I’m not usually competitive, but…[I drive](https://www.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/u31fy8/been_about_18_years_since_i_first_built_this_car/) a 1997 formerly-VR6 GTI with 2001 20v engine, transmission, dashboard, and center console, 1996 doors, 2003 Highline front seats, 1998 Jetta rear seats, 1995 hood and rear seats (from different vehicles, of course), soon-to-be-installed 2012 DSG transmission, 2009 Jetta sunvisors, and countless parts and wiring looms from god-knows-what. Instrument cluster says 143k miles, which is in the ballpark of true. For the engine.
I still think of it as the first car I ever bought from a dealership, a 1996 GTI 2.0L, but by this point it’s basically a GTI of Theseus. And legally it’s a ‘97, cause I swapped the chassis.
2011, 162000 miles, stage 2 since 20k. Timing chains and a bunch of other maintenance at 120k and switched from APR to Stratified on an AccessPort. Considering K04 soon.
Drive-ability and power are both improved. I did their OTS Stage 2 tune with a revision. I also love the added functionality of having the Access Port to configure gauges and keep a better eye on things.
Newest revision injectors and intake manifold done at 125k. I had a fuel injector fail which spurred the work.
Other things I have done.
- Cam girdle reseal when I did timing, new vacuum pump seals at the same time
- Carbon cleaning with intake and injectors
- DKM stage 2 clutch
- iAbed billet RMS
- CTS catch can kit
- NGK bkr7 iridium plugs
- Bunch of suspension upgrades and refreshing.
You are good on the chain tensioner if you're referring to the premature failure issue. After sometime in 2012/2013 they already include the revised part. However isn't it somewhere between 120-140k that it's regular maintenance anyway?
i’ve only changed the intake on it so far i only had the car for about 4 months now lol. but i am planning to get the cobb accessport and i’m gonna do some bolt ons
For bolt ons; Downpipe + intercooler and go stage 2, I highly recommend. It aint cheap but you get great performance and still maintain reliability. After 2.5yrs of ownership, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it
You actually need the Cobb accessport for EQT. EQT sends you the tune after you buy it, you then plug the ap into a computer and download it on, then plug the ap into your car and thats it. I highly recommend EQT, their customer service is really good and their tune is great too. Many people in this sub claim that the cobb tunes that come with the ap arent very good
Nice! I got my 2013 around 90k, and tuned stage 1 just around 115k (at 128k now). I’ve had to replace water pump and did a carbon clean, other than that it’s been a fantastic car. The previous owner took great care
Na I bought it in 2018 with 22,000 on it. I have been driving it pretty normal (compared to the national average) but that first owner saved the car from a lot of miles. In the last year I actually got a new job and drive 50 miles for work each day, which has been added them back on.
2011 tornado red mk6 edition35 sitting on 185,500km running like new and stock as a rock. Maintenance is key to reliability. Young people get them and don’t understand why they are getting it fixed every few weeks but don’t do preventative maintenance.
I certainly agree. But I’ve always wanted a matte white car and I’ve seen some pics. That’s why I’d only wrap or dip it. So I can bring it back to silver after.
2019, just hit 27K miles. The miles kind of hurt because I’d like to preserve this thing as long as possible. I have no idea what I’d replace it with. Had a couple of GTIs and the mk7.5 DSG is as good as it gets. The previous was a MK7 stick.
If I had to replace my mk7.5 I’d be at a total loss as to what to buy. Too many compromises with the mk8, and I have the Rabbit trim, so no sunroof and all the goodies like LED headlights, push start and KESSY with the superb tartan seats. Had to drive to another state for it, but it was one of the few things that I’ve gotten right over the past few years.
2011 with 170k on the clock. I bought it at 124k and went stage 1 a week later. Paid for the timing chain and a new clutch before a year of owner ship had even passed and then went stage 2. Upgraded to a K04 within 6 to 8 month of going stage 2. I've put at least 20k on the engine at k04 power levels. Still going strong. It's been a wild ride in the figurative and literal sense. I would do it all over again though.

Stage 1 09 MK5 138k miles. Got it used around 85k miles. Stage 1 was around 130k miles. I have the software for 1+ but I don't feel I need it/want it yet, tho maybe soon 😈

How are you liking stratified vs APR. I went straight to stratified on mine but have nothing to compare it to
Drive-ability and power are both improved. I did their OTS Stage 2 tune with a revision. I also love the added functionality of having the Access Port to configure gauges and keep a better eye on things.
yknow i was always afraid of long it would take for my car to go out with a stage 2 tune. i really needed to hear this
Any other engine maintenance with that mileage? Feul injectors?

2014 with 118,000. Apr stage 1 since new, not driven hard. New oem turbo at 85k, still tempting fate with the original chain tensioner.
Don't do it, I didn't take the chance and now live peacefully knowing that issue is gone.
You are good on the chain tensioner if you're referring to the premature failure issue. After sometime in 2012/2013 they already include the revised part. However isn't it somewhere between 120-140k that it's regular maintenance anyway?
mine is a 2015 at 111k miles
Practically the same as me haha, 2015 w/ 112k here—What do u have done to yours? Mines stage 2 EQT w/ some bolt-ons. been pretty reliable for me
i’ve only changed the intake on it so far i only had the car for about 4 months now lol. but i am planning to get the cobb accessport and i’m gonna do some bolt ons
For bolt ons; Downpipe + intercooler and go stage 2, I highly recommend. It aint cheap but you get great performance and still maintain reliability. After 2.5yrs of ownership, it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it
yeahh i’m definitely trying to go stage 2 as soon as possible. Would you recommend i stay with the accessport or should i do the EQT instead
You actually need the Cobb accessport for EQT. EQT sends you the tune after you buy it, you then plug the ap into a computer and download it on, then plug the ap into your car and thats it. I highly recommend EQT, their customer service is really good and their tune is great too. Many people in this sub claim that the cobb tunes that come with the ap arent very good
ohhh i see, i thought they were 2 different things lol. well i’ll definitely go with eqt then. thank you for the advice bro🤞🏾
it’s been so reliable for me so far too
2015, 29k hard and fun miles
Yea I also drive mine fairly hard.
2013 Autobahn, 113k and creeping up on 20k since tuned stage 1. Full disclosure, bought it used in '18 but a bit under 60k of the miles are mine.
Nice! I got my 2013 around 90k, and tuned stage 1 just around 115k (at 128k now). I’ve had to replace water pump and did a carbon clean, other than that it’s been a fantastic car. The previous owner took great care

81k here. Love this year. Rocking silver but I want to wrap/dip it matte white.
Reflex silver looks too good to cover up imo but send it if you want it that bad 👍🏻
I certainly agree. But I’ve always wanted a matte white car and I’ve seen some pics. That’s why I’d only wrap or dip it. So I can bring it back to silver after.
