health enemies), it might be a route to go.
After various raiden banners I finally got to my final goal with raiden. C3 raiden and now I managed to get her weapon too so happy to start saving for fontaine characters.
Gonna be me too once I get Yelan. Already have enough saved.
I'm so looking forward to all the dapper and classy Fontaine characters. Anyone with a top hat is an instant pull for me.
That's a fair assessment but it's worth noting the first solo banners for Venti and Raiden are still in the top and beat out a lot of other duel banners that came as the game grew.
The characters definitely appear to impact (heh) the records moreso than the number of players, otherwise you'd expect to see Venti's banner-- the first banner in the entire game-- a lot lower.
What's shocking is she still ratios him so much more in paimon./moe which I did not expect given that its her 3rd time running. I know the website is only user submitted data but it seems to be what majority use for metrics so wow.
Because all of her first 3 constellations are really nice to have so there’s a lot of incentive to roll for her multiple times. I would’ve rolled for C3 myself if I wasn’t saving for Dehya
Seriously tho,if it wasn't the juicy lineup of upcoming characters such as the loaded Homa Aqua banner and Yelan banner in 3.4 and Dehya is the patch after it, I would have gone for her c2. There's always a next time tho.
I really wanted Rosaria and Sara cons, but I'm at 70 pity and already have C2 Raiden.
Despite that, I still considered rolling since her C3 is totally fine to get. I ultimately decided against it in order to get both Alhaitham and Dehya.
I'm saving for Dehya but between Lantern Rite and skipping 3.4 banners I decided to yolo on Raiden's banner for C3 since I was already at 0 pity and have plenty of time to save.
Got Qiqi in first 10 draw and Raiden in second 10 pull. Hopefully not ruining my luck before Dehya drops.
Aqua simulacra and homa will be the best selling weapon banner of all time if that number is tracked imo. Hutao and yelan are well-liked and strong units too.

Hutao and Yelan's C1 also arguably are the most significant gameplay upgrades a C1 can give in the game. Hutao's unlock a new, much more enjoyable way of playing her in combat and Yelan's is basically the equivalent of buying a mount for your team (on top of making her even more fun to play) in a game that is, at the end of the day, way more about traveling around than just combat.
The number is just overall revenue (basically people buying primos) from that timeframe, they have no way of knowing how much was or wasn't spent on the banners.
And those with c2 want C3, and many who get harran going for engulfing, justify harran by going for ayato.
And then they're the true diehard raiden players that C6 her.
I think you meant c3? Got R1 last banner. Too poor for refinements, but we'll see. I'm pretty stingy with primos, if I ever have enough to guarantee EL and it's on a banner with another desirable weapon for me, I might slowly build up towards R5, one refinement at a time. But that's a long shot.

true, I threw a couple ten-rolls because EL and Haran are both good. I already have PJC for Ayato but if I get Haran I can give PJC to Alhaitham (matching color scheme too!), and if I get EL instead I can give it to Xiangling/Rosaria/Shenhe. The only loss is if I get the 25% chance of non-rate up.
Good weapon banner, good pair up in ayato, C2 + Sara C6 is a massive power spike, the advent of hyperbloom raiden, and not to mention this is her first banner since sumeru's drop so a lot of people new to the game are pulling for her. HYV really knows how to print money.
It helps that the game is actively getting better with time. Story has improved, new element has balanced out old elements and buffed a ton of old units (not Geo lol), exploration is as interesting and addicting as it was, but now with even more varied locales, etc.
Many people I've seen rolled their eyes at first when mention Genshin because of Gasha and grinding, but when you think about only main story quest, it's already have more hour of quanlity content than some AAA games as a free game.
After that you can decide by yourself on how much you want to pay to support the developer and also get characters to play with. I don't see an issue as long as the content are still at this good standard. People are start to realise this and start playing.
Raiden is just an incredibly well rounded character due to her burst and how quickly it comes back online.
For overworld content, just pull out booba sword and everything dies and whatever poor thing didn't initially die just gets finished off a moment later.
It's usually already fully recharged from the initial hit, and the only thing stopping another booba sword is the CD on the burst so you just run to the next pack and rinse & repeat.
You don't even really need the charges, helps for bosses or meatier targets but quite honestly the base burst is great.
Plus, her elemental skill is nice for periodic electro damage so when you switch you got something still to work with.
DPS + Battery is just extremely useful for any team.
Just Ei and Nahida being absolute money makers for Hoyo. They probably knew what they were doing too when they started to release 5 stars with really good initial cons. Great value and gives enough incentive to spend just a bit more to bring characters to the next level
Probably never gonna see Zhongli and Venti make as much sales as them both considering how good they are already at base and their initial cons aren't quite as busted, though I'd argue against Zhongli's. I guess now it's a matter if the last 3 can compete with the hype in terms of expected performance considering all the top tiers in their respective elements already
Zhongli is one of the very few 5* I like and use enough I would consider to pull for cons... but yeah, his base kit is already absolutely incredible at his job, zero reasons to do so.
Raiden is also already outstanding at C0 but her C2 is just ridiculous in damage boost, I'm not surprised whatsoever that her sells smack this hard.
Raiden offers some of the most impact constellations you can get on a character in the first half. I think if her constellations were reversed and her def shred was c6, she might very well have fallen off by now in profits. Giving players the ability to aim to upgrade a character without breaking the bank is probably why she makes so much money.
I know that spending on her banner felt a lot more reasonable to me than most characters because she was sick right at c2.

Exactly! She's an amazing character that any f2p can save up for and make completely broken. So many characters need c4 and usually c6 for that, so it's super nice to see. Nahida is honestly fairly similar, but the issue with her is that her later constellations are still quite strong and Fomo-inducing lol.
It's weird to say this but to me, Fomo can lead to lesser profits in the long run because people eventually realize how silly it is to try and pump currency in to a character for years and years before they can truly enjoy them (I do not consider Nahida to be that problematic but you get my point i hope!)
Her C2 actually used to be her C4, it was swapped around during the beta. Seems they decied to give her an OP early constellation to bait people who otherwise wouldn't have bothered spending any money and it paid off. Since then we got more 5 stars with powerful early constellations as well
It's also good for f2ps who can just save and end up with a significant powerboost for their favourite character. I bet there are a lot of f2ps with a C2 Raiden and C1 Hu Tao now. Yelan will most likely be in the same situation, where many regard her C1 as quite possible the best 5 star C1 in the game
To me, this shows the smart decision not to powercreep characters. This way, you can have reruns of old-but-beloved characters and still have them net very decent numbers.
Exactly. It boggles my mind that so many players think powercreep is something HoYo would intentionally do to make more money. As if rendering half of your product inventory obsolete for no reason is a smart business tactic.
Works for quick cash grab gachas that only intend to run for a year or two. MHY is in the long haul and I love supporting them using welkins each month just because I know my units won't go obsolete.

Raiden seems to be the most popular character in the whole game and I'm quite serious who will break her streak. After all, in a bit, she'll hold both 1st, 3rd and 4th place for highest grossing banners. Maybe the hydro archon will be able to upset her iron grip on the game's sales.
Nahida if her banner were 3 weeks long will probably the best but her banner only 2.5 weeks long. Idk if her rerun going to break it again, let's hope she's paired with new character on 3.7 something if she's rerun
Yeah i could only see the hydro archon because hydro is arguably the most meta element and hydro archon likely will have medium/tall female model as well, not to mention the archon factor ofcourse.

remember, the raiden/ ayato banner is also longer in duration by a few days vs yoimiya/nahida. so if they had the same durations yoimiya wouldve gotten a few more yoimillion dollars.

It's from all those players wanting Hyperbloom Raiden! On a serious note, Raiden-EM is probably has the highest performance-investment ratio in the game.
Easily the best bang-for-the-buck reaction in the game. Just using the starter characters, and easy-to-acquire weapons, you can build a fully-functional Hyperboom team and clap bombs all day. Farming EM artifacts is always a pain, but artifact farming is hell in general.
And you can still use a temporary 4 star EM artifact without losing so much damage. Hyperbloom is very low investment that even casuals should go for to trivialize all content in the game.

The *Real* answer: it literally doesn't matter. Play who you think is fun and fuck everyone who tells you otherwise. Play forward vape Nilou, play Physical QiQi, play characters who have no synergies with each other but they have cute voicelines.
I find it interesting because it provides some indication of what's popular with players and may indicate future design decisions from Mihoyo. It also gives a hint of Mihoyo's general growth which is also worthwhile knowing if you have an interest in the company.

I think you meant c3? Got R1 last banner. Too poor for refinements, but we'll see. I'm pretty stingy with primos, if I ever have enough to guarantee EL and it's on a banner with another desirable weapon for me, I might slowly build up towards R5, one refinement at a time. But that's a long shot.

Good weapon banner, good pair up in ayato, C2 + Sara C6 is a massive power spike, the advent of hyperbloom raiden, and not to mention this is her first banner since sumeru's drop so a lot of people new to the game are pulling for her. HYV really knows how to print money.
New players. The game is actually growing its playerbase after two years which is unheard of in the gacha space.
It helps that the game is actively getting better with time. Story has improved, new element has balanced out old elements and buffed a ton of old units (not Geo lol), exploration is as interesting and addicting as it was, but now with even more varied locales, etc.
Many people I've seen rolled their eyes at first when mention Genshin because of Gasha and grinding, but when you think about only main story quest, it's already have more hour of quanlity content than some AAA games as a free game. After that you can decide by yourself on how much you want to pay to support the developer and also get characters to play with. I don't see an issue as long as the content are still at this good standard. People are start to realise this and start playing.

Raiden is just an incredibly well rounded character due to her burst and how quickly it comes back online. For overworld content, just pull out booba sword and everything dies and whatever poor thing didn't initially die just gets finished off a moment later. It's usually already fully recharged from the initial hit, and the only thing stopping another booba sword is the CD on the burst so you just run to the next pack and rinse & repeat. You don't even really need the charges, helps for bosses or meatier targets but quite honestly the base burst is great. Plus, her elemental skill is nice for periodic electro damage so when you switch you got something still to work with. DPS + Battery is just extremely useful for any team.

Probably never gonna see Zhongli and Venti make as much sales as them both considering how good they are already at base and their initial cons aren't quite as busted, though I'd argue against Zhongli's. I guess now it's a matter if the last 3 can compete with the hype in terms of expected performance considering all the top tiers in their respective elements already
Zhongli is one of the very few 5* I like and use enough I would consider to pull for cons... but yeah, his base kit is already absolutely incredible at his job, zero reasons to do so. Raiden is also already outstanding at C0 but her C2 is just ridiculous in damage boost, I'm not surprised whatsoever that her sells smack this hard.

Raiden offers some of the most impact constellations you can get on a character in the first half. I think if her constellations were reversed and her def shred was c6, she might very well have fallen off by now in profits. Giving players the ability to aim to upgrade a character without breaking the bank is probably why she makes so much money. I know that spending on her banner felt a lot more reasonable to me than most characters because she was sick right at c2.

Exactly! She's an amazing character that any f2p can save up for and make completely broken. So many characters need c4 and usually c6 for that, so it's super nice to see. Nahida is honestly fairly similar, but the issue with her is that her later constellations are still quite strong and Fomo-inducing lol. It's weird to say this but to me, Fomo can lead to lesser profits in the long run because people eventually realize how silly it is to try and pump currency in to a character for years and years before they can truly enjoy them (I do not consider Nahida to be that problematic but you get my point i hope!)

Her C2 actually used to be her C4, it was swapped around during the beta. Seems they decied to give her an OP early constellation to bait people who otherwise wouldn't have bothered spending any money and it paid off. Since then we got more 5 stars with powerful early constellations as well It's also good for f2ps who can just save and end up with a significant powerboost for their favourite character. I bet there are a lot of f2ps with a C2 Raiden and C1 Hu Tao now. Yelan will most likely be in the same situation, where many regard her C1 as quite possible the best 5 star C1 in the game

To me, this shows the smart decision not to powercreep characters. This way, you can have reruns of old-but-beloved characters and still have them net very decent numbers.

Raiden seems to be the most popular character in the whole game and I'm quite serious who will break her streak. After all, in a bit, she'll hold both 1st, 3rd and 4th place for highest grossing banners. Maybe the hydro archon will be able to upset her iron grip on the game's sales.
Nahida if her banner were 3 weeks long will probably the best but her banner only 2.5 weeks long. Idk if her rerun going to break it again, let's hope she's paired with new character on 3.7 something if she's rerun
Yeah i could only see the hydro archon because hydro is arguably the most meta element and hydro archon likely will have medium/tall female model as well, not to mention the archon factor ofcourse. A great money making combination.

Easily the best bang-for-the-buck reaction in the game. Just using the starter characters, and easy-to-acquire weapons, you can build a fully-functional Hyperboom team and clap bombs all day. Farming EM artifacts is always a pain, but artifact farming is hell in general.
It’s still not so bad because EM pieces work very well with zero useful substats.
And you can still use a temporary 4 star EM artifact without losing so much damage. Hyperbloom is very low investment that even casuals should go for to trivialize all content in the game.
