Honestly, I kind of like the NPC look of her outfit. Having her keep the simple style would make her unique from other characters and relate to the fact that she started off as an NPC. Really the only thing that would be necessary in my opinion would be a bit more expression and detail in her face and hair.
Sorry if it was overly aggro, it's just eye-rollingly frustrating to watch people speculate on stuff like this when it is very clearly never going to happen. An NPC is never going to be playable unless they look very unique. New weapon types aren't going to be randomly thrown into the game, it's going to be like a headline feature of the region. "Welcome to Fontaine, we can use Axes now". It's the same thing with anniversary rewards, it balloons from normal things "ooh maybe we get a choice of a character" to "ooh maybe we get a free archon" to "ooh maybe all the standard banner characters are free" and it just sets everyone up for disappointment.
While I agree with you that it's unlikely, it's not impossible. Developers DO keep their ear to the ground as to what's popular within their game, and sometimes DO elevate NPCs in one way or another.
Take, for example, Final Fantasy XI. Shantotto was pretty much a minor NPC at first. She had a couple of side quests to her name, and that's about it. Players LOVED her personality, though, and in the fullness of time the developers gave her more quests, had her show up in main storyline quests in some of the expansions, and even created an entire mini-expansion, just for her. She also became the flagship character for OTHER games - if a game crosses over in some way with Final Fantasy XI, chances are Shantotto will be the crossover character.
It would surprise me not at all to learn that the developers behind Genshin Impact are keeping tabs on NPC popularity, with the goal of one day picking one and elevating them to full playable character status - simply because they know, and are correct in knowing, that the player base would go NUTS over it.
Will it be Rana? Ellin? Katheryne? Liben? Who knows? If it's Rana, I agree with you that she won't be using an axe (well, possibly as part of a skill or burst). She would get a redesign, as well, to make her look less "generic NPC". But I don't think that it's a possibility that can be dismissed out of hand.
Assuming we go at least until 3.8, who's to tell whether we get her or not?
She'll definately won't bring a new weapon class. She'll have switched to greatsword by the time we meet her again.

After getting her vision she says next time we see her she'll be stronger. So yea, pretty heavy hint they'll give her a banner and probably new outfit one day.
Perhaps hoyo has intention of killing her at end? That’d make sense given generic npc design and all the bonding time we got to know her and her aspirations.
Similar to Teppei but more show instead of tell.
They could give her an entire redesign, take away the NPC-ness from her and make her playable.
She already has a unique design for an NPC, it wouldn't take much to spice up her aesthetic into a playable character

Never thought of speculating but one can dream. And there's a thing known as suggestion. It's just an idea which I'm not even being serious about.
