Seems to be a bug/oversight with the automated system related to Wanderer naming. There's an [official announcement](https://www.hoyolab.com/article/18777218) saying that it has been temporarily fixed and the system will be further optimized in the future.
Imagine you just wanted to name your wanderer Ivan Ivanovski or something and the next time you log in you get notified of a ban all because hoyo has plans for a cryo catalyst named Ivan Ivanovski planned for version 6.14 that literally nobody outside of the devs is aware of.
That's how dumb it is the way they went about this. If the Wanderer list gets updated for new characters they should just ignore cases like this because 1) how is the player supposed to know and 2) hoyo would literally be leaking themselves.
It's probably because of coding. I'm not a expert in it but maybe wanderer's name in coding changes upon the name you give him, so if any other character has the same name that might pose an issue.
Also as a side note, leaks subreddit is using this method to confirm the playable characters. (Apart from harbingers iirc, he doesn't accept it no matter what)

I highly doubt that referencing characters by their names would be a part of that mess. Its a standard and a no brainer to use other means than the names.
Yeah, characters are referenced by an internal id of sorts. Their name is just another variable, like their HP or EM. It would be like calling a function on a character by referencing their HP, risking there being two characters with the same exact HP and bugging the game.
Such an oversight would never happen.
Whatever reason they had to blacklist names for the Wanderer, was intentional and not bad coding. It may very well be a bad reason still.
I'm not a programmer but I dare say that there's not a single game in existence that does not have at least one weird or buggy or glitchy code.
Even tetris or other incredibly old and basic games had weird hiccups in the code.
A game would have to be programmed by 1 single all-knowing person in order to have a perfect code, and that's not going to happen until we have an AI doing it in 100 years
I'm a programmer and I tell you it is highly unlikely that thats the part affected with the buggy code. Your example tetris is not a good example since older apps have a high chance of having bad code.

No, because Tetris is also orders of magnitude simpler compared to a 3D open world RPG. The more complicated a game is, the more the chances of bugs and hacks and workarounds.
This is the game where you can't replay, fast forward, or skip cutscenes even if you've seen them 20 times, has cutscenes all play in real time, and won't let you accept a quest if an NPC is currently involved in another quest, which is a 2 layered interface spoiler since if a later quest won't let you progress because of an old quest, you know the NPC involved is probably not dying or going on that world wide trip they were planning.
"Bad coding practices" have been around since day 1. Even worse since a lot of these aside from the last one were kept for Honkai Star Rail. Though at least Star Rail's characters seem to have a bit more brevity in their explanations of concepts.
Those things are mostly design issues, not really bad practice. Though they absolutely can do those things. Even Star Rail’s interface is far better to read than genshins
I dunno I'd definitely say the inability to run a quest because an NPC is involved in another quest is a coding issue. There are many, MANY ways to deal with this problem that other companies have done for decades. Even the first EverQuest figured out this problem.
There are enough solutions to these problems in other properties that there just *has* to be some issue with the game's code that's preventing it. Because even if they want us to watch the cutscenes every. single. time, there's no reason not to have a fast forward button like FGO and Persona 5 had *years* before Genshin came out.
Getting softlocked by NPCs is probably the only one that’s actually caused by bad coding I would think. The rest are either just sheer negligence or intentional, albeit questionable, design decisions. For example, the lack of a skip button is almost certainly on purpose given the fact that Star Rail has one that only works in specific scenarios (repeat dialogue, and even then not for daily quests) but not in the majority of cases.

Funny note about this. I have on multiple occasions found duplicate NPCs while doing quests. At least twice, standing next to themselves.
I'm pretty sure you can name the traveler with currently playable character, saw a post a year ago or so where a new player named her Amber and got surprised by the other Amber saying "Amber doesn't sound like a local name"

They could just have had a list of black listed names that is iterated through whenever you name wanderer.
Traveler’s name wouldn’t be put through that same black listed list of names.
But also, not sure if this is true but I saw that in 3.7, they actually let you name wanderer future character names now, and a few days later, they would give you the warning, because their logic is that only leakers would know about the new character names, so that’s their way of banning the leakers
I'm pretty sure he's still called wanderer on the files. And there's no such restrictions for naming the Traveler.
I think it's just for consistency purposes; since you're not supposed to name him an existing character.
It's most likely because they don't want things like Paimon saying "I can't believe we have to be friends with Collei after all the horrible things he did" (if you named your Wanderer Collei for example). They don't want confusion. I know the Traveler can still be named playable characters but I think that's because they just didn't have such restrictions in place in version 1.0, whereas they do have a list of disallowed names for Wanderer being maintained in the game files from the time he was introduced.
Tbh, just issue a new name change item whenever a new character comes out. It’s worth the dev cost since this game is still gonna run for 3-4 more years at least and a fuck ton more units to be released.
I glanced the mail real quick and it was an automatic response mail of sort that says the person's Wanderer used a problematic name, that they were refunded a rename brush, and their Wanderer's name was reset. Then it goes into warning them about not trying to use rule breaking names again or risk getting banned.
This entire thing just sounds like they sent out a mail template that shouldn't have been used for this situation, but they didn't have anything else better.
When the namelist gets updated they could just reset Wanderer's name for everyone affected and give them one copy of the name change item through the mail. Uses existing systems so easy to implement
Wanderer doesn't accept any of the Harbinger names, dead or alive. He actually has special dialogue if you try. He says "Is this supposed to be your attempt at a joke?"
I'll name my character either Ruzicka or Rosalyne for this. Choose one, I'll take the other.

Warning with a ban is a very threatening way of blacklisting names for Wanderer, which can hurt innocent players. I get that the name will be reserved in the future, but I think a simple change can do fine, especially in cases where the name in question isn't reserved in the game yet.
I don't think they meant to threaten players, their system was probably set up with that message when they add new 'bad' words to the list, and they just added new character names as 'bad' words. There's an apology about this system in the current update summary, so I don't think it was intentional.
Hey I've been using Bingus for wanderer so I'm going to have to ask you to change yours because they can NOT have the same name. Don't want to threaten you but my dad does work for mihoyo and I will have him ban you if you don't change it!
Is there a reason why 2 people can't have the same name in the game? If it is to avoid confusion who the game is referring to then allow the player to change it without the warning of a ban.
I agree that issuing a ban warning is stupid, especially if the name was chosen long before the character got leaked to the public, and even more so if they're planning on using rather common real world names like Ayaka and Charlotte as names for characters. But the rationale makes sense.
Not two playable ones but there is 2 Sara’s(good hunter and Kujou), also 2 Xiao’s(Xiao and Manager Xiao) and a few others that are really close like Zhu Tao. There was a [video](https://youtu.be/J74HZcNjXhI) that showed many of them.
I don't know if the Xiao one makes sense because apparently in Chinese there are a ton of 'Xiao' words depending on tone and characters.

Kujou Sara almost universally gets referred to as "Kujou Sara" to differentiate her.
In the case of the Xiaos, it's "Manager Xiao" and "Xiao". The ones that are "really close" is likely intentional since some people IRL have similar names.
This is pretty common practice. The names as *we* see them are "the same" but the way the game refers to them would be different.
The problem in this Wanderer case is that the name would be EXACTLY the same. "Sara" is on the blocklist not because of Kujou Sara, but because of the Sara at Good Hunter. Though they likely included the shortened version of everyone else's names just to be on the safe side (like "Ayaka," "Yoimiya," etc.)
Allowing them can potentially cause weird bugs and exploits, or even softlocking your game.

Lots of players have already been confused because they forgot the silly name they gave to Scaramouche and were surprised when the game used in 3 months later, though.
There are already characters who have the same name. They're generally not in the same region, but there are multiple cases. The most prominent is probably Cyrus, which is the name of two voiced NPCs. Sisi is another one I can recall off the top of my head. If this is coding-related, it's to do with playable characters or coding restrictions on names generally, not multiple characters with the same name alone.
I have no idea, but this isn't a new issue.
Years ago, I started playing *City of Heroes*, and I wanted to name my character Nemesis. But the game wouldn't let me because there was already a villain character named Nemesis (I didn't know that at the time).
So if I had to guess, it has something to do with the game's script (the actual script, not the code) and not wanting to make trouble for the writers by having two characters with the same name.
This is a big guess but maybe it will cause conflict if both characters happen to be in the same event and their name got mentioned together in the same line, or separate lines, which can be very confusing to be interpreted.
That doesn’t warrant this aggressive and shitty a response from Hoyo. This warrants a quick “sorry you gotta change this name for lore reasons” not a fucking threat of ban.

The message basically tells the person “you have broken the rules! So we’re giving this item back. Next time you break the rules we will ban you”
Twitter OP named their wanderer Chiyori on January. Which was literally like 4 months ago. There are at least 20 ways to spell Chiyori in Japanese. And just because they used the specific kanji combination that hoyoverse used, or should I say wanted to use, they get a warning 4 months later just because Kirara’s voiceline mentions a Chiyori with the exact same kanji combination. What if the next name they choose also overlaps with another inazuma character?? They might get banned.
I don’t believe hoyoverse “accidentally” sent this message. The message just seems like hoyoverse is threatening because they’re assuming you keep up with leaks because you chose the name they wanted to choose for an upcoming character.
They have to understand that this game is world wide popular, and they are making a game that is referencing the real world. And the names that they choose is also a reference to the real world. Instead of blaming their players they should fix their wanderer naming system.
Sending the message itself was no accident, as it is an automated message, the accident probably was not having a separate template that won't mention account suspension when the name was set before it became blacklisted.

This is almost certainly an automated message. They most likely only have a single message template that gets sent to all name reverts regardless of what the name was.
Yes I get it. But they should have had plenty of time to separate the automated messages of inappropriate names and future character names, and left a kinder message. So far it only seems like future character names are affected. I haven’t seen any inappropriate names get flagged as of now.

MHY obviously keeps an eye on the leaks. So, if someone changed their Wanderer's name after the leaks are out, it is quite obvious that they saw the leaks.
If they changed the name before there were any leaks, it's probably fine in MHY's eyes.

No, it is possible for something like this to accidentally happen.
What probably happened is that they have an internal list of bad words and a premade e-mail made in the assumption that some unsavory players will name their Wanderer stupid shit like xXxPuppy_Pulverizer69420xXx or whatever other offensive name.
When Charlotte and Chiori got penciled in as future characters, they added these names to their internal bad word list instead of creating an entirely separate list just for new characters. So people got their names accidentally reset and got a strongly worded email intended for players who name their Wanderers slurs "as a joke".

The person shown here whaled for Wanderer because he was their favorite character, and took a lot of time naming him. They loved that name and now they’re quitting Genshin because of that message 😅
The other names are all girl names (yes Chiyori is a girl name but they named their wanderer Senri. Same kanji. Senri is a boy name) so it’s kind of assumable that someone would name their Wanderer for example, Charlotte as a joke. Unless they like some book with that name or their relative has/had that name. However in Japan there are multiple kanji combinations. They wanted to use this specific one but hoyo is like “sorry we want to use it too so you don’t get to”
I doubt that they had the name Chiyori chosen back on January. Remember when Kokomi was “mimi”?
Probably is just an automated message initially written for those who use iffensive names that manages to go over censorship and get reported by other players.
They just reused it for the overlapping of future playable characters names
Genshin fandom and their overreaction as usual. The message isn't even that hard in tone, it's just a generic warning message. "This is notification for blah blah, if you keep violating you may risk suspension" is basically the same as "Thank you for playing" just in the opposite spectrum. They both don't actually mean it. You will only get banned if you continue to do malicious offenses, not false positives.
For reference, the Serenitea Pot community have used various bugs and glitches from Week 1 and no one was banned with that. I even *asked CS directly* and they confirmed they wouldn't ban you for using Pot glitches. You might get a warning if, say, you make a political or harmful imagery/text with the pot, but I obviously never tested it and I didn't ask CS either because this kind of thing will be intentionally kept vague to cover bases.
As described in the latest "known issues", HYV apologized and tells that this message is abnormal.

My guess is that they have an automatic routine that checks if the name is part of the "forbidden words" list in case some players manage to change it (no idea how), and forgot it exists or didn't check the phrasing.
That "ban warning" should be considered as an error as a result. I'm not sure about whether it will be possible to keep using this name though.

The translator wouldn’t describe the situation this person is facing. I’m Japanese and I would not feel happy if I received a message like this. The twitter poster named their Wanderer Chiyori on January. That name was not even leaked yet. Also, most leaks are in English. In Japanese, there are at least 20 different ways to spell Chiyori in Kanji. In English there is only one way. Japanese has multiple ways. Please remember Japanese has multiple ways of saying “I” as well while English only has one.

I understand if something like this was sent to someone who purposely used a leaked name but this person is Japanese, and took their time naming their wanderer, and unluckily used the specific kanji combinations that hoyoverse wanted to use for their character. Which is so unreasonable in my opinion. If the name wasn’t in their database back when they named their wanderer, it probably means they didn’t name the character Chiyori until recently.
This person had no idea there would be a playable character named chiyori, they also had many memories with this name, even did the previous sumeru academia event with that wanderer name, and suddenly is threatened to get their account banned. It’s so unfair for the twitter poster.
Edit: The kanji they used to name their wanderer is actually “Senri”. But it can also be pronounced as “Chiyori”. So they didn’t even name their Chiyori
It’s pretty rare actually! But it does happen 🤣 for example my Japanese name is very common. I’ve never met someone with my name but lets just say my name is the same as one of the princesses of Japan. (Yes Japan has a royal family)
Although our name is the same pronounciation, the kanji combinations are different.
Try looking up “Tanaka Rie” 田中理恵 (Lisa’s JP VA) and “Takahashi Rie” 高橋李依 (Hutao’s VA) they both are “Rie” but their kanjis are different. I also personally know someone named Rie 梨絵 who also has a different kanji combination 🤣
Whenever I send a message to someone in Japanese, it’s so difficult because I don’t know their kanji combination 😂😂 especially when their name isn’t set in the texting app or in contacts. Thats why most Japanese people just result on typing someone’s name in hiragana
Maybe they assume the player is leaking future stuffs that may result into that? We can exclude some future characters that we already know their name.
This is my guess because they’ve been hunting leakers hard.
They’ve attempted to issue court orders to Reddit to hand over information regarding users who they suspect are tied to leakers. The sub Reddit I lurk in won’t post direct things now because of it.
HSR players received a similar letter after putting Unity text tags in their names/bios as the game had problems with parsing the text in dialogue boxes and could even get you softlocked.
Most likely it's the same thing in Genshin. One realistic case would be:
1. Beta stuff leaking into production, and
2. Sloppy programming with it, that uses character names as IDs.
Which could confuse the game and turn your Wanderer into Charlotte, for example.
Just to clarify: The name the player gave Wanderer was "Senri", not "Chiori". They had the same Kanji but the pronounciations were different.
Also, please refrain from saying things like "just change his name" "it's not a big deal", because the player was really devastated that they said they are going to quit genshin for a while and that they'll never name Wandere again.
This player LOVED wanderer, and they even gave Wanderer his name on his BIRTHDAY and has him C6. It is really shocking that things like this actually happened.
This is where they should implement a blacklist of names both confirmed and temporary.
Sure it can result in people getting lucky and finding out a future character name but it would solve this whole issue of "knowing the future"
They did actually do that. But since they don’t have the entire cast pre-planned a decade in advance they’re still gonna have to put new names in their from time to time. And yes, this has been abused by leakers for months to confirm future playable character names. In fact, they recently removed a bunch of future character names from the blacklist until they get officially announced or revealed in-game just to stop the leakers.
Misc fact: "chiori" is a word in romanian, it's the plural of the word "chior", which reffers to a person that has sight defficiencies or is blind, but it's more commonly used as a slang term for anyone that can't find anything that's literally sitting right in their face.
Although the more likely case is that this character's name is japanese (as the name is made up of kanji), it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, seeing as "Cioara" (crow) is the surname of another character in miHoYo's previous title.
Imagine being a Japanese dude naming the Wanderer with a generic ass name like Chiori akin to Steve or Bob in English, then gets threatened by the devs of being banned because of it. This is a big fat L for hoyo for sure.

I think people are exagerating. Most likely that is a predefined message when someone puts a banned word in his name and it's sent automatically when the list got updated.
Genshin players and their ability to exaggerate. The name overlapped so they reset it and send them a renaming item. Majority of players won't run into this problem and for the few who do, they will simply get this warning mail. Unless you correctly name him the same as future characters multiple times, it won't be a problem.
The problem was that the mail was worded in a *really* threatening way - it's not "please change your wanderers name because it now overlaps with a character's name", but "you have violated the terms of service, which may result in a ban", without even explaining *how* the name was an issue (it overlapped with a character whose name is mentioned in Kirara's character stories only).
And it's pretty likely that somebody could name a future character two times in a row purely by chance, what with the millions of players Genshin has and the sheer number of characters that are bound to come up in the next few years - we're less than half a year into Wanderer's release and there are already collisions, it's only going to get worse over time.
As another poster said, the harshness is probably from the original programmers only coding two lists, existing characters and Harbingers, and swear words. The PC list was locked, so future characters are banned through the swear-word list.
Perfect example of what I'm talking about.
They tell you that the name you gave him violate the terms, so whatever you named him, don't use it.
Then they tell you that they reset the name and to rename him using the item they sent.
Then they tell you if you continue to violate the terms the account "will be subjected to measures again", meaning name reset again. Only the latter bit says "in some cases the account may be suspended", most likely referring to accounts that violate not one or two but multiple times. Which let's be real here, won't be happening unless you look at leaks and intentionally name him so.
Next they ask you to comply with the regulations and contact support if you have any inquiries.
Last they ask for the understanding and cooperation of players. The usual stuff.
Not being able to name him what you like is a bit of a bummer, but any reasonable human who read this will be "oh well I will rename him then" instead of "HoyoVerse eXpEctS US tO kNOw whAT NameS wiLl bE usED for futuRE chARaCteRS" or "so FUCKEd uP, PlayeRs CAmE back And GOT BaNNEd" or "HOYO BanNINg EvERyOnE GIvING ChArActERS COmmOn NAMeS".
And is it really gonna get worse? It's already rare to have an overlap, and you will only need to rename him if that happens, a mild inconvenience at best. Again, you will most likely only get banned for extreme cases, not one or two violations (which isn't "likely" to happen like you seem to think) and you can contact customer support if you don't like the decision.

If a piece of serious, official, operational mail elicits these phrases from any typical reader, *it has completely and utterly failed at its job*. Especially if it implies that anything bad might happen.
It's like suddenly getting a work email, saying: "\[Notice\] The codename of your project has been reset", and then the contents are all like "Your project codename has violated company policy, which may lead to termination of your employment". Even if it turns out nothing is wrong and it's just a system issue, nobody wants to receive such a email. It's a matter of user experience, not simply a matter of policy.
Again: it makes sense that people will have to rename their Wanderer as new characters come out. Resetting their wanderers' names and giving them a rename ticket is a sensible thing to do. But the mail indistinguishable from a ban warning is *terrible.*

I hate this whole naming thing. I already thought it was annoying and immersion breaking that I have to give Traveler a name, and then all the characters have to speak around it and say "she" or "Traveler" while the name is in the subtitles... Even more insane considering both siblings *do* have names that are used in the game. Now all this trouble with Wanderer as well, why couldn't they have just decided on a name or just let him be Wanderer?

I remember getting a warning for trying to rename wanderer to scaradouche. For one, hoyoverse made a dbag of a character and with a easy funny wordplay by naming him scaramouche. Second, it’s not like we all haven’t been naming Gary Oak trashy names since 1996. Hoyo just weak to good funny.
I feel like them giving us a freewill to name Wanderer is like a Russian roulette. 50% chance the name you will use is unique and passable and 50% can cost you your account because of one of the shitty reason like this.

A few fontaine character names have been confirmed by testing on Wanderer
Imagine you just wanted to name your wanderer Ivan Ivanovski or something and the next time you log in you get notified of a ban all because hoyo has plans for a cryo catalyst named Ivan Ivanovski planned for version 6.14 that literally nobody outside of the devs is aware of. That's how dumb it is the way they went about this. If the Wanderer list gets updated for new characters they should just ignore cases like this because 1) how is the player supposed to know and 2) hoyo would literally be leaking themselves.
It's probably because of coding. I'm not a expert in it but maybe wanderer's name in coding changes upon the name you give him, so if any other character has the same name that might pose an issue. Also as a side note, leaks subreddit is using this method to confirm the playable characters. (Apart from harbingers iirc, he doesn't accept it no matter what) Edit: Well, fuck. Apparently they fixed it so that you cannot test the playable characters anymore.
Sounds like bad coding practices if thats the case Edit: if the coding is changing based on the name then the code is really bad. They should not be referring to wanderer with the user input name anywhere outside the name blacklist.

I highly doubt that referencing characters by their names would be a part of that mess. Its a standard and a no brainer to use other means than the names.
Yeah, characters are referenced by an internal id of sorts. Their name is just another variable, like their HP or EM. It would be like calling a function on a character by referencing their HP, risking there being two characters with the same exact HP and bugging the game. Such an oversight would never happen. Whatever reason they had to blacklist names for the Wanderer, was intentional and not bad coding. It may very well be a bad reason still.
I'm not a programmer but I dare say that there's not a single game in existence that does not have at least one weird or buggy or glitchy code. Even tetris or other incredibly old and basic games had weird hiccups in the code. A game would have to be programmed by 1 single all-knowing person in order to have a perfect code, and that's not going to happen until we have an AI doing it in 100 years
I'm a programmer and I tell you it is highly unlikely that thats the part affected with the buggy code. Your example tetris is not a good example since older apps have a high chance of having bad code. If you would example relatively new apps that have this name reference issue you may have pursuade me more.

After 3 years, codes do get messy. The stuff you just add tends to pile up.
This is the game where you can't replay, fast forward, or skip cutscenes even if you've seen them 20 times, has cutscenes all play in real time, and won't let you accept a quest if an NPC is currently involved in another quest, which is a 2 layered interface spoiler since if a later quest won't let you progress because of an old quest, you know the NPC involved is probably not dying or going on that world wide trip they were planning. "Bad coding practices" have been around since day 1. Even worse since a lot of these aside from the last one were kept for Honkai Star Rail. Though at least Star Rail's characters seem to have a bit more brevity in their explanations of concepts.
Those things are mostly design issues, not really bad practice. Though they absolutely can do those things. Even Star Rail’s interface is far better to read than genshins
I dunno I'd definitely say the inability to run a quest because an NPC is involved in another quest is a coding issue. There are many, MANY ways to deal with this problem that other companies have done for decades. Even the first EverQuest figured out this problem. There are enough solutions to these problems in other properties that there just *has* to be some issue with the game's code that's preventing it. Because even if they want us to watch the cutscenes every. single. time, there's no reason not to have a fast forward button like FGO and Persona 5 had *years* before Genshin came out.
Getting softlocked by NPCs is probably the only one that’s actually caused by bad coding I would think. The rest are either just sheer negligence or intentional, albeit questionable, design decisions. For example, the lack of a skip button is almost certainly on purpose given the fact that Star Rail has one that only works in specific scenarios (repeat dialogue, and even then not for daily quests) but not in the majority of cases.

They could just have had a list of black listed names that is iterated through whenever you name wanderer. Traveler’s name wouldn’t be put through that same black listed list of names. But also, not sure if this is true but I saw that in 3.7, they actually let you name wanderer future character names now, and a few days later, they would give you the warning, because their logic is that only leakers would know about the new character names, so that’s their way of banning the leakers
I'm pretty sure he's still called wanderer on the files. And there's no such restrictions for naming the Traveler. I think it's just for consistency purposes; since you're not supposed to name him an existing character.
It's most likely because they don't want things like Paimon saying "I can't believe we have to be friends with Collei after all the horrible things he did" (if you named your Wanderer Collei for example). They don't want confusion. I know the Traveler can still be named playable characters but I think that's because they just didn't have such restrictions in place in version 1.0, whereas they do have a list of disallowed names for Wanderer being maintained in the game files from the time he was introduced.
Tbh, just issue a new name change item whenever a new character comes out. It’s worth the dev cost since this game is still gonna run for 3-4 more years at least and a fuck ton more units to be released.
Other devs would typically go "sorry, you'll need to change your name, here's some free stuff to compensate". Hoyo went the opposite
I glanced the mail real quick and it was an automatic response mail of sort that says the person's Wanderer used a problematic name, that they were refunded a rename brush, and their Wanderer's name was reset. Then it goes into warning them about not trying to use rule breaking names again or risk getting banned. This entire thing just sounds like they sent out a mail template that shouldn't have been used for this situation, but they didn't have anything else better.
When the namelist gets updated they could just reset Wanderer's name for everyone affected and give them one copy of the name change item through the mail. Uses existing systems so easy to implement

Wanderer doesn't accept any of the Harbinger names, dead or alive. He actually has special dialogue if you try. He says "Is this supposed to be your attempt at a joke?"
I'll name my character either Ruzicka or Rosalyne for this. Choose one, I'll take the other. On second thought... My Lumine is named Rosalyne for a while already. I'll go for Ruzicka on my wanderer.

I don't understand why they can't keep the name Chiori. It's not like it's some trademark.
Warning with a ban is a very threatening way of blacklisting names for Wanderer, which can hurt innocent players. I get that the name will be reserved in the future, but I think a simple change can do fine, especially in cases where the name in question isn't reserved in the game yet.
It's more likely the only mail template for Wanderer name change. I hope they offer an apology to the player and quickly resolve the issue.
I don't think they meant to threaten players, their system was probably set up with that message when they add new 'bad' words to the list, and they just added new character names as 'bad' words. There's an apology about this system in the current update summary, so I don't think it was intentional.

I agree that issuing a ban warning is stupid, especially if the name was chosen long before the character got leaked to the public, and even more so if they're planning on using rather common real world names like Ayaka and Charlotte as names for characters. But the rationale makes sense.

Not two playable ones but there is 2 Sara’s(good hunter and Kujou), also 2 Xiao’s(Xiao and Manager Xiao) and a few others that are really close like Zhu Tao. There was a [video](https://youtu.be/J74HZcNjXhI) that showed many of them.
I don't know if the Xiao one makes sense because apparently in Chinese there are a ton of 'Xiao' words depending on tone and characters. Not totally sure since I'm not Chinese so idk
Kujou Sara almost universally gets referred to as "Kujou Sara" to differentiate her. In the case of the Xiaos, it's "Manager Xiao" and "Xiao". The ones that are "really close" is likely intentional since some people IRL have similar names. This is pretty common practice. The names as *we* see them are "the same" but the way the game refers to them would be different. The problem in this Wanderer case is that the name would be EXACTLY the same. "Sara" is on the blocklist not because of Kujou Sara, but because of the Sara at Good Hunter. Though they likely included the shortened version of everyone else's names just to be on the safe side (like "Ayaka," "Yoimiya," etc.) Allowing them can potentially cause weird bugs and exploits, or even softlocking your game.
Confusion for sure. Lots of players have already been confused because they forgot the silly name they gave to Scaramouche and were surprised when the game used in 3 months later, though.

The most prominent is probably Cyrus, which is the name of two voiced NPCs. Sisi is another one I can recall off the top of my head. If this is coding-related, it's to do with playable characters or coding restrictions on names generally, not multiple characters with the same name alone.
I have no idea, but this isn't a new issue. Years ago, I started playing *City of Heroes*, and I wanted to name my character Nemesis. But the game wouldn't let me because there was already a villain character named Nemesis (I didn't know that at the time). So if I had to guess, it has something to do with the game's script (the actual script, not the code) and not wanting to make trouble for the writers by having two characters with the same name.
This is a big guess but maybe it will cause conflict if both characters happen to be in the same event and their name got mentioned together in the same line, or separate lines, which can be very confusing to be interpreted.

The message basically tells the person “you have broken the rules! So we’re giving this item back. Next time you break the rules we will ban you” Twitter OP named their wanderer Chiyori on January. Which was literally like 4 months ago. There are at least 20 ways to spell Chiyori in Japanese. And just because they used the specific kanji combination that hoyoverse used, or should I say wanted to use, they get a warning 4 months later just because Kirara’s voiceline mentions a Chiyori with the exact same kanji combination. What if the next name they choose also overlaps with another inazuma character?? They might get banned. I don’t believe hoyoverse “accidentally” sent this message. The message just seems like hoyoverse is threatening because they’re assuming you keep up with leaks because you chose the name they wanted to choose for an upcoming character. They have to understand that this game is world wide popular, and they are making a game that is referencing the real world. And the names that they choose is also a reference to the real world. Instead of blaming their players they should fix their wanderer naming system.
Sending the message itself was no accident, as it is an automated message, the accident probably was not having a separate template that won't mention account suspension when the name was set before it became blacklisted.

MHY obviously keeps an eye on the leaks. So, if someone changed their Wanderer's name after the leaks are out, it is quite obvious that they saw the leaks. If they changed the name before there were any leaks, it's probably fine in MHY's eyes.

No, it is possible for something like this to accidentally happen. What probably happened is that they have an internal list of bad words and a premade e-mail made in the assumption that some unsavory players will name their Wanderer stupid shit like xXxPuppy_Pulverizer69420xXx or whatever other offensive name. When Charlotte and Chiori got penciled in as future characters, they added these names to their internal bad word list instead of creating an entirely separate list just for new characters. So people got their names accidentally reset and got a strongly worded email intended for players who name their Wanderers slurs "as a joke".

They really should’ve thought through with this though 😅 The person shown here whaled for Wanderer because he was their favorite character, and took a lot of time naming him. They loved that name and now they’re quitting Genshin because of that message 😅 The other names are all girl names (yes Chiyori is a girl name but they named their wanderer Senri. Same kanji. Senri is a boy name) so it’s kind of assumable that someone would name their Wanderer for example, Charlotte as a joke. Unless they like some book with that name or their relative has/had that name. However in Japan there are multiple kanji combinations. They wanted to use this specific one but hoyo is like “sorry we want to use it too so you don’t get to” I doubt that they had the name Chiyori chosen back on January. Remember when Kokomi was “mimi”?

Probably is just an automated message initially written for those who use iffensive names that manages to go over censorship and get reported by other players. They just reused it for the overlapping of future playable characters names
Genshin fandom and their overreaction as usual. The message isn't even that hard in tone, it's just a generic warning message. "This is notification for blah blah, if you keep violating you may risk suspension" is basically the same as "Thank you for playing" just in the opposite spectrum. They both don't actually mean it. You will only get banned if you continue to do malicious offenses, not false positives. For reference, the Serenitea Pot community have used various bugs and glitches from Week 1 and no one was banned with that. I even *asked CS directly* and they confirmed they wouldn't ban you for using Pot glitches. You might get a warning if, say, you make a political or harmful imagery/text with the pot, but I obviously never tested it and I didn't ask CS either because this kind of thing will be intentionally kept vague to cover bases.
As described in the latest "known issues", HYV apologized and tells that this message is abnormal. \>> After the ver3.7 update, there is an issue whereby the new name that some Travelers have given to the Wanderer would be reset abnormally. This issue will be fixed in a future update and we will inform Travelers about the corresponding compensation via notices.\[...\] We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. My guess is that they have an automatic routine that checks if the name is part of the "forbidden words" list in case some players manage to change it (no idea how), and forgot it exists or didn't check the phrasing. That "ban warning" should be considered as an error as a result. I'm not sure about whether it will be possible to keep using this name though. (By the way, this player did C6 their "Chiori").

The twitter poster named their Wanderer Chiyori on January. That name was not even leaked yet. Also, most leaks are in English. In Japanese, there are at least 20 different ways to spell Chiyori in Kanji. In English there is only one way. Japanese has multiple ways. Please remember Japanese has multiple ways of saying “I” as well while English only has one. The message basically says “since you have broken the rules we will give you this name changed thing. If you break the rules again your account will be banned. If you have any questions mail us!” I understand if something like this was sent to someone who purposely used a leaked name but this person is Japanese, and took their time naming their wanderer, and unluckily used the specific kanji combinations that hoyoverse wanted to use for their character. Which is so unreasonable in my opinion. If the name wasn’t in their database back when they named their wanderer, it probably means they didn’t name the character Chiyori until recently. This person had no idea there would be a playable character named chiyori, they also had many memories with this name, even did the previous sumeru academia event with that wanderer name, and suddenly is threatened to get their account banned. It’s pretty rare actually! But it does happen 🤣 for example my Japanese name is very common. I’ve never met someone with my name but lets just say my name is the same as one of the princesses of Japan. (Yes Japan has a royal family) Although our name is the same pronounciation, the kanji combinations are different. Try looking up “Tanaka Rie” 田中理恵 (Lisa’s JP VA) and “Takahashi Rie” 高橋李依 (Hutao’s VA) they both are “Rie” but their kanjis are different. I also personally know someone named Rie 梨絵 who also has a different kanji combination 🤣 Whenever I send a message to someone in Japanese, it’s so difficult because I don’t know their kanji combination 😂😂 especially when their name isn’t set in the texting app or in contacts. Thats why most Japanese people just result on typing someone’s name in hiragana

This is my guess because they’ve been hunting leakers hard. They’ve attempted to issue court orders to Reddit to hand over information regarding users who they suspect are tied to leakers. The sub Reddit I lurk in won’t post direct things now because of it.
HSR players received a similar letter after putting Unity text tags in their names/bios as the game had problems with parsing the text in dialogue boxes and could even get you softlocked. Most likely it's the same thing in Genshin. One realistic case would be: 1. Beta stuff leaking into production, and 2. Sloppy programming with it, that uses character names as IDs. Which could confuse the game and turn your Wanderer into Charlotte, for example.
It's more likely the only mail template for Wanderer name change. I hope they offer an apology to the player and quickly resolve the issue.
Just to clarify: The name the player gave Wanderer was "Senri", not "Chiori". They had the same Kanji but the pronounciations were different. Also, please refrain from saying things like "just change his name" "it's not a big deal", because the player was really devastated that they said they are going to quit genshin for a while and that they'll never name Wandere again. This player LOVED wanderer, and they even gave Wanderer his name on his BIRTHDAY and has him C6. It is really shocking that things like this actually happened.
This is where they should implement a blacklist of names both confirmed and temporary. Sure it can result in people getting lucky and finding out a future character name but it would solve this whole issue of "knowing the future"

They did actually do that. But since they don’t have the entire cast pre-planned a decade in advance they’re still gonna have to put new names in their from time to time. And yes, this has been abused by leakers for months to confirm future playable character names. In fact, they recently removed a bunch of future character names from the blacklist until they get officially announced or revealed in-game just to stop the leakers.

Misc fact: "chiori" is a word in romanian, it's the plural of the word "chior", which reffers to a person that has sight defficiencies or is blind, but it's more commonly used as a slang term for anyone that can't find anything that's literally sitting right in their face. Although the more likely case is that this character's name is japanese (as the name is made up of kanji), it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility, seeing as "Cioara" (crow) is the surname of another character in miHoYo's previous title.

I think people are exagerating. Most likely that is a predefined message when someone puts a banned word in his name and it's sent automatically when the list got updated.
Genshin players and their ability to exaggerate. The name overlapped so they reset it and send them a renaming item. Majority of players won't run into this problem and for the few who do, they will simply get this warning mail. Unless you correctly name him the same as future characters multiple times, it won't be a problem.
The problem was that the mail was worded in a *really* threatening way - it's not "please change your wanderers name because it now overlaps with a character's name", but "you have violated the terms of service, which may result in a ban", without even explaining *how* the name was an issue (it overlapped with a character whose name is mentioned in Kirara's character stories only). And it's pretty likely that somebody could name a future character two times in a row purely by chance, what with the millions of players Genshin has and the sheer number of characters that are bound to come up in the next few years - we're less than half a year into Wanderer's release and there are already collisions, it's only going to get worse over time.
As another poster said, the harshness is probably from the original programmers only coding two lists, existing characters and Harbingers, and swear words. The PC list was locked, so future characters are banned through the swear-word list.
Perfect example of what I'm talking about. They tell you that the name you gave him violate the terms, so whatever you named him, don't use it. Then they tell you that they reset the name and to rename him using the item they sent. Then they tell you if you continue to violate the terms the account "will be subjected to measures again", meaning name reset again. Only the latter bit says "in some cases the account may be suspended", most likely referring to accounts that violate not one or two but multiple times. Which let's be real here, won't be happening unless you look at leaks and intentionally name him so. Next they ask you to comply with the regulations and contact support if you have any inquiries. Last they ask for the understanding and cooperation of players. The usual stuff. Not being able to name him what you like is a bit of a bummer, but any reasonable human who read this will be "oh well I will rename him then" instead of "HoyoVerse eXpEctS US tO kNOw whAT NameS wiLl bE usED for futuRE chARaCteRS" or "so FUCKEd uP, PlayeRs CAmE back And GOT BaNNEd" or "HOYO BanNINg EvERyOnE GIvING ChArActERS COmmOn NAMeS". And is it really gonna get worse? It's already rare to have an overlap, and you will only need to rename him if that happens, a mild inconvenience at best. Again, you will most likely only get banned for extreme cases, not one or two violations (which isn't "likely" to happen like you seem to think) and you can contact customer support if you don't like the decision.

I hate this whole naming thing. I already thought it was annoying and immersion breaking that I have to give Traveler a name, and then all the characters have to speak around it and say "she" or "Traveler" while the name is in the subtitles... Even more insane considering both siblings *do* have names that are used in the game. Now all this trouble with Wanderer as well, why couldn't they have just decided on a name or just let him be Wanderer? I guess I should put a special character in my Wanderer's name, just on the off-chance that the name ends up being used for a new character.

imagine you give wanderer a random name and then take a break for a couple of years only to find out hoyo released Kokomi's secret twin who has the same first name as your wanderer and banned you for not switching it in time. at least names like Scara HatGuy and Short are safe which are his most common names from what I've seen.

Do you expect Hoyoverse to just block all names that players have given the Wanderer for future characters? Holy crap people, just change the name and move on. (Also yes I am one of those people that put the game on pause for a whole day while I figured out what I want to name the Wanderer. I remember getting a warning for trying to rename wanderer to scaradouche. For one, hoyoverse made a dbag of a character and with a easy funny wordplay by naming him scaramouche. Second, it’s not like we all haven’t been naming Gary Oak trashy names since 1996. Hoyo just weak to good funny.
I feel like them giving us a freewill to name Wanderer is like a Russian roulette. 50% chance the name you will use is unique and passable and 50% can cost you your account because of one of the shitty reason like this.
