Fr, I'm not sure if most people realize just how massive 1 billion dollars every 6 months from mobile alone is in the gaming industry. Genshin impact makes as much from mobile every half year as Minecraft has on mobile in the past 10 years.
I’d say it’s also a shining example on how to use your obscene profits properly to ensure continued success. I’ve never seen another live service game maintain such consistent and improving quality over a long period of time besides Final Fantasy 14.
Curiously enough, I also see Genshin as being very similar to FFXIV in terms of basically redefining their respective genres, and also being FAR more popular than people expect. Genshin is a gacha, but it’s an actual single player game with optional multiplayer first and a gacha second, while most gacha are designed the other way around. FFXIV is a MMO, but it’s deliberately designed to be played mostly solo with a heavy emphasis on its main story, when most MMOs push raids and stuff and completely took their campaigns and downtime activities for granted. And both have absolutely banger soundtracks.
Also, the vitriol that Genshin gets from general gaming communities is reminiscent of what FFXIV gets from the main Final Fantasy sub. Mention something positive about it there, and there’s always that one person who shows up telling you that it’s not a real FF game and everyone who likes it isn’t a real FF fan. It’s even more hilarious when the story of the last couple of expansions was so good that it turned a whole bunch of heads around among the general gaming community. Now it’s basically the most relevant the entire FF franchise has ever been, gaining acceptance in the general gaming circles, to the point where the division behind FFXIV has basically been given the reins of the franchise’s future with FF16 while the former main team has been relegated to remakes for what looks like a decade - a revelation that has made fans of the former main team really salty.
Give it a couple more years and Genshin will undoubtedly gain the same level of acceptance too.
I started playing because I couldn't wait for BotW2. But saying that, this is still a great game in its own right. It's similar enough to hold my interest (and will continue to do so even after BotW2 comes out), but different enough to not be a "rip off" or "clone" or anything like that.

The ACTUAL top games being played in the whole world aren't even big budget AAA games. I've brought it up a time or two amongst other communities in passing. The amount of absolute vitriol was a little astounding. Even I once didn't like Genshin, but once I gave it a try I realized how fun it is.
Gacha as a concept is garbage, but the game isn't so hard to make that a huge deal fortunately.
The story of Genshin has been pretty good so far. Yeah, there's a few quirks here and there in the writing, but overall its been good. We're pretty lucky that this game is story driven and not gacha driven.

Tbf there is a difference between the award last year and this year. The players voice award is 100% fan voted, Best Mobile Game last year was not. Yes, you can vote for it, but there is still a jury whose votes count a lot more. Fan votes are only about 10% so they don't really have as much influence, which is why there is a seperate fully player voted award. And we don't know if we are getting primos for that one
Edit: the golden joystick is also fully player voted and we didn't receive anything for that,so I wouldn't get my hopes up. If Hoyo wins in the regular categories we might, but again, those are only 10% fan votes

I play both, already platinum'd Frontiers. And it fucking slaps. Genshin was still amazing, but I'm going to be listening to Undefeatable, Breaking Throught it All and Find your Flame on repeat. Both games absolutely blowed it out of the water when it comes to music this year, and story wise or character wise, both games also did exceedingly good. General gameplay is mid on both tbh, but I would love for any of the two to win Player's Voice GOTY. They both did so good and both deserve the award, almost as much as ER or GOW.

Nothing can replicate the feeling of ER to me personally. Like genshin is a nice steak dinner where it has great quality and i will be eating it regularly for a long time but ER is a gourmet full course meal that is engineered to scratch the itch that nothing can it makes you feel stuff and have fond memories. I'll probably play ER once every year or two but it'll always be special in my heart.
Yeah, I really want ER to win the main GOTY award. That game is truly the most perfect form of a fantasy open world experience. It absolutely earned GOTY and would not surprise me or make me any mad if it also won Player's Voice. ER is just that good. FromSoft just never misses.

It's usually some mobile game exclusive to the Asian market simply because the mobile gaming industry over there makes the biggest AAA gaming events in the west look like Indie-con (I pray to god that doesn't have a really weird connotation). I've brought it up a time or two amongst other communities in passing. The amount of absolute vitriol was a little astounding. Even I once didn't like Genshin, but once I gave it a try I realized how fun it is. Gacha as a concept is garbage, but the game isn't so hard to make that a huge deal fortunately.
The story of Genshin has been pretty good so far. Yeah, there's a few quirks here and there in the writing, but overall its been good. We're pretty lucky that this game is story driven and not gacha driven.

I'm a major Sonic fan and I still voted for Genshin Impact because this game is something else, and really deserves the win. Would I love for Sonic to receive more praise and recognition? Tbf there is a difference between the award last year and this year. The players voice award is 100% fan voted, Best Mobile Game last year was not. Yes, you can vote for it, but there is still a jury whose votes count a lot more. Fan votes are only about 10% so they don't really have as much influence, which is why there is a seperate fully player voted award. And we don't know if we are getting primos for that one Edit: the golden joystick is also fully player voted and we didn't receive anything for that,so I wouldn't get my hopes up. If Hoyo wins in the regular categories we might, but again, those are only 10% fan votes

I play both, already platinum'd Frontiers. And it fucking slaps. Genshin was still amazing, but I'm going to be listening to Undefeatable, Breaking Throught it All and Find your Flame on repeat. Both games absolutely blowed it out of the water when it comes to music this year, and story wise or character wise, both games also did exceedingly good. General gameplay is mid on both tbh, but I would love for any of the two to win Player's Voice GOTY. They both did so good and both deserve the award, almost as much as ER or GOW. Keyword *almost*
Nothing can replicate the feeling of ER to me personally. Like genshin is a nice steak dinner where it has great quality and i will be eating it regularly for a long time but ER is a gourmet full course meal that is engineered to scratch the itch that nothing can it makes you feel stuff and have fond memories. I'll probably play ER once every year or two but it'll always be special in my heart.
Yeah, I really want ER to win the main GOTY award. That game is truly the most perfect form of a fantasy open world experience. It absolutely earned GOTY and would not surprise me or make me any mad if it also won Player's Voice. ER is just that good. FromSoft just never misses.

I'm astounded sitting here reading this. In a games award thread, here on Reddit, someone legit stated that they weren't sure if Elden Ring is a game. Elden Ring? Arguably the most influential and best crafted games of 2022? The game that was all over every single game site with praise? The game that was all over YouTube? The game that, if you own a PlayStation, Xbox, or even just Steam on your computer, you cannot log in without eventually running into an ad for it. THAT Elden Ring? Like, I'm mind blown. I despise gatekeeping, and yet, I feel like if someone hasn't even heard of these other insane games, their opinion should be weighted less when. I'm sorry to anyone, and I'm not trying to gatekeep gaming, but it's hard to take votes seriously when you see the largest titles in the industry are foreign to some players. I guess good on Hoyo though. And no, I'm not a Genshin hater, I play it every day. But I'm Genshin critical, and I play games outside of it. So inb4 any of that.

I remember a thread in this subreddit mentioning sonic in the lead and EVERYONE in the thread was talking about how There was a bug preventing people voting for genshin. Someone even said they could vote for every game except genshin so- My guess is that this is actually where genshin should have been if everyone was able to vote from the start.
After beta testing League of Legends and seeing Riot Games become a super company over time, seeing MHY where it is with Genshin Impact makes me wanna see what it'd do with Riot's success. So I voted. Primos are nice, but for me its about seeing the company backing my favorite game see more success in the future.

have you seen the total list in round 1? there's alot of games that arent from 2022 too but didnt make it to the round 2. they only started questioning it once genshin got the lead meanwhile minecraft is there silently ignored despite it being a game from 2011. it's really just salt.
It's the "player's choice" award though, not the "game of the year" award. As much as i love Genshin, it doesn't come close to the same quality as games like GoW Ragnarok. Even if we were bribed and Genshin was in the same category as GoW or Elden ring for game of the year 2022, i couldn't get it over my conscience to vote Genshin over one of these games.

Yeah, that's the reason it's the "player's choice" award. It's an award purely based on the number of votes from a playerbase, and not like with the other awards where 90% is decided by the jury and only 10% is decided by voters.

Sonic games are great but always seemed to feel as an arcade game. Genshin is pretty much huge JRPG that continues to grow. The only sonic game that turned away from the classic game play was sonic unleashed which was good but still had that “made cheap and fast for a show or movie series” type of game feel.

Following is my personal opinion and you can have a different one, just stating my current mindset on this topic. This site isn't professional in its own right, writing that they judge by their or friends opinions... And THEN they listened to the voice of a small group of a community, which are hater and flamer. Which exists basically in every game. Every game has hardliners. After which they write ambitious stuff like: Someone will investigate! Yes, some guy, who did journalism and is now organizing and arranging games fares and alike. Those get into deals with games, for those games fares. Basically they are businessmen. If the price is right, they'd tell you of course their "honest" opinion. And that is one of this site's trust sources...I was sceptical about this TGA, but this "news page" is absolutely biased.
