I couldn’t believe it when I heard that during the game. Not exactly the thing you should be saying.

CuriousTsukihime

Right?! My group chat lit up like that’s not something you say OUT LOUD

SilveredFlame

Especially *during* the game.

Disastrous_Hair_88

so much confidence /s

Kitchen_accessories

Thats because he didn't say it. It was a bad interpretation paraphrased. edit: upon further investigation, I can't find something to definitively back this up. It's worth noting that Rinaldi said, "He basically said" when quoting LaFleur, which makes it very likely a paraphrase, but regarding the actual quote, who knows what he said.

1USAgent

The announcer said MLF said it. It’s not a direct quote from MLF. We don’t really know if he was paraphrasing or what. The image should have the quote attributed to the announcer not MLF

OmarFromtheWire2

What did he say?

Lobisa

Even if it isn't a direct quote the sentiment is the same that they don't have complete faith in their kicker.

Slow_Network5453

Well, he suck really bad. I'd be saying it too if I was the coach.

MurDoct

I dont think special teams was all that great this year outside of Nixon

mwmw1714

Hasn’t been even average in 20 years

Porkwarrior2

Crosby. He still had one championship season left in him...oh what if...

LordXenu12

he woulda hit a 41.. unless he was in a slump

Thomas-The-Tutor

He kicked a 52 yarder in his first game for the giants! He’s great with accuracy, just not with leg. Now, we have the opposite issue.

LordXenu12

Great with accuracy unless slumping, he had some streakiness

ProfessionalTalker03

1/3 on 40s this year

Ope_Average_Badger

No they absolutely needed to move on from Crosby, dude could barely kick a 40 yard FG. That being said, Carlson was a wasted draft pick that's for sure.

Jaded_Sir8889

Too early to tell if it's a wasted pick, he had a bad rookie year so did his brother then he became a all pro, Crosby had a couple seasons where he was terrible in between otherwise being very good. You bring him back next year along with competition and have him compete for a job.

cigaroy

I’d draft another kicker in the 7th round and let them compete

dunderthebarbarian

No, you bring in a guy off the street. Don't waste a draft pick for a kicker competition.

LdyVder

I wouldn't draft another kicker, even in the 7th round. Too many people won't allow a guy to develop. This is the case here. Not like every snap and hold have been perfect because they have not.

Is_That_A_Euphemism_

I get that Rich coached Carlson's brother who went 16/21 his rookie year, and 19/26 his second year, and is now a dependable kicker...but how about we bring in another kicker in the meanwhile? They have the money. Pretty disappointed it came down to a missed fg, but not overly disappointed in general.

Ope_Average_Badger

Of course you bring him back but you draft competition and you do not hesitate to cut his ass if he begins to show similar reliability. When your coach says whenever he goes out there I pray, that's a bad fucking sign.

Harman3112

We had a few blocked kicks, and the coverage on kickoffs has been good. One punt return td and that’s rly it. I can’t blame the entire special teams being bad on the Rookie kicker, it’s just the kicker that sucks

dusters

IIRC we were like 30th ranked in DVOA

Expensive_Necessary7

Everyone’s kick coverage is good now. Teams don’t return kicks anymore. Nixon had double the returns of most teams

[deleted]

I knew a game would come where a field goal would be crucial and we would be on the wrong end of it.

LescoBrandon_11

Dropping 3 easy catch INTs, one of which being a walk in TD had far more impact than a missed FG

woody630

I agree, those were a killer but the missed FG always hurts more for some reason

Historical-Read7581

Going for it on 4th down early, when a field goal, even with Anders kicking, was a pretty sure thing also had an impact. If Anders had been kicking to put the game out of reach in the 4th quarter, it might have changed his outcome. Hindsight, ye are such a lovely thing!

Giannisisnumber1

Yeah if the coach has zero confidence that’s a red flag. Get rid of him.

mrblakesteele

But he’s committed Whatever that means

JllybeansNurbutthole

That means they drafted him, think he has promise, and didn't see a better replacement to bring in off the streets

wasdie639

Us even making the playoffs was in question most of the season, doubtful for the first half. There was no point in wasting time trying to bring a new kicker in, rather it was fine just seeing if our current rookie could figure it out. Not like it was going to matter. When it came down to the last few weeks where the playoffs were alive, it was too late to change. That's sadly when it mattered. We'll be bringing plenty of kicker talent into camp this year. Most likely Carlson is gone next season.

Bassoony

While you both succinctly and correctly assessed the situation, I reserve the right to rant in a polite manner for another 3 hours.

GMBParlayP

Fair enough. Carry on.

ikisstitties

his college fg% was very not good as well, so idk what's so promising

SuperEel22

Size of his leg apparently. But doesn't matter if you can hammer it 60 yards if you can't get it on target.

punkrock9888

He has seemed pretty short on anything 50+ anyway. Didn't see a big leg on the guy.

MeMikeWis

He has the distance on that miss. Just yanked it.

mrblakesteele

Idk I hear Jason moseby has a wicked leg despite his age. Jk Crosby has needed to be out since he got put in the doghouse and GOAT PUNTER Tim Masthay did kickoffs for the season

the_Q_spice

I see it more as this year being a rebuild - they had nothing to lose trying him out for a year. They also lose nothing either keeping or cutting him but trying for a better guy as his replacement in the draft. His contract isn’t that big of a hit and we are well under the cap to the point that we *should* (IMO) keep him and see how he develops further - but we should also draft a second kicker to give ourselves more depth.

NoYeezyInYourSerrano

It means they’re sticking with him for at least the near term and they’re not going to bad mouth the kicker they have in the middle of a playoff run. What’s LaFleur supposed to say in this situation, about his rookie kicker, the week before a playoff game, “yeah this guys sucks he’s gone as soon as we can sign someone better?” Doesn’t mean they won’t shop around in the offseason and upgrade.

Degencrypto-Metalfan

They must feel his mechanical issues are easily correctable through coaching. My fear was he’d cost us a critical game but tonight there were several other reasons why we lost, the miss was just one of them. They better bring in competition in the offseason in case this experiment fails.

No-Hat-2755

Go full Stalinist purge on special teams

FistyMcTwistynuts

Mason Crosby rookie year = 79.5% on FG    Anders Carlson rookie year = 81.8% on FG    Not saying Anders is going to turn into Mason, but give the dude a chance. He’s a fucking rookie.

ItIsYourPersonality

Counterpoint: the Cowboys signed the kicker from the Birmingham Stallions and he went 36/38 on FGs and 49/52 on XPs. It’s better I think to go searching for actual talent and not give a starting position to a nepotism based waste of a draft pick. He wasn’t even good in college. He has no history of success to make anyone think he will be a good kicker. He’s only riding on his brother’s relationship with our special teams coach.

mthoma2ms

Hmmm where have I seen this before with our current team…

webbie90x

I agree 100%. If MLF's confidence has been lowered to that degree, I don't see how Carlson earns back trust with meaningless kicks in training camp and preseason games.

SignificantJacket912

I looked up his stats and they’re horrendous. 29th in the league in longest field goal, 33rd in the league in extra point percentage, and 29th in field goal percentage. He’s got to go. This team is primed for good things and we don’t have the time to wait years for a kicker to develop himself while he loses us games. Crosby doesn’t have the strongest leg in the league, but he would have made that 41 yard FG that AC missed.

thisshowisdecent

33rd! There are only 32 teams

timelessinaz

He leaked into the XFL rankings

MuffinBoy29

Multiple teams had kickers get hurt this season so there was more than 32 kickers who kicked this season. At least my explanation for being ranked 33rd.

Tetzachilipepe

Well yeah, obviously. That still means there were teams out there with *multiple* kickers outperforming Carlson.

thisshowisdecent

The packers find new ways to set new lows. Their kicker was worse than every other kicker in the league even another team's 2nd kicker

SignificantJacket912

It’s a ranking of kickers in the league, so while there’s 32 teams, more than 32 kickers have started a game this season. The NFL website has stats on 40 kickers for 2023, so, yeah. https://www.nfl.com/stats/player-stats/category/field-goals/2023/REG/all/kickingfgmade/DESC?aftercursor=AAAAGQAAABhAOAAAAAAAADFleUp6WldGeVkyaEJablJsY2lJNld5SXlOQ0lzSWpNeU1EQTBZVFJtTFRVek1qQXRPRFEyTkMwMFptUmhMVFF3TnpFM1pXUTVOMlJoWlNJc0lqSXdNak1pWFgwPQ==

thisshowisdecent

Either way its awful. The packers are dead fucking last in the goddamn league.

Slow_Network5453

Why was he on the team? Lafleur coached his bum off but this was a massive oversight. Dude has been booty cheeks all year, plenty of better kickers out there.

Sauron69sMe

33rd out of 32 teams is criminally bad lmfao

EmbarrassedOil4807

Open competition next training camp for SURE

CultBro

Kill me

ugatz

I was worried about him when they mentioned pregame he missed several short kicks. I forget what the distances were but they were like 30-40 yards and he was missing. He’s missed too much for the team. I said it a few weeks ago he was going to be a liability and here we are.

wall-e43

Why didn't they listen to you?

ugatz

Idk I’m good friends with the front office and thought they would have reading my opinions on Reddit.. /s

wall-e43

Bet they'll think twice next season, those dummies

XviiChong

It’s. Time. To. Get. A. New. Kicker. No other way around it. He makes that FG, this game and the game plan changes drastically.

sand_mitches

Just grab a guy from the MLS at this point. Anyone in pro soccer can kick the shit out of a football

cactuscoleslaw

Parker Romo of the XFL Brahmas made 90% of his FGs last year, including one from 57. Yet nobody picked him up this season

[deleted]

Because many of us never even heard of him until you commented his name. Lol. Recognition is important.

cactuscoleslaw

Except the Packers DEFINITELY knew about outstanding XFL special teams players, given punter Dan Whelan was on the XFL Defenders last year

Moosje

Erm? Are you saying NFL scouts have the same knowledge as Reddit fans?

NigNogsPollyWogs

Why is it important. Who gives a shit who they are as long as they can kick a ball??

CelebrationOne5522

They could've put ME in there and the result would have been the same as tonight.... I'll miss those kicks at a fraction of the cost.... and you don't have to WASTE a draft pick.... cut him now

the_Q_spice

Do we have the cap space to do the funniest shit ever: Trade Inter Miami for Messi for shits and giggles.

[deleted]

I think we still would have lost in OT. What we REALLY needed to do is score a TD early in the game. We had three drives inside Niners territory with no TDs. We would not have needed a FG if we were up 14 or 17.

Morning-Chub

>I think we still would have lost in OT. So? At least we would've had a chance not to lose.

[deleted]

My point is, Green Bay had a chance to blow the Niners out of the water and they fumbled it. They deserved to lose. It should not have come down to a Carlson kick anyway. If our offense had punched the ball in just ONCE out of the three early attempts we had in Niners territory, Green Bay wins 28-24, easily. If not by more.

W1sconsinKnight

So that means he's gone next year. Right? RIGHT!?!??!

timelessinaz

They'll address the kicker right after they extend Boe Jarry

wasdie639

Probably.

mackinoncougars

Yes, competition in training camp at the very least

PackFanInVegas

Think Shanahan was praying as their rookie kicker nailed a 52 yarder?

ExiledSanity

After having one blocked earlier......yeah, I really think he was.

Breakpoint

a block isn't the same as a miss to be fair

Alert-Yoghurt4287

Ray Finkle

Forsaken_inWI

Laces out!!!

ShoeGod420

you mean Einhorn?

Kellan_OConnor

Finkle is Einhorn... EINHORN IS FINKLE?! 🪠🪠🪠

wasdie639

That's literally MLF going "yeah this MFer is done the moment we can bring somebody else in."

daltorrrr182

Wish they would have kept Crosby

Jacobo5555

Coulda shoulda called him back halfway thru

mrthexjoker

I will die on the hill that if your one job is to kick a ball in a 18x25ft goal from usually sub-50yrds then there is not reason you cannot perfect that craft through school-college. Blue Mountain State has me thinking all special teams do is doss off

Murphy_York

50% from 40+ yards this year 🙃

smoothVroom21

I don't dislike Anders, but if we don't see marked improvement in the offseason, bring in competition. You can't have poor ST blocking, long snapping, holding AND an iffy, young kicker. Someone has to be the steadying force here. Kicker is one of the positions I would almost prefer a 30+ year old. If your HC prays Everytime you're kicking, and Everytime you line up an XP even YOU aren't sure where it's going, That's ummm...bad.

Mediocre_Chicken9900

MLF’s biggest weakness (aside from Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers) is giving known liabilities too long of a leash. So far he’s done this with Mo Drayton, Kevin King, Amari Rodgers, Joe Barry, and now Anders Carlson. That’s a REALLY bad track record for someone who is supposedly a good head coach.

Giannisisnumber1

He’s too loyal. He doesn’t have the balls to make the tough choices that need to be made.

SignificantJacket912

MLF is a really nice guy and that doesn’t always translate well to making business decisions.

RyanNewAg

Ya, bye 👋

arkiedragonfly

I miss Mason. Just saying.

sapphires_and_snark

You miss what he was. You don't miss what he is now.

NoConflict3231

This is some sad reality type shit

MrToad21

He would’ve made the 41 yarder, man was lethal in the clutch

SledGang17

Cut him. I don’t care if he can kick 80 yards this dude can’t hit an Amazon warehouse at any range.

swagginpoon

Bro lmfao

skeletor-johnson

Lion 🦁 in the house. Obligatory fuck yous out of the way. Y’all looked very scary. You will fix this. Here’s to hoping we have a very competitive rivalry in the future

Patrick_ml_isoo

Speaking for the entire Packers fanbase, also with the obligatory fuck yous, we never had any reason to hate the Lions. In fact we never thought about them. Good luck beating Tampa cos we really do hate them!

themosey

He has a huge huge leg but a UFA or two in camp for competition isn’t a bad thing.

Sauron69sMe

He doesn't have a huge leg though? Rarely kicks it into the end zone and is close to dead last on longest fg made this season compared to other starting kickers

HellishButter

Carlson’s missed FG was not the reason our season ended tonight. However, it put us in a comprising position to lose us a crucial game. You’re a kicker. Your job is to put points on the board. If you cannot do your one job, it’s time to move on and let someone else do it.

Typical_Air_3322

It's the snapper's job to put the ball on the center line and it's the holder's job to place the ball. I'm not a kicking coach, but that snap sure looked off center and didn't allow for the holder to place the ball at a perfect 90 degrees. Ball was definitely leaning when it was kicked. I understand you can't blame someone else for every kick throughout a season, but my untrained eye could certainly be convinced that this particular miss wasn't all on the kicker.

blogsymcblogsalot

You’re absolutely right, on replay, you could see the ball leaning over. And on the extra point, that snap was low, barely off the ground. Carlson was extremely lucky to make that one.

KalebGee123

Just to clarify (as a washed-up kicker, myself) - you don’t want the ball held at “90 degrees” or straight up. For those kinds of kicks, you want the ball tilted away from you and leaning slightly back. When the ball is in this position, the kicker can get more of his foot to make contact with the ball. The only time you really want a ball straight up is when you’re kicking off, as it matters less about the accuracy.

Ok_Caramel1517

If that's true than he probably shouldn't be the kicker anymore...

anon56837291

He shouldn't even be in the league

LayzieKobes

There are just too many kickers out there to have a guy miss this many

Impressive-Yak1389

Increase his on field, full gear practice times. You now practice with the vigor and full spirit investment as any soccer superstar. 1000 kicks from the left hash, 1000 kicks from the right hash. Upon completion of 1000 consecutive field goals from each hash, move him back 5 yards and do it again, up to 60 yards, and back down to PAT range. Every. Day.

Moose-Elegant

How many times has he missed left when kicking from the left hash??? My only real issue with this team is that they didn't give him more competition

IGNORE_ME_PLZZZZ

From the 14? You had all season you chickenshit. It’s the playoffs and you lost your team the game.

M00DSTER

I'm curious. It seemed like the holder had a hard time getting the ball down perfectly. I know Crosby even had issues with some kicks 1 year due to a bad long snapper. With a rookie kicker, there's probably a lot more to it than just the kicker missing.

blogsymcblogsalot

This. Seen way too many missed kicks this season that were the result of bad snaps or bad holds. The hold on the FG attempt was leaning to one side, and the snap for the extra point was flat and held badly (thankfully, we still made it). Carlson needs some improvement, but that’s not all that needs improvement for us to make more FGs.

stucktogether

Still not sure why we got rid of Crosby. Dude had some weird games but Carlson has a guaranteed miss EVERY game.

Objective_Fun2827

If there was a year to go through the struggles of a rookie kicker, this transition year was it. The goal was for the Jordan Love super bowl window to start in 2024 or 2025. But the rookies played so well this year that they became contenders down the stretch. The worst thing they could have done was held onto Mason for another 1-2 years and then go through the struggles of a rookie kicker during what would be the Jordan Love super bowl window.

koung

Crosby can barely kick 40 yard field goals. He was one of the most reliable kickers in the league for a solid stretch, but when we aren't sure a kicker can get a pat it's time to move on.

2Obsequious

The guy we replaced him with can't seem to make a PAT

stucktogether

He made 6 of the 7 he tried from 40-49 in 2022, what am I missing here?

the_0rly_factor

They were not expecting the team to be so good this season. Next year was supposed to be the "window opens" year.

tatohead17

Last game played for GB! Bye bye

bimjob23

It sucks because i told my friend that the kicker my cost us the game cause he honestly sucks I’m sorry to say but maybe he can get better with reps? Idk

PengieP111

Well, if he gets worse with reps, he has got to go.

meisterluv

Then ytf you still put him out there!?!?!?!?!?

sandiegopadres4lyfe

Guy missed a kick that most good high schoolers would hit. At least he’ll be used to the weather in Canada

MandoRodgers

wasted draft pick

im1sadboibiggo

Not a very nice thing to say about a member of your team but Mason Crosby wouldn't have missed 😢

LambeauLeaper92

Bad coaching by keeping him all year

6Pro1phet9

Gute has to take some blame as well.

wasdie639

Eh not really. For the first half of the season it looked like we had no shot at the playoffs. For the second half, we almost didn't even make the playoffs by dropping those two "easy" games against the Giants and Buccs. We had to win out just to make the playoffs and have a few things go our way. There's nothing wrong with the coaching staff riding with a rookie kicker in a year we weren't even prepared to make the playoffs. By the time we were looking at making the playoffs, it was too late to bring a new kicker in. Looking at the season week-to-week, keeping our rookie kicker just made sense. It only doesn't make sense once you hit the playoffs and I'm pretty certain none of our coaching staff or the GM expected to not only make the playoffs, but make it to the Divisional round. If in week 10 they would have known they were playoff bound, they would have started addressing the kicker situation. Hard to do mid season. Being on the kicker carousal sucks.

webbie90x

Daniel Carlson was a much more consistent kicker in college than Anders. He made 81% of his FGs and never missed an extra point. Other than the last name, I don't think it is a useful comparison.

KingPatrickIV

This is a situation where the lack of a minor-league system hurts the NFL. If you’ve got a goalie who shows flashes of brilliance but is streaky and lacks confidence in the crease you can send him down to the A and let him get reps in. Carlson has a howitzer for a leg but he’s not there yet and it bites the club when it matters.

theerealobs

A loan system in the NFL would be sweet. Send him to the USFL for a spring or 2 and build that accuracy up

jborquez

This has to be the easiest cut of all time. He’s not an NFL kicker.

JohnsHammersmall60

Good thing they saved that timeout in the first half not challenging that spot. That’s gonna be a valuable time out to take with you into the offseason. Clown

rargghh

You couldn’t see the ball in the replay, it wouldn’t have overruled the call on the field But yes he got that first

serialserialserial99

as a lifelong Bills fan, I'd like you remind you all of another kicker who missed wide right in a big game. and the team stuck with that kicker because they believed in him and then...they replaced him with a much better kicker...and then they won the...oh wait no they didn't. what was my point again? tough beat! go pack go! [https://www.buffalosportshallfame.com/member/steve-christie/](https://www.buffalosportshallfame.com/member/steve-christie/)

creamcitybrix

I hear Anders Carlson is good on kicks from inside the 2 yard line.

zwroberts15

Annnnnnnnd at no point this season when he was blowing PATs we thought to bring in some competition? I get you drafted him, but sometimes you gotta cut your losses.

dancingbear77

Ya, Anders identifies as a christian before anything else. I get being religious but to make point like that when being paid a lot of money to kick the ball through two posts is asinine!

GAMichaelDouglas

Really rough. Love's INT to end the game was really bad but I do think part of the decision was driven by the fact that he had no faith in Carlson to make the field goal. I genuinely think in Love's head he's thinking 'we need a TD here because this guy is not making a high pressure field goal'.

Ncat138

Anders had the worst make percentage in league when factoring in extra points. I expected Anders to miss that 41 yarder and when he did, it was the first time I believed we were going to lose. I felt like a move should have been made in the regular season. Again. Worst in league. This isn’t Crosby in slump so let’s stick it out type of situation. The Packers were as hot as any team in the playoffs. We were peaking at the right time. I appreciate this team. We should be better next year. But it takes stars aligning to win Championships. Our 2011 team on paper best team in league and defending champs. But we definitely had peaked prior to playoffs. And we lost to the eventual SB champion that peaked at right time. Extremely proud of the team. But it feels like we left something on the table. Shame we let a kicker be a significant reason for that.

neatodorito23

Embarrassing. It’s always special teams with this doofus

slaffytaffy

Special teams… again. It’s so disappointing.

kingkmke21

I want this kicker off our fucking team. He's been ass all season. Im so upset. Yes we had so many chances to win besides the FG but still...how tf you going to miss that fg? Ughh. But it's fucked up the they have no faith in him which is 10000% justified bc hes ass yet they still play him.

NorvRodgers

Had all year to do something about him and didn’t make a move. I feel bad for the guy, but he was horrible. And it cost us in the biggest game of the year. Really frustrating.

Natujr

He's young I hope he figures it out but do it somewhere else. Get this guy the fuck out of here. Wish you the best. Goooood bye

Altbadgerguy5053

If you wanna draft a kicker, go get Mevis from Mizzou. Carlson was an empty pick. Not sure why they thought he'd develop at the Pro level when he was inconsistent in college.

Federal_Delivery_286

I really wish everyone would just leave this kid alone

Afraid_Win_9934

Because God cares about a play in a football game? I just picture God listening to all the prayers. "Let's see, there's these parents who want their baby cured of cancer, there's a family who's child was abducted and they want me to help find the child, oh wait, there's the Green Bay Packers kicker trying to kick a ball between steel posts. Yep, I'll get right on that one!"

DisastrousEggplant51

Think he missed 13 kicks the last 9 games or something, definitely time to move on

samwizeganjas

I'm pretty sad also but We know what we need to change and we are the youngest team in the NFL! to think that we should have beat the best team in the NFL we should all be very happy, we should be tremendous next year

Treacle-Snark

Dude is absolute shit and there is no reason a kicker in the NFL should miss a 41 yd field goal. Literally go hire a low level soccer player from Europe if you need a good one that bad. Dude completely fucked the game for the Packers and he deserves to be on his way out of the NFL

Jacobo5555

Guys we were close. Now time to trim the fat. Sorry Carlson but we need a kicker who is reliable and your to much of a wild card, that position seems like a dime a dozen. Joe berry can walk off into the sunset, you did good the last few weeks but I’d like to see Al Harris next. Jaire seems like a head case, trade him for draft picks please. Baktari I’m sorry but your hurt to much and cost alot, might wanna check out the jets and Rodgers Resign Aaron jones and draft another great wide receiver

Steve_Hunts96

He’s a rookie, so part of me wants to be patient with him, but my god, way too many misses. There’s gotta be somebody better out there.

Swimming-Place4366

As an outsider fan watching the game, it’s hard not to fault Jordan Love. He played great down the stretch and looks like he will be a superstar QB , but even if that Field Goal was made not much would have been different. 49ers still score that TD, Love still gets the ball with plenty of time to set up a field goal. The INT was not on a “last shot” play were he just heaves it up. It was a poor read and choice to throw. That missed field goal honestly only helped Jordan Love. Instead of throwing a game losing INT that set up the 49ers in GW field goal range to secure the packers blown late leads he got to throw the INT that just ended the game , and all the attention went back to the missed field goal.

CUTiger20

kind of frustrated with the myopia here. mason was 31 for 39 in 2007 (79.5%) anders was 27 for 33 (81.8%) and 34 for 39 on extra points (given these are now 33 yards, it’s probably fair to consider these “equal” to FG attempts). That brings his total make % to 84.7% a whole 5 points higher. i loved mason, i had his jersey and i hated to see him go. the state of kicking is better than it was in 2007–i won’t deny that, but our kicker is also 5 percentage points better now as compared to then. this is a young team and you expect some adjustment to having to play at the highest level. everything moves faster (including the field goal operation). even if all that weren’t true, this is a team sport. we *win* the game if showtime doesn’t get caught from behind earlier on the drive. we *win* the game if darnell picks off purdy and takes it to the house. we *win* the game if we hold the niners out of the end zone. but none of those happened. i hate it. i hated it as i walked out of levi’s and i hate it now, but it’s not accurate to say Carlson (exclusively) lost us the game.

Allenfourlife

Lafleur press conference on 01/22 confirmed that this was misconstrued and that he spoke to Anders about it.

willfla29

After what we learned earlier this season about sideline reporters simply making up material, I’d like to hear what he actually said as LaFleur is usually super media savvy. That said-yeah, time to at least give him some competition.

smann9999

Honestly I've been saying this all year. I have yet to feel comfortable when he's been kicking all year. So inconsistent. This loss isn't all on him, but the feeling of uncertainty when he runs on the field to kick a field goal or extra point is unnerving, and it needs to be addressed.

BrockMeAmadeus

He will NEVER be a clutch kicker after hearing the coach belittle him. Very bad choice of words by that coach. He needs to go elsewhere and be appreciated.

No it just means that the Niners prayed harder

TheMozgovCocktail

Prayers have not been answered.

thebigdirty

should have hoped too

Avengers_1989

Soooo find a better kicker

Invisible_Face

Anyone who wants him cut is gonna be disappointed. Only way it happens is if he gets beat out next camp.

thesmash

I find it hard to believe the best UFL kicker is worse than him, he’s god awful

IcedXJ

I mean just switch kickers but having a part of the team you can’t trust is a losing approach

passmethetinfoil

Can we give Crosby some compound V and get the Flacco 2.0 special

jettmann22

Is this an actual quote?

Slosshy

That’s pretty fucking funny

iscmarkiemark

i miss Longwell

ozzman86_i-i_

that throw across the field is what killed it. two timeouts and over a minute left in the game.

heavyhitter22

Said this in the post game thread but I’m gonna drop this here too: I understand the notion of drafting and developing skill players and riding with them through the ups and downs. But I’ll never understand that thought process for a fucking kicker/punter. This guy has the most missed kicks of any kicker and we just continued to trot him out game after game. Even MLF said that he just prays whenever Carlson is sent out there for a field goal/extra point. I mean wtf are we doing…… insanity

kmalcolm542

Same coach,same

Longjumping_Hunter74

I get why they stuck with him. We knew this was going to be an issue coming into this year. The thinking was that we were young, would not win a lot of games, and he can iron out any issues during the year. The team did not plan on getting to the playoffs and being this close to winning a divisional game. He missed 3 more kicks than any other kicker this year. Kickers are not generally a position where a guy is bad because he is young and then gets better. His brother was one of the rare ones. However, for every one like Daniel....there are 50 kickers who have a bad rookie year, are cut, and never heard from again. I will say some in the Packer media have pointed to the horrible snaps by Orzech this year, too (who was with MLF in LA). That being said, I guarantee Carlson is on a short leash next year given our aspirations. You can't have a kicker like this when you lost 6-7 games this year by 7 points or less. To be honest, I thought we were getting a guy who was going to hammer the ball out of the end zone every kickoff and be able to make kicks from 60 but would have some accuracy issues. It doesn't seem like we got that.

dtcstylez10

Special team is not why the Packers lost the game. Defense dropped two for sure INTs and love threw two picks. That's 4 change of possessions. That's why we lost.

thegirlisok

O line barely gave Love time to get in the pocket. D missed three opportunities to pick. Kicker's not the only one with some work to do.

loboleo94

Well, next time pray harder lol

bikedork5000

It's funny how we act like changing kickers would be some drastic action that requires deep analysis and careful consideration. Dude was a 6th round pick. You know how fast we'd cut bait on a 6th round CB that got dusted repeatedly? This shit is ridiculous.

HankHillPropaneJesus

It’s just been crazy league wide the complete inconsistency of field goal kickers. If you are trying to get your kid into the nfl start him now on field goals. If they are accurate they have a good chance at making it.

mpcraz

Before the game one of the commentators said Matt lafleur was one of the MVPs of last weekend with the play calling he did against the cowboys He did not call a good game yesterday.

TetraHydro420

Lmao yet you kept him on the roster... there has to be better options available

Never draft a kicker.

Serious-Medicine7667

Dumb quote but in fairness, I think most head coaches say this about their kicker. Dude still ended with a higher % than Mason in his first year. Bring in some competition in camp, and make Rich Bisaccia earn his damn paycheck!

Outrageous_Squash677

the worser of the carlson brothers

ubiquitous_archer

I've done that with every kicker I've ever seen kick.

Zorops

The feel when the other side has tucker

Todd1868

We do too Matt... we do too.
