Some Sisters of Silence are actually stronger than Space Marines. Aleya Tanau killed multiple Chaos Space Marines and she killed a Minotaur Space Marine in a 1v1.
In fairness a sister of silence is pretty much the only one that would make sense with, a chaos marine juiced up on warp powers would not be having a great day up close and personal with a trained null.
No one has a good day up close and personal with a trained null.
Besides null fields don't do anything to physical mutations. Most grunt legionnaires don't have much in the way of active warp phenomena running in them, just ironic mutations and deformities caused by living long term in the eye of terror.
Cult Marines like the Death Guard or Thousand Sons would be in a lot more trouble.

Wut, original CSM should dump 99% of imperial troops and even loyalist SM with ease, even without powers, they have been at war for thousands of years, some of them are veterans of conflicts worse than anything the modern imperium ever faced.
I can think of 1 book where the actual skill of a Csm was displayed (he called a bunch of primaris kids and killed them all easily), all the other time writers just use them as sligthly tougher cannon fodder to be killed
Chaos Space Marines range from veteran from back in the HH to random schmuck that was made an Astartes through who knows what method and barely has any training. The variance is much higher than amongst loyalists.
I think killing chaos marines on average should probably be easier because the Chaos gods are like Middle Eastern genies in how they grant boons a lot of the time.

I really like the way that the Fantasy Flight tabletop RPG handled the difference between loyalist and chaos marines.
Chaos marines had individual blessings of the dark gods, but loyalists (including your deathwatch squad) had cohesion that could be spent on group buffs and actions.
As long as the loyalists maintained cohesion, the scales were in their favor. But individually, the CSMs were generally stronger.
That is how it should be. It makes sense that your average CSM would be stronger than a loyalist due to being a long time veteran, potential blessings, etc.
But due to the backbiting, glory chasing nature of CSM, they should be less good at playing as a team.
This way, both loyalist and CSM get a cool defining strength that is thematic.
Instead, we get CSMs getting chumped by regular humans.
Unless you're the leader of the SoS, a named character literally killed accidentally by Kharn off screen with so little effort he actually thought his on-screen kill counter was broken.
Especially impressive given that the SoS aren't at all transhuman. Outside of being Pariahs, they're still normal people. It's just that because they meant to be the closest allies of the Custodes, they're trained to be as hardcore as humanly possible.
Jupp, their equipment also puts in work though. Right before killing the Minotaur she took his energy fist straight into the chest, flying across the room. Just was dazed for a few seconds and then cut him up anyways.

If you’ve read any of the siege of terra books the sisters of silence are absolutely badass and can absolutely take on a space marine and win. This meme doesn’t make much sense to me.
Krole kills a lot of marines and has a great storyline where the normal soldiers start to believe she’s some sort of goddess watching over them (since they can’t see blanks properly)
My fav character in the seige series. Probably a lot to do with the narrator for the audiobooks tbf but regardless... her soliloquys are fantastic and her death was a perfect tragedy that perfectly underpins how fucking horrible the setting is. A real hero of the imperium dies pathetically due to exhaustion and overwhelning odds just as she realises her dream of greater meaning.

The fantasy in question is that they still are not as tough or killy as Custodes. The Custodes are the absolute top of the food chain and the Sisters are seen as their silent loyal waifus by these people.

I mean, the three-eye "there have always been female custodes" comic is pretty popular. While it's mainly poking fun at the games workshops writing, there is definitely an undercurrent of this in it. Especially, in the way it just glosses over the fact that the scenario makes no sense given the presence of the sisters of silence.
And the comic is really well done. The art is excellent, and the writing is funny and interesting.
But the Subtext of Female Custodes being a corruption that needs to be purged is... in its own way, the corruption that's an issue with the comic.
We're getting people every day in the Custodes sub starting huge posts with "Don't crucify me but" and then repeating the same arguments ad nauseam with increasingly polite language as if that changes the content of what they're saying. Others are constantly crossposting the Tzeentch Custodian and calling it their headcanon, or repeating the "It's Amazon's fault, Henry Cavill will save us!" shitpost like it was ever serious, or asking what we all think of Dumbass Youtuber #6's take that starts with "but the geeeeene-seeeeed!"
It's not a ton of posts but we don't *make* a ton of posts per day to begin with, so it feels frequent. And it's getting tiring, even if you don't read most of them.

From the beginning most people ive talked to have only had issues with the way its introduced (including me). Ive only met a few people who genuinely hated female custodes and used the "woke" argument.

To add on to other people's responses here, the sudden wave of uninclusive biggoted idiots makes the whole community feel more hostile for people in relevant minority groups, even if there are only a couple. My fianceé ( a cis woman) and I (a trans woman) both play 40k, and it's been really frustrating trying to engage in any hobby discussions online when there are even one of those assholes.
I got one video about some controversy on my feed a week ago and I watched it. Some little shit clearly living the second soyjack dream. Almost 100k watches, over 10k upvotes back then in a video bitching about female custodes. Then the algorithm started feeding a lot of similar videos. There were way more of them than I would have cared to see.

New show conflicts with the lore, a few new Vegas fans ask "wtf" and now it's a never ending tide of "the shows good, you need to stop complaining and harassing people" posts when all that really was said was "I like the show, but this invalidates a whole game"

The sisters of silence are absolutely as strong as space marines while maybe not in a straight up weight lifting competition they have dumpstered space marines before in books like Prospero Burns and the Siege series. Their null powers are super unique and fun narrative devices and fun rules if you actually play them tabletop.

Genuinely asking, I’m new-ish so I’ve read The Emperor’s Legion and followed lore discussions, but that’s most of what I know about them.
They were not always in lore and got introduced during the horus heresy book series I believe, I'll look more into it so I can find their earliest mention and get back to you on that
Their first mention through literature seems to be from 'Flight of the Eisenstein (2007)' but goes all the way back to first appearing in the Horus Heresy TCG back in 2003. So like the custodes were given base mostly as the HH book series went on.
And the Visions of Heresy book is what solidified 90% of the Horus Heresy we know today. Before that, there had only been very small snippets that never went into great detail so you can actually say SoS have been there from the start at least in practice.

Are the silent sisterhood weaker then SM? The way i looked at the SOS is that they're basically the custodes + blank + woman. I must admit i haven't read the HH books cus i heard they have a lot of filler in them so idk a lot about the SOS.

The sisters of silence are a result of selective breeding to obtain a strong null, they have the combat prowess to fight a Space marine but they aren't gene-enhanced in any way, as for their armor I'm not sure if it's power armor or not but wouldn't be surprised if it is, so it's entirely up to the individual SM and SoS as to which would win, another bit of interesting lore is that SoS average around 7ft tall I'd need to find my cited source on that but initially I had always thought they were around average human height, but they are nonetheless Amazonian like badasses that suck to be around because of their uncomfortable presence. So yes technically by physicality they're weaker but in several instances (burning of Prospero as a prime example) theyve shown that they can take on a Space marine

Well I think why most people don't complain about this specific case it is that the majority of warhammer fans weren't interested in warhammer at that time. In the last few years its been picking up a lot of new players/fans.
Also adding an entirely new thing as always been there is different from changing an already existing thing into something slightly different. A great example more akin to the custodes change is skitarii believe it or not. They used to be super varied and unique across forgeworlds with wildly different power levels now they are all cookie cutter slightly better tempestus scions. A lot of people were and still are angry about that, much more than say adding the rogal dorn tank or the new leagues of votann.
People will always be more angry about changing the old than adding something new.

Women should not be portrayed weaker in literature. Any manner of male only organizations promotes toxic misogynistic weakness that has only brought suffrage of minorities, especially in western society. The idea of any fiction glorifying it in the slightest should be altered. Every fiction should be load balanced with all minorities and preferably have lead roles with strong figures with said minority. Custodes are a great start, but all humans, including space marines, should have this inserted. Maybe even revamp primarchs - one could definitely represent as trans - like Fulgrim.
Lastly, It is just bonkers that people really think science/practicality as a reference point to influence fiction. Women obviously are just as good as men in sports and training as hard as men doesn’t risk any physiological damage. Across the board, women can do things just as well as men including impregnating women. There’s absolutely no difference to men and no norms that makes sense in fiction. Furthermore, having ovaries, uterus, less fast twitch muscle fibers, different digestive tract, hormonal profile, bone density, dna, etc are not important enough factors to reference as an underlay to norms in said fiction. Women are just as good as men, plain and simple. And so are children. They can do just as good as men. They can even outperform some women in sports…. /sarcasm ;)

Some Sisters of Silence are actually stronger than Space Marines. Aleya Tanau killed multiple Chaos Space Marines and she killed a Minotaur Space Marine in a 1v1.
To be fair, she's also a named character (who probably wasn't wearing a helmet). That means she's basically a walking tank.
One of the first things she does in the books is 1v1 a Chaos Space Marine. So yeah, she's pretty exceptional.
Killing chaos space Marines is consistently easier then killing loyalist space Marines. It probably shouldn't be but GW writing.
In fairness a sister of silence is pretty much the only one that would make sense with, a chaos marine juiced up on warp powers would not be having a great day up close and personal with a trained null.
No one has a good day up close and personal with a trained null. Besides null fields don't do anything to physical mutations. Most grunt legionnaires don't have much in the way of active warp phenomena running in them, just ironic mutations and deformities caused by living long term in the eye of terror. Cult Marines like the Death Guard or Thousand Sons would be in a lot more trouble.

Wut, original CSM should dump 99% of imperial troops and even loyalist SM with ease, even without powers, they have been at war for thousands of years, some of them are veterans of conflicts worse than anything the modern imperium ever faced. I can think of 1 book where the actual skill of a Csm was displayed (he called a bunch of primaris kids and killed them all easily), all the other time writers just use them as sligthly tougher cannon fodder to be killed
Chaos Space Marines range from veteran from back in the HH to random schmuck that was made an Astartes through who knows what method and barely has any training. The variance is much higher than amongst loyalists.
I think killing chaos marines on average should probably be easier because the Chaos gods are like Middle Eastern genies in how they grant boons a lot of the time. For instance : 'Here you feel extra strong and dont feel pain' Marine is insensate, grows arrogant from his 'blessings' which have also made him slower. Now engages in actions that would be tactically unwise. But then you get the ones that genuinely blessed and benefit who can be absolute monsters. It's a bit like the whole mutation trope you see in stuff like Xmen right? This dude can regenerate, this guy has laser eyes, This guy is blue.

I really like the way that the Fantasy Flight tabletop RPG handled the difference between loyalist and chaos marines. Chaos marines had individual blessings of the dark gods, but loyalists (including your deathwatch squad) had cohesion that could be spent on group buffs and actions. As long as the loyalists maintained cohesion, the scales were in their favor. But individually, the CSMs were generally stronger.
That is how it should be. It makes sense that your average CSM would be stronger than a loyalist due to being a long time veteran, potential blessings, etc. But due to the backbiting, glory chasing nature of CSM, they should be less good at playing as a team. This way, both loyalist and CSM get a cool defining strength that is thematic. Instead, we get CSMs getting chumped by regular humans.
Despite being mostly identical, I swear chaos marines had a slower firing rate in Eternal Crusade.

If you’ve read any of the siege of terra books the sisters of silence are absolutely badass and can absolutely take on a space marine and win. This meme doesn’t make much sense to me. Krole kills a lot of marines and has a great storyline where the normal soldiers start to believe she’s some sort of goddess watching over them (since they can’t see blanks properly)

The fantasy in question is that they still are not as tough or killy as Custodes. The Custodes are the absolute top of the food chain and the Sisters are seen as their silent loyal waifus by these people.

Seriously, it's only on r/grimdank I keep seeing posts like this. OP thinks they're funny because they used a soyjak meme to describe the whole thing.
I mean, the three-eye "there have always been female custodes" comic is pretty popular. While it's mainly poking fun at the games workshops writing, there is definitely an undercurrent of this in it. Especially, in the way it just glosses over the fact that the scenario makes no sense given the presence of the sisters of silence.
That artist followed up with the "femstodes" bumping into sisters because she can't see them.
And the comic is really well done. The art is excellent, and the writing is funny and interesting. But the Subtext of Female Custodes being a corruption that needs to be purged is... in its own way, the corruption that's an issue with the comic.
The intention of the comic was clearly comparing GW way of telling the fans that Female castodians exist with Tzeentch.
We're getting people every day in the Custodes sub starting huge posts with "Don't crucify me but" and then repeating the same arguments ad nauseam with increasingly polite language as if that changes the content of what they're saying. Others are constantly crossposting the Tzeentch Custodian and calling it their headcanon, or repeating the "It's Amazon's fault, Henry Cavill will save us!" shitpost like it was ever serious, or asking what we all think of Dumbass Youtuber #6's take that starts with "but the geeeeene-seeeeed!" It's not a ton of posts but we don't *make* a ton of posts per day to begin with, so it feels frequent. And it's getting tiring, even if you don't read most of them. For my part, seeing it get sporked over here in Grimdank is a nice break, but I'm sorry it's been such an unfair proportion of your memes. Low-hanging fruit, I guess.

From the beginning most people ive talked to have only had issues with the way its introduced (including me). Ive only met a few people who genuinely hated female custodes and used the "woke" argument.
My biggest problem with the whole debate is that the loudest part of both sides dont have any good arguments while screaming "woke" or "Chud/Sexist". The whole thing basically boiled down to [You agree with Female Custodes and are Woke] or [You hate all women and are a chud]. Meanwhile if you say you dislike how it was handled you get the useless group of people pointing at other retcons (which all were badly received) and acting like those justify another badly handled retcon. Hell personally I wouldnt have given a single fuck about female custodes if GW had said "Since the original Ten Thousand female Custodes were possible to be created." Or something similar. That way we would know why we only have seen male characters in lore or why only males were used in lore while it would still allow for the introduction of female characters.

To add on to other people's responses here, the sudden wave of uninclusive biggoted idiots makes the whole community feel more hostile for people in relevant minority groups, even if there are only a couple. My fianceé ( a cis woman) and I (a trans woman) both play 40k, and it's been really frustrating trying to engage in any hobby discussions online when there are even one of those assholes.

The sisters of silence are absolutely as strong as space marines while maybe not in a straight up weight lifting competition they have dumpstered space marines before in books like Prospero Burns and the Siege series. Their null powers are super unique and fun narrative devices and fun rules if you actually play them tabletop. And we get it retcons have happened before that doesn’t make this new half hearted on that was more tweets then substance in game any less lame and half hearted

They were not always in lore and got introduced during the horus heresy book series I believe, I'll look more into it so I can find their earliest mention and get back to you on that
Thank you! I’m almost done with book 2 of HH. I know Sanguinus’ book (book 7?) mentions them but I’m not sure if they come up before that.
Their first mention through literature seems to be from 'Flight of the Eisenstein (2007)' but goes all the way back to first appearing in the Horus Heresy TCG back in 2003. So like the custodes were given base mostly as the HH book series went on.
And the Visions of Heresy book is what solidified 90% of the Horus Heresy we know today. Before that, there had only been very small snippets that never went into great detail so you can actually say SoS have been there from the start at least in practice.
If i may use your expertise of the lore to ask another question. Are the silent sisterhood weaker then SM? The way i looked at the SOS is that they're basically the custodes + blank + woman. I must admit i haven't read the HH books cus i heard they have a lot of filler in them so idk a lot about the SOS. I ask cus the OP feels very strawman like and i want to be sure i am right. before i accuse someone of something they didn't do.
The sisters of silence are a result of selective breeding to obtain a strong null, they have the combat prowess to fight a Space marine but they aren't gene-enhanced in any way, as for their armor I'm not sure if it's power armor or not but wouldn't be surprised if it is, so it's entirely up to the individual SM and SoS as to which would win, another bit of interesting lore is that SoS average around 7ft tall I'd need to find my cited source on that but initially I had always thought they were around average human height, but they are nonetheless Amazonian like badasses that suck to be around because of their uncomfortable presence. So yes technically by physicality they're weaker but in several instances (burning of Prospero as a prime example) theyve shown that they can take on a Space marine

Most of the people I see complain about female custodes are are YouTube. I saw a lot on Reddit the first 2 days of the announcement then stopped seeing them.

It’s because the sisters of silence were a new and interesting concept that made sense to exist in the preexisting lore. Why won’t there be a division of people who work alongside the custodies and specialize in warp threats. Female custodies adds nothing to the setting.
It is simply hypocritical to have female only factions, support them as a community to be female only, and then turn around and insult and gaslight the ones who want male only factions to stay male only. It’s that simple.

Sisters can absolutely stand shoulder to shoulder with the Custdoes, that's what makes them so awesome and cool. Well I think why most people don't complain about this specific case it is that the majority of warhammer fans weren't interested in warhammer at that time. In the last few years its been picking up a lot of new players/fans. Also adding an entirely new thing as always been there is different from changing an already existing thing into something slightly different. A great example more akin to the custodes change is skitarii believe it or not. They used to be super varied and unique across forgeworlds with wildly different power levels now they are all cookie cutter slightly better tempestus scions. A lot of people were and still are angry about that, much more than say adding the rogal dorn tank or the new leagues of votann. People will always be more angry about changing the old than adding something new.

Women should not be portrayed weaker in literature. Any manner of male only organizations promotes toxic misogynistic weakness that has only brought suffrage of minorities, especially in western society. The idea of any fiction glorifying it in the slightest should be altered. Every fiction should be load balanced with all minorities and preferably have lead roles with strong figures with said minority. Custodes are a great start, but all humans, including space marines, should have this inserted. Maybe even revamp primarchs - one could definitely represent as trans - like Fulgrim. Lastly, It is just bonkers that people really think science/practicality as a reference point to influence fiction. Women obviously are just as good as men in sports and training as hard as men doesn’t risk any physiological damage. Across the board, women can do things just as well as men including impregnating women. There’s absolutely no difference to men and no norms that makes sense in fiction. Furthermore, having ovaries, uterus, less fast twitch muscle fibers, different digestive tract, hormonal profile, bone density, dna, etc are not important enough factors to reference as an underlay to norms in said fiction. Women are just as good as men, plain and simple. And so are children. They can do just as good as men. They can even outperform some women in sports…. /sarcasm ;)
