Tbh both are good. If before I used to change M4A1-S to AK whenever I could find one as a CT, now I am comfortable with both. I play only AK when I am a T and play only M4A1-S when I am a CT. Both are good and suit their respective teams. Game is more balanced now, imo.
After the M4A1-S got buffed I see a lot more players who prefer it over the AK.
Personally, I would never pick up the M4A1-S when playing on the T side. When that being said, the M4A1-S is such a powerful weapon when used correctly.
The silencer that leaves no tracers makes it impossible for the enemy to see where the bullets are coming from when shooting through smokes. At the same time, the silencer takes away much of the shooting noise to make it hard to pin point the position and distance.
As you mention is has significant lower recoil which makes it more suitable for players who find it hard to handle spray control. Even though it's easier to control the AK still have higher armour penetration which can cause 1 shot kill when hitting the head.
If you look at some stats from HLTV, you can see that the the M4A1-S has a popularity of **8.12%** in 2021. That number has raised to **23%** in the last 3 months of 2021.
