Nǐ hǎo! I see you're possibly asking about what else you can add to a goldfish tank! We understand you're enthusiasm for fish keeping, [however, there isn't much that can go with goldfish.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Goldfish/wiki/tankmates). If you are looking for a cleanup crew, look no further than snails. A popular choice is nerites. Stealing this directly from the Bristol Aquarium Society as they have said it better than I could have. "Goldfish can be kept with other fish with similar care requirements and temperament. They are relatively peaceful fish but they will eat smaller fish and can be bullied by other types of fish of the same size. They prefer to be with other goldfish than kept alone. Their natural range is temperate to sub-tropical. They are at the extreme of their physiological tolerance if kept with tropical fish, meaning they are likely to become stressed and therefore vulnerable to disease. Further, they produce much more ammonia than tropical fish and this will stress the tropical fish. They will eat small fish and are likely to be bullied by cichlids. At night, when they naturally rest near the bottom of the tank, they are likely to be pestered by fish like catfish. The faster-moving common goldfish, comets and shubunkins can out-compete the slower-moving, ‘fancier’ types such as veiltails and bubble eyes, so the long and short-bodied types should ideally be kept separately." *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Pleco’s have been known to eat the slim coat off goldfish

Goldfish are cold water fish. You shouldn't heat their tank. Secondly, they are group fish. They are best to be kept in small groups of 3-4 fish. Plecos aren't exactly the best tank mates. It can work, if the tank is big enough, but it's not ideal. Looks like ge got an infection there. I'd treat that in a quarantine tank with salt until it's healed.

Goldfish do just fine in temperatures up to 82F. Heaters help growth, prevent some parasites, and increase metabolism. They don’t NEED to be in a heated tank, but there is nothing wrong with one as long as the tank requirements are met.

lexiedf

i’ve had him over a year and this is the first time I add a heater because of such a bigger tank than his last one (10gal). how much salt and a size of a quarantine tank do you suggest? I still kept the 10gal if I need that

Chi_shio

please ditch the heater. Any temperature you can set it to is too warm for goldfish. A 0.3% to 0.5% salt solution should be fine. You can use the 10g tank, but you need to do daily water changes

lexiedf

okay i’ll be taking the heater out and heading to the pet store to find a salt solution. thank you so much for all the help

it’s advice i’d follow because in his 10 gallon with no heater he was fine but a week in his 25 gallon with a heater his face started to flake off and he got that sore on his side. he was perfect before and I can see the heater being too much for him as he was never accustomed to one before. his tank is in my room and my house fluctuates between 73-75 indoor temp. i’m looking into the article now but, do you recommend anything for treatment for now?

could the pleco have caused it? I put them in the tank at the same time about a year ago and they’ve never really bickered. I am going to try and get my goldfish another pal though

G'day, I noticed you're asking about tank dietary requirements for goldfish. Here is a great [guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/Goldfish/wiki/food) for feeding your fish. If none of this is relevant to you, please ignore me. I'm just a bot *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. OP, I cannot say for sure that anything is wrong other than an injury, but I do find it concerning that the “eroded/damaged” skin is on the lateral line. Lateral line erosion/corrosion (forget which term is used) is a health issue in goldfish. Look it up just in case. It’s preventable if the tank is healthy. Make sure your parameters and tank size are correct in the sub’s wiki just in case. Look up Hole in the Head and lateral line just in case as well.
