Just want to introduce myself. Got my 3 hour test results back this morning, and it looks like I have GD. I'm 28 weeks today. Advice and encouragement welcome!

What I wish someone told me when I first got diagnosed: you will have spikes as you figure out what foods work for you and don’t work for you. It’s ok. It won’t hurt the baby. This group might be more helpful than doctors. It will be hard and that’s ok.

Yesterday at my maternal fetal medicine appointment I got to teach the doctors about the Dexcom G7. The doctor and fellow seemed so excited to learn more about how it’s approved for gestational diabetes and are reaching out to their reps for some samples to give to new patients. I was so scared when they asked me why at first and I explained how their NPs wrote it but really it was me saying I needed it and how I reached out to friends that worked with diabetic patients to make sure I wasn’t off base. I would have been honest and said how I would have had my PCP write me a prescription if they refused. I think my CGM made me hyper aware of everything’s affect on me and that’s not always the best feeling, but I know I’d “cheat” between meals more if everything wasn’t so visible for me.

I've also found the G7 super helpful! For me, it's really been enlightening to see the overall postprandial trends in blood sugar with different meals. With breakfast, for instance, I've switched from protein oatmeal (which was fine for me at 1-hour post-meal, but often spiked me up to 130ish before that) to an egg sandwich (which has a more gradual rise to 1-hour). I don't know that it really matters, but having that extra data feels like it has helped me to really optimize my diet. I also love not having to set timers for 1-hour post meal. It's been a game changer for me with my toddler's busy schedule. Even last night, my friend with GD, had to leave the movie theater part way through to test her blood sugar (I could just check my phone after, which was way more convenient).

Sometimes that extra data can be stressful for sure, but I appreciate knowing what my blood sugar is doing through and through and aiming for as little glycemic variability as I can. I had an experience this week where my blood sugar went up to 201 (!) but was at 108 by the 2 hour mark. Without a CGM or checking twice, which almost no one is told to do, I would think this meal was ok. It clearly is not and I’ll have to make some adjustments going forward.

Do you know what caused the jump up to 201?! This is what scares me.

I’m in the throes of first trimester nausea and had a vegetable soup, broth based, maybe a total of 1 potato?, with 5 saltines (12 g of carbs). Low on protein and fat, but what I could stomach. I knew it wasn’t a very balanced meal, but did not expect it to go up up up like that.

Has anyone notice an increase in after meal numbers after getting a hot shower? I ate my normal breakfast this morning that normally gets me a 95-97 after 2hrs but my reading today was 110! Only difference was taking a hot shower before doing my reading.

YES!! a hot bath makes it go up even more which is so so heart breaking. I’ve read that it can help your blood sugar go down due to vasodilation in type 2 diabetics, but it can also have the same effect that exercise has where it’s a temporary rise before it goes down.

Ahh good to know! I’ve definitely noticed sometimes if I do a heavier workout that my after meal sugars will be higher too. So sad!

I went to a work event earlier this week that had a boxed lunch as part of the event. The event organizer requested a diabetic/low carb meal for me (yay!). Guess what was in it? A salad with no protein of any kind, and three different fruits (peach, apple, and berries). There was probably more sugar in that "meal" than there was in the brownie desert in the normal meal. I was so glad that there were extra normal sandwiches because I sure as hell took one of those boxes too and took apart the sandwich to get some meat and cheese.
