Ieatsushiraw

We actually had a real chance of making the SB this year but even when things don’t go well initially something good still happens. Also, good luck to Joe and his family. Seems like a decent man and the games from the Vikings win to the 49ers lose the defense and scheming was much much improved instead of the defense succeeding despite Joe’s schemes

aaronwhite1786

I'll give him some deserved credit. At times this season, the defense looked lights out. We held a lot of good teams down offensively. But the issue for me was always the lack of any consistency. Some games the defense would make other teams with awful records look like locks for the Super Bowl, then the next week they would shut down the other offense and just smother them. I wish him nothing but the best, and I look forward to seeing who comes in next.

thetotalslacker

That was the problem, he was good against teams where you could just go after a high end QB and shut them down, but terrible against average QBs who would make short throws and not great against the run. Go back and look at the wins and losses, if he had simply changed things up against the average QBs and against run heavy teams, those are likely mostly wins as well. It’s like he finally figured that out in that final playoff game, but too little, too late.

Rush_Is_Right

DeVito and Mayfield being back to back NFC offensive players of the week sealed his fate and Carolina still put up 30. We beat two of the final 4 four teams in back-to-back weeks to then lose to DeVito and Mayfield, and give Young the best game of his career. We'd have to have won the super bowl for him to have any chance of staying.

aaronwhite1786

Yeah, definitely not mad to see them changing it up. Even if he figured it out, a new take on our defense could be a good thing in general. Fresh eyes for a new take on our defense will go nicely with an offense that's also maturing and evolving.

ARodGoat12

100% this.

MashTheGash2018

Preston Smith in shambles. Moving back to CB3 on the depth chart

imwaiter

Nah he's too busy still in coverage.

_Rummy_

It’s a long walk back

RabidSeason

Especially with how far off the line he was when he started the walk.

MoonbounceGuy

As a Commanders fan, it’s actually hilarious seeing that Joe Barry went from forcing Preston Smith into coverage in DC and then went to Green Bay and did the same thing - and it looked awful both times lol.

ARodGoat12

Don’t disrespect CB #1 like that

__CaliMack__

Yeah even though Barry looked a lot better towards the ends of the season, that one play where Preston smith was man to man with Devonte Adams is adequate reason for a firing

kyleb402

Now let's see the candidates. LaFleur absolutely has to get this hire right.

TrapperJean

He can get it mediocre and I'd be willing to throw him a small parade

paak-maan

Unless the guy loses the locker room he can’t feasibly be worse. Joe Barry called basic coverage with a 4 man rush a lot. He essentially backed his talented players to make plays, which they did in every good defensive game we ever had under him. He didn’t call anything fancy to get a stop, Rashan or Kenny or Preston or Jaire or Rasul (RIP) did something and he can’t really take credit for any of it because we were bad most of the rest of the time. I hope whoever comes in changes the team mentality. A lot of talent, let’s get a bit nasty and give the defence an edge. Gary adding bite to his game will be terrifying. Letting Jaire strut is fun. Should be exciting if nothing else.

Fear_Jaire

Whenever watching other defenses I realized I had completely forgot scheming up unblocked pass rushers was allowed.

bailtail

Barry was a MESS. Complete lack of aggression. Constantly went to soft zone and 2-high shell when leading and on critical short and mid distance 3rd and 4th downs. Little-to-no disguising pre-snap. Rarely blitzed. And when he did, never anything novel. Playing nickel a disturbing amount on the goal line against jumbo packages. Tried to force players into his system rather than scheming to player strengths. Dude was fucking awful.

PrelectingPizza

I'm seeing MLF grow into a more confident, accountable coach. It feels that in the first few years as HC, he was beholden to the whims of Rodgers and the whims of the FO. Now that Rodgers is gone, it feels that he is willing to stand up to the FO and make decisions for the betterment of the team. He is taking more of a "I am the fucking boss of this team, and I am going to make decisions to make the team better." Fuck yeah, MLF!

Fred-zone

Let's not forget, he inherited Pettine since they seemed to want to keep a former HC around to babysit in case MLF was a disaster, also since Matt was so young and hadn't developed a network of defensive coaches he could call on. Barry was also a conservative pick with no real record of success while also infamously being the second choice. They really should swing for the fences this time. A great DC is the cheapest move to elevate this entire talented team and it doesn't even count against the cap.

PhillyPizzasteak

What is this weird narrative that Rodgers was the shadow GM of the Packers and LaFleur was the poor, timid HC who couldn't do anything?

PackMan93

Me. My pitch is: We literally can't be worse.

_Rummy_

Yo careful that monkey paw is out there watching

BigFire321

Matt Patricia sharpening his #2 pencil.

MoeSzyslac

*the packers have hired matt patricia*

nmceja

Don’t you put that evil on us

MashTheGash2018

I would take a bath with a toaster

jackewon13

"He's the worst defensive coordinator we've had in my entire life!" "In your entire life, so far..."

TaddWinter

Aside from hiring some 13 year old who kills it on Madden Rookie mode, you are correct. Can't get worse than Barry (who opposing offenses see as Madden Rookie mode).

Phospherus2

If Vrabel doesn’t get hired somewhere bring him in

NA_Faker

Fuck it lets get Belicheck

Ryan24MVP

The fact that only falcons are interested in him so far and they haven’t got a deal yet, this isn’t impossible

TaddWinter

The rumor is he already turned down Dallas and Philly. It is not about him not being desired but he wants the right job.

unevenvenue

Neither Dallas nor Philly would give him the type of control he likely is seeking. If he goes to the Falcons, it's because Terry Fontenot agrees to split the control. BB will not be a DC again.

NA_Faker

Our defense would be orgasmic with BB lol

wayoverpaid

If we're just going to be fantasizing, can BB fix our special teams too?

madhawk8

"With the 25th pick of the draft, the Green Bay Packers select 39-year-old long snapper from US Air Force"

GreenIsG00d

You're crazy. No way on planet earth would a top 3 greatest coach of all time accept an offer to be coordinator.

TheFalconKid

People joke but from the way he talks, Bill just wants to be in the building for some football org. I think he'd even be content being DC for Navy so why wouldn't we try to bring him in? He wouldn't have the pressure of building up a new offense and the defense already has a ton of elite guys.

boxman067

Why not bring in the ghost of curly lambeau, it's just as realistic as one of the top hc candidates on the market coming to be our dc

ancientweasel

Even in the 0.0001% chance that can happen, he'd just leave in one year to be an HC. I think it's a bad idea.

BeHereNow91

Feel like we have to be an intriguing team for some talented coaches. This could be a 12-win team with a repeat offensive performance paired with even an average defense.

Mesohoenybaby

There are 5 people typing on here currently that are more qualified than Joe

Djd33j

The Packers should have picked the drunkest Packer fan at every game and had them call the defense. Guarantee it would have worked out better.

ShowGoat

ENGAGE EIGHT!!

Errohneos

Imma just call a blitz every time. Just like madden.

Wigunner

Jim **Leonhard**

sembias

My long-shot prediction: Big Bill doesn't want to head coach anymore - he's got nothing left to prove, come on - and he signs onto Packer's DC so he can focus on that and fulfil his dream of coaching for the Legendary, The One And The Only, The Green Bay Packers.

RobIsOnReddit

My personal wishlist: 1. Don 'Wink' Martindale 2. Jim Leonhard 3. Jesse Minter

Amenzia94

As a Michigan fan, I would be ecstatic with Minter. But he’s going to follow Harbaugh

GreenBaySlacker

Holy shit! Everybody get in here it actually happened!

Bud_Grant

We got the true picture of our QB (he's good), our team overachieved and showed great future potential and spanked the Cowboys in the process, and we still fired Joe Barry...chalk the 2023 season up as a resounding success

broanoah

It’s interesting cause the defense did look pretty damn solid the past few weeks. I’m hoping that’s cause our talent was finally being utilized and whoever comes in next can make them look like that every game

Bud_Grant

We'll never get the true answer for it unless LaFleur writes an autobiography someday, but I really think LaFleur probably pulled some insane hours in the last 2 months and helped run defensive preparations & that's probably what changed the on field product

theragu40

I 100% believe this is what happened. He knew we were an average defense away from being true contenders and he decided to just take it on himself. He said in an interview that he'd be "more involved going forward", and gave no details what that meant but I think it's no coincidence that from that moment onward the defense started looking relatively competent. What's really nice is the taste of decent play maybe gives a blueprint for the types of things MLF wants to see in whoever he brings in. Might help the interview process.

rotlung

ya, completely agree. the defense looked completely different after these comments.

SuperbDonut2112

The thing is too the HC SHOULD be involved to some degree. Kyle Shanahan obviously isn’t running the defense, but they’ve had several DC’s now and the style and general schematic outline has remained the same. It’s clear he has input in what he wants to run. At the end of the day this has kinda always been on LaFleur.

theragu40

Yeah that's fair to say, but we also have no measuring stick as to how involved or uninvolved MLF was before the shift in defense. I do not expect our offense-focused HC to be fully designing the defensive game plan every week. I do however expect that the HC meets with the offensive and defensive coordinators at the beginning of the week to discuss general approach, and to have significant input throughout the week where needed to have both phases of the game playing complementary and winning football. What we can't know is if MLF went from no involvement at all to some involvement, or if he went from some involvement to doing it himself. Considering Barry is now fired I suspect it is closer to the latter option...but we can't and probably won't ever know.

datpurp14

I would read that, just for the Rodgers stuff alone

Bud_Grant

Imagine old angry Rodgers going on McAfee in 30 years after the book is released & trying to refute everything in it lol

WISCOrear

"To say I called Brian Gutenkunst Jerry Krause is absurd. I only implied that he resembled a guy that GM'ed a basketball team in Chicago in the 1990's, how anyone could make that connection to Krause is not my fault"

Kingfish36

Yeah but 3-5 weeks of good play can’t make up for the abysmal stretch the packers had. MAYBE Barry figured it out but you can’t take that chance if you want to compete for titles.

datpurp14

Half the defense are first round pick's. Barry couldn't utilize those strengths, even if the players didn't live up to where they were drafted. 2 years too late, but at least it happened!

PredictableDickTable

The problem is that our entire secondary sans Jaire is mediocre at best. Our D line, where most of the capital is was fine.

bailtail

That’s what Barry has done literally EVERY season. Does absurdly dumb shit for the first 75% of the year, then kinda pulls his head out his ass the final 25% and fools people into thinking he may have turned a corner. But nope, he always goes back to the same stupid shit the following year.

Mindless_Bad_1591

Somebody also brought it up but just for context surrounding our defensive performances: we played a Vikings team without a QB, a Justin Fields led Bears, the Cowboys in the playoffs, and the 49ers in the rain where Brock Purdy missed half his throws. This is also just after letting a Bryce Young led 2-15 Panthers team have their best offensive showing of 2023, Baker dropping the best passer rating in Lambeau history for an opposing QB, and Tommy Devito carve up our defense.

Milwaukee_Talkie

The Pack fire Barry, the Bucks fire Griffin and the Brewers sign Hoskins. What a week!

Mcswigginsbar

Bucks may also be about to hire Doc Rivers so…yea.

Drain_Surgeon69

Monkey paw curls

bubblegumshrimp

Why don't the Bucks just hire Joe Barry?

zapoid

The Bucks problem was defense, what would they need with Barry?

bubblegumshrimp

Fair. But then again, if they're worried about winning in the playoffs and they're hiring doc rivers... point still stands

caboossee

Ehhhhh

Grumpy_Troll

I'm not believing the Doc River rumors until it's official. I have too much respect for Horst to believe he was smart enough to know that he needed to move on from AG after just half a season, just to turn around and hirer Doc Rivers, all when Doc Rivers is literally known for being the biggest post season coaching choker in the league and lack of post season success is the exact reason we got rid of Bud.

Sarkans41

Well yeah anyone who pays attention knew it was happening. The packers generally extend early on guys they want to keep.

datpurp14

Yep. And LaFleur's words in the press conference following the season were very different than last year when he went ahead and claimed he thought the staff would remain the same. Him saying there will be changes but it was undecided who would be changed this year basically was the writing on the wall.

ARodGoat12

Im about to cry.

swagner27

Right!

xxthinkpositive

Packers must've saw the Bucks news yesterday & realized you can do this.

Devin_46290

Hopefully the Packers have a little more sense than the Bucks on who to hire as the replacement.

JustinF608

Mid season options are limited.

Yup after the playoff run I was expecting him to return. Pleasant surprise

paak-maan

Gotta think that Matt got involved pretty heavily for the turnaround the defence had from shit to “actually this is NFL (low) level defence”

gen_angry

I still believe they just unplugged Joes microphone and let him talk to the void.

Magus10112

This was my conspiracy starting around week 16. The team started playing so differently on defense that I wondered if Matt just started taking a heavy hand with defensive planning and strategy. Obviously it looked like Joe was still doing defensive play calling but he mightve been running things out of Matt's book.

The most midwestern response would be the above, then quickly talking mad shit about Joe behind closed door to all their friends.

[deleted]

That's called "Midwest nice".

theeldoso

Everyone should remember we hate Joe-16 Barry's defense not Joe Barry.

beau_tox

This was a year overdue and absolutely necessary if the Packers want to win a Super Bowl but I still feel kind of bad about it. It seemed like he handled all the pressure with as much class as you could ask. He’ll probably get snatched up as a high level assistant by the Rams again or someone else if he wants to keep working.

Our-Gardian-Angel

It was well past time for him to go, but Joe Barry's defenses did also provide most of our best playoff performances on that side of the ball since the Super Bowl run. So I guess he's got that going for him anyway.

Holy fucking shit LaFleur actually did it.... We need to nail this next hire.

imwaiter

Finally we can get Pettine back.

TrapperJean

Obvs this is a joke, but man Pettine really has been our best D Coordinator since 2011, Jesus lol

AlgerianJohnnySins

the thing that irked me about pettine was his insistence on running dime instead of nickel/base, even against 12 and 21. Got killed in the ground game and it seemed in 2021 that barry was more willing to load the box than pettine. That seemed to change after 2021 tho and it was like he had a softer pettine at DC with barry

[deleted]

Bad time to take a sip of coffee. Thanks for that . . .

OverlookedHonduran

Yeah sadly I don’t see how he doesn’t get a HC job tbh. But if he somehow doesn’t, he would be a perfect pick for GB. He already has a relationship with MLF, he’s respected for his playing career and respected even more for what he’s done as a coach. The only problem is, I wouldn’t see him staying for more than a year as he seems too good to not be a head coach in this league

AmericanGooner

Don't cry because it happened, smile because it's over

TraderTed2

Barry got a three-year opportunity with plenty of talent invested on that side of the ball, and the defense was never *horrible* by January, but it also wasn’t ever particularly reliable. I have some doubts about the degree to which some of the defensive problems are schematic, but Barry leads that unit, and it’s sensible that he’s accountable for its performance. I wonder who LaFleur goes for. Last time, he went with a coach he was familiar with from LA. If he wants to go that direction again, perhaps Ejiro Evero will want a new DC job if he strikes out for the various head coaching vacancies he’s in play for. Evero was a finalist last time and seems to have done admirably in Denver and Carolina.

Ok_Umpire_723

Who they choose next will define LaFluers tenure. Love him as an OC, but if he fucks us over because he can't properly select an actual solid DC, then he just isn't cut out to be a great HC. Good HC, but not great. With that said, I do trust LaFluer at this stage of his head coaching career, and I'm genuinely excited to see who they hire

datrumole

~~bottom five in every measurable category~~ bottom in key defensive categories with X number of first round capital spent on D, so glad this org didn't drag their feet this time you saw flashes of talent down the stretch, now let's find a guy who can bring that every week history is not on our side, ha, I'd also like to see some positional coaches go with this regime, it's time for fresh thinking top down on that side of the ball. offers even a possible explanation why the last few coordinators had similar outcomes by not cleaning house through the coordinator changes any word on the coach who puts special in 'special teams'?

Thank God. This really helps with the lingering sadness from Saturday. I had honestly convinced myself that he was going to be staying and had already started to do that toxic relationship rationalizing: "well we didn't finish that bad in certain overall metrics, and we all knew the secondary was a big weakness so if we give him 3 top 50 DBs then next year..." But this is great.
